I am 77 and still dig out and maintain a ditch by hand as it’s my side of hedge. This drains road so I clear the grups but tractors and cars run onto the verge and crush them. I did them six weeks ago and yesterday had to ease them again. Please stay off the verges it hard for an old man. Don’t get any thanks from the community either I have to flag them down when I am doing it.

I watched all the way through as usual Olly. Not a farmer (can't even successfully grow spuds in the garden) so obviously don't really know what the NFU lady is on about. But I do feel the government has an agenda to destroy British farming in order to meet their completely ridiculous (and ultimately meaningless) 'net zero' targets. The EA having made Dredging so Difficult they now call it De Silting to try to Circumnavigate their own Rules. I spent 14 Months in Somerset Dredging and doing remedial works after the Floods on the Somerset Levels and I have to say Most EA employees are terrified of their own shadow frightened to make a decision and more interested in preserving their job and pension to worry about what is happening out in the real world and it is Easier not to do anything.

It’s the same with the roads being full of potholes now. My village used to have a couple of men whose sole job was to maintain the roads in the parish. I assume most parishes would have the same. Then they were done away with, contracts for road maintenance were put out to tender, the cheapest quote getting the job whereupon nothing gets done properly. The county council now have a fancy wancy website for reporting potholes yet still nothing gets done properly

Hi Olly as a retired Land Drainage Contractor you are exactly right in everything you say the ditches and brooks are not maintained and that is the main problem. When I drained a field the Ministry would inspect it was done correctly. Farmers would get a 60% grant towards the cost but that has long gone. Also the other problem the likes of Wrexham Industrial Estate imagine how many millions of litres come off that during a heavy storm which all has to go somewhere.

Think Ollys comment on the maintenance of rivers are bang on! And to me, that straight ditch he was driving along side looks totally man made, so the human intervention has already happened. Not to mention all the other human interventions around it and the other fields he has shown flooded recently, such as major roads, railways etc. To propose that everyone simply downs tools and lets nature take its course is to deny the fact that the countryside we exist in is hugely imrpoved and influence by human activity. It is total ideological folly to leave things to 'nature', these things need to continue to be managed intelligently, using human ingenuity, that same ingenuity that turned our nation from a natural, but impoverished land, to a efficient, fetile and productive land that has brought such riches to ourselves and the wider world

It occurs to me that in protecting the drain and river habitat they are risking loosing other protected habitats by flooding as well as allowing the flooding to cause other on told damage. I was hoping they had learnt a lesson on the Somerset Levels when that flooded because the drains were SO silted up !!! Sadly not. A cynic would say they are hiding behind the ECO message to save money on dredging. You are quite right the whole system is at best broken, certainly not fit for purpose.

It's a pretty damning indictment of the state of the rural economy when a relatively successful farmer such as you has to sell equipment to maintain cash flow. As for the flooding - hopeless mismanagement by successive governments who don't give a toss about farmers or the rural landscape. When I was in Normandy in the summer, I saw armies of people clearing verges and ditches.

Ollie, ive been watching your vlogs for some time now, your take on flooding and the importnce of dredging is spot on.
I am a life long user and supoorter of the River Weaver in cheshire. I operte the 120 year old steam ship Daniel Adamson on there now at or near the maximum draft and its a constant struggle.
The river is in flood at the moment and this is the third time since 2019 for a so called 1 in a 100 yer event.
The river is dredged but only spot dredged by the canal and river trust who now say they only dredge for navigational purposes, they are not a flood authority.
Now the river isn't getting the full dredge it used to the effects are there for all to see, all that is apart from the EA who you know try to avoid the issue.
Would love to make contact for a chat about this, the local cllrs nd MPs are doing all they can.
    Keep up the great work.

Being a farmer myself it's tough at times keeping the positiveness going when dealing with weather..prices..volatility...stress etc....what does annoy me though with the nfu is they seem very good at talking the talk...but not so good at getting things stopped or changed for the good of farmers. Having lived and worked on the farm since as young as I can remember....I reckon these are the hardest times farming has seen. Unfortunately I don't have any answers other than we need to have friends to talk to and help each other in these tough times..

Hi Olly regarding the recent flooding problems we have had over the past few days, the Environment Agency and Councils are just not fit for purpose I live in Derbyshire and if I walk round my area, the amount of grids and drains that are blocked is unacceptable, they allow undergrowth and weeds just grow out of control, anywhere, it makes you wonder what the taxes we pay actually do, just pay their wages maybe

I'm guessing that plaque is from Snowball Engineering who is a farmer who has a RUclips Channel. Ollys Farm are looking for a classic Deere..

Villages near here had notices up last year asking locals to clear out road drains if they saw a blocked one rather than the council cleaning them all

Made it to the end. We had 70 mm of rain in cork Ireland. There are 5000 acres of corn crops uncut. What to do next

77% today. I think it very sad and painful that you and others are planting crops and trying to run your business but others, namely EA are not keeping water courses clear to prevent flooding. Anyway another informative video, so thanks for that. Loved the wildlife part.

Gonna be a shame to see the 7710 go, but I do understand the decission. Is it the same field the OSR straw floated off?

Every winter we see towns and farm land flooded, when will the government learn. Waterways need maintenance. Great to see the barn owl, hope theres plenty of food for it. 85% today.

Up here in Diggle they’re building houses on a field that floods every time it rains. So where’s all that water going to go? Probably down to your fields 🤬🤯

Did the same in Tewkesbury then there’s a big outcry when all the houses get flooded each year

@@gilliantovey1014 it’s ridiculous. The environment agency stopped them from building a school on the land. It makes you suspect back handers

No rain here in Abu Dhabi. 95% today, went a saw some friends and caught up on some tasks. I do worry how inefficient government is now a days, I just feel it will get worse and worse if Labour get in
