I just picked up a step through last week. When test riding it became clear that the bulkiness and weight could be an issue compared to my regular bike, so I opted for it. These bikes are heavy and are beasts! I'm glad I picked as I did.

I want to thank you for your videos on the Aventon ebikes. I was torn between the Level 2 step over and the Aventure 2 step through. Based on this particular video combined with the various comments that accompany it, I decided to go with the Step through Aventure in Cobalt Blue. We have a Rad Power step through that I bought for my wife a couple of years ago (and enjoy riding) and I tried swinging my leg over it and could see that being an issue in the coming years. I will be 66 in a couple of months and I just think that he step through is the best way to go. Thanks again for your great series of videos.

Mike great insight on how to saddled up on the step over. I am 69 yo 5-11 205 w good hx of bike riding, however did notice a greater difficulty in getting into my saddle . I love the throttle take off. Looking toward more video on the adventure. Go Chiefs

I wanted the bike right away and the only option for the Aventure the shop had was step through. I'm happy with it and it made no difference to me if it was a "girls" bike.
I just got mine yesterday and already have 31 miles on it. While riding this evening, a father and son were out and I heard him tell his son "That's a man's bike there." It certainly is impressive and you don't even think in old terms with these bikes.
It's no longer considered girls or guys bikes, it's all about personal preference and what you like the look of..... Ride safe. :)
Nice and very informative video. One advantage of step-over is using your legs to hold the bike upright during stop.

Good Review. I just got the step through in the same color. how are these holding up? Are the batteries still performing good? What kind of mileage are you getting out of the batteries? I too am an upstate NY. The guy at Bert's bikes definitely was no help. I bought mine someplace else.
Yeah I bought mine direct online. Battery has been holding up great. I did pull it out and keep it inside for the real cold months. Hope you had a chance to subscribe.:)

Sorry for the late response, thought I replied. I can confidently say with ease. Realistically I know it's not.... but I feel it's irrelevant on the Aventure. With that said I'm not shooting straight up giant hills on a dirt trail. Do you have an ebike?

If you have a rack with a basket, the step through is the best choice. E bikes are taking on many different shapes. The choice is not male/female, but rather what fits your needs and how it looks to you.
Very true, especially if you need the step threw. I have a bad knee that's why I haven't put a bag on the back rack yet.
I do drone photography & videography so getting off & on is important to me.
No doubt the step through is the way to go especially when you have a bag on the back and you have to throw your leg over it. :)

My Aventure Step Thru should be here on Thursday. I’m keeping my fingers crossed I don’t have any troubles. I’m also from upstate NY so doesn’t look like much dealer support around here. I’m a fireman so of course I had to go with the red.
That's great news. We have bike shops Bert's bikes who sell Aventon bikes. I don't believe they have the Adventure but you have others made by Adventon.

I just got the Aventon Level.2 and I love it and have seen your videos on them and learned a lot. I’m 45 years old from Texas and been riding for almost 5 months and I have 2 bikes now, my first one is a Totem Victor 2.0, great bike also for my first Electric Bike. At 72 I chose the step-thru and I’m glad I did, it makes it so much easier to get on and off!

Excellent review!! The step over can be tough to get on when the rear rack is loaded up with anything that extends up above the seat height. Not an issue at all with the step through. I like the look of step over bikes myself, but in practical use the step through is actually better.

Hi Mile! Do your feet hit the ground when you come to a stop while you are still on the seat? Or do you slip forward over the bar when you come to a stop?
I lean to the side and put one foot down or I come off of the seat and stand over the bar when I come to a stop.

How'd you get away with not buying a front and back rack for your wife's bike?
I tried getting her both but she didn't want them. She may end up with one anyways if there's a bunch of stuff to carry.:) Also piling stuff up on a back rack as much easier with the step through.
Just think the sales of these bikes in whole,if prices were lowered,
a kid would save up 5-6 hundred dollars and get it,when it’s thousands,it’s a limited market.
some busineses offer financing......bikes from 2-10.000$..........wow!
They are expensive, I believe they do offer 3 party financing.
I just bought my 5th ebike and got the Step Through Aventure. Frame feels
strong on trails and it’s much easier all around. If you have a rear rack and bag the step over is a real pain. Cheers!
So true, for me I have a hard time lifting my leg that high so definitely would like the large step through because I like my accessories.

hey man, i really appreciate this video! I've been doing so much research on this new Aventon Level 2 these past few days, but since it's so new there's hardly any in depth reviews yet. so, i started looking into bikes similar to it like the Aventure to get an idea of what it would be like, mainly the sizing. I'm so glad you said how tall you were and showed you getting on the bike because I've deciding between the Regular or Large size. I too like when the bike feels a little bigger than me so i might go with the large step over model too!
I'm posting a video on the level 2 in about a week. If you like the bike to feel bigger on you my opinion would be the Aventure hands down. Just something about the fat tire bikes.

i like that the only visual diffrence between these two is the frame shape. sometimes manifacturer paints Step Through bikes diffrently and it kinda keeps the womans bike and mens bike myth alive.🙂
True, the only difference it the frame. So it definitely keeps with the newer theory.
Are the step through M/L and step over Large the same size? I'm 6'3 230.

Good video Mike ! I got my girlfriend a small step over in camouflage green for her birthday she loves it ! There is another RUclips or called evolutionarily Tom he shows how you could tilt the bike down really far and then it makes it easier to pass your leg over. I’m trying to get on board myself with the step through idea and a good few RUclipsrs have said if anyone thinks it’s a girls bike tell them to get over it. I’ve looked Aventon’s web site, Juiced web site and even Rad’s site and every time you look at the step through bikes on these sites they’re mostly showing chicks riding them so I guess confusing considering they want you to get over the idea that it’s a girls bike !
The culture has definitely changed on them and the perception of step threw as being being girls bikes.
Great review, thanks Mike. Have you unlocked Class 3 speeds up to 28 mph? Can you use power levels 1-4 and get over 20 mph or do you have to use power level 5 to get up to 28 mph?

that step threw is only offered in s/m or m/l (i think) -i could be wrong its happened before- i think i need the large - 6ft 210 lb here - your vids have been helpful - thankyou
Absolutely, I believe according to their website the S/M is for 4'11 to 5' 7" and the M/L is for 5'8" to 6' 2"
There are so many damn videos on STEP THROUGH bikes, but NONE of them tells us WTF it is. 😖

Question...I am looking at getting the exact same 2 bikes. There will be times when I need to ride the small step though. I am 5-10, maybe 5-11, is it real uncomfortable to go for a long ride on b the small step through at our height? I will ride it when my son and I go because he is over 6 feet so I will ride smaller. Will I be comfy?

I've taken my wife's step throughout a few times and it's still very comfortable to me. Maybe you should also consider the option of a large step through if you're five 10 or 11 I believe the size chart for the step through is
S/M 4'11" - 5'7"
M/L 5'8" - 6'2"

Step through only comes in 2 sizes.

Yes, it's about 15" wide and about 11" long. Hope this helps. Also I agree on an accessory video once our crazy weather gets better.
I have the front basket on mine. Keep in mind you can’t put anything very tall in the basket. Interferes with the bars. Love the bike.

Do you feel like the step thru is heavier?
You can double check on their website but I believe they're the same weight. Probably a little easier to maneuver the step through just because of the opening. I made the same comment on your other video. But, I was wondering if you cross shopped the Adventure with the Level? If you did, you obviously liked the Adventure better because that is what you bought. I personally like hitting a dirt trail on occasion. But, my wife doesn't. Maybe because we don't have fat tires on our current 1990's mountain bikes? Any thoughts? Thanks for the comparison video on the step through and step over.
I ride meny bike and have appreciation for meny bikes. But just something about them fat tire bikes. :)
I just ordered my 1st ebike, after being a lifelong cyclist since the late 70s. I've racked up many thousands of miles. But now my spirit is willing but knees are getting weaker. So a Step Through model from Ride 1 Up is on the way. Totally stoked. I'm a guy who prefers what's best for me, not what others may think. So long as my bike isn't pink, I'm good!

I'm looking at getting a 2nd one for wife and friends. Mostly trail riding. I'd like to get a step through so I have both options, but fear the strength of the frame. Trying to find some info about that as compared to the step over.
Being we do trail riding, it's a valid concern. And my wife really struggles with the step over. So much so that after 1 ride in front of the house, she will not get on it again. Never even tried the assist part..
My opinion would be to get the step through. Especially if your wife will never ride with you or someone who can't get on a step over. As far as worrying about the strength of the frame I personally wouldn't even consider that myself personally. With that said I'm not an expert but I ride many step through ebikes and never felt any different in regards to the bike strength. With that said if it was in a trash compactor my guess is the step through would fold in half before the step over.:)

Are they tubeless compatible or can the bafang rear hub motor be upgraded?
The tires have tubes. You'd have to check with The manufacturers to see if you can upgrade the hub motor. :)
@@mikerochester Yeah. I am. Looking at one from tractor supply now that's got a 1000W Motor and optional dual battery but I don't like the fact that it's camo instead of solid green and I don't think that it has directionals.
Great video! I'm 71 and purchased the step over for the same reasons you did. I have second thought now and again but once I'm on I'm good. And, I do like the look of the step over. BTW, I like the drone action especially the outro.
Yeah I get that I really like the look of the stepovers myself.

Once you get over the stigma that step-throughs are "girls' bike", is there really any advantages that a step-over has over a step-through?
Some say step overs are more rigid. I don't know how you would gage the difference. I really think it's more a feeling.

Really depends on the weight. I believe some of the Hollywood racks would work. Unfortunately I have a Camaro and need to get a new car before I can get a hitch and travel with the bikes.

Good video.. but I'll always think of the step through versions as "the women's model." I'm 6' tall and I don't have any problem with the step over version, so that's the one I'd get.

@@mikerochester I'm still doing the endless research of e-bikes.. thousands of makes and models by hundreds of manufacturers.. it's daunting as heck! I just recently started looking at the fat tire models, something I never thought would be for me. The Aventure I've been looking at hard.

@@mikerochester if I get it it will be from a local bike shop. Reading to many horror stories of terrible customer service when getting online... Like bad communication should anything go wrong. I like the idea of going to the bike shop I bought it from and having them deal with any issues, like missing/broken parts, maintenance, tune ups ect.
@@18andlikeit no worries. Bad news travels fast anytime I've dealt with them they've been very reactive. My brother actually had them pay the bill for a bike shop to repair his brakes and they also give $100 discount for a small scratch.

My personal opinion is this is a great ebike for the price. When I bought mine about a year ago it was a bit less but I don't feel that would have made a difference today.

I will use mine as a grocery runner, to the gym, and fun. I bought it with the basket on rear so the step through made the most sense to me. Big question when will I receive my purchase????

I own two of Aventon Aventure's. They are great bikes.
But the step thru arrived with issues, and both bikes were missing parts. On the step-thru, it took me six hours of work to modify the channel containing brake line and electrical wires behind the battery, just to get the battery to stay in.
Almost six months later they still have not shipped the part.
So while the bikes ended up good, the quality control and customer service was terrible.
I would not recommend this company.
I would defiantly recommend contacting them directly by phone if email haven't been responsive for you.
Buy through a dealer and you won’t have any issues like that… Ours came set up from the dealer and they threw in free mirrors and tire sealant for free.

Well that's a tough question. I personally feel like the step over is more sturdy however we have a different seat on the step through which makes the ride feel more like it's floating and swaying a little bit.
I personally prefer the step over I'm 5'11 and got the large frame.

I haven't done an actual range test, but it seems to do well. I feel like if I was in pedal asset one I could do like 40 miles. There is a huge difference between throttle only and using pedal assist.

I'm 5.11 and glad I went with the large step over. Depends what bike you're getting step through or step over. I believe the website has a chart.
@@mikerochester I’m planning on the step over. The chart has medium frame to 5’10 so it’s only an inch bigger going to the large. How much room do you have while standing over the bar? Thanks for the info.
@@tomb9727 lol....I had to go outside and stand over the bike to get a good idea. When hurtling the bike both feet are flat however I am touching. I kind of feel like the seat is more annoying as there's not a lot of room from the front to back.
Either way I'm kind of used to it now and it doesn't bother me.
@@mikerochester I got rid of my prior e-bike because I didn't feel safe when stopping. The bar was high. It looks like a step thru would allow easier feet on the ground at intersections with traffic. Glad to hear that there is not much riding difference.
water bottle is fine were it is in the step thru i have size 12 shoes and easy step thru with the bottle there. please dont mislead people
We had the water bottle there and it interfered, this is our opinion this may not be the same for all people as everyone has their own opinions.

It’s likely just frame size differences vs people size differences. Like everything, it works for some and doesn’t for others.

I feel like the L step over would be better. Unless there is a reason you need the step threw. I probably should have the step threw because of my leg but I'm happy with the L step over and I'm 5 11 about 250 lbs.

Excellent review. I have the Aventon level commuter step over. I think the extra frame piece helps with overall stability especially because I weigh a lot lol. Where exactly did you get that cup holder? I need one just like that.

I just wish to hell mine came with working brakes, a controller that wasn't weaksauce claiming 10mph is 20, didn't come with a chain 4 links too short, and that their warranty support took less than ten days to tell me to take it to a local repair shop when I'm MORE than capable of swapping out a caliper, chain, and controller on my own. Particularly when I bought online to avoid the local shops who I have trust issues with.
Even better would be if the communitiy didn't play "move the goalpost" the past six months repeatedly saying I'm "not paying enough" doubling how much I "should be paying" every time I get a defective bike. I'm three vendors and three bikes deep, and I'm starting to think the ENTIRE e-bike thing is either a rich man's sport, or a giant bullshit scam.
Pray that nothing goes wrong with either of yours, their "support" basically tells you to eat static.

My brother got his bike a couple weeks ago and they substituted the shifter with a no-name brand.
They did send new parts and they're paying to have it installed
@@mikerochester I JUST got an e-mail saying same. They're sending me a new rear brake assembly and a chain.
Have to say that in riding it around a abandoned parking lot where braking isn't an issue, I hate the shifter as I can barely reach it, I hate the throttle as I can barely reach it and it's kind-of on the wrong side...
I'm REALLY not impressed with the Aventure. It's worse than the Nakto's I had die two in a row that cost half the price.
Going to try and tough it out though, since I'm NOT shipping a fourth bike back for refund.
@@jasonknight1085 I loosened and tuned the throttle to me. Most manufacturers I believe have the throttle on the richt. I have to say though I'm kind of used to it on the left now. Doesn't interfere with shifting. Stinks your having all those problems thought.
@@mikerochester Thing is my problem with both the trigger shifter and the throttle is they're too far away from the grip. I basically have to let go of the grip to reach them, and changing what angle they're at doesn't help. Reaching the PAS control is even more absurd.
But then I've got short wide fingers, I oft joke I've got oven mitts for hands.
The Nakto's I had die were perfect ergonomically for me. I'm not sure how this is going to work out given it seems to be designed for Andre the Giant's hands.
I'm wondering if swapping to a different style of grip might help.
Really if I do end up keeping this thing I'm going to end up blowing another $500 on ergonomics and usability.
Though if I send it back, I'll have basically blown an entire YEAR on trying to get a working e-bike.
I'm REALLY sick of the moving goalpost. First $800 wasn't enough, then $1500 wasn't enough, then $1900 wasn't enough... now I'm being told I should spend $3500 to four grand? Yeah... no.
I end up having to send this one back, I'm probably done with the whole idea of e-bikes. The companies for what I can afford do not seem to be the least bit reputable or reliable... and I'm not wealthy enough to blow $4000 just to have a $200 Amazon special Micargi with a motor strapped to it. (which is basically what places like Pedego sells)

I kinda like the looks of the step-through better. I think the water bottle would be easier to access too. Not sure if it will get in my way as I will mount the bike like a step-over in most cases as I'm over 6'.
I would definitely stay go for the step through then. Especially if you like the look better. Both have their advantages. Thanks for taking the time to comment. :)
