I am very impressed with the clear techniques that you explain. The shadow first technique in particular is extremely satisfying and quickly effective; it’s perfect for the fast pace of urban sketching - if the scene changes or you have to go, the essence is captured!
Enjoyed your video. your drawing line flow is amazing, direct, and without hesitation. Good perspective with imaginary vanishing point. WOW. Thank you!
Thank you. I found your video very inspiring and informative. Knowing how to start is probably a big barrier for many of us who have not yet tried urban sketching and would like to.
@4:52 Never thought of doing signs in that way ... The outline first then fill in the letters ... Genius . You learn something new everyday . thanks Wee Teck , Brilliant Sketch .
It's amazing how you make everything look so easy. And I've never used blue to build up skin tone. It's surprising how you made it work. I always make mistakes in painting skin. Sometimes mine turn up too yellow, sometimes they're too red.
Hey thanks for tuning in! I learnt the skin tone from Don Andrews. Took a workshop from him in Michigan and it was very effective. Glad you pop by… 🙏🙏😊
@@WheeTeck I've been so busy with my channel too. But I got a lull in my schedule and wanted to surf for a change. So glad to have watched your beautiful urban sketch

Haha… yes I “stole” it from my sketching friends too… so nothing new here… Yes my horizon (Vanishing Point) video is a good one if you haven’t seen it… 🙏
This is really amazing. The drawing is simple and yet really tells a story. I love it! A question - what kind of paper do you use? the pen marks are smooth so I am guessing its not watercolour paper? Is it cartridge paper or something else? And what weight?
Hi hi. I highly suggest for drawing with fountain pens, use Hot Press watercolor papers. Cold Press is not so good unless you want textures. For CP papers I would rather use pencil…. Hope that helps!!
@@WheeTeck hey! thank u so much for your reply. i noticed it after a week as was going through a few turmoil! great tips. but why do i fail to produce thinner lines with my fude nib pens i still don’t understand! 🙈

But I've realised after watching this video that maybe I get too lost in the details. So I'll give live sketching another try using these tips. Thank you once again 🙏😊

Hey I made a video just for you on this... check it out... it's not so straight forward, 2min video, let me know if you need any other tips... ruclips.net/video/LKDAyJJWv2I/видео.html
I like the video, but sometimes is a bit difficult to relate to urban sketching when you are sketching from a photo, because in real life peoples move quickly and change in their perspectives. It would be really interesting if you can make videos on location.😉
It is true! The experience is completely different. But let me offer 2 points. 1) if you cannot sketch from photo you cannot sketch live. It is 5 times (or more) more difficult sketching real life than from photo. So it is good practice with photo. 2) You need to design, even urban sketching. Even if you choose not to use imagination when placing figures, you will still to move around and find the perspective you want, i.e. design your sketch. Before you start drawing. Otherwise, the aesthetic outcome of your sketch will be a hit and miss. Your suggestion is a valid and a good one. I’ve been thinking about doing video on site, but the Covid situation in Singapore is not helping. So have to wait a little more 🙏🙏 😊
I completely agree with your points, I have my art degree in design so I’m kinda “trained” in the design area, but I was looking for more tips and tricks specifically in drawing people in urban sketching/sketching on location setting, so yea… hopefully the covid situation is going to get better soon.
Ah I see… well, let me know if you have any specifics things you are looking for, we can learn from each other… the urban sketching community is a great one, very open to sharing secrets and knowledge 😊🙏
It’s always so fun to watch you sketch. How long did this piece take you in real life? 😅 A lot of great tips especially on drawing the perspective right. I really like how you often draw the outline shape before filling in the details. It’s interesting how you always get the perspective and size right even when you start with the outline! I’m still getting a mess 😆
It took me about an hour to draw and color. I focus a lot on the SIZE. If you get that wrong that’s it. Recovery mode all the way to the end… been there done that too many times… so I guess learnt from experience….

Great video. Complex yet you make it look so easy. I am working on a street scene and will apply this trick.many thanks.

Hi thank you for your kind words. I use either Cold Press or Hot Press watercolor papers. I use between 190gsm and 300gsm. In this case HP 300gsm.
Very helpful. Lots of useful tips, especially when considering perspective.

great video highly skilled and well presented. btw in real time how long did it take to sketch and paint from start to finish?
Hey thanks! Thank you for tuning in. It took me about 50min total time, not too bad… normally I try to spend no more than an hour for a sketch.
I enjoyed your video and sharing of the process you use. You mentioned using all transparent colors. Would you please share your paint colors and brands in your palette?
I mostly use Daniel Smith, for actual colors check this video out ruclips.net/video/oz0OrhzfQw0/видео.html
Actually yes I do suggest Artist quality if you can afford it. The amount of “real” pigments matter…
