I Went To The Most Liberal Place In West Virginia

- You aren't gonna believe this part of West Virginia!
This is not your normal West Virginia. We’re in Morgantown, home to West Virginia University. It’s by far the most liberal place in this state. You could actually draw a circle for 500 miles and not find a higher concentration of Democrats.
People in Morgantown take pride in being ‘different’ then the rest of West Virginia. The liberals here’ll tell ya - we’re educated and a lot of us have good jobs. We have big world aspirations. We’re not dumb chew spitting inbred hicks.
I’m here because I wanted to see what it was like and talk to some of the people who live here in this mysterious, rare liberal land.
This was day 3 on my great Appalachian adventure, and the first stop in West Virginia - the only state that’s completely in the Appalachian region. We’re gonna spend the next four stops here in the mountain state. There’s plenty of time to see poverty and rundown and the effects of drugs. But we’re gonna begin in a different type of place. I think.

What a way to colonize each state.. I suppose you would of had to have a lot of 'colonists' with the same drive to really captivate a land... What a reach.

People in West Virginia are sick of outsiders (who know nothing of their lives) poking fun at them. If it makes them overly sensitive to anyone asking questions, I can understand that.
That makes me offended im a west Virginian i dont like the liberals and democratics the reason west virginia is good is that its republican!

Same for most Kentuckians as well.

Nick all I can say is be careful when interacting and interviewing people, as you never know what they're thinking, or what they'll do next. Not everyone has the ability to agree to disagree.
Hear Hear !!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, and when you’re not from there and they pride themselves on a fighting spirit… 🤔
I think he’s just trying to do his job so he can give us the best Content, but I most definitely agree 100%. Lots of people don’t have the capability to agree or disagree in a healthy way or adult manner. Also, yes, especially when it comes to strangers since there’s little we know about them there’s a chance they could turn violent easily.
Its hard to determine who really is sociable or not. They might have trigger words, but would otherwise be friendly. The previous videos where he interviewed homeless people shows even they can be friendly. But its hard to know who has a "Karen" button, and what subject pushes that button.
Yeah. I agree. Especially intoxicated people. However, I don’t think you come off as aggressive or anything.
I was born and raised in good ole' West Virginia for 70 years now, so sick and tired of others poking fun at us and calling us hillbillies.
I was born and raised in the Appalachians. I'm now in Northern VA but have a lot of family in WV and have followed developments in WV. The issues impacting WV are many and complex.
But here's a simple issue: people don't like condescension and one does not need a college education to recognize it.
After watching this video, I can understand why the "drunk redneck" had his feathers ruffled in the beginning. He likely saw the condescension. Everyone has something of value to say - don't try to engage in conversation if you refuse to recognize that.
couldnt agree more
💯 agree!
He obviously didn't have anything of value to say, not everyone does.
Yep. The kid asking questions is super smug and antagonistic.
West Virginia is trash.
I’m so sick of people trashing WV and the people. That poor guy living in a shanty would be the first person to scoop you off the road as you lay dying.
He probably also has green teeth.

My family and I moved to the Bay Area a few years ago and I’m thinking of purchasing a single family home, but with real estate prices currently through the roof, is it still a good idea to buy a home or should I invest in stocks for now and just wait for a housing market correction? I heard Nvidia and AMD are strong buys.
it’s a personal decision, but Forbes says housing activities will remain stagnant for the most part of the year, so maybe hold off a little.
well you could put a downpayment on a home and as well diversify as much as you can into Ai and pharm. stocks like Pfizer and JnJ.
Certain Ai companies are rumoured to be overvalued and might cause a market correction, I’d suggest you go with a managed portfolio, but even those don’t perform so well, so it’s best you reach out to a proper fiduciary to guide you, that’s what works for my spouse and I.
this is all new to me, where do I find a fiduciary, can you recommend one?

This was one of the most cherry picked videos about West Virginia and particularly Morgantown that I’ve ever seen. You left out that Morgantown is home to a Power 5 University, with research capabilities that are on par with the biggest higher education institutions in the world. You left out that Morgantown has one of the U.S. Government National Labs that is innovating every day to solve the world’s energy problems. You left out the beautiful neighborhoods of Suncrest, Cheat Lake, and the surrounding area that boast multi-million dollar homes and instead showed the run down parts that every city has, regardless of location. You tailored this video to what the vast majority of people’s preconceived notions of what West Virginia is like rather than showing what it truly is; a state with a wide diversity of view points, with people fiercely loyal to it and willing to help almost anyone, regardless of beliefs or differences. I implore you to revisit this and make a video that truly captures what the people stand for. It’s a true shame.

Kind of the same thing that people do to minority groups everywhere. They see what they want to see, and don't want to take the time to get to know the true nature of an individual.
I use to live in Morgantown. Joe Manchins daughter received an MBA from the business school at WVU. She got busted because she never really took the courses. She simply donated a boat load of money, and she was Joes daughter. It was a HUGE scandal. The school president and the Provist got fired. She lost her MBA I believe. Welcome to WestBygod

West Virginia has lots of charm and contrasts. One of the most beautiful states in america.
I love that there's run down and abandoned places and that the cities didn't grow since the 1950s because that means they didn't tear town the old building and didn't replaced them. The small and mid size mountain towns are beautiful.
One of the most beautiful states in America? Do you live under a rock? It’s one of the most disgusting states if not the most disgusting.
Nick, go into some local WV bars, tell them you're a born-and-bred Californian, and you're here to tell them what to do.
🤣😂that would be a very intelligent move.
OMG. Please don't do that, Nick.
That’s right, tell them you have big plans to help improve the town like more Tesla chargers and vegan friendly food options. They will love it.
Oh and bike paths. Definitely tell them they need more bike paths, and green energy…..they will welcome you with open arms.

The average 18 year old doesn't understand shit about almost anything outside of their bubble. The law might call you an adult but 18 is a kid.
It is all good. We were all 18 at some point but what I've learned is that as you age you can take you're life experience good and bad and gain some wisdom. When you gain that wisdom share it with others in a positive way without making others feel like shit. That being said don't close you're ears to others that have been there before you. If you don't look at the past now and then you'll probably make the same mistakes in the future

I agree. Just because someone is educated, it doesn't mean they are intelligent.
I like it when you take risks and get out and talk to real people, even when they make no sense. And I like all the shots of "how this place looks today," whether good or bad. I like that you ask tough questions, and admit that you don't have the answers, either.

The one guy sitting there talking about Joe being out to lunch has a good understanding overall.
We have seen Trump's typical lunch menu (McDonalds). Like my neighbors grandchildren, Trump treats his food in a similar fashion: 'Donald Trump threw his lunch against the wall after AG Bill Barr said there was no widespread election fraud, ex-White House aide testifies." If you're interviewing college kids in Morgantown, chances are you're going to get alot of Jersey kids.

It is funny how you said that, because that was the case over 30 years ago. I knew 2 people back when I lived in NJ, who went to WVU. Also, heard about other people from the more rural parts of NJ who attended there. Morgantown cannot be too much more than 4 hours away from areas within NJ.
@@manfredmann2766 I went to Frostburg State back in the late 80s. There was a bunch of kids from Jersey going there as well.
Be careful going around the Appalachians, Nick. This is the second time you have encountered aggressive behavior (in McCreary County, KY and now WV). There are a lot of good, God-fearing people living in that region but also some of the more hardcore, more intense people probably because they were hardened by poverty all their lives. When the government regulates their livelihoods to the point of extinction, it's easily understandable the bitterness and frustration they might feel when dealing with outsiders. When I was in the military, I had a few West Virginians in my platoon. They're some of the most humble, down to earth fellas I've ever associated with.

Greetings from Brazil, man! I'm absolutely addicted to your channel. It is very good to see all of the nuances in american culture and politics while comparing to Brazil. I've once heard someone say the U.S. is going through a "Brazilification", specially in the most liberal areas, which I agree, since most liberal areas tend to have more lenient criminal laws (like not arresting people that steal goods up to a certain price tag, here in Brazil there isn't legislation about it, but the court system "legislates" on its own even though we come from a Civil Law [Roman tradition] background isntead of a Common Law [Anglo tradition] like you) but on that note, Brazil has been going through a Americanization process with more people fighting for individual freedoms, the right to bear arms, a more open economy, less state, etc.
People here are getting more educated on libertarianism and confronting those ideas with the ideas imposed on us ever since our monarchy fell and the tide is turning. Whereas we used to have elections leaning almost 80% towards the left, the last 2 elections basically ended 51/49. Let's see what the future holds for us, brother. This october I'll go to Canada and I hope to travel to the U.S. someday, love your culture and history and I always wanted to get to know the real USA, as shown in your videos. Keep it up. Sort of off topic, but as a native Brazilian what year would you say Brazil changed for the worse? As in how many years now has Brazil been considered “more dangerous” by outsiders? I’m fascinated by Rio de Janeiro and am curious what caused brazils overall decline besides bad laws / drugs. Christ the redeemer overlooking a crime ridden city is bizarre to me.

I love your videos!!! Keep up the fantastic work!!!
I enjoy each and every one of your videos, Nick. Never stop.
I second that.
This was so good. 😊
Love to Hear people
Lol! “What’s going the right way?””ummmmmmmmm”” wrong way? “”Ummmmmmmm.”….Is this college teaching these kids anything?!
How did he into college?
I am sure that he was just very cautious about sharing his opinions with a stranger...
@@matthewhopson964 let's hope so
The bar must be SO low to get into that "university"
The smartest ppl I've met are the ones going to trades or aren't in college.
Yeah, I don't know what's going on with college students? I guess college just ripped them off for money?
The young man at 2:44 gave perfect answers. I've been around the block a few times and he summed it up perfectly!
Smart kids
The 2:44 kid is a total freeloading dipshit.
I’m hoping to move to West Virginia from Brooklyn NY soon… I don’t agree with your political views mostly but I like your videos and you give a pretty good in depth picture, literally, of the place… if taking your occasional sarcasm sometimes with a bit of salt… good to know… I love ❤️ West Virginia… so beautiful 😍…
Wow you’re having a ball in WEST VIRGINIA AINT YA!😂. This is a great series totally enjoyable
My sister @rosemaryketchum is on the city council in wheeling West Virginia. I don’t want to speak for her but I bet she’d be interested in talking about how West Virginia is changing in her area if you were to reach out.
West Virginia is a beautiful state! I hope you do a video on New River Gorge, Charleston, Wheeling, and some of the dying small towns due to the coal industry leaving in southern West Virginny
All of that is covered
Love how you focus on the negative.
What the hell? As a foreigner who is completely unaware of the whole problem he seems to have with West Virginians, all I see is one classist guy being mean to people who are just living their lives in his hometown. What a shame!
Well Morgantown sure seems different than the rest of the state. Most of the people I meet in WV are kind, caring, and would take the shirt off their own back to give to you. Same for eastern KY. But maybe I'm saying that just because of the circles I'm in. I say it doesn't really matter what part of the country you're in, you're going to run into some crazy people - and some very kind people.
From my little experience I had with WV, people are very kind and caring.
My car was broken down in WV in a road trip last year. I went to different car parts stores looking for parts that I needed. Everyone I encountered is very nice and caring. They made sure I got everything I needed. Despite, I'm Asian and speak broken English, they are still very nice and kind to help me out.
@@engrishsheep That's wonderful! Yes, I had a similar experience here in KY about 5 min from WV. My truck fell off its ball joint here in the Kroger parking lot, and within 5 minutes or less, several men came out of nowhere, got on their backs and proceeded to give me several different opinions of what was wrong. Two women even came up to me and told me they would pray for me. There are so many good and kind people here. And of course, the people in my church are super friendly.
Good people were just good people before Donald Trump. So So Sad!
@@traceytrotter9934 Trump got them all hooked on meth and weed? Interesting.
@@holdenc3082 He would like to keep them that way.
I am absolutely loving this series on Appalachia, despite the unfortunate issues you are having with some locals. I hope you managed to stop in some of the more out of the way areas of WV like Welch or Pineville. Those areas really show the WV culture, which can be a bit different than many other of the Appalachian cultures through that range.
Oh I do :) just wait

Hey Mappy!! Nick, that was a shtty move pushing that pizza roll in Mappy's face!
The segments at 2:42 and 18:02-21:24 are basically Jaywalkin' shorts if Jay Leno was still hosting the tonight show. What do you expect from them college dopes? It fits in well in this eye opening topic. Man at 22:50 was keepin it 💯tho. So does segment 25:14, which sums up quite telling about Morganstown if not West Virginia at large, based off this report.
It reminded me when I was working at a Walgreens near Times Square, NYC and talked to a guy from Huntington, WV in assistance to head back home (he had to get money from western union kiosk in store, since he lost wallet when he misplaced as taxi drove away). I asked in part what was life like in WV, he said it used to be a booming state with coal mining industry in its place until those industries shut down + left, costing jobs in turn. Living in that rural part of life didn't make it easier. Taking that insight, this report expanded that perspective.
Born in WV. Don’t remember it. Raised in the east Bay CA. Been a cop on the peninsula for over 20years. Nick, love what you do and how you do it. Please please be careful (street smart) in encountering strangers! 90% of what we communicate is body language. Remember that!
Damn I’m sorry man. You know this video isn’t anything like it really is here right?
Man on the street finds people out of thier comfort zones, therefore they frequently can't answer well in the moment but sit down in thier turf and truth pours out freely.
@8:23 isn't in Morgantown at all. I see "Washington" painted on the wall and on a sign, so I assume you filmed this about 45 minutes away in Washington, PA. Which has roughly half the population of Morgantown.
Great video Nick. This is on par with Colbert vaccine musicals 😂😂
I think that the land conversation about guns and deer was a fair point. I think that the student discussing how he likes eggs. I am hearing middle school student level thoughts of a hungry man. I am glad you were able to interview them and you nailed it on the head. They're not educated enough to the levels that they should be. At least at the bar you got honest answers from the guy sitting there discussing both Trump and Biden. He's not the only one who' thinks this way.
With "woke" culture on college campuses, do you really expect kids to publicly say what they think, especially if they're heterosexual white males?
No, it's not a good point. No gun control plans remove your standard game-hunting rifle. No one is going to do that; no one even wants to do that. That's purely fear talking from someone who hasn't taken the slightest look at any gun control proposal.
@@amouramarie they should be no gun control , as proved mamy times, it makes it worse and only effect law abide folks .notice all these bad events like shootings happen in weapon free zones and where very strict laws are ? Seams like bad evil folks don't follow laws don't it? And use the laws to there advantage .but , the left use every event to try to take more rights ..hits folks why they hurt , broken hearted to get then to give up freedoms.Sad peole so week minded and deceived my tv, media, those in power
The next YooHoo is on me. Thank you for your service, Nick!
SWEET! I'M GONNA GET ONE RIGHT NOW.
That campus looked beautiful, at least that core section in the beginning of the video.
You should probably visit in the spring or summer. The wintery weather and the locals don't make for any kind of positive image, to say the least.
