@@RegularGuitars I don't know that you'd have to get that loud. The t-dynamic knob is effectively letting you adjust the headroom on the amp--when it starts to brake. So plug into the low input, dial in a little gain, then dial down the t-knob until it compresses but doesn't really break too much. I wonder if you couldn't get a Fender Princeton kind of clean out of it. Maybe turn down the guitar to like 8, or something. It would be finding a balance between guitar output, t-dynamics and gain. Just picked up a Max158 Bass, and this thing is freaky. Unmodified cabinet, but the electronics are a mix of the Max158 as shown in manuals, and apparently/maybe some of the the Rage circuitry and more inputs. Looks like fun!

Did I miss something looks like you had the T-Dynamics at zero for most of the video? By looks I don’t mean on the amp I am referring to the settings you show on the screen.
Crank the bass all the way up and the mods and treble to normal and go from 100% to 10% on the t dynamics and you’ll find out what it does. It’s really just a bass cut on the lead channel.
Really cool review, i bought a rage 158 and a studio pro 60 last year (very cheap) they sound amazing!!! I hope I will get some more peaveys before the next hype starts hahaha.
Tube boutique amps are always better, but for the money bandits are a good option - Peavey distortion always seems to suck and both amps lack warmth, but playing live i would recommend pushing the amp with a high dist quality pedal in the signal chain. Never play peavey distortion live at a gig, just run good pedals over the clean channel.
A better speaker fixes this. I put a Celestion Redback in my Redstripe Bandit. No distortion pedal needed, the lead channel woke up with this speaker. Clearer midrange, celestion crunch, the treble is much warmer and the icepick is gone, sounds closer to a 412 in many ways but with that 112 focus.
@@hartlee1160 hard to tell about the dynamics. They definitely have their own overall sound. The EFX is "woodier" or "rounder" if that makes any sense, the 112 a bit more crystal clear. The EFX is the perfect practice amp for me, but because I use it mostly for that, I hardly ever push the master volume past 4. I'll have to compare them side by side soon.
just bought a used Rage 158 red stripe (Chinese) for $65 CDN, this vid was very informative. thanks! would love to see a similar review for the Rage 158.
I don't think that the TransTube is close to a tube amp. I am an EE and well understand the circuit, in fact you can see the patent for it online. I've played some of them and never felt, that they are worth it. There are really good solid state amps out there, for example the Trademark 60 by Tech 21. But is the Peavey Bandit 112 a bad amp? Not at all.
I always have Peavey gear in various applications, many haters where I came from haha but many compliments as well even by the haters 😆. So these amps are still a little boxy and fizzy sounding and in extreme (loud) conditions aka low tuned metal are just not going to do but put things where they fit. Try running these amps into a nice large sealed cabinet with darker speakers and Surprise! Tell your drummer and bass player with 3000watts and 4x15 cab to relax a bit 🥳. I even have played guitar through TMax bass amps, TKO, old studio Pro 112 (sounds like ass with SuperSat), Reknown, too many to remember the names of them all, Bass, keys, guitars. Had a silver stripe TransTube fail at a gig next to a Peavy Prowler tube amp as a stereo rig. The sound man was quick to address the effects loop and sure enough a few pokes of a cable into the 1/4 jack and away we went on to rock the house. A little cleaning and replacing mains filter caps or noisy fans and the gear just keeps on going !!! I love them, yes I have better gear tone wise but when you want a workhorse that sounds fine and can really dish out reliable performance, the made in USA has been super for me. As for the China stuff I can’t say except some of it is definitely not cool while others are still great, just expect the capacitors and switching power supplies to fail years sooner than the ancient Peaveys from the 80’s if so equipped.
As an owner of a chinese Studio Pro, I can say that the only services I had to do to it were because of a terrible electrical installation on a pub I played and once I gave it to a friend and I still don't know what he did to it but stopped working. It has never failed me once!
03/17/2023: I am interested in the Peavey studio-pro red stripe amp (with logo). They sell for $150.00 dollars. I have two questions: (1) How much does it weigh in pounds? (2) When not playing guitar, do all Peavey amps have a loud humming and buzzing sound in the gain channel?
Hey thx for the history on the amp! There's a guy selling the red stripe with pointy logo for a $100. Is that one as good as the block logo red stripe?
I would totally go for that amp. Check the front panel if it says made in the USA or designed in the USA, that way you will know where it was made. The pointy logo tells me that it's a transition one, so it could be made in the US or overseas. Usually US made and Chinese made transtube series share a lot of components. I have a chinese Studio Pro and it's a killer amp.
Nice demo thanks! Have you tried the transformer 112? It says transtube also but in addition has effects. There's a dude nearby selling one for 100 WITH a footswitch. What do you think?
I haven't tried that one, but as far as it seems, it's like a Studio Pro 112 with a built in DSP with bank selectors, different preamp models and lots of stuff, kinda like the Johnson Millenium was with a built in Digitech 2112 and midi switching capabilities. $100 seems to be a really good price, I've seen some of those on reverb for 300 so my suggestion is to give it a try using the same advice on T Dynamics I give on this video. I think it could be way better than a Line 6 amp from the same era, so it's up to you to check it. If you get it it would be really nice if you upload a video because it's an not that well known amp. Good luck with it!
I have a peavey transformer 112 and 212. I personally find them great sounding and very flexible. I feel that they are very good for practice as well as live use. I play country to Van Halen type rock. The 112 can keep up with a loud drummer. I run it on 2 or 3 with T dynamics around 3-5. With a loud drummer maybe 5 and 5 (and it would most likely be too loud for a gig in a medium venue nowadays). I agree with the author of this video. I feel the tone is superior to the line 6 of the era. Weighs 40 lbs. 100 dollars would be a steal. Especially with the footswitch. The only other pedals I use are a wah and a tuner into the front input. Cheers good luck
You could get your money back on just the foot switch! I have the 112 I bought new back in 2001. I don't use it often but I can't part with it. It has plenty of great sounds as long as you are willing to do the work to set up your presets.
Have you tried the efx line of red stripes?? And the red stripes without t dynamics, is it in there but to a certain percent or is it left out completely???😊
I got a block letters 100 w red stripe. Trying to get a good distortion sound on the clean channel without deafening myself and the neighborhood. Any suggestions?
I've read it on a polish forum a long ago and couldn't find it again. The t dynamics mod involves replacing and removing several caps and resistors and soldering in the pot itself. As far as I remember, just look at the schem and upgrade all the parts left of the filter capacitors to studio pro specs. Then solder in the correct pot where the where it shows the breakaway board is wired in its the same thing minus the LED circuit
@@jazznotes3802 Having a deluxe 5e3 and a champ 5F1 I can tell you that even tube amps don't sound quite well cranked. Transtube emulates a little bit a blackface deluxe, but yes, compression with t dynamics at minimum is a bit too much, but it gives a manageble volume at smaller gigs like pubs
@@RegularGuitars My tube amps sound 1000 times better cranked, but that’s unlikely to happen now with the new pub/club gig noise restrictions here in the UK. The Bandit sound killer at high volume levels, especially for a SS amp. It’s a pub workhorse for sure!
The amp is fine. The speaker doesn't do it for me, but that can be easily fixed with a different one. A Eminence Texas Heat for electric rhythm n blues. A Celestion Greenback for some classic rock or a Celestion Swamp Thang for a fat bottom for heavy metal. Put the money into the kind of speaker that compliments the type of music you play.
Speakers are always a matter of taste, for the tone that I'm looking for, the rebranded eminence speakers are ok, so much that I want one for my 5E3, but those you named are perfectly good options for s speaker swap. Thank you for your comment!
@@redcomn I've checked a service manual, but I'm not an electronics expert, so I'm not sure. You can find service manuals easily online and check. Sadly there's no mention anywhere in which class the power amp operates
It's a quite versatile amp tbh. If you need it to sound really clean, just crank the T dynamics and it wil sound really clean. If you need something like a metal tone, it has some voicings, but it's main strong point is that it's a good pedal platform
I think it's a matter of taste and which speaker suits best the tone in your hands. I have a quite dark tone and jensens in tweeds work perfectly fine for me. Every guitar player is different. I think peavey were always equipped with nice speakers
Peaveys rule. I hope people continue to have the wrong idea about them. Keeps the vintage prices down. On my way to pick up a Studio Pro 112 for $75. Oh yeah.

Did I miss something looks like you had the T-Dynamics at zero for most of the video? By looks I don’t mean on the amp I am referring to the settings you show on the screen.
@@bluwng yes, because it's an attenuator. Just to show how it gets to break up at a manageable volume
Crank the bass all the way up and the mods and treble to normal and go from 100% to 10% on the t dynamics and you’ll find out what it does. It’s really just a bass cut on the lead channel.
Thanks for the video for explaning tdynamic great explanation !
Thanks!
20+ years ago I sold my Studio Pro 112 for peanuts. Didn't know any better... and I still regret it!
I almost did the same mistake trying to get a 15w tube amp 10 years ago. Glad I didn't sell mine
Really cool review, i bought a rage 158 and a studio pro 60 last year (very cheap) they sound amazing!!! I hope I will get some more peaveys before the next hype starts hahaha.
These amps are a well known bang for the buck for a while
Tube boutique amps are always better, but for the money bandits are a good option - Peavey distortion always seems to suck and both amps lack warmth, but playing live i would recommend pushing the amp with a high dist quality pedal in the signal chain. Never play peavey distortion live at a gig, just run good pedals over the clean channel.
Using the clean channel with t dynamics on 10% will give you natural breakup in a deluxe reverb style at halfway volume
Love my 112, and my 258 TransTube EFX. Super great october on it.
Damn autocorrect.... Octaver
Does 112 sound just like the efx??
and since the 258 doesn't have the tdynamics knob...is it set in the amp at a certain percent or is it left out of the 258 amp sound completely?.l
I recently bought peavey express 112 from my uncle and was looking for some tutorial to t. Dynamics. Thanks
I hope it was useful because these amps sound killer!
just bought a used Rage 158 red stripe (Chinese) for $65 CDN, this vid was very informative. thanks! would love to see a similar review for the Rage 158.
I would have to source one of those, the rage is a really good practice amp for bedroom purposes, but it sounds really good!
It weights around 33 pounds. The one I got only hums with extreme gain settings, it's a quite silent amp
I swear that everytime I hear a guy with this accent I learn a lot lmao
Funny thing is that I'm not a native english speaker lol
Ty for great video
Glad you liked it! Thanks for the comment!
Splendid demo and very informative! Is this 65 or 80 watt version?🎸🎼🎵🎶👀👍🏾👍🏽
This one in particular is the 65w one, thank you for your feedback!
@@RegularGuitars Yeah it says designed in the USA. The speaker has no label on it. Should I still pull the trigger for a 100? 🤔
My goal is to chop it into a sexy light portable head since I have a few homemade cabs (112 and 212's). 😎
@@CarlitoM77 These amps are really easy to disassemble. I reccomend to build a smal cabinet to converting it to a head.
Might be one of the Chinese manufactured ones, but they are still just fine. Have played a few.
I avoid those efx amps. they showup for sale way too often.
I got a block letters 100 w red stripe. Trying to get a good distortion sound on the clean channel without deafening myself and the neighborhood. Any suggestions?
Try putting the T Dynamics on 0 and crank it to taste, usually these amps start to breakup halfway up in volume
Do you have information regarding the T. Dynamics mod for the Envoy 110?
I've read it on a polish forum a long ago and couldn't find it again. The t dynamics mod involves replacing and removing several caps and resistors and soldering in the pot itself. As far as I remember, just look at the schem and upgrade all the parts left of the filter capacitors to studio pro specs. Then solder in the correct pot where the where it shows the breakaway board is wired in its the same thing minus the LED circuit
Dynamics all the way 🆙 for awesome tone (not down)
Surely you get a cleaner tone that way, but if you want some power amp overdrive and compression, the best way to do it is to turn it down
@@RegularGuitars Not when you have the volume all the way up 🙂. This thing sounds awesome cranked, unlike every other SS amp I’ve owned.
@@jazznotes3802 It depends on the amp, the speakers, a lot of factors.
Low volume is not the best on the bandit because of the size of the speaker
Yo do you think you could do Doom with it crankeD? it got really fuzzy and started to fart out almost like an old Matamp
It could, but I would suggest setting up the amp to the edge of breakup and using a fuzz pedal to push it
Maybe Big Muff or a Rat could easily do the trick
Early 90s ?! . way before that
What date do you think it originates from?
The latest version has a different t dynamics.. you mean its better to set tge T dynamics to 0
Yes, for better response at lower volumes
All i wanna know is this amp class ab?
It's a solid state amp
@@RegularGuitars not sure how this will answer me tho.
Solid state can be class ab. It's not just tube amp specific tho.
@@redcomn I've checked a service manual, but I'm not an electronics expert, so I'm not sure. You can find service manuals easily online and check. Sadly there's no mention anywhere in which class the power amp operates
Yecchh!
It’s ok if ya like classic rock? Otherwise, nope.. sticking with mg Laney combo amp
It's a quite versatile amp tbh. If you need it to sound really clean, just crank the T dynamics and it wil sound really clean. If you need something like a metal tone, it has some voicings, but it's main strong point is that it's a good pedal platform
No way, it has a great thrash tone too! That's the reason I have a Transtube!
None sound as good as the blue Stripe Sheffield
I think it's a matter of taste and which speaker suits best the tone in your hands. I have a quite dark tone and jensens in tweeds work perfectly fine for me. Every guitar player is different. I think peavey were always equipped with nice speakers
I like that sticker on the paul bro.
Thank you! It's gone since a year now because the bigsby completely covers it
Peaveys rule. I hope people continue to have the wrong idea about them. Keeps the vintage prices down. On my way to pick up a Studio Pro 112 for $75. Oh yeah.
The ones that claim this amp sounds great have no experience with great sounding tube amps. My experience, not all tube amps sound great, only a few. Maybe the Bandit can close to a shitty tube amp.
Dear god, clean this amp. Its dirty like fffffff and looks nasty. Rust on reverb tank... Dear god...
I've already cleaned it, my city has quite high humidity levels during the whole year
Nope, dosen't compare with my fender blues junior.
It's closer to the Deluxe Reverb, but as close as a solid state amp can get
@Regular Guitars I have a couple nice old peavey amps, I wouldn't sell them. I did buy a Hot Rodded Blues Junior Red Nova, hands down that is the finest sounding amp ever, they only made about 400 of this limited edition, if you ever find one buy it, truly it will be the greatest amp you ever got your hands on. I have gone through a ton of amps , and still own at least a dozen good ones. I'm just telling you for your own information , if by chance you locate one, BUY IT. It will blow your mind.
cant understand you !
