His son’s comment”you’re still the best, dad” will be what Sexton is remembered for. A great competitor, he has brought Ireland’s rugby standards up to the stratosphere. Rugby is growing fast in Ireland, and future is bright.

Gonna be honest . I seriously think ireland need more Irish players . Or at least a connection . I loved Sexton and Biggar saying that because they hated losing. . Not lover of O.Gara being honest but Sexton was reliable as F**k . Not having a dig about SH players in team, BUT as with British lions, who now have too many non UK , Ire qualified , never even stepping foot in country until first cap . Its getting out of band , especially where players revert back to own country. Ben Te'o always springs to mind here.. Samoan , played rugby league for NZ. Ireland offered him chance to get Irish caps in union. Poses in Irish shirt. Then plays for England. .then lions.. Surely the lions have to draw a line about how many SH players can tour..not going to be recognisable as British lions b4 long and who can really get behind a team where 6 or more are Maoris or Afrikaan etc..woulxnt mind if African named o hara etc . Not picking on Ireland. Every nation

Thanks for this Andrew, the greatest Irish player of all time bar none - and I say that with the greatest of respect to O’Driscoll. Any doubters, I welcome you to refute this evidence:
    - 1 World Rugby Player of the Year (2018) and another 2 nominations (2014 and 2022)
    - A previously unheard of 83% winning record as Ireland captain (25 wins from 30 tests, the next highest in professional era is O’Connell with 64%)
    - 4 Six Nations titles (2 GS including one as captain)
    - Series wins in NZ (2022), Aus (2018), and Argentina (2014)
    - Ireland’s highest ever points scorer (with fewer caps than O’Gara)
    - 6 tests for the B&I Lions (including 5 test starts, compared to 0 test starts for O’Gara)
    - 4 Heineken Cups
    - 6 URCs (or previous incarnation)
    - 1 European Challange Cup (2013)
    - Could tackle (unlike O’Gara)

Sexton had a better Team around him than O'driscoll.
Those accolades are brilliant but for me it's BOD by some distance too.
My reason is BOD is arguably the greatest centre the game has ever seen. Where as I wouldn't put Sexton anywhere near top 5 and not even top ten. Ireland's greatest 10 though

Ireland had a wonderful run of fly halves - David Humphries, Ronan O'Gara... But Sexton was something else. World player of the year for a reason. His goalkicking was brilliant, strangely effective running style, strong leadership, great passing. Everything Ireland needed in their fly half.
As an Englishman i loved being able to watch him for the Lions in 13 and 17. Very sad to see him retire.

Some player, and some man...: I was recently speaking to a guy who coached Special Needs rugby up in Dublin, Johhny's local area, he told me that Johhny and Luke Fitzgerald were the two players who showed up to virtually every one of their games in support. World cup would have been the icing on the cake but they went out fighting to an unbelievable team. Maybe not as talented as BOD or ROG but his longevity was unreal.
