The new Penn fathom 2 with cast control knob, has a design flaw. The cast control knob is in the wrong position. It gets in the way while retrieving the line. Penn needs to move the knob either to the top of the reel or further back.
un detalle a tenere en cuenta con el Penn Fathom II 12/15 SD es que no podrá utilizarlo en una caña con portacarrete a cremallera ya que el diseño del reel impide ajustar y cerrar la palanca de la cremallera. a detail to have in mind with the Penn Fathom II 12/15 SD is that you will not be able to use it in a rod with a rack reel because the design of the reel prevents adjusting and closing the lever of the zipper.
Cast control on star drag is so awesome I loved it on the first series, but please penn if you guys want to kill it make a disengaging level wind you’ll change the game
Why doesn't the casting special have the quick release screws like on the ABU Garcia reels... these are the reels that will be in the surf the most for surf casters.
All models of this series [including the CS] have the "3 screw" sideplate takedown for cleaning/servicing, as shown in the video starting at 0:57. The Knobby Mag is adjusted externally, or even "on the fly" during the cast.
Isnt the apool tension supposed to give you spool adjustment. I will be getting the lower gears. a 20n or 15n would be cool. Perfect for those day trips
@@tunanorth i have the 15 and 25n i wish you guys made a fathom 20n. Or something to bridge the gap. Maybe narrower and taller than the 15 but smaller than the 25
Hi Steve thanks for Listening to the Awesome BDE’RS..!!! Btw is there a plan in the future to incorporate the “Easy Access” feature in the Fathom LEVER DRAG Series? TIA
Hi Steve. As you know, the FTH25N and 30 are used primarily as jig stick reels here in So CA. Therefore, my question is: why wasn’t the cast control also added to those models?
The 25N, 30, and 40 size star drags have the "centrifuge brake" cast control. Works well, though not as convenient and easy to adjust as the mag-cast. In SoCal, the mag-cast control is more often viewed as a negative, mostly because it is thought to impede flylining small live baits [though it really does not].
I dont quite understand the $50 just for a knobby adjuster and slightly different spool. What sets this apart from the standard 15 other than cosmetics?
The FTHII15CS has knobby cast control specifically for maximum distance, upgraded bearings, and approximately 15 percent additional line capacity. The standard FTHII15 is still a very good choice for most casting chores; your call if you think you would benefit from the upgrades.
I have 2 in the 30 size. They were nice when they were new but not even 1 year later the spool and anti reverse bearings have went out after just 1 season . My gen 1 fathom 30 is 6 years old and haver had a single problem. Penn making their reels too cheap now .
Once again Penn overlooks their east coast 8nBait surfcasters who can out cast anyone on the west coast. The Fathom 12 and 15 are the most popular reels on the beaches here. So Penn changes to a Magnetic system that looks similar to the Squall which is junk. Looks like they are going to discontinue the centrifugal models. The knobby mag is only offered in the 15 when it should be offered in the 12 also and it's not worth an additional fifty bucks either. Who the hell comes up with this stuff? Does anyone there do any market research ?
Of course when I do a video presentation for the west coast BD'ers, I am going to emphasize the west coast. Regarding the east coast surf market, there was in fact substantially more market research done for that side of the country, and the change from Centrifuge to Mag Dial was in response to overwhelming demand from that 8-n-bait angling segment. It would indeed have been nice to have a Knobby Mag version in both the 12 and 15 sizes, but adding an additional SKU for such a specialized model is hard on the retailers with a lineup that already includes such a wide swath of versions.
Bull Crap! But anyway I have a Casting Special and like it a lot. But then again I also still have a 525 Knobby Mag. On the 15 Casting Special the knob should be at 2 o'clock and not it's present position at 7 o'clock. I still love and fish my centrifugal 12s
Thank you Steve Carson aka tunanorth !
Love the new reels. Penn has done a good job with these reels. Can't wait to get my hands on a couple thanks for the review my friend
Awesome Steve....Lovin those reels. Dying to get a couple !!!
Thanks, Gerry from San Diego, CA
Hi, I'm a big fan. I would really love a narrow version of Penn Fathom ll LW 30

The only problem, is made in china
the casting specials have narrow bolts on the bottom for long casting 12-13 foot rods. and that is a no go.
With the fathom 30 star drag power model when is the reel ideal over the 6.1:1 gear ration model

Wow casting model had a lefthand also available in amazon
Has to be some kind of listing error on Amazon's part. The only "leftys" are in the "levelwind" versions.
Sad news if error and not available the left hand
I wanna try out that 15 with a knobby mag
Oooh I bet that would be nice !
Cast control on star drag is so awesome I loved it on the first series, but please penn if you guys want to kill it make a disengaging level wind you’ll change the game
Game changer
Thats why Okuma KOMODO is ahead in this feauture!
john smith the Komodo doesn’t have a disengaging levelwind it still moves when you cast
Level wind sucks...grow up and lay the line by hand

Penn Fathoms.....the Game Changer on Value Reel Class!
Totally agree

Right side adjustment just gives spool alignment/tolerance, but it is not a cast control.
