  • Today we take a look at a few Catasetum orchids that are not doing that well. The others which are fine are boring and not worth filming :D

I really liked the first 25 seconds. The made me giggle :D
About the excessive fertilizer thing: i read that some tiny pieces of charcoal (about 1 cm in diameter) mixed with the medium will suck up the left over fertilizer and keep the ph on the right level. Kinda like the peat thingies you used

This happened with my Lycaste Yi-Ying Sakura also, totally healthy bulbs started to get yellow and mushy, I thought it is a virus but no. I lost two big bulbs. I think it was because of the dryness, since I give more water to the plant everything is okay. At the beginning the last mature bulb had also started to be yellow, but after I gave water it turns into green. Since that issue I keep it always moist, but next year I will use sphagnum moss.

Hi Dani! Thanks for the video.
I had the same symptoms (old squishy rotten pseudobulbs, and therefore keikies emerging wherever they can).
My plans were diagnosed with Fusarium....yes....that awful fungus strukes again, and the symptoms with Catasetum plants look differet.
I would suggest a treatment of a systemic fungicide that is available where you live, and is effective against Fusarium- I did a rotation of Thiophanate-Methyl, Prochloraz and Azoxystrobin. The plants reacted very well to the treatment.
The keikies and the dead pseudobulbs are strategies of the plant to try and escape the fungus... please update if you choose to treat them. Thanks :)

from what i heard from a friend of mine that grows catasetinae, if the plant is a cycnoches or has cycnoches in the parentage, it kills its old pseudobulb to make way for the new growth.

Oh my gods! Wine delight! No! Lol
Great video. Catasetums seem to grow indoors easily in my climate so this video is very relevant to me. I was just wondering about catasetum roots and I thought I recalled some people cut off the old roots. I have a Monnierara millennium magic witchcraft that is just about to bloom and I'm already planning aftercare. Lol
    Thank you!

I read somewhere that catasetums with 4 pseudobulbs should be divided to stop the old bulbs dying off. I would not know if this is true for sure as I have only grown catasetums for a year. Have to say they're a very interesting orchid! Mine likes semi hydro (wine delight).

I love your channel, I've learned so much! Thank you, Dany!!! :)
I addition, I wanted to ask you if you could make a video, where you would introduce the main species or categories of orchids, how to recognize them and a simple guide to their care. I was in a store in Slovakia where they had a lot of different orchids, but all without tags (yeah, it is a problem :D) and I bought the Nelly Isler unknowingly

Any comments about 'over fertilisation'? Does this mean that the manufacturer's recommended dosage/amount is too much? Or a case of not putting in the recommended amount?

Hi Dani, my Fredclarkeara After Dark SVO Black Pearl is coming out of dormancy. I’m looking forward to it’s repot. This time what would you change in your approach with your catasetums compared to what you had done last year? I will be growing in sphagnum moss. What do you think?

My catasetum is completely no root, what can I do? I don’t have new growth, my catasetum still have 2 leaves left at the time. I think it’s going to have no leave and no root, please keep some suggestion, thank you Danni.

Hi, thank you for making the vids. I often watch your stuff, they are very helpful and thus far you seem to be the only one with knowledge on my subject. I inherited a catasetum seedling and its probably because its owner could not care for it, its suffering from a bad case of root rot. Its media its old peat moss and it looks old. Im not sure if it can be helped but I would like to have your opinion. Do you have a public address I can send some imgs to?

Hi Dani, Another great video. Question: I don't have Catasetums in my collection but been thinking about starting with one. I also want to experiment with semi-hydro. Are Catasetums the best choice to start with semi-dydro and if so, which kind do you recommend I start with.

I noticed you didn't add any slow release this time. Are you giving that up completely? Outside of being a little over generous the first time around, it did seem to be highly effective.

Question, why is my catasetum (Cycnodes Wine Delight) new growth, making a new growth? It never finished the first one and started doing that.

I purchased a catesetum in winter. My first. Its not losing its leaves and has no new growth, just an eye. What should I be doing? So confused! Thank you!

Stef Styl A flasked seedling will take 4-5 yrs

From deflasking to blooming usually is about 2-3 years, these orchids reach maturity quite a bit faster than other orchid genera.

Catesetums, in my opinion, should be left in the pot they are in when they go into dormancy.
