Everyone has been saying either "suicide by cop" or "excessive force," but you explained it can be both at the same time and went over all the psychological dynamics involved, which aren't obvious to the average person. This is one of your best videos.

I read in an another news article that Jayland's fiance had a really bad car accident. She was the driver and had no seat belt. She was ejected from the car onto the hwy. There were 3 other occupants in the car and they were wearing seat belts. The Fiance's car was hit from behind by an 18 wheeler and it is not believed to be her fault. Two motorists who saw the accident stopped along the shoulder and intended to retrieve the fiance's body from the road and render first aid. Another 18 wheeler ran straight over this woman and did not stop. They are still trying to find a way to locate that truck. The other family members saw the whole thing unfold and were horrified. Jayland was not at the scene.
Jayland's family said that he was devastated and began to exhibit negative emotions and symptoms of depression. Jayland's family was worried about him. The family members said they were having a difficult time getting Jayland to speak with them about the tragedy. One family member said that the "laughing, clowning, happy Jayland simply disappeared."
Jayland was working for Door Dash at the time and his family speculated he had the weapon because he could be robbed.
The fact that Jayland left his wedding ring on the seat of the car and exited the car wearing a hoodie and ski mask may indicate he needed to escalate the situation to complete his suicide by cop.
It would seem he tried to end his life this way the night before and it did not go to plan. The cop discontinued the pursuit. So Jayland had to set things up again the next night.
It would help everyone in the community if they would allow the facts to come forth and see that Jayland may have wanted to die this way.
In the future, other investigations involving excessive force by law enforcement should not be undermined or receive less attention because this case was not fully explored.
Anyone who intends to commit suicide by cop with a high speed chase coupled with discharging a firearm has to ask themselves what may happen to others who have nothing to do with the situation. There could be a fatal car collision or perhaps a stray bullet inflicted on others who had nothing to do with the situation. I feel terrible for Jayland. An 18 wheeler truck ran over his fiancee's body in the middle of the road and kept going. To Jayland, the love of his life was killed like a dog. His rage built up and he lost control of himself.
The fiancee's family commented that law enforcement hasn't done enough to locate that 18 wheeler truck, but law enforcement came back and said they are actively working the case. This might be a clue into Jayland's state of mind.

Suicide by cop. I've been suicidal and in group therapy with other suicidal people, and unfortunately I have a lot of experience with losing loved ones to suicide. Most people don't realize how often suicidal people consider the option of suicide by cop, especially males. And it's not to make cops look bad. I've never heard anyone talk about this aspect of suicide by cop. It's a desperate thought process where people aren't quite sure how to assure their own deaths, but really want to achieve that goal. The conversation usually ends up at the point of "well I wouldn't be able to chicken out". Because a lot of people put guns to their head and can't find the nerve to pull the trigger. Then, believe it or not, they start feeling even worse about themselves, with the thoughts like, "I'm such a failure, I can't even do this right." Of course, I don't know, but I have a strong suspicion, this man tried to shoot himself several times over the loss of his fiance, but just couldn't do it. then saw the opportunity of suicide by cop. He was probably building up his courage when he slowed down, and also when he turned and looked back then started running again. Psyching himself up to stop, turn, and reach for his waistline. I doubt it had anything to do with the cops themselves. In his dark reality of grief, they didn't exactly even exist to him. The only thing that existed of them were the bullets he anticipated in their guns. His thoughts were of deep grief, loss, and pain and he was desperate to stop it. It's a testament to how awful our mental health care, and our police forces are in this country.

This looks like it could be a case of target fixation. During WWII gunners on ships would keep firing at an enemy plane that was already blown apart and on fire. Even though the plane was already destroyed and coming down in flames they would continue shooting at it. It happens because people get highly fixated on a target while it is an active threat. Then even after the threat no longer exists they can't turn off their defensive response. It probably has to do with the adrenaline rush during a deadly situation.

Sort of unbiased. I'd say his review of the police is overall sound, but it's dangerous for a person w a professional degree to make a broad assumption about the emotional state of the man who died. I certainly agree w other parts - except to assume he was "manipulating" others by his death. Yikes. It does seem the police didn't want to shoot - refreshing. I agree wholeheartedly w Dr Grande's philosophy on selection of police officers. Tho these officers certainly acted to avoid shooting initially, it's understandable there were protests due to the significant imbalance in our society at this time. I do wish more people, in authority positions, would calm down and discuss issues - I imagine Dr Grande as a mediator.

The suspect did not have to try to make the police look bad; all too often the police accomplish this on their own. And just as when citizens peacefully protest and a small minority become destructive/violent triggering a pack mentality in the crowd, the police all too often seem to be in chronic pack mentality mode when dealing with the public, even when engaged in non-violent interactions with the public. Police often escalate rather than deescalate situations. Law enforcement personnel should be held to a higher standard of accountability than the average citizen rather than the other way around which, unfortunately, has become the norm in our upside down society. When police release body-cam video to the public (which is a tiny fraction of the amount of video evidence of their interactions with the public) it is to make themselves look good. Search youtube and other social media platforms and you will see approximately 99 out of a hundred videos show police to be the perpetrators.

I feel some parts of this analysis are stretching things to an absurd level of implausibility. It is hard to believe Jayland Walker intentionally baited the police with a non-functioning license plate light. It could be just that he panicked when police flagged him down and made a series of irrational moves. If he did in fact bait the police, he executed his plan brilliantly, with a odds-defying amount of success, having snagged 8 to 13 officers in his trap. I have not seen any reports of this sort of brilliance in his past - and so it is hard to believe he had a master plan to do this.

I think Jayland could have been feeling suicidal with no regard for anyone or anything else. He was driving around with what appeared to be a wedding band as well as a loaded handgun. He was probably severely depressed and despondent. He evaded police once and attempted to do it a second time. I don’t believe he wanted to kill the police because he exited his vehicle without his weapon. When he fired his weapon from his moving vehicle he may have even shot straight out the window rather than backward toward the police behind him, to show police he was armed and dangerous. His gestures of pulling a gun out of his waistband were to provoke suicide by cop, just like you said. It does make sense based on his actions. I doubt he did this hoping to start riots against the police. I believe he had one thought in mind and that was to relieve his anguish and pain at the loss of his soon-to-be bride. Maybe he just wanted to die, perhaps to be with his fiancé. He may have been driving around contemplating just that for days, but was unable to follow through by his own hand. The police shooting him so many times even after he fell was overkill. In any event, it is tragic and sad.
