I suppose live action is the best reference, where you can work out timing and performance as you would for stop motion. However, the movement is so intentionally stylized that it seems fine to shoot without reference and just make sure poses are held long enough to read. I think it's best to shoot twelve frames per second.
I plan out the shot enough to work out the camera angle, like how wide it needs to be to capture all the action. But I also like to improvise a little, adding little actions as I go.
