Love your channel it gives me a little sun shine in my life while i care for my mom she has dementia i spend 17 to 20 hr a day here with her going on 4 years now think you for the light!
'Conjour emotions'. You just defined music, defined your channel and defined my personal version of why we slap the strings. Bravo. That might be the most profound statement you have made on this show. And I've been watching since episode 2 corona.
Two weeks ago when we rehearsed i started cry when my friend went into a leadpart, emotion 100% I am a beginner playing in a band, but oh my god how it touches me every wednesday night. My bandmates have played 40 years and i only 5 years. I learn so much from them, and they push me to take leadstuff and go for it and step out of my comfortzone. Tom, your channel is just the best one out there.
Hey Tom. This past November some nerve damage made my left hand almost totally numb and it's unlikely I'll ever play guitar again. My consumption of RUclips guitar content has dwindled to nearly zero, but I still love listening to your ramblings. Wish I could play, but until then, if ever, I'll just live vicariously through your videos. Thanks man.
Not even strong enough to hold a slide up let alone any muting or fretting. Lefty…. Literally like starting over from zero. Not sure I have it in me. Maybe in time.
Man, Tom, sometimes you don't know you need a little acoustic beauty until you hear some in the morning. It was a good segue to when you talked about emotion. Sometimes you don't know how much hurt you're carrying until there's a place for it to go. Thank you.
I remember staying up late to see the "World Premiere" of the "If This Is It" video on MTV in 1984 when I was a kid and we just got cable. Remember when that was a thing? Anyway... great video on the beach... the money shot was the guys in the band buried in the sand up to their heads singing the "oooooooh wop" background parts!
Tom Picked up that Trigger Hippy album when you first talked about it. Very cool We listen to it often. Any other favorites your on? Happy Trails and thank you
I caught TH on one of those good nights, when you tore the roof off the Ardmore Music Hall. And in fact, that was my introduction to a guitar player named Tom Bukovac. My buddy and I went to see Jackie Green, but after a song or two, we took notice and were saying to each other "Man, who is that other guy?!?!
Tom, when ya said: "Try to get into the emotion & vibe of those songs on those classic records ( I'm paraphrasing of course, but same message ) much like a movie producer".........it gave me goosebumps, I kid you not. Because THAT has always been my philosophy when trying to learn & advance my guitar playing, singing, and performing, all throughout my life......and I just turned 62 yrs old. The result: People in audiences at ALL of my gigs would come up to me during breaks to say things like: "Dude, I don't just hear you, I FEEL you".........or "Dude, you cause me to get all misty when you perform these songs" ( that one really hits home )........and: "That was the best version of that song I've ever heard anywhere"......etc, etc. These types of compliments made it all worthwhile. The money earned paled in comparison. Because if you're not pouring your heart & Soul into performing songs ( and finding that vibe when listening to those old records ), and then trying to really move your audience.........then what the hell is the point. I NEVER once concentrated on "chord progressions" or "scales". I swear, I love you more & more every day Uncle Larry. You can take 2 guitarists who play the same song correctly note for note, yet one of those cats puts the feel & vibe into it........while the other dude's version seems "sterile". There's a Spirituality in good musical performances.
Such beautiful guitar music, always. I'm So glad I got to see a lot of 3rd & Lindsley gigs with you and Pat Buchanan. But these Uncle Larry days are the best. Love to SB from Portland. xoF.
The combination of exceptional music, profound thoughts, and expert insight is immensely valuable to me. It surpasses the impact of the numerous guitar lessons I've taken - a true treasure. best regards from Argentina!
i watched uncle larrys early spring collection sale early this morning, then i watched vol 34, strat fury for the i don't know couple 50 times, and now this stunning performance. gorgeous !!!!!
Your playing definitely brings out emotions. Great chat on that subject. My favorite I have seen bringing it out was Jeff Beck, and doubt he had any clue about what modes he was playing. He was amazing and expressing himself.
Scarlet, oh man, you do have taste brother! In guitars and women, and music, Did I say music? You are my Favorite and almost only reason for still getting online. I run a truck accessories shop in Texarkana TX. Love it, I'm 61 and played most of my life. You're the first complete content show I have seen in a LONG time. THANK YOU SO MUCH for saying what I knew and believed but never heard anyone in the business say, and the emotion connection. I have sought the simplest most direct way to say what I felt. Music is emotion in sound. One's expression is theirs or it isn't. Genres are languages within music, how well you speak them lies between your brain and your hands and, your determination to sculpt your sound,
The whole bit on conjuring emotions being our job and the whole point and what we should be practicing might actually be the best and most valuable advice on Homeskoolin' yet. Cheers Uncle Larry
If one looks at the guitar finger board it's patterns actually require seven strings to be understood. With those patterns there are several emotional states that define how music is played- with few exceptions, most of the greatest guitarists figure this out. They are not playing scales or modes. This is why they can play almost anything. They are making music. If you don/t know this already. Tom just gave you the most important guitar lesson you have had. This is one of the main reasons why Tim Pierce said he is the best studio guitarist he has seen, Tom plays music, not guitar.
I love this idea that records create worlds. That really nails it. Great artists create a complex feeling through their music. It can sound very human and then also very alien, but good ones suck you in and hold your attention. I sometimes think you can feel what the artist felt when they wrote a song. And I don't mean "aw such a sad song," but the weird cool chills/vibe a song can hit. I'm listening to one right now it just sounds amazing, but I couldn't explain why it is. It just is.
Hey Tom, talking of worlds and environments in songs and albums, I'm a big fan of The Band. I've listened since the start and don't think I've heard you mention them. They even wrote a song for your hometown. Thanks again man
Tommy, how do you prefer to smooth out the back of a guitar neck; sandpaper, 0000 Steel Wool, Scotch Guard… any suggestions for removing that gloss and giving it that smooth broken in feel? Thanks bud
Hey Tom, back in the day you said that you thought the 335 was the best/pinnacle of electric guitar design, have the Goldtop and Burst changed your opinion? As always, thanks for everything you’ve given us over the past 4 (holy shit) years- especially the inspiration.
The main thing I like about the South is....I can grow food all year (typically) in central Louisiana. But the severe freeze in December 2022 wiped out my vegetables. Usually you can cover frost tolerant plants with a tarp or greenhouse cover but not when it`s zero with 50+ mph winds. Lots of 50 year old fig trees froze back to the roots too. My Yankee cousins wouldn`t eat anything from a garden because...."it came from the dirt." Ha! I`m about to plant over a dozen fruit trees when they get hardened off to being outdoors.
Class, book mark this video . Uncle Larry has just dispensed sage advice on what the true core of playing/learning music. So lucky to have this channel. Make no mistake, however. Uncle Larry's knowledge of music theory is top notch. But the theory (modes, scales, harmony, etc) is a means to an end. A tool to get a job done
One of the most profound insights ever on Homeskoolin, in response to the banal question “what scales should I be practicing?” Larry, you’re the best. You eschew the bs and get to the real stuff. Thank you.
Is there a more emotional piece of music than the guitar parts on Shine on you Crazy Diamond? Even as a kid, I could feel that, and still do. It's fukn perfect. What you think Tom?
Hi Tom , did you get a chance to watch the Australian football ( Rugby League ) game they played in Los Vegas last weekend ? If not our season is just starting , you shoud try and watch some ..its a tough , fast and exciting game . Thanks for all the home school"in ..cheers Leigh
Your chords in the opening jam might the the best yet! About "emotional target": Strangely enough, I heard the same words from my music theory teacher back in the '70s. She taught the usual theory stuff (which I ate up), but when we listened to a symphony or string quartet, she always focused on the emotion of the piece, and correlated that with what was going on musically. She taught us kids that all those notes and chords don't mean much unless you feel it. Thanks for bringing it up. Follows well on your recent "money notes" episode with Brian -- same thing, really.
The emotions sucked me into guitar playing and what kept me . Can't believe you were in an econoline van band with Joan Osborne man I love her voice which really became a thing with the Funk Brothers , and her cover albums on top of the originals who else could make that kind of record today .
Years ago my first time in the south, I talked to a dude about ketchup at a Wendy's drive thru window for about 10 minutes. It was bizarre, but I loved it. Southern hospitality is the real deal.
Really dug you and the Hippies. Joan Osborne, what a voice. Love her in Standing in the Shadows of Motown docu. Especially What Becomes of the Broken Hearted.

If This Is It - Huey Lewis. Brilliant
Huey doesn't get enough recognition, so many great compositions, hooks, and melodies
