Peavey Bandit 112 vs Studio Pro 112 (Red Stripe Amps)

  • This is a shootout between the Peavey Bandit 112 and the Peavey Studio Pro 112. I set the amps up very similarly on each amp and you can hear (or should hear) a huge difference between them. That said, they are both really nice to play and are perfect for different gigs or volumes as required. The stock speakers are in both of these Peavey Amps. ‎

Both these amps can sound the same with a few turns on the eq. The bandit has a bassier sound just a bit muffled while The studio pro has more mids which can cut better in a live band setting, either way they both sound awesome.

I enjoy these old videos. You've come a long way in 7 years. Bandit VS Studio Pro 112-- clean Bandit: "Louder at same volume setting." Clean Studio Pro 112: "Depending on where you have the volume, the reverb becomes more prominent." Vintage drive channel Bandit: "Cool!" Vintage drive channel Studio Pro: "Cool!". 😂My first amp was a Peavey Backstage 30. I traded it away 40 years ago. I bought a U.S.A. made Bandit 65W used for $40 based on your Bandit videos. Rock on, Shane.

The Bandit is just a tuff amp to go toe to toe with. It's louder than most twins and sounds as good as an old tube amp, what's not to like. I'm in the US and searching pawn shops almost every day and I see them every month for good prices.

A couple of years ago my wife was at a garage sale where we live in Wisconsin and she called me to join her because there was an amp for sale. It was the Studio Pro 112 that you demo here. It had never been taken out of the guy's basement. His wife told him - "you've got too many amps. You need to get rid of something" and this was the one. I knew nothing about it but bought it ears unheard because I have never had a bad piece of Peavey gear.
I replaced the Blue Marvel with a stock Fender 12" I had and this thing sounds great. With a wonderful clean tone that I use with my Tele and a Boss ME50 for effects. But what really sells this amp is when you put it on the lead channel with no pedal and crank up the "modern" tone. With the Tele it just wails. It sounded so good that when I had a chance to buy an Envoy, which is the same amp with 40 watts and a 10" speaker, I did. I replaced the 10" with an Eminence bass speaker I got off eBay for $25 and this amp is a great little practice or small gig amp.
Did I mention that I bought the Studio Pro 112 for $40?

So check this Shane... awhile ago I found a red stripe Studio Pro 112 thrown away in the trash. Pretty good condition, cosmetically. It turned on but didn't make any sounds. I bypassed the preamp and went direct into the effect return jack. Still no sound. I then realized that speaker was completely dead. My co-worker then gave me a spare Valve King speaker and BAM. It works! Now, tonight I was browsing Offer Up and saw that someone was selling a red stripe Bandit 112 locally for $100! I could not pass this deal up! I snatched that baby up and it's a excellent condition!

I put a eminence legend in mine. The studio pro is the best home and Studio amp I've ever had. I've had a deluxe fender reissue too. I still prefer the cleans from the studio pro redstripe.
Side note: I use the redstripe studiopro in stereo with a silverstripe express(just the silverstripe equivalent of the redstripe studio). These two at small gigs sound super good and big.

I've got the red stripe Trans Tube Bandit 112 . I've had it for about a dozen years. I've also got a Peavey 112sx add on cabinet bumping the Bandit up to 100 watts. I absolutely love this amp. I can wring any tone I want out of it. Thank you for the demo

I bought a Peavey Express 112 new (silver stripe) back in the late 90's and it's been a great amp. Bought and sold lots of other amps since then tube and solid state but never thought about letting that Express go. Just can't beat the clean channel for the $. I'm picking up a used silver stripe Bandit tomorrow. Can't wait.

Damn you Shane! You gave me gas for a Bandit, and apparently, singlehandedly caused prices to spike. It took 2 years, and I had about given up finding a cheap red stripe bandit around here. I just happened to run across one yesterday marked down to $78 US in pretty good shape, and had no choice but to buy it! I changed the speaker out, and so far it sounds really good. It’s the best SS amp I’ve ever owned.
But I really don’t need another amp!

You can usually find SP 112's for $75-100 cheaper than the Bandits and my recommendation is if you can locate a SP in good to excellent condition, buy it. Then replace the speaker and for the same price as the average used Bandit Red Stripers, you'll have a meatier sounding amp with exactly the kind of tone (depending on your speaker preference) you're looking for.

Both amps are of a similar vein, but different enough to be 2 distinct amps. Otherwise WHY make 2 different amps that sound the SAME!
Bandit had way more clarity, and treble response/presence. Studio was more subdued, and muffled but still in a good way.

I've not had a Red stripe yet so that's on my wish list. My current gigging Bandit is a Teal stripe with a 150w Neo speaker out of a DV Mark cab. Not as rounded as the original speaker but my poor old back appreciates the lighter weight.

When you look at the schematics of the amps, they are nearly identical. The small differences are in parts that are not shaping the sound. So I assume the difference is in the speakers, which are different. In fact Peavey has the same service manual for both.

To me the Bandit sounds more open. Like the bigger cabinet lets the 12" speaker breathe more. The Studio Pro sounds a bit more boxy.
So personally I would go with the Bandit. I use a teal stripe version just like the one I had when I started jamming out except this one has the Sheffield speaker not the Scorpion. I want to find one with a Scorpion so I can do a comparison and also to run a stereo rig.
I used to have and would love a Stereo Chorus 212 (Teal Stripe Solo Series) because it sounds even more open like a Twin Reverb (also used to have a '73 silverface) but it is twice as heavy as the Bandit and too much for my bad back and knees to lug around.

I hooked up an old 90's mim Strat tonight that I sometimes plug in to a Champion 20 and it sounded pretty good. As a 69 year old who's played acoustic most of my life I think this is one semi impulse buy I'm gonna enjoy. I went in to a small vintage guitar shop to see if they had a 70's Yamaha FG 75 and came out with the amp. Interesting day.

Studio pro sounds thinner; Bandit produces a fuller, more articulate voice. Red Stripes are great, but there's no denying that Peavey's Bandit may be the best, gnarliest all-purpose SS amp around.

The Bandit sounds more full, closer to a tube amp. Studio just sounds like a thin SS amp.

I owned the Studio Pro years ago. Really didn't like it at all. The Bandit sounds so much better.

The bandit here sounds different from mine. Given, my bandit is a solo series from the 80's haha

I prefer the Bandit - especially on the crunch channel. The studio doesn't have as much character.

I wonder when we we stop evaluating one sound as 'better' than another sound. Its as funny but also uninformative as saying that blue is 'better' than red ;). Just like there is no difference in 'quality' between colors such as blue and red, there is no difference in quality between sounds.
Its a personal preference, that is also highly dependant on context (band or solo, room or stage, style of music, the guitar etc)
I know it is probably more difficult to make content and to attract viewers, but still i think we should stop evaluating sound in inappropriate terms such as 'good' and 'bad' ;)
