I'm far from a fan of ROG but nobody can deny he had a helll of a sweet right peg. I'm only surprised he didn't finish out his career with a stint at Man. Utd - what with his habit of snatching victory from defeat with the clock in the red 😊😆
I never considered O'Gara that much of a player while he was playing. But After his retirement, watching back, he was a hecking World class player and he doesn't get that much credit apart of some niches I'd say. So good on you for bringing him to the spotlight
Thank you for this video. As a South African I've noticed that somebody out there doesn't quite like Ronan O'Gara. Sure, he made mistakes. Who hasn't. All I can say is that I wish I was half the player he was!!!
There is a terrible divide in Irish provinces. Leinster still believe that only that can play rugby in Ireland. Despite the fact that Irish rugby only really hit the world stage after the Munster lads were capped. Even after both have retired, there are still Leinster boys and the media bitching about ROG and trying to suggest that Sexton is the greatest 10 in history. Same crap going on now. Crowley is our obvious 10 but he is wearing the wrong club shirt so the media is pushing Prendergast - who is a good player- as the next great hope for Irish rugby.
Best ever at kicking crossfield to the corner. If there was a inch of space between an opposition winger and the touchline he would consistently judge it perfectly.
I don’t think someone watched a lot of rog he was never like a huge hitter but u can’t say he didn’t tackle defensively he was solid not amazing but not that bad
Outside my house in Cork there's a pitch where Ronan's dad would bring him as a teenager to practice his kicking. I'm a few years younger than Ronan so I collected the balls for him quite a lot and tried to emulate what he was doing.
Blimey, it’s saddens me how the greats of my era have grown old and had to step aside for the new generation. Realisation that even the most exceptionally gifted can’t outrun Father Time...but the memories these sporting greats have given us over the years will live on with us forever. I give thanks to each and everyone of them🙏☺️
In Rugby 08, R. O'Gara doesn't miss💚, Dan Carter, doesn't miss 🖤, Percy Montgomery, doesn't miss 💚, Johnny Wilkinson, doesn't miss 🤍, Gavin Henson, doesn't miss ♥️, Carlos Spencer, doesn't miss 🖤 - LEGENDARY!!!
It's a lot easier to be one of the greatest out halves ever when you have one of the greatest scrum halves ever feeding you. Stringer in his prime was outstanding.
I have never been a fan of Rugby before but after watching the sheer skill of this irish legend Ryan O Gara. Makes me proud to be Irish and now have tremendous respect for the sport. Legend ROG. Sean
He never had a running ability and the prospect of tackling to him was worse than losing to Leinster, but frankly, WHO GIVES A SHIT! He’s a top three all time no.10 in my book.
Nah it’s a simple debate Wilkinson was a better player but ROG had a more consistent and more reliable boot than Johnny (don’t get me wrong Wilkinson was a hell of a kicker) As a Munster man I would say Wilkinson is the better out half but I would never swap him for ROG🐐🐐
@@samconnolly3601 Surely Wilkinson was a better placekicker with ROG being a better tactical kicker, possibly the best ever at controlling the game by kicking into touch and gaining territory.
Not a perfect player but he’d be the last to claim he was. Put his balls on the line for Munster and Ireland, for good and bad, and gave me a lot of memories I’ll never forget. Hope he wins the lot as a coach.
The good auld days, winning, losing and the drama to boot, pun intended. Don’t know if it’s age or nostalgia but rugby seems a bit too sterile these days. Maybe it’s just a golden era for Irish rugby ending and we have Farrell ball 🎳 to look forward to.
@wildebest didn't like my own comment but will like it now so there is two. Blaming him for world cups is not reasonable. He is the top scorer in the Six nations which is the international stage. Came clutch for munster with two european cups. As for it being an own goal thats a bad analogy, he was going for the win not a tied series and messed up the catch, shit happens especially when you are concussed.
Wilkinson is the drop goal king. Doesn't matter how many attempts, he holds the record for most scored and he managed to freely score them more than anyone else. ROG scored some great winners but there's doing it at the death to win a crucial game and there's doing it to keep the points ticking over and take the game away. ROG did the former. Wilko could do the former and the latter. His DG against Saracens for Toulon was a classic example, as his kicking had taken the game completely away from them and the ease with which he banged the DG over took all the remaining wind out of Saracens
I forgot that making a mistake in a rugby game meant you were undeserving of a tribute, guess I'll delete any player tribute I've ever made seeing as there's no pro rugby player I can think of who's not made a mistake...
@@AndrewDavidForde not so fast Andrew. There are numerous reasons, as an SA supporter, for categorising O' Gara as a turnip and you included one of those at 2.20ish when he scored a try against SA.Honiss had instructed Smit to tell the Boks to stop dicking around when this giant turnip sneaked into score a try like a weasel. I guess Smit never contemplated that this turnip would behave like an Englishman. Too bad that Aussie centre never punched him harder in 2011. To be fair he was a pretty decent flyhalf.
mark willies both of us might be a bit biased (you’re from SA I’m from Munster) but really the referee should’ve called that back, he was playing what he saw and that was a wide open space - what should’ve happened I admit is that Smit laughs and calls it back ROG is a Munster legend that put everything into his club and country
Is he though? I know he's scored a lot of drop goals but that's mainly because he attempted so many. In terms of significance, I'd argue that O'Gara is more so - just look at Wales '03, Argentina '04, Wales '09, Northampton '11, Castres '11 to win the game. All of these attempts were a single attempt in the last minute and would have cost them the game had O'Gara missed. Whereas with Wilkinson, the only significant drop goal as such was '03, where he'd already missed three drop goals in the same game...
Andrew Forde What about the one he scored against saracens or the two he dropped in a semi final against france just because they aren’t match winners doesn’t mean they weren’t on the highest stage of rugby
@@ahdhhren204 I never at any point said Wilkinson didn't score drop goals at the highest stage of rugby. But had those drop goals you mentioned not been scored, his team still would have won the match - and more significantly so Wilkinson wasn't under anywhere near the same amount of pressure for those kicks as O'Gara was for the drop goals that I mentioned.
Andrew Forde I usually agree with you on most occasions, but Wilkinson’s WC winning drop goal trumps any of Ronan “gifted the game to the bokks” o’gara.
@@newspaper9949 And that's completely fair enough, I agree that Wilkinson's drop goal in '03 was probably one of the most significant drop goals in Rugby history, with Sexton's vs. France also up there, but in my opinion, I believe O'Gara's ability to nail his only drop goal attempt of the match from 40m out in a do or die situation trumps Wilkinson's drop goal record. It's a completely subjective matter (that can never truly be proven) and I'm sure someone else will argue that there's another fly-half who's much better. But, I don't think him conceding the penalty against the Boks in '09 negates his drop-kicking abilities. We're all entitled to an opinion but as the video creator my opinion is always going to bear some sort of reflection on the video title, nature of the video etc, so apologies for that!
Over rated. Lost more close and important games than he won. Blown out the way in a simple tackle by Luke McAllister V All Blacks, his brain freeze and then blown out the way V south Africa in a lion's Jersey. Defensively inept. Had a decent boot, Sexton should've replaced him years before he did.
Yes and no. ROG lasted over a decade in Test Rugby because he had no replacement until Sexton came out. But it was a time where rugby was different. Fly-halves were supposed to do just their job, and ROG was a master at doing that.
