Astonished that you haven't included Dunkirk. An amazing achievement by Christopher Nolan, who yet again has produced an intelligent blockbuster which is stunning to look at, evocative and an amazing portrayal of that event (with a soundtrack to match). Having watched the DvD extras was even more astonished to realise that it was done virtually entirely in camera, using a mixture of lots of extras, real planes and ships with a few traditional film practical effects rather than lots of CGI, which accounts in part for its amazing feeling of reality.
Foebane72 Lol thanks for clarifying. On a technical level it's really good, but Nolan doesn't seem to know how to make the audience question things without using really forced, contrived dialogue
I might have to rewatch it. I thought it was okay and the music was clever but it felt too long and the concept stretched a bit too far. Wouldn't be in my top ten of the year but I've changed my opinion on a rewatch before..
YES!!! I loved raw. I don’t usually enjoy horror films, but the metaphors, performances and disturbing nature blew me away. Shocked that Dunkirk wasn’t on the list (I though British film critics were contractually obligated to love everything Nolan) but I am so glad he mentioned raw.
My list (based on Chicago release dates): Honorable mentions: The Disaster Artist, My Life as a Zucchini, The Blackcoat's Daughter, Personal Shopper, Graduation - 10 - The Beguiled - 9 - 20th Century Women - 8 - T2 Trainspotting - 7 - The Florida Project - 6 - Lady Bird - 5 - Get Out - 4 - A Ghost Story - 3 - Ingrid Goes West - 2 - The Killing of a Sacred Deer - 1 - mother!
For me, the best films of 2017 will probably be films that I will only be able to see in 2018: Especially Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri, The Shape of Water (!) and The Phantom Thread. So far my favourites are The Red Turtle, Lady Macbeth and The Killing of a sacred deer.
I am so looking forward to these three, too. But in my country those won't be released until late january/february. Also Lynne Ramsays new movie You were never really here looks very promising. I feel like 2018 is gonna be a good year.
Struggled with The Red Turtle. Visuals didn't grip me, pacing was a problem. Might give it another go. Baby Driver was the standout for me. Really great.

The two films that I enjoyed most in 2017 were Transporting 2 and The Other Side of Hope. Mark gave both films enthusiastic reviews earlier in the year and I'm a bit surprised that neither of them are in the top 10. I guess he sees an awful lot of good and bad films over the year but I'm wondering if these were forgotten gems as they were early in the year. Anyway I'd recommend them both for anyone that has not seen them yet and see Marks reviews first as they are on here.
My top ten: 1- Blade Runner 2049 2- My Life As a Courgette 3- Logan 4- Call Me By Your Name 5- Elle 6- The Red Turtle 7- Baby Driver 8- The Killing of a Sacred Deer 9- Raw 10- Better Watch Out
Star Wars was my number 1 by a mile. A real cinematic masterpiece that made go through every emotion. All those 5-1 films are sensational too along with as you say about 50 other films this year. A fantastic year for cinema, fantastic.
Bearing in mind that I live in a town that isn't well catered to much arthouse, My Top 10 films of 2017... 1. Bladerunner 2049 2. Baby driver 3. War for the Planet of the apes 4. Guardians of the galaxy vol.2 5. Moonlight 6. IT 7. Paddington 2 8. Ghost Story 9. Dunkirk 10. Mother! (Just cause never seen anything like it and for the few gasps and groans of those in the screening. It's a divisive and testing movie and thankful it graced the multiplex)
I quite enjoyed Moonlight. I don't know if it was the best film of this year, but it certainly was better than La La Land and deserved the win, out of the competing films. I still need to watch Raw because I'm a bad person or something lol
10. The Shape of Water9. Baby Driver8. The Square7. The Kiling of a Sacred Deer6. Lean on Pete5. Loveless4. Blade Runner 2049 3. Call Me By Your Name2. Happy End1. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
Join us for the next episode of Kermode uncut wherein Mark bashes his audience round the face with a copy of Fouccault's History of Sexuality (all joking aside, great list, keep on keeping on Mark)
My favourite movies of 2017 1. Blade runner 2049 2. Dunkirk 3. Logan 4. War for the planet of the apes 5. Star Wars the last Jedi 6. IT 7. John wick chapter 2 8. The LEGO Batman movie 9. The disaster artist 10. Baby driver
Paddington 2 and Blade Runner 2049 made it to Dorset, and were watched, and enjoyed. That's 2 more films than last years Kermodes top ten films (that don't make it out of the cities)
I also have to add, once or twice when I have taken Mark's recommendations on some weird indy thing... not always a great watch. Still find him a very informative and entertaining critic though.
Honorable Mentions: Born In China, The Lego Batman Movie, A Quiet Passion, Life, Thank You For Your Service, Beauty And The Beast, Split, It Comes At Night, Baby Driver, Ingrid Goes West, American Made, Marshall, Last Flag Flying, The Florida Project, Wonderstruck, Darkest Hour, Novitiate, Lady Macbeth, Only The Brave, Lady Bird, It, Get Out, The Zookeeper’s Wife, Alien: Covenant, Battle Of The Sexes 1. Blade Runner 2049 12. Brigsby Bear 13. The Big Sick 14. The Disaster Artist 15. A United Kingdom
Almost everyone who I know who's seen Moonlight including myself liked it but thought it was wildly overrated by critics.I felt the same about Dunkirk(in the minority there) but find it surprising Mark left it off his list after his hugely positive review
Mark P140 exactly the same with me. I really enjoyed Dunkirk, but I didn't love it, or got lost in it quite as much as I wanted. there were bits in it I loved but I didn't love it. I think I have the same problem with all his movies- in a weird way perhaps they're too note perfect.? maybe that's why the one people criticised: interstellar is the one I thought whilst flawed I just loved it anyway
My Top 10 Fresh Fruit of 2017 1. Mudbound2. The Disaster Artist3. Logan4. War of the Planet of the Apes5. Coco6. IT7. Star Wars: The Last Jedi8. Baby Driver9. Get Out10. Wow, even if you didn't like Raw, I don't understand how "dull" could be an accurate description of the film. It could be criticized for a plethora of reasons, but dull is definitely not one of them lol.
10. The Love Witch 09. Baby Driver 08. The Disaster Artist 07. mother! 06. T2 Trainspotting 05. Free Fire 04. Colossal 03. The Shape of Water 02. Blade Runner 2049 01. Good Time
Love everything you do Mark, a truly great list of films........ But surely Dunkirk deserved to be mentioned....... Not judging as I say I love all the reviews and such that you do and looking forward to a new year of reviews 😊
Yeah that's why he doesn't have films like Call Me By Your Name or The Shape of Water or others like them on the lkst. They don't come out in the UK until January or February there.
Here’s my top 5 in reverse order 5 Get Out a wonderful horror movie about social control and ethics 4 Raw a back to basics cannibal social drama 3 shape of water saw it abroad great from a good director. 2 blade runner 2049 a sequel to my favourite movie and apart from a few moments that annoyed me it was a good attempt 1. Dunkirk a masterpiece a silent film that didn’t need unnecessary dialogue it had every summed up in a look or a glance it took cinema back being universal and told a human story. Mark shared a dvd review where the person said that it’s lack of humanity showed on dvd I disagree it showed the best of humanity on dvd
Sam Hall oh I wasn’t slamming Mark or who wrote the piece I just disagree with it. I know people who didn’t care for it, that’s fine it’s opinion. Again this is marks list which i dont always agree with the fact the disaster artist wasn’t in there or a Netflix peppery isn’t in there. It’s his list, not mine
Sam Hall Well i probably haven’t seen half of what Mark has (red turtle, moonlight, life is a courgette, levelling) all those haven’t seen. So it’s unfair to his list is wrong. As I can’t judge. However if the films I did see my list reflects the best I saw.
red turtle is a film difficult to not like, but I thought it shot itself in the foot by having such a conventional story arc. it felt cliched and almost sappy. I wouldve liked something a bit darker or more surreal.
I know opinions and all... BUT! Disgraceful lack of the Handmaiden. I've seen more than half of the movies on this list and I found none of them to even come close. Just on sheer technical proficiency it's the better film. I do know, as well as respect (to a degree), Mark likes to put on films that are "important" but with that in mind the Handmaiden should be on there as well as it's a beautiful critique of the male gaze.
Fine if not very surprising list - except for Raw, which I didn't like. Felt it had a lot of problems with its tone, often on the edge of being unintentionally funny. Didn't quite work for me as a coming of age drama and even less as a horror film. I'd add "A monster calls" and "The killing of a sacred deer".
Oh hi Mark! Have an amazing 2018.
“Marks top 10 isn’t my top 10 so therefore he’s automatically pretentious”

I much prefer your top 10. Though no room for Dunkirk?
Afraid not. I did enjoy it but not enough for a place in the top 10. I should have included it in the 'honourable mentions' though.
Great to see love for A Ghost Story, my number 1 of the year.
Yeah, Wind River was good!
WOW! I can't imagine disagreeing with any list on the internet more than this one
Raw was absolutely mesmerising, great choice.

I love all four parts of this list, Mark. You make the rest of us look shabby in our scholarship.
I just watched Raw.....This is god like film making
What I love the most about Mark list is that every year there's a couple of hidden gems that don't get enough recognition outside the UK
Great list! Here's mine:
10. The Shape of Water
9. Star Wars The Last Jedi
8. The Florida Project
7. Baby Driver
6. War for the Planet of the Apes
5. A Ghost Story

Just watched The Levelling, what an incredible movie, cheers for the heads up Mark!
Astonished that you haven't included Dunkirk. An amazing achievement by Christopher Nolan, who yet again has produced an intelligent blockbuster which is stunning to look at, evocative and an amazing portrayal of that event (with a soundtrack to match). Stuart Orme I thought it was brilliant until the characters started talking. Felt way too forced
Foebane72 Me?
Foebane72 Lol thanks for clarifying. On a technical level it's really good, but Nolan doesn't seem to know how to make the audience question things without using really forced, contrived dialogue
Probably the most I've agreed with a list of yours for years. Raw is EXEMPLARY
Woah raw was fab.
My top 5:
Mother!
T2 Trainspotting
The Disaster Artist
Call Me By Your Name
Moonlight.
RealProblemShuckers Not enough love for T2 Trainspotting! It's still my favorite of the year.

100% agree with number 1. I hope more people see it
Love that Raw was #1. Didn't expect it to feature on the list at all. Really great movie.
RAW was very good. It was a cool twist on the idea of cannibalism.
Moonlight was definitely the best film of last awards seaon. They got it so right. One of those few films that are a 10/10.
You probably don´t understand the craft when it comes to cinema. Maybe it´s that. It was just perfect.
Struggled with The Red Turtle. Visuals didn't grip me, pacing was a problem. Might give it another go.
Baby Driver was the standout for me. Really great.
Yep, LOVED RAw!!!
Just need to catch up on some of Mark's other top films of 2017
Call Me By Your Name not even featuring? 🤔
jaket282 I saw it at my local independent cinema a month ago, is it getting a staggered release?
The UK and Ireland were the first countries it got released in, came out back in October.
jaket282 nope it came out months ago
came out back in October and he didnt watch it so not in the list
Kermode said he liked it, but not as much as everyone else seems to.
‘Call Me By Your Name’? Anyone? I haven’t seen any response to this film from Mark which is really disappointing.
Douglas Moone That muppet just embarrasses himself in public by ignoring this masterpiece.
I want to see his face after CMBYN gets Globes and Oscars for best picture and actor.

I haven't seen The Red Turtle yet but it is on Amazon Prime and I'll stream it soon.
Interesting you didn't pick Dunkirk, would have been in my 10-6 list at least!
Yaaaas, Kermode and I share the same film of the year!!!
Really surprised not to see “Call you by your name” even make the list
why does his face always look like its being suspended upside down?
My top ten:
1- Blade Runner 2049
2- My Life As a Courgette
3- Logan
4- Call Me By Your Name
5- Elle

Phantom Thread should be number 1 for everyone's list. I think it'll be his top 2018 pick right?
Raw is fantastic, also in my top 10... although not on #1. That would be Mother!
Gotta say,my favourite film of the year is baby driver. Superb.
The only film I went out of my way to see because of this list is the Red Turtle.
Fantastic

I also have to add, once or twice when I have taken Mark's recommendations on some weird indy thing... not always a great watch.
Still find him a very informative and entertaining critic though.
The Red Turtle is perhaps the most inclusive film I've ever seen
Post your favorite pictures of the year please on the last video you said you made a list with like 36 films please 🙏
The ending to The Florida Project really let the film down for me. Was so great until then.
Completely agree. What also let the film down for me a bit was that at times the kids were nothing but unlikeable brats.
Woooooahh no mention for Baby Driver!?!?!
I am surprised he left Dunkirk and Baby Driver off the list because he loved both movies.
But like he said the list could of been up to 30 for him.
No place for Killing Of A Sacred Deer, Call Me By Your Name or The Party?
You didn't include Footloose.
Considering how much he likes baby driver I'm surprised he left it off his list

Only seen 3 of the top 10/11. What have I been doing with myself?
No Dunkirk?
Personal opinions, I preferred Get Out to Raw, I preferred Your Name to Red Turtle, and I Preferred Baby Driver to almost all of them.
Your Name came out in 2016 here in the UK, i think it was pretty high on his top 10 last year
Did Baby Driver get overlooked because of the whole Kevin Spacey thing?
Oh, maybe. I didn't consider that.
Almost everyone who I know who's seen Moonlight including myself liked it but thought it was wildly overrated by critics.I felt the same about Dunkirk(in the minority there) but find it surprising Mark left it off his list after his hugely positive review

Love the Florida Project.
Cannot agree with those but it’s your choice.
The Levelling is a masterpiece. So glad Mark gives it the appreciation it deserves.
Totally agree, stunning performances, incredibly moving.
I’d maybe add in Baby Driver somewhere in that list!?
Moonlight was my #1 of 2016 but I found Raw incredibly dull.
Wow, even if you didn't like Raw, I don't understand how "dull" could be an accurate description of the film. It could be criticized for a plethora of reasons, but dull is definitely not one of them lol.
"I don't understand'
Good List.
Don't agree with you, but still a good list

It was a great movie year.
CMBYN should have been no. 1 in 2017 and 2018.
What about Handmaiden?
didnt he have these movies in a different list??
Love everything you do Mark, a truly great list of films........ But surely Dunkirk deserved to be mentioned....... Not judging as I say I love all the reviews and such that you do and looking forward to a new year of reviews 😊
Raw TOWERS over Get Out... Good choice... but... No Dunkirk in your list?
Surprised to find that Dunkirk didn't make the Top 10.
Wait a minute, Moonlight was last year? Did it have a different release date in the UK?
29AndreG yeah in the UK it didn’t come out until the begging of this year
Yeah that's why he doesn't have films like Call Me By Your Name or The Shape of Water or others like them on the lkst. They don't come out in the UK until January or February there.
Noah Anderson CMBYN came out in October in the UK, before America oddly enough
Surprising - I liked Raw but thought Get Out was better.
Disappointed that God's Own Country didn't appear in his top 10. Comfortably one of the best films this year
Here’s my top 5 in reverse order
5 Get Out a wonderful horror movie about social control and ethics
4 Raw a back to basics cannibal social drama
3 shape of water saw it abroad great from a good director.
2 blade runner 2049 a sequel to my favourite movie and apart from a few moments that annoyed me it was a good attempt
Why isn't 'The Love Witch' in your top ten, Dr K...? Tut!
Only seen one out of the bunch.
excellent choice for number 1.
Didn't see that coming. Where is The Death of Stalin?
I know opinions and all...
BUT!
Disgraceful lack of the Handmaiden. I've seen more than half of the movies on this list and I found none of them to even come close. Just on sheer technical proficiency it's the better film. I do know, as well as respect (to a degree), Mark likes to put on films that are "important" but with that in mind the Handmaiden should be on there as well as it's a beautiful critique of the male gaze.
No Ladybird? :(
Shame 'Call Me By Your Name' is missing
He didn’t drink the Kool-Aid the others seem to of. A pretentious, garbage film
I didn't drink the Kool Aid and it was the best film of the year for me, by a long shot!
No Dunkirk then?
Fine if not very surprising list - except for Raw, which I didn't like. Felt it had a lot of problems with its tone, often on the edge of being unintentionally funny. Didn't quite work for me as a coming of age drama and even less as a horror film.
I'd add "A monster calls" and "The killing of a sacred deer".
Modern what??? Argay? Im curious...anyone know ? (Re first film)
I guess he didn't see Wind River or The Big Sick.
