Britney Spears as #2 or #3 makes SO MUCH more sense than Billboard's actual ranking of #6. Thank you for putting respect on her name as THE Pop Star of our generation.
Olivia's first album is the most streamed female album in history, has set multiple records for sales, streaming and radio. She exploded onto the scene in a more successful way than Ariana. Both are great but you can't deny Olivia's success.
I'm equally ambivalent towards men in pop music lol, but for my top 10, I would probably swap out Billie and Olivia for Justin Bieber if we want to talk about not only songs, but the sheer chokehold he had on the music industry between 2009 and maybe 2016-2017 is unmatched. Even the yummyfication of Bieber produced hits.
y’all don’t talk about consistency though 😭 taylor went from country to having a country pop album to full pop and experimenting with alternative music. the connection with fans, playing a stadium with her second album, winning aoty with her second album. pulling out her music from spotify to fight for artist rights and re recording her albums. the reputation comeback and branding it with snakes. the drama of it all. i love gaga but if you’re thinking about it, gaga made so much impact especially with her first albums. billboard takes consider the consistency of fame and music release as well. taylor has 11 albums and it’s hard and rare for an artist to keep that relevancy and she did, like, that’s superstar shit right there 😭
i’ll give you fashion impact, certainly, but there’s no way you can listen to Picture to Burn, I Knew You Were Trouble, Exile, Midnight Rain, and The Black Dog and claim Taylor doesn’t have the versatility. There’s no way you can see The Eras Tour (even from outside the stadiums) and claim she doesn’t have the star quality, and there’s no way you can remember Snake Gate (#TaylorSwiftIsOverParty) and claim she doesn’t have the pop culture hold, let’s be real here. Love her or hate her, Taylor has always made an impact on the people.
I definitely see how people love taylor, but Beyonce IS number one to me. There has never been a shift in my lifetime in pop like that Self-Titled drop. She changed the DAY OF THE WEEK music was released. And she has never given me relatable, but she isn't trying to. She's the popstar, because no popstar in the past 20 years has refused to give her her flowers
I feel like Dua Lipa should have been on here on the low end or an honorable mention. She literally revitalized pop in 2019 and has dominated ever since.
She only was icon status during future nostalgia, and 1 era isn't enough. Plus future nostalgia was filled with samples from start to finish. Not very original. She's definitely modeled after Katy Perry by her management. Speaking of Katy Perry, she should have been on the list.

Well 21st century Mariah was way out of her zone in music quality, vocal quality and relevance. She even barely cracked Palmer's top 10 due to bias as she's his favorite singer of all time.

Taylor Swift - others are right, she didn't have a pop culture hold (until recently), instead she had a *US culture* hold, she is well respected *and well known* in more genres and more sub-cultures of the US than Lady Gaga.
