Join me for a fun, yet very muddy, collecting trip at a prolific obsidian source. Government Mountain obsidian is one of the most studied obsidian sources in AZ.

Great area! It seems like most of your time was spent at the actual tank, but a good vein starts at the very top of the hill on the opposite side of the road as the tank. Everything is on the surface too, no need for digging really. If you've found the flow you'll basically be walking on obsidian rather than dirt. Really large pieces and more likely to find mahogany and rainbow :)

Have you ever been to Glass Butte in Oregon? You can find almost every color that obsidian comes in there. It's one of my favorite places to go.

Yeah rainbow obsidian would be so fun to find. 😁

My friends & I are lucky enough to live in a state that has Mahogany, snowflake & normal black Obsidian rock. Where we go they're literally scattered all over the ground forever! We went crazy! We learned from exploring that we found 3 different kinds of Mahogany obsidian...
Our group picked up buckets of it. Can't wait to tumble mine!🙂

Just found your channel. I'm also from the area so it's cool to see all the various rocks and I'm learning new things as well. I work as an archaeologist so the Govt Mt. material I am very familiar with and have collected from the same area. Great information and I look forward to seeing more of your videos!

Thank you! I just went back to that spot last weekend. As an archeologist you’ll see something pretty cool in the next video. There was a large worked biface which was broken and I didn’t know how old it was. I left it there of course. My day job involves a lot of interpretation of archeology sites so I love seeing the human history interacting with the geology. 😊

Have you been near Parks? There was 3' of snow so I ended up hunting in someone's driveway and made out like a bandit. No mahogany, tho. Just love those conchoidal fractures! It's actually cathartic cracking them open . TFS 💖🦅🦅

This is near Parks so I imagine it’s similar. You take the Parks exit off I-40 to get here. You’re lucky no one caught you. Lol

That is a great place to find Obsidian! A friend of mine in the USFS showed me this site in the late 90's. I found some great material there. Well worth visiting. Great video! Very informative and fun! Beautiful scenery on the drive in, thanks for sharing!

Good video. Mahogany is beautiful but I always liked snowflake obsidian. I'm going to Lavic Siding outside of Barstow, CA in a couple weeks. I'll vlog the adventure.

I do the same thing. But I had a beautiful piece of fire Agate that someone took from my yard and I was livid I tell ya. I think it was one of the guys putting in fiber optic cables for the new internet in our area, because it was there before they were working on my street. They clipped my sewer line on Friday so I didn't have use of a bathroom for 4 days, then it took them another 3 days to find where they hit the pipe. I was more upset about the rock missing than the sewer problem. Lol I looked them in the eyes and said, That is The Golden Rules, You don't take from people's yards! They just laughed at me. Oh well though, Karma will find whoever took it. I'm over it now, & it's kinda funny how I reacted over a rock. Lol 😂

Love how you give the history on the place, very interesting. That mahogany is beautiful! I'm going to guess the gray has a sheen to it, known as silver sheen obsidian. The piece at the 22:00 minute mark is classic. I never thought I would collect obsidian, but I have and I'm glad I did. It will be a true challenge to tumble it from what I hear. Thanks for sharing your trip to Government mountain.

I’m not too versed in the different sheen types. Even small pieces of this obsidian are pretty opaque though. I was pretty successful tumbling them. There’s another video on that. 😋
