  • The historic Bryce Hospital in Alabama served as an insane asylum and treatment facility for more than 150 years. It has gained the reputation of being one of Alabama’s most haunted places, and now, Bryce is open to the public as the Bryce Hospital Museum in Tuscaloosa.
The University of Alabama purchased Bryce Hospital from the Alabama Department of Mental Health in 2010 and the last of its patients moved to a new facility in 2014. The old asylum has been transformed into a museum showcasing Alabama’s controversial mental health and civil rights history.
Visitors enter through a welcome center featuring the original staircase, which once led patients to treatment. Many enjoyed sliding down the banister for fun. However, life at Bryce was harsh for its residents.
Construction started in 1853, and the hospital opened its doors in 1861. Founded for humane treatment, by 1970, conditions were compared to concentration camps by Hal Martin, editor of The Montgomery Advertiser.
Bryce’s dark storied past has fascinated ghost hunters, paranormal enthusiasts, and curious teenagers for decades. Over 5,000 of its patients are buried in the hospital's four cemeteries and about half are anonymous.
Those visiting the grounds report hearing unexplained sounds like footsteps, disembodied voices, whistling, and crying. Some even say they’ve seen apparitions of a doctor and a nurse, shadow figures, and orbs.
Is Bryce Hospital really haunted? History gives us some clues.

My grandmother was a patient on my dad’s side. I never got to meet her. This is so sad. My dad died in a car accident. I called the hospital when I was 16 to get information and I was denied and wasn’t given the opportunity to visit her.

Also my dad’s twin brother was admitted and supposedly committed suicide while he was admitted.
