+William “Willie” Adderholdt You two had never heard of Room? Then you don't pay attention to movies very much. Brie Larson won best actress for it and was the prohibitive favorite to win the award well before the Oscars were handed out
Room is one of my favourite films ever. To those complaining about Mark's choice of obscure movies - why not use this as an opportunity to discover fantastic movies?
My Top 10 Films released in the UK so far this year: 1. High-Rise 2. The Neon Demon 3. Son of Saul 4. When Marnie Was There 5. Captain America: Civil War 6. The Big Short 7. Love & Friendship 8. Spotlight 9. Room 10. Deadpool Obviously there's loads I still need to see (including quite a few of Mark's list).
Buy these films on DVD/BluRay/itunes/rent etc if you havent seen them. They need/deserve the support. Theres enough crappy films that do better than they should.
I called it - as soon as Son of Saul was number 2, I thought the only thing that could possibly top it was Embrace of the Serpent. We completely agree Mr Kermode!
I can't lie, I know Mark hates it because he can't put aside his own attitudes but god damn it did I love Everybody wants some, I've been waiting twenty years for a film that entertained and uplifted me as much as Dazed and Confused and Linklater finally gave it to me...possibly as an apology for Boyhood...."it took 12 years"
Matt Allen I can't really argue against that at this point, only time will tell if it stands up with his great movies (meaning the ones that aren't boyhood)
Jamie Cant Yeah, just a joyous viewing experience, packed cinema laughing hard at pretty much every joke, thats a very special experience to be part of.
Without being sycophantic this is why Mark is my film critic, and the treat for me is I have not seen 3 of those films. Which is a point I want to make, personally, I feel Hollywood has died a death, it just seems to be one superhero, flim-flam film after another. The real quality cinema is in "world cinema", but I never seem to hear about the gems, of the five films mentioned above, I have only seen 2, Room and Son of Saul (brilliant).
Gibboanx 10 10. Star Trek Beyond 9. The Jungle Book 8. Spotlight 7. The Nice Guys 6. Room 5. The Hateful Eight 4. Bone Tomahawk 3. Creed 2. Deadpool 1. The Revenant
My favorites of the year so far, based on what's being released in 2016 in the United States. Note that Room came out last October in the US. 1 - The Neon Demon 2 - Deadpool 3 - Anomalisa 4 - The Handmaiden 5 - The Blackcoat's Daughter 6 - Weiner 7 - The Witch 8 - 10 Cloverfield Lane 9 - The Invitation 10 - Krisha
My top 10 of the year: 10. Victoria 9. Hardcore Henry 8. 10 Cloverfield Lane 7. Spotlight 6. Anomalisa 5. Room 4. Captain America: Civil War 3. Creed 2. The Witch 1. Son of Saul
its because that oscar list represents some of the best films made across the entire planet that year. by comparison any list of english movies is watered down. There is a massive amount of talent in film making normally hidden from the english speaking world.
It really makes me feel like the films nominated for Best Foreign Film should also be nominated for Best Picture more often than they are. It's not that rare that the best movie released in a year doesn't come from America. Likewise, I don't think the films from Best Animated Picture are nominated for Best Picture nearly as often as they should be. And When Marnie Was There could have easily been nominated for Best Foreign Film also. Maybe it's just an excuse to include more films in the ceremony, but it often feels to me that the foreign and animated films are being given a consolation prize.
Honorable Mentions: A Hologram For The King, Midnight Special, Finding Dory, Race, Hello, My Name Is Doris, Money Monster, Hail, Caesar!, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, The Nice Guys Top 10 Best Films Of 2016 So Far: 1. The Witch 2. Eye In The Sky 3. The Jungle Book 4. Captain Fantastic 5. Zootopia 6. Love & Friendship 7. Knight Of Cups 8. 10 Cloverfield Lane 9. Florence Foster Jenkins 10. Everybody Wants Some!!
I always consider myself to have quite refined taste in movies, then every year i watch a Kermode: Best Films video and instantly feel like an imbecile.
He's a film critic who sees practically EVERY FILM that is released. He's not going to list the top 10 most popular films of the year. Many of the best films released don't have the highest advertising budgets or widest releases, unfortunately.
The only one I have not seen is the #10, all the rest are pretty incredible, I can't find myself taking one of them away to put another one to be honest.
I didn't catch High Rise or When Marnie Was There, I'll need to see them ASAP.I'm surprised Son of Saul wasn't your number one choice. I thought it was a brutal, truly affecting film and was astonished that it was made by a first time filmmaker.
RedSoulYo yes especially this year, since the standard tends to rise around about Autumn time when the "Oscar movies" get released, I'm really worried that the absolute work of art that is When Marnie Was There won't make the list
I hate it when people immediately dismiss films they haven't heard of before. Just because Mark hasn't included a superhero film, it does not mean that his list has no merit. (The exception of this being The Room, since that got a mainstream release. But still a good film). It's because Mark is one of the few people who bother to find films to watch outside of the current top ten charts. So he has expanded his mind beyond your typical Hollywood productions. I only hope this list can encourage people to seek out some of these films. There is more to cinema then Superhero films and whatever else Hollywood cash grabbers dish out.
Mostly suprised that Mark didn't even mention The Witch, which i thought was brilliant. But of the three movies i've seen on Mark's list, they are also very good :)
I always feel like the worst films list is all the movies I have seen and liked and the best are ones I hadn't seen or heard of but so glad Room is up there. With all the exciting action packed movies I found that the mid-point of the film was the most exciting moment I had witnessed on film this year.

It isn't really worth listening to film critics because they base their critiques on what they like, It is for each of us to make our own minds up, not for someone else to make it up for us.
For once I can agree that hist #1 pick is one of the best of the year - Embrace of the Serpent is a very good film and the kind of film I'd watch again and again. I've yet to see Son of Saul or Evolution yet (been meaning to see both since I first caught wind of them) but I did enjoy both Mustang and Room. High-Rise I may need to watch again (I didn't love it), and the same for Tale of Tales (a little too thin on the ground despite being visually amazing).
My own Top 10 so far (as it stands): 10. The Hateful Eight 9. Queen of Earth 8. Embrace of the Serpent 7. The Witch 6. Everybody Wants Some!! 5. Cemetery of Splendour 4. Time Out of Mind 3. The Assassin 2. Spotlight 1. Midnight Special Runners-up: Anomalisa, The Nice Guys, Dheepan, Hail Caesar!, Mustang, Hitchcock/Truffaut, Room, Experimenter, Louder Than Bombs, Green Room Still to see (in particular): A War, Rams, The Survivalist, James White, The Pearl Button, Court, The Club, Disorder, I Am Belfast, Our Little Sister, Arabian Nights Vol. I-III, Son of Saul, Heaven Knows What, Evolution, Journey to the Shore, Where to Invade Next, Right Now Wrong Then, Remainder, The Neon Demon, Star Trek Beyond, Chevalier, The BFG, Finding Dory, Jason Bourne, Born to Be Blue, The Commune

I do wish Mr Kermode could find the time to watch/critique the occasional tv series. I wonder if a show like Stranger Things would manage to break into the top 10.
Stranger Things is certainly en vogue at the moment; it is just so damn likable. You have to be the fervent of contrarians to not enjoy the show. There are many tv shows that I would like him to review. TV is going through a similar golden age to that of animation.
A lot of these films look really good. But quite a few seem very intense, dramatic, emotional pieces. That's certainly one type of film. I must say though, I expected a little more... I don't know. Fun, in his top 10. A film that you watch, start to smile, and don't stop all the way throughout.
I think it was similar to Colonia, the Emma Watson film, in that it only played cinemas long enough to qualify as a cinema film. Funnily enough, Colonia is playing at cinemas over here now on wider release than in the UK. Victoria was special for me in that it reminded me of my time in Germany (Köln and Frankfurt rather than Berlin for me) and while the exercise of the whole 2h18m film being a single shot was well done it wasn't the whole of the film, which would have made it less interesting...
I actually really liked the acting and story more than the one take, but like I said, probably because it resonated with me so much (not that I've robbed a bank at gunpoint...)
Absolutely loved Little Sister and the Witch. Gutted that neither are mentioned! I didnt enjoy When Marie was here half as much as many other Studio Ghibli films - animation was top notch as usual, but I found the world far less magical and intriguing than many of their other films.
Let's be honest, very few people are going to see most of these movies. The market for foreign language movies in the UK has nosedived, and foreign filmmakers have resorted to making their films in English, which is a pity. Often, even in London, you have to hunt down foreign language movies, as in almost all cases they will not be playing in your local multiplex.
I don't have a full top ten, and am desperate to see quite a few on Kermode's list including Tale of Tales. My face of the year so far though are The Revenant, Midnight Special, The Nice Guys, and Green Room I think.
Tale of Tales is at its best as a visual spectacle. As a story (or collection of stories) it doesn't work so well, I think. We went to see it in March or April and I was ready to love it, but came away unimpressed. It reminded me of the Tarsem Singh film The Fall, which backed up amazing visuals with a great story.
I know I'm going to get hate for this, and I know what everyone is already going to say. "Mark is going by UK release dates." I know that, but when I saw this list I just can't help but sigh. Most of these movies are not 2016 films, they're 2014 and 2015 films. And I just can't help but feel sad that casts & crews that worked on movies released this year can't get a spot for their damn release date just because a film from a previous year steals a spot because of a limited release screening. I mean I didn't see Citizen Kane until 2012, does that mean Citizen Kane is the best movie of 2012. No it doesn't that is just when I was able to see the movie. A film's initial release date should take precedence and priority because that is when the crew and studio decide to release the film. When I decide to see the film is a different thing entirely. Yeah I know people can't place the film if they hasn't seen it, but that goes to show that people should make their best effort to see these movies first and then make their best of the year list. I don't know or something else, I'm just sad that a 2016 best film list just barely has any movies from 2016. And there have been plenty: Green Room, Hail Caesar, zootopia, The Nice Guys, Neon Demon. But no they have to lose out to films that came out in 2015 & 2014.
So, none of the ten best films showed at any cinema within 50 miles of me. I suppose I should be grateful we live in the download generation so I can seek these films out, but it's such a shame not to see them on the big screen as intended. On an even sadder note, I'm betting my local Movie House showed all ten of the worst of the year so far.
son of saul was good, but i can't help feel Mark is slightly over egging the overwhelming and powerful effect it has on the viewer, needing weeks to process it etc
Summary of Mark's list every year: If you haven't seen it then it's on his best list, if you have it's on his worst.
Speak for yourself.
+William “Willie” Adderholdt You two had never heard of Room? Then you don't pay attention to movies very much. Brie Larson won best actress for it and was the prohibitive favorite to win the award well before the Oscars were handed out
When Marnie Was There is still in a few cinemas now, and the list contains a bunch of Oscar winners and nominees. They really aren't that obscure
I've seen every one of these films except for Mustang.
+William “Willie” Adderholdt You've not heard of Oscar winning "Room" that was promoted everywhere?
Room is one of my favourite films ever. To those complaining about Mark's choice of obscure movies - why not use this as an opportunity to discover fantastic movies?
I thought Room was average at best.
Okay :)
My Top 10 Films released in the UK so far this year:
1. High-Rise
2. The Neon Demon
3. Son of Saul
4. When Marnie Was There
5. Captain America: Civil War
6. The Big Short
7. Love & Friendship
8. Spotlight
9. Room
10. Deadpool
Obviously there's loads I still need to see (including quite a few of Mark's list).
As a Colombian, this makes me SO happy.
Buy these films on DVD/BluRay/itunes/rent etc if you havent seen them. They need/deserve the support. Theres enough crappy films that do better than they should.
Embrace of the Serpent was so so so good
God Son of Saul was good. The long, claustrophobic shots. Dirty and grimy and extremely tense. Loved it.
I called it - as soon as Son of Saul was number 2, I thought the only thing that could possibly top it was Embrace of the Serpent. We completely agree Mr Kermode!
'Sonof Saul' & 'Mustang' we're both Excellent!x
I was really suprised that The VVitch wasnt no1
It was amazing, like Babadook last year. Are we seeing a revival of the horror genre?
It's my #1.
Green Room was my favourite, so glad to see it get an honourable mention, but great list as always Mark.
I'm sad Sing Street didn't make the cut. Brilliant film.
I can't lie, I know Mark hates it because he can't put aside his own attitudes but god damn it did I love Everybody wants some, I've been waiting twenty years for a film that entertained and uplifted me as much as Dazed and Confused and Linklater finally gave it to me...possibly as an apology for Boyhood...."it took 12 years"
steve cheevers We'll have to agree to differ on Boyhood, I can't take another argument about it.....Today
Everybody Wants Some was great as an easy watch but definitely not even close to Linklaters best work. Dazed and Confused is a masterpiece however!
Matt Allen I can't really argue against that at this point, only time will tell if it stands up with his great movies (meaning the ones that aren't boyhood)
Everybody wants some!! was fantastic in my opinion. One of most entertaining movies of the year so far.
Jamie Cant Yeah, just a joyous viewing experience, packed cinema laughing hard at pretty much every joke, thats a very special experience to be part of.
Embrace of the Serpent is incredible! My favourite of the year so far, too.
Without being sycophantic this is why Mark is my film critic, and the treat for me is I have not seen 3 of those films.

My favorites of the year so far, based on what's being released in 2016 in the United States. Note that Room came out last October in the US.
1 - The Neon Demon

4 - The Handmaiden
5 - The Blackcoat's Daughter
6 - Weiner
7 - The Witch
8 - 10 Cloverfield Lane
9 - The Invitation
10 - Krisha
I'm surprised that The Witch isn't in Mark's list given how much he enjoyed it
Notes on Blindness was incredible...and then i breathed a sigh of relief at why it was, i thought, it had been omitted.
3:33 _Room_ was so emotionally powerful and riveting.
My top 10 of the year:
10. Victoria

7. Spotlight

5. Room
4. Captain America: Civil War

I like how 3 of your top 4 films were nominated for an Oscar for best foreign film.
its because that oscar list represents some of the best films made across the entire planet that year. by comparison any list of english movies is watered down. There is a massive amount of talent in film making normally hidden from the english speaking world.

I still haven't seen a more enjoyable movie than The Nice Guys this year to be honest. I just love that film
So glad When Marnie Was There made the list!
I always consider myself to have quite refined taste in movies, then every year i watch a Kermode: Best Films video and instantly feel like an imbecile.

I nodded off during Embrace of the Serpent. Glad Mark enjoyed it.
Studio Ghibli just released The Red Turtle, their first non-Japanese production, and it's wonderful. So they're not dead yet.
I haven't seen any of the top ten yet. Got some gems to catch up on, these all look good
I didn't catch High Rise or When Marnie Was There, I'll need to see them ASAP.I'm surprised Son of Saul wasn't your number one choice. I thought it was a brutal, truly affecting film and was astonished that it was made by a first time filmmaker.
wow. Embrace of the serpent was great. I highly recommend everyone to watch it first with no subtitles!
Should be named "The Five Best Foreign Language Films Where Some Require Subtitles To Know What's Going On Of The Year So Far"
Mark, you HAVE to make the best list at least 20 movies long this year, or else SO many truly stellar films won't stand a chance
Agreed. Limiting, or in some years extending, the top film list to ten is not enough.
RedSoulYo yes especially this year, since the standard tends to rise around about Autumn time when the "Oscar movies" get released, I'm really worried that the absolute work of art that is When Marnie Was There won't make the list

No Finding Dory ! No Secret Life of Pets ! No Jungle Book ! what's up with this list ?
+TheAuthorsFiles That's because Shaun the Sheep was released last year in the UK
maybe those were seen after june.
TheAuthorsFiles I don't know why your comment has plus 3 because Shaun the Sheep doesn't even qualify for his list!
Have you seen Theeb yet, Mark? 3 of the 5 foreign language oscar nominees feature here- I know it came out in 2015, but definitely worth a look!
Could not agree more I saw it at the ICA last year and it was such a powerful experience
Can't believe Sing Street didn't make it in to the top 10, thought that was a slam dunk!
I don't know why, but Kermode strikes me as being the most likely identity of the mystery man in the Pulp Fiction gimp suit.
wondering if The Wailing will find its way onto the list
Mostly suprised that Mark didn't even mention The Witch, which i thought was brilliant. But of the three movies i've seen on Mark's list, they are also very good :)
I always feel like the worst films list is all the movies I have seen and liked and the best are ones I hadn't seen or heard of but so glad Room is up there. With all the exciting action packed movies I found that the mid-point of the film was the most exciting moment I had witnessed on film this year.
I just couldn't with High Rise, even with Hiddleston, Miller & its social commentary.
I agree, I appreciated it as a piece of art but just couldn't get into it really, it kinda went over my head
Sing Street is my top 1, closely followed by When Marnie was There, Civil War and Ghostbusters :)
My twenty (because 10 isn't enough):
20 LOVE & FRIENDSHIP
19 GREEN ROOM
18 ONE NIGHT IN 2012
17 SPOTLIGHT
16 EYE IN THE SKY
15 HEAVEN KNOWS WHAT
14 THE BIG SHORT
13 BONE TOMAHAWK
12 MIDNIGHT SPECIAL

9 CHICKEN
8 WHEN MARNIE WAS THERE
7 ROOM
6 SON OF SAUL
5 THE NICE GUYS
4 SING STREET
3 THE WITCH
2 ANOMALISA
1 TALE OF TALES
I wonder if Mark has seen Bone Tomahawk - seems like something he would consider for his top 10 due to his likes in the past. And it's pretty great!
No Sing Street? Such a shame.
Was waiting for it to be number 1. felt disappointed when he revealed it. not even in the 10
Great selection, and nice to see new videos filmed inside hal´s 9000 brain room.
It isn't really worth listening to film critics because they base their critiques on what they like, It is for each of us to make our own minds up, not for someone else to make it up for us.
Surprised Sing Street didn't make it in. But it has been a great year so far
For once I can agree that hist #1 pick is one of the best of the year - Embrace of the Serpent is a very good film and the kind of film I'd watch again and again. 7. The Witch

5. Cemetery of Splendour
4. Time Out of Mind
3. The Assassin
2. Spotlight
1. Midnight Special
Runners-up: Anomalisa, The Nice Guys, Dheepan, Hail Caesar!, Mustang, Hitchcock/Truffaut, Room, Experimenter, Louder Than Bombs, Green Room
Still to see (in particular): A War, Rams, The Survivalist, James White, The Pearl Button, Court, The Club, Disorder, I Am Belfast, Our Little Sister, Arabian Nights Vol.
Hardly any of these films were shown at my local cinema
Clear cache guys for the video to work. If you dont know how to clear cache google it, it depends which browser you use its different menu to clear the cache (Firefox, Chrome, Opera etc). After that close and restart your browser.
Well i just did that and saw the video. Maybe you need to close and restart your browser.
I did do a headstand also. So try that also.
Room easily tops my list for this year so far, but I haven't seen Marks top 2.
I do wish Mr Kermode could find the time to watch/critique the occasional tv series. I wonder if a show like Stranger Things would manage to break into the top 10.
Stranger Things is in my top ten movies of the year. I don't care if it's a TV show.

There are many tv shows that I would like him to review. TV is going through a similar golden age to that of animation.
dnwilliams - I've heard from a few people regard the Stranger Things as a film.
It's a TV show, not a movie. Big difference.
+Alex Meyer oh really? Tell me more
Embrace of the Serpent is excellent
El Abrazo de la Serpiente is indeed a masterpiece
green room was a tough watch but I want to see Saulnier make a Rom com or something next. I think the impact of his style may wear thin
was expecting Hail Caesar
The most underrated film of the year in my opinion.
I've still not seen it, but Mark mentions it a lot on the show.
Hateful 8, Finding Dory, Deadpool, Cival War, Zootopia
thanks youtube. Part one is 'up next'. RUclips can be so annoying. Back shortly
A lot of these films look really good.
But quite a few seem very intense, dramatic, emotional pieces.
That's certainly one type of film.
I must say though, I expected a little more... I don't know. Fun, in his top 10. A film that you watch, start to smile, and don't stop all the way throughout.
film can be fun - but that doesn't necessarily make them good films.
I love Room!!!
If Kermode had seen Kizumonogatari Part I: Tekketsu-hen, I bet it would be on this list.
Mark, Mark Mark... how could you forget The Witch?
Where Mark is reminds me of the insides of the HAL9000
Saw Embrace of the Serpent recently - a very very good film, IMO
I really enjoyed Tale of Tales, and I LOVED Mustang, what a film! ^_^
P.S.: Most of these films are from last year though.
You have a very interesting list
Only seen Room and Love and Friendship from your Top 10. Have to say, don't fancy any of the others!
If Son of Saul fully deserved the Oscar , why name Embrace of the Serpent (nominee) the best film of the year?
Saw 8 out of the 10 movies in the Netherlands via Cineville membership, did not see Fan and Tale of Tales.
Disappointed not to see Victoria in this list. I was my favourite film of 2015, but only came out on a limited release in the UK this year.
it was also my favourite, as you say, don't think many folk got to see it here in the UK, fantastic film experience
I think it was similar to Colonia, the Emma Watson film, in that it only played cinemas long enough to qualify as a cinema film. Funnily enough, Colonia is playing at cinemas over here now on wider release than in the UK. I actually really liked the acting and story more than the one take, but like I said, probably because it resonated with me so much (not that I've robbed a bank at gunpoint...)
Son of Saul was incredible.
Mustang looks GOOD! I just saw some nymphs in what appeared to be underwear!
Absolutely loved Little Sister and the Witch. Gutted that neither are mentioned! I didnt enjoy When Marie was here half as much as many other Studio Ghibli films - animation was top notch as usual, but I found the world far less magical and intriguing than many of their other films.
I'd like to get the podcast of this but an eight-minute episode is half a gig... ah well, RUclips it is then.
Can someone send me a link to that instrumental version of SOS from High-Rise? The only one I was able to find is the one by Portishead.
Seconded I've been searching for this
Yes, it is also played in this video from 0:18 to 0:25
the top 4 films are partly about being held
I guess Notes on Blindness came out past the cutoff point- was sure that would be on here, if not #1.
so glad when marnie was there was in ur top 10 (i would have put it farther up the list myself though)
was soooo expecting room to be number 1!! Wow!!
When Marnie Was There was great, but I'd go as far to say its a disservice to Studio Ghibli to say its one of there best.
Room is my film of the decade

+Ben Vost yeah, I really like The Fall and am hoping its in the same vein
It is, but not as good (for me).
What, no Deadpool?!
It's really not.
I know I'm going to get hate for this, and I know what everyone is already going to say.
"Mark is going by UK release dates."
I know that, but when I saw this list I just can't help but sigh.
I know this is a 2016 so far list but i gotta know Mark.
I know 'room' is great but is it better than 'the room' ?
What a story Mark
Oh hi mark
Most of your best films have no shooting or explosions.
Where was my LOBSTER?
So, none of the ten best films showed at any cinema within 50 miles of me. I suppose I should be grateful we live in the download generation so I can seek these films out, but it's such a shame not to see them on the big screen as intended. On an even sadder note, I'm betting my local Movie House showed all ten of the worst of the year so far.
Is Kermode wearing a t-shirt with a grinder on it?
son of saul was good, but i can't help feel Mark is slightly over egging the overwhelming and powerful effect it has on the viewer, needing weeks to process it etc
Room was released in 2015...or am I missing something here?
Jan 2016 in the UK. Mark is essentially treating YT as an extension of his output for Brits.
Room wasn't released in the UK until January 2016
How depressing your list is.......YAWN YAWN Kermode!
High Life!
Only your list has this many European/Asian movies. Most other lists are actually top Hollywood release.
And the award for most pretentious list of all time goes to...
The only one I'd consider watching is High Rise, the rest look a bit bleak.
