  • Asphalt City hit American theaters this week and follows Ollie Cross (Tye Sheridan), a young paramedic assigned to the NYC night shift with an seasoned partner Gene Rutkovsky (Sean Penn). The dark nights reveal a city in crisis; Rutkovsky guides Cross, as each 911 call is often dangerous and uncertain, putting their lives on the line every day to help others. Cross soon discovers firsthand the chaos and awe of a job that careens from harrowing to heartfelt, testing his relationship with Rutkovsky and the ethical ambiguity that can be the difference between life and death.
Tune in to hear whether the film hits home and is worth a trip to the theater.

I’m a Firefighter/Paramedic in the Houston area. I started in EMS in 2001. They really did their homework with this movie. Pretty spot on.

This film has really stuck with me. Thanks so much for your service and for the sacrifices you have to make day in and day out

Fdny emt here. I watched it in theaters, and it hits pretty close to home. The calls in the movie are pretty spot on for what we do get occasionally here. The gallows humor between the partners is pretty accurate (although irl, it’s not all dark gallows humor. There’s lighthearted fun between partners as well, but then again, the movie is going for grit) The fact they used actual 911 frequencies in the movie added to the realism. Although I will say most of the calls are not all dark and grim and intense. Then again the movie is tackling on mental health awareness in ems from what I gathered.
The sirens deafening your eardrums for most of the movie: yeah, those sirens are pretty spot on in those regards. I’m surprised I don’t have tinnitus yet. (Knock on wood)
The excessive nudity could have been done without tbh. You can still depict how mental health in ems affects people around you without the excessive sex. Then again, like you said, French director. A couple of other things wouldn’t slide, but all in all, a heck of a way to raise awareness. There’s still a slight stigma, but thankfully not as much as there used to be

Thanks so much for taking the time to educate us all a little bit. Super thankful for the sacrifices you make on a day to day basis. The immersive quality of the film felt very deliberate and so I’m not surprised about the sound aspect of the film. Awareness surrounding mental health is so needed in most professions and so hopefully this gets some conversations going. That super fascinating that they used real frequencies. Just another nod to the director for doing their due diligence. Thanks again for your service and for stopping by!

@@TheMovieMinute-wMichaelAllenyeah, the dispatcher you hear constantly over the radio in between is still working today. They switch between Burroughs so all bases are covered. He runs Brooklyn, Bronx, and queens on a regular. Don’t know his name off the top of my head, but you can never forget the heavy voice

I’m at EMS veteran myself and I was not prepared for how dark this movie was going to be. It brought back a couple of calls from my past that’s for sure. They did a really good job of showing how the job can take a serious mental health toll on a person.. the medicine in the movie was so accurate because the actors spent multiple tours riding along overnight shifts with paramedics in East New York City and going to paramedic school as well. I give them props for all that. I don’t drink anymore and when I walked out of this movie, I felt like I needed to go get a drink. It was just way heavier than I thought it would be, but finally Hollywood got the stress and mental health component on EMS correct

Thanks so much Barry for your service. It truly impacted me deeply as I think about some of these calls that they went on. Is there any support system within the field that exist to help EMTs process these intense situations?

@@TheMovieMinute-wMichaelAllenI know we have CSU over here. I don’t know how good it is because I haven’t used it yet (I have people I can speak to after some of the rough calls, if you get my drift), but I know a couple of people over here that do use them, and it’s been beneficial for them.

Love your review, but just to clarify these are PARAMEDICS, one step above EMTs. Both are incredible. Just wanted to point that out. And yes the sound design was amazing!!!

Great review. Covered a lot of what to expect from the film without spoiling and giving us content warning. I'm excited to check this movie out now cause I love when a movie can show a perspective that I'm not aware of!

Definitely about a monotonous hopeless job, and serving people that do not appreciate you helping them. Mental health and trauma that comes from that line of work.
Or maybe its just because it's New York...

I feel super sad that this is the reality of so many first responders. New York most likely intensifies the experience because of the sheer volume of people living close together

I'm assuming the volume levels are more for the effect of what it might actually be like riding in one of these vehicles.

The mo or was excellent, it was meant to show the true world of EMS and the reality that people do not see, unless they’ve lived it. For those who say they were disappointed by the lack of a plot are missing the point. The experiences of the paramedics and what they go through on a daily basis, is the most realistic view I’ve seen. this coming from a first responder

Some great points! I think I mostly wish there was a little more story development around Sean Penn’s character. But overall it seems the film is resonating deeply with many which is an indication that they did it right

What city doesn't have maximum asphalt. Makes me wonder if someone just liked the title of Asteroid City a little too much.

There should be a warning before this movie. If you aren't the happiest person on earth you shouldn't watch this. I haven't felt so terrible after a movie ended since Million Dollar baby. I would never recommend this to anyone ever. This makes a Serbian Film feel like a comedy.

very outdated way of developing characters, with no nuances, average cinematography. good story but a wasted opportunity for a good movie.
