  • At Superbooth 2024 we met up with David Gibbons from Oberheim who introduced us to the new TEO-5 synthesizer. Named after Tom Oberheim with an exclusive reveal of Tom's middle name, the TEO-5 has a SEM filter, two oscillators and a sub giving that classic Oberheim sound, but with lots of features to bring its capabilities right up to date.
Chris Calcutt then stepped up, and gave us a demo of the sound of this synth. TEO-5 gives us 19 mod slots with tons of destinations, both a mono and a poly LFO, two envelopes and a capable twin FX section. Uniquely there is a cross-mod section with thru-zero capabilities, which allows FM modulation that stays in tune up and down the keyboard.
With a similar form factor to the Take 5, the TEO-5 has a 3 and a half octave Fatar keyboard with aftertouch, and is designed to give the Oberheim sound in a more portable and affordable package
    TEO-5 Available: July 2024. Price: 1,499 USD

    Ooooooh!
The mod matrix gives it the special quality of the Matrix 6R and Xpander modules. Really a feast to use that. And you've got the F.M., well sort of, and original Oberheim quality as well. An interesting synth, although pretty outside my budget these days i fear. And at this moment there are so many interesting synths out there.
But this one will be on my wish-in-case-of-better-financial-times list for sure, and the Matrix 6R would have to go for that (having two DCO's that are phase locked).

    Yes, the TEO-5 sounds great.
No, the TEO-5 got a display. A display that displays minimal information about parameters seems to be useless for me. In the Focusrite Group there are Summit and Peak from Novation. And both synthesisers offer excellent sounds AND an excellent UI. Every single parameter change (slider or knob) is displayed as "new" and "previous" value (and then switches back to the former display content).
That´s what I expect from an "intelligent" UI. Even an "old" Access Virus Darkstar (TI2) offers this kind of display.
So I really don´t understand why more modern synthesisers ignore such a useful feature. Maybe a big firmware update might resolve this issue.

Interesting, I may be wrong about that, I don't think "modern synthesisers ignore" that, all my dsi synths (and many others do that), it's kind of basic (there is a little dot on the take5 that shows when you "picked up" the value)
I can see why some people actually prefer that, maybe it's a design decision but it would be better to have the option to turn it on, maybe it's just something that will be fixed in future OS updates.

@@ThePCxbox Hi, the Teo 5 uses the same oscillator chips as the Take 5 - the SSI 2130 (another reason why it's capable of doing Through-Zero FM, even though that ability wasn't utilised on the Take 5). The OB6 has discrete circuit oscillators designed exclusively for the OB6. The ONLY similarity between the P6 and the OB6's oscillators, is that one element of the oscillator was a "lift" from the Prophet 6's discrete oscillator, which was merely just for the sine wave, so nothing in common other than that.

      Agree with you there.
Very likely nothing will sound like the classic OB 4 SEM or OB 8 SEM voice synths, as they were fully analog and each module is slightly different from the others. Since Tom did an article about that some years ago, i really would have liked to hear that in this demo, or at least a comparison to the recent OBX8.
They really did not convince me that the sound is anywhere near that of the classic Oberheims.
On the other hand i think this was a decent introductory video, covering all the other things this synth can do. In about 15 minutes without disturbing background noise, which is rare for a typical Namm, Superbooth or Anaheim convention.
