  • Don't get off the backroads in Alabama! Or maybe, you should!
So in March of 2023, I took a major road trip throughout the deep south and a big part of the trip was criss-crossing throughout the great state of Alabama.
The goal was to get an up close look at how folks in Alabama live their lives. And the rule was - no highways. Cause you don’t get to know the real Alabama going 85, do you?
I’m gonna take you on a little journey. Together, we’re going to explore all kinds of Alabama. I think you’re going to learn a lot more about this state. I know I did.

I've traveled all across this country so much I should've been a trucker. You can't find more a more down-to-earth willing to help you out spirit than the people in Alabama. I ended up there for a while by accident and I'm glad I did. The people there taught me a lot about what it means to be a human being. I wish I could be more specific online, but you can't talk bad to me about Alabama. I just won't hear it, one side or another. YMMV, but they all showed me acceptance and kindness, didn't matter what shape I was in (and I wasn't in a good situation at the time). I'll take that with me for life.

There's something about your videos that lightens my mood. You listen and intuitively encourage people to share their core values. Many of the people you talk with feel like a friend from my past when folks were down to earth and just themselves. Particularly in Arkansas and Alabama. Reassuring to see that the church is still important in the life of these small communities. Mappy's takes are on the mark and always make me smile ( and he always made me laugh out loud when he shot his gun out west). Anyway, thanks for making it possible for me to go along on this ride.

I know this is not going to be a popular comment, but as an animal rescue worker who moved from Boston to the South for a couple of years... I've never seen so many discarded animals on the side of the road and just puppies in boxes and damn I couldn't take it it was some of the most depressing things I've seen. I'm sure you Southerners will be happy to know that I high-tailed it back to Boston where I could stomach the animal laws a little more 😢 but, some of the hardest working animal volunteers I have ever seen in my life and I've been doing this for 30 years.

I've lived on both coasts and the Midwest. I've been to 5 continents and a dozen or so countries. I drove 3,500 miles west, with 3 cats and my wife in the car and 4 cats, plus wife, heading 3,500 miles back east. I'm "sub-rural". I mean, it's full of farms but also town shopping areas. Quiet and peaceful. Beautiful and full of wildlife. Sometimes deer scratch themselves on my house, and when the owls chat, the coyotes yip, because they can't reach the owls. Turkeys, beaver, bear, and all types of critters. Farm stores with milk from cows that I wave to on my commute. It is really wonderful. My house was named "Slice of Heaven" by a friend from the city, he's like a brother. I've known him since 1986. The joy on his face, from walking around my woods was heart warming. He is in the city, but he was raised in the suburbs. Everyone needs to get out and into nature. It's good for you.

Yesterday I heard “Sweet Home Alabama” on the radio and thought to myself, “Nick Johnson is the only reason I know what he means when he talks about Muscle Shoals.” From the Cowboy Church (do they dress like cowboys for church there?) to the fried apple pie (looks kinda like an apple fritter), you show us things in America that no one else does, and from convenience store workers to managers of tractor supply companies, you seek out people whose opinions are rarely shared elsewhere. I hope that people everywhere can get to understand each other better through your videos and grow as people. You’re truly doing God’s work here, Nick. Keep up the great work!

I live in Florida not far from Alabama line and go to Alabama often, I've been up to Birmingham, of course we bypassed it, been up to North Alabama and found it quite nice! I read where Huntsville is larger than Montgomery. I've lived in the country for almost 30 years and being older I like it my daughter and grandkids live here and while they don't hate it they would like to move to bigger cities, I told them when you do you'll be back here when you realize how to much it is! Lol

Thanks Nick for doing such a great video on my adopted state of residence here in Alabama. It was nice to see my area in Cullman county getting some love; I have rented U Hauls at that Cornerstone market in Cullman that you went to and have had interaction with that same lady too. Nice you stopped at Pop's cafe in nearby Hanceville; Ive heard that place is really good. I see it all the time cause I work pretty close to there. I like you also lived in So Cal for most of my life before moving here almost 7 years ago. Thanks for showing your You Tube audience how nice it is here, thanks again.

Nice finding that Bear Bryant hat! Gary Busey actually starred in a biographical film about Bryant - titled "The Bear", that came out a year or so after Bear Bryant passed away in the early 1980s.

He mentioned Prattville, and said it was nice. He didn't do it justice. When I was finishing up from Air Force officer school in Montgomery, my parents were coming from Pennsylvania for my graduation. I looked around Montgomery and thought, "No way I want my parents here!" Yeah, I did see some nice parts, but overall, I thought Montgomery was a dump. It's especially bad around the base. So I booked my parents a hotel in Prattville. It's a beautiful town. I also bought them tickets to see a play at their big Shakespeare theater. It's quite impressive. And the theater is surrounded by these sprawling gardens. My dad and I weren't so into the gardens, but my mom liked it. If it's not too far from where you live, I'd recommend checking out the town.

When I was around 16 my parents because of work, told my little brother and I that we were leaving California and moving to Alabama. I thought my life was ruined. Fast forward a few years and I graduated HS in Alabama and was completely in love with the state and her people. After HS I joined the military and never made it back to Alabama, I settled back in California where most of my family lived. I look back fondly on those two years I lived in Alabama and wouldn't trade that time for anything.
