      I love my 2017 GPS Thumb BO 5. I recently changed the chrome hardware to black and installed a bell brass Just-A-Nut III, then I set the action extremely low and that thing growls like a beast asking to be "tamed" lol
      I've struggled with slapping for over a decade and now it clicked and I've been making progress daily, consistently. Super low action was impossible on my cheap 300 dollar basses with horrible fret work, soft woods and dull electronics

      I've watched a few of your videos and was wondering what your opinion is between the Warwick Thumb NT or BO? I am ready to order a 5-String from Warwick but wondering if the NT has more 'growl' or the BO?
      Thanks!

    • @Halfpastseven
      @Halfpastseven  4 года назад +3

      Bob Wijntjes I actually did a comparison video on that on this channel. I didn’t notice any tone differences to be honest. I think if you want the sound of a Thumb you gotta get the 5 string models either BO or NT. They have the slanted pickups that give it a sick sound. I think the main difference is really cosmetic other than having 2 extra frets on the NT. Sound wise they sound 99% the same. If you want the high end wood choice and look go for the NT if you just want the sound of a Thumb go for the BO. If there was no budget I’d go for the NT though. Also the NT has a 3 band eq vs the 2 band on the BO. I run my Basses passive and use an equalizer so that part doesn’t really matter to me. You can always just use an eq to make up for the lack of mid control on the BO model if you like using the active electronics.

I have both pickups on full blast and then I eq’d the bass to have more 5-10k highs, cut the mids around 1-2k and boosted the bass around 80-100hz. These were newish strings they were D’Addario Pro steel regular gauge.

      Yeah I should do that! That’s a good idea! I can you give a few tips I use in this comment.
      1. Brand new strings Daddario’s super steels medium gauge.
      2. Truss rod set at the proper relief so there is minimal string buzz.
      3. Boost Highs 6k-10k either on your bass or amp/studio gear
      4. Boost high mids 2-4K slightly
      5. Boost bass frequencies 50-80hz
      6. Punch/tap the strings with your right hand fingers instead of the regular finger style, this is what gives it that attack almost like slapping the bass with your thumb. You will have to adjust your wrist for this.
      7. Use compression to bring out harmonics, add sustain and to soften the attack of any harsh frequencies.
      8. De tune the bass to C or lower. (The secret) to the Thumb sounding like a gurgling monster.
      Hope that helps!

      Thank you so much! It’s mainly open strings for the main riff with a half step up and down on the G string on the transition lines to start the riff over. The trick here is the triplets. I use my left hand and thumb to make the triplets instead of double thumbing. And the plucks are added in between where the drums aren’t as busy. They are also single plucks. I don’t have tabs, since I just kinda winged it here and thought it might be cool to put up on RUclips!

    -Full right for neck pickup
    And -centred for both pickups in series-? Or am I just an idiot

    • @Halfpastseven
      @Halfpastseven  5 лет назад

      Yes! On this bass there is only one knob that balances the pickups. Turned all the way clockwise when looking down is 100% Neck pick up. In the center it’s split 50/50 both front and rear pick up and then all the way counter clockwise is 100% rear pick up. It’s a smooth blend knob but it clicks into place when in the centered position. I split the pickups 50/50 in this video.

      It does make a difference but, if you have a good equalizer you can set it at the same frequencies so you don’t have to use the active electronics. When recording I set everything flat before it hits any gear, and do all the Eqs and compression afterwards that way you have more control over the final mix.
