- How to ruin a beloved and successful franchise in 3 easy steps.
The most recent soft launch of Plants vs Zombies 3 - Welcome to Zomburbia was out in January 2024 and it's rocked the mobile gaming community with lack of content, features and to be perfectly honest.. enjoyment.
There are hardly any plants, you can't choose your load-out, you can't replay levels, there are no mini-games and dynamic difficulty means you're going to be forced into either consecutive losses or using the power-ups which are RIDICULOUSLY expensive. Microtransactions are nearly always poor value but the microtransactions in Plants vs Zombies 3 are terrible. The game will force you to lose so you're more likely to spend your 'hard earned' coins on them. And once you do, you're sucked into the sunk cost fallacy which makes quitting much more difficult.
Plants vs Zombies 3, in it's current state, is awful. It's the most transparent, contentless cash grab I have ever seen EA pull. Do yourself a favour, give this one a miss.

When I watched this video I thought you were some popular pvz commentary channel but then i saw that you only had 2.1k subs, your video quality is really good dude
Ah thanks dude! Just trying to navigate my way through this place. Appreciate the kind words though!
wow this video is underrated
Appreciated!
I agree, most of the level designs suck and the levels go by so fast that I dont even have a full row of peashooters by the final wave and get overpowered by the amount of zombies so they basically force you to use power ups
It feels so manipulative doesn't it? Like, how is it right that if you want to win you have to lose a bunch of times first to make it possible?
All i needed to hear... Not that I'm surprised.
Thanks for making this along with the collected data.
The sad thing is that games that make Money and don't devolve into microtransaction hell do exist, and work more than well. You talked about bloons, which has microtransactions, but I Never felt like I needed to buy anything. Even stuff that would be okay to put a pricetag on, like skins, you can get for free by doing five easier levels or two harder ones. Then there's Fate/Grand Order, the Emperor of gacha games and the only gacha where i Never felt like I was being forced into spending money.
I get corporate greed, but both lasengle and NinjaKiwi make more than enough Money with what they do, and don't Need to resort to cheap frustration/forced spending tactics
This is exactly right. I genuinely don't have a problem with Microtransactions when they are implemented like in Bloons and other similar games. The problems always come in when it becomes pay to win or, just like PvZ3, they choke the game and restrict it to hell. Wouldn't it be great to offer a paid version of the game where the brains weren't a thing and you could disable dynamic difficulty? It'd still have SO MUCH content missing, but it'd be a start at least.
The fact I saw news outlets praising this makes me wonder if the journalist ever played pvz1 or pvz2
Great video mate. keep up the good work👍
Thanks my friend! 🤜🤛
I cannot play the game due to the country i'm in. I dislike the graphics compared to pvz2 which looked MUCH better imo. Most of the new mechanics or level layouts that i found a decent idea, aren't even worth sh*t no more if you cannot replay the level. The original concept of pvz being always similar completely gets annnihilated by the 'adapted difficulty level' and the fact you cannot replay a level, lack minigames, and have most of the game be micro-transactions, a part of the game i disliked about pvz2, just makes me thing i really won't be playing this game anytime soon lol. Thanks for the informative video ! I suppose we're back to pvz1 minigames and pvz2 endless zones or sth huh....
Thanks for taking the time to write that. Personally I quite like the new art style but the appearance of a game will always be subjective. The original Plants Vs Zombies was such a great game and it's sequel wasn't terrible. But this... This is absolutely awful, which just seems like such a shame to me.
yep, i think art is better subjective :P but yea the gameplay needs to be on point, else even the best art wont save the game... thanks for the vid !@@TheGameFatherUK
Your forgot something else about the micro transactions part, the current sneaky and nasty way to make you spend MORE or lose the "3000% value at a huge 90% discount" kind of deal.
I first saw this scummy tactic on that recent DmC mobile game and seems like it's a new thing on freemium games because now PvZ3 is also doing it.
You're right. It definitely has a predatory feel towards it. Blizzard got so much hate (and rightly so) when they did the exact same thing on Diablo Immortal. Another game that has potential to be decent but utterly ruined by greed. IIRC that game birthed the 800% value meme. What's most frustrating is that is must work, otherwise why would they continue to do it? Such a shame too, PvZ 2 had microtransactions in it but they really felt optional, not at all like these.
Another soft release of PZ3? They've done this before. What is going on at Popcap?
Yeah I think this is soft release number 6 now. Amazing really considering how little there actually is to do in the game :/
@@TheGameFatherUK Seems like a waste of money.
Not popcap, EA
@@IamPeterfromEarth39383 I doubt ea cares about PVZ.
tbh i really like 1st soft launch of pvz3 it more polish, it has a lot of stuff and who cares about ''clash royal'' like game but this style look nice
How did we get to this point
My only answer to that is: low effort development to milk the success of what was previously a brilliant game. EA greed 😞
It’s so over 😔
Btw, this means that when you beat all the levels (150?) ,oure basically left with no more game ?
I don't actually know, but I guess you're probably right there. I don't think I can't find it myself to grind to whatever the current level cap is 😩
the game just gives you random levels you played before infinitely
How do you somehow sound like zero x fusion and redhead gaming at the same time?
Wow i heard pvz3 is quite bad but i didnt think it was this bad
I know :( It's such a shame!
I think it's more of popcap fault more than ea fault..
You may be right to be fair, I can't let go of the hate towards them though. RIP C&C 🪦
both
I agree with what you said, but when you said that it was ea that ruined games, it’s actually popcap choosing microtransactions for their games, even before the influence of EA
Huh, that was not how I understood the situation at all, but if it is, EA have my apologies. Although, they still have a lot of making up to do for ruining Command & Conquerer 😇
The culpability is shared between the 2 companies.
A beta that sucks so much and has microtransactions already... welp ...
BTD6 is awesome, take that PVZ.
So true!
EA am I right?
You are indeed 😞
pvz 3 is a joke for the fans. i will stick to 1 and 2 until someday popcap and ea makes a decent work on this. generic and greedy game, so sad seeing this happening to the franchise.
At least it can only get better I guess 🤷😞
