  • In this video I break down step by step what order I sand in before I polish. Not sure I could explain it any more in depth than what I have in this video. Of course all the sandpaper we use is available on goshineon.com/shop and is specifically designed for aluminum and stainless. I truly hope all these videos help and hope to see you again soon for the next video. Thanks for watching.

    I agree with the comment at 5:25, sanding is the higher skill level, which I still have not yet complety conquered.

    So many great tips on your channel! 🙌
    Like, I never knew to only sand to 600 for metal! 😮 (I only have experience w car paint/clear coat)
    Btw… I wanna start over and perfect those big SS hex nuts I talked about before. All 6 hex sides still have some dings/pits after I bastard-filed them by hand. I want them perfect tho!
    I recently bought a new high rpm Dewalt drill (2800rpm, 7amp), 5/8-11 arbor adapter, 36grit flap disc (just in case) and also 5” backing pad w a bunch of assorted sanding discs (one kit is 80-600grit and other kit is 320-2000… both kits are alum oxide).
    I’ve wanted a Makita/Dewalt rotary polisher for the longest time… but, I don’t polish my car often (like once-twice per decade lol). And they’re like $200, I can’t justify nor afford it. That’s why I got the drill instead (imo, it’s a more versatile tool for the seldom-DiYer/hobbyist, and it’s replacing my 40year old drill anyways, lol.)
    Anyways… my question is… what grit should I start with to remove those pits/dings on 316 SS??
    If you want a visual, it’s in my latest ‘7” record stabilizer/weight’ video (about halfway thru video @19:00, I show it after I filed it by hand). You can still see pits and imperfections on the hex nut.
    What grit to start with the Raw nut on the left? (say if I wanted to smooth more of them for people)
    And, what grit to start with the nut I already filed down on the right?
    Any help appreciated!!🙏

      Paint and raw metal are definitely two different beasts. Paint is very soft and needs finer attention. Whereas metal needs a more aggressive approach. On stainless that is rough I start at 80 grit and work my way up. But you will lose a lot of material getting all those pits out.

      @@EvanStegerMetalPolishing Thanks! I guess I'll try 80grit this weekend! If it's too weak, then I'll try the 36grit flap disc I got.

    I love your videos I've learned a lot keep up the great work. Have a question for you... I've been doing some Polish in about 5 or 6 years mostly just a truck I drive. Got a new kenworth about 10 months ago the tanks if not had anything done to them yet was wondering if I should sand with 406 100 or just cut and color.. It's a brand new truck a 2020.

    • @EvanStegerMetalPolishing
      @EvanStegerMetalPolishing  4 года назад +2

      Sometimes they need sanded. Sometimes they don't. I usually polis one spot. If it polishes easy then I just polish. If it doesn't then I sand. I try to avoid sanding unless I have to.

  • @romerock1957

    600 grit you refer to is P600 (FEPA ) or US 600 (CAMI)?

    • @EvanStegerMetalPolishing
      @EvanStegerMetalPolishing  3 года назад

      Both are common standards but as stated in the video it doesn't mean much to me. The brand of the paper and how they grade it means more to me than the Standard by which they are held to because the grading system has no checks and balances. You can grab 6 different companies with grade p600 and they will all be different levels of hardness and coarseness. The 600 grit I use is p600 but not FEPA or CAMI graded.
