Cass Elliot is the one who had that hard to define quality, plus, of course, voice to emerge from The Mamas and Papas as a big star. She's the one who could headline solo shows and was invited to sing on national shows like Andy Williams, Smothers Brothers, and Carol Burnett.

The Mamas & the Papas were a great folk rock group in the 60's. I had their records. They were known for their smooth harmonies. They had lots of great hits such as "Monday, Monday", "Dedicated To The One I Love", "Words Of Love", "Dancing In The Street", "Look Through My Window", "Creeque Alley", "Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)", "Safe In My Garden", "I Saw Her Again" etc. Mama Cass Elliot went solo & had a big hit with "Dream A Little Dream Of Me".

As a 69-year-old Londoner, this, perfectly, epitomizes California in the 1960s and even 1970s and beyond.
An age of freedom, adventure, exploration, and love. My best holiday was 7 weeks in 1979 that I spent in North America, starting in California and going up and across Canada to returning near Niagara Falls to THe East Coast and flying home from New York. The 11-hour flight from London to Los Angeles(LAX) was £59 :)
How I wish I could reach out and return there in THAT era....:)

Mama Cass was an influential person in US rock history. She helped organize the Monterey Pop festival which introduced Jimi Hendrix N Janis Joplin to the mass markets. She suggested Crosby Still and Nash get together at one of her parties in Laurel Canyon. A shaker and mover.

Oh wow, the stories about this group. All the brilliance and madness of the sixties encapsulated in four part harmony. Spectacular song writing, amazing vocals, superstar session musicians, sex, drugs and folk rock. Jealousy, passion and unrequited love. How many of the stories are true? All we have now are the recordings, and that's a lot. And a quote from Cass Elliot, who listened to a recorded studio track and commented, "I wish we sounded that good". That it all fell apart is less surprising than that it ever came together in the first place, but it did, and it was legendary

Great song, one of many from those days. I'm 80 now, I used to listen to all the music of those days from radio Luxembourg, a pirate radio music ship off the French coast, I believe. I was in Liverpool then. It always amazes me today, to see so many young people liking so much music from those early days, and liking what they hear. Young people today, missed so much in the way of good, clear music, where we could understand every word. Time goes so fast, and looking back, it seems like only yesterday, and this I suppose, is why I'm always surprised that so many of todays youth don't know these artists, which is only to be expected.

Thanks Phillip and for the comment, 80 … so you have the experience and knowledge that one day we can only hope to get :) yes it’s really interesting 🤔 to look back through and open up the music that was true music, I was watching Noel Gallagher on the pedal show and he was saying that even just 20-30 years ago there was hardly many about and music was music, these days everything is so digitally produced that it’s not the same as the old classics :) I only got a vinyl player last week so looking forward to picking some up somewhere :) cheers for the comment and hope you subscribed 👍🏻👍🏻

Barry McGuire recorded the song originally, and the Mamas and the Papas were the backup singers to the song.
Without Barry knowing, the studio had the Mamas and the Papas come back into the studio and re-record the main vocal track and released the song as theirs.
If you listen to Barry's version, you can hear the Mamas and the Papas as the backup singers.

The members of The Mamas and the Papas met in San Francisco as 2 separate groups. Then, they moved to Los Angeles.
Late John Phillips wrote the song San Francisco (about my hometown 🌉. I was not born when that song and California Dreaming were released.)
Michelle Phillips is the only surviving member. She is the mother of Chynna Phillips, who is the lead singer of Wilson Phillips. The other singers are Carney and Wendy Wilson, daughters of Brian Wilson, founder and main writer of The Beach Boys.
    Brief family 👪 history.
Chynna Phillips is 1 of the younger half-sisters of actress MacKenzie, who was in the TV 📺 comedy One Day at a Time, which co-starring actress Valerie Bertinilli, first wife of late Eddie van Halen, RIP. Chynna Phillips is the wife of William Baldwin, who is the uncle of Hayley, who is married to Justin Bieber, who is the son-in-law of Alec Baldwin, father of Hayley. Alec is the oldest brother of the Baldwin family 👪 and ex-husband of actress Kim Basinger, mother of Hayley.

Interesting how Denny, in addition to the physical similarities, he also gave his best Lennonisms vocally here ( 2:13 and 2:21 ). Funny also that Mama Cass at this time actually had a crush on Lennon. One night Lennon got invited over to their current residence, Cass had already went to bed, oblivious of the fact that John was on his way. When he got there they sneaked him in her door and then he laid down in her bed to surprise her👍

and from an episode of scooby doo, i forgot the name of it but its the one where scooby and the gang meet up with famous people to solve a mystery and mama cass was on an episode. this was obviously in the 70s and not any of the new scooby doo BS they have.

I was a teenybopper on the beach of S. California when this came out, and I wondered, why dream of California, when this is where it's all happening. Love their unique harmonies and songs. Angelina Jordan has a killer cover of this song - very different. Cheers!

Have you ever reacted to The Band and the Staples doing The Weight? It's awesome! Spectacular! Joyful! You can see it as performed in the movie clip from The Last Waltz. I love Mamas and Papas but The Weight with the Band and the Staples is a work of art

Guys, great reaction. It’s an iconic song of the 60’s and one of many brilliant The Wrecking Crew masterpieces. I was little when this came out but as a NYC kid I was CA dreaming’ too. And that’s where I went in the 70’s, still here.
How about some UK lads of the 70’s and 80’s Nick and Dave and Rockpile. Teacher, Teacher is awesome and a Nick lead. Crawling From The Wreckage is a Dave lead equally awesome. Like Lennon/McCartney the lead singer tends to be the writer. Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds. Nick is pure pop for now people and Dave would be Rockabilly.

Definitely a required song if there were ever a 60’s soundtrack. Great vocal harmonies by the 4 of them and the instruments by none other than The Wrecking Crew (of course). This and “I saw her again” probably my favorites. In the song “I saw her again”, I always wondered why they didn’t fix that clear recording error on the last chorus when Denny starts in, a measure too soon, stops and then picks it up again, on time, in the right spot. The song wouldn’t sound the same without it though now.
It was always kind of a sour spoiler, learning years later about John’s grotesque infidelities with his and Michele’s daughter. To use the vernacular of the time; “What a drag. A real bummer, man.”

Her solo career (1969-1974), was far too short.
