Warwick Thumb 5 ( Neck-Thru vs. Bolt-On ) Bass Comparison - (Nick Lombardi)

- In this video, we go over the sound comparison of two different construction types for guitars and basses, Neck-Thru and Bolt-On.
The two basses are Warwick Thumb 5’s, demoed with the same settings with both pickups set to passive to give the most natural sound and fair comparison between the two. They both have a brand new set of Daddario Pro Steel strings as well. Let us know what you think in the comments below what differences you hear or which one you prefer! Видеоклипы
That neck-through sounds amazing.
Thanks man! They are amazing!
This may be just me, but the thumb is one bass that I actually prefer in a bolt on. The Warwick tone has so much snarl that I really just want that bite from the first millisecond, I don’t need a whole lot of sustain from a neck through design. That said there are also certain basses in which I feel that a neck through is vastly superior
Great insight! Appreciate the feedback!
0:23 man oh man that growl is gnarly
Love that growl! 🤘🏻
This is a great demonstration. Great playing. The neck-thru has so much better sustain. Great playing
Thanks Matt! Glad you enjoyed the video! The NT is a beast!
Love this demonstration. The superb playing is what allows the subtle differences in tone to be heard.
Wow thanks I really appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed it
Great work here, Nick. I've gotta say, the tones here played a huge part in my choice to start playing Warwicks a while back. This video has also been my standard for bass comparisons, leading me to make a Thumb vs. Streamer tone shootout on my channel a few months back. Thanks!
That’s awesome I’m glad I was able to help you! And I will have to check your video out that would be interesting because, I want a streamer stage 1 4 string.
Both of them sound amazing. Im gonna choose the bolt on, but it is so close. Gotta get me a Thumb! Great playing as always my friend! 🔥
Thanks for watching man! Good choice! Warwick makes some awesome stuff, and thank you 🙏🏻
I know im asking randomly but does anybody know a tool to log back into an instagram account..?
I somehow forgot my account password. I would love any assistance you can give me.
@Aiden Cristiano instablaster ;)
@Jonathan Phoenix Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im in the hacking process now.
Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Jonathan Phoenix it worked and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much you saved my ass!
I've just bought a 2017 BO 4 string Thumb which I pick up in a few weeks. After seeing this I am now going to have to save up again and get a 5 string NT! Love your groovy playing. Thanks.
That’s awesome man congratulations! And definitely you should! I have the bolt-on tuned to e standard and the neck-through tuned drop c with the b string also dropped down to G. And thanks glad you dug the tune! 🤘🏻
@@Halfpastseven In this clip both are tuned down. What gauge strings do you use for the drop C tuning? How do find the string tension?
@@michaelotten1956 Yes for this clip they are both tuned to drop C for a fair comparison. And for gauge they are regular light gauge Daddario Pro Steels 45-130. I just do what feels right to me, I think any lower than C tuning with these strings start to be too loose so you’d probably need medium gauge strings to have the proper tension at drop B. I’ve done drop b with this gauge and it’s fine but, for me I think C is the sweet spot. Kinda like middle C on a piano
I just recently got my very first Warwick! A thumb NT 5 model & it sounds so good! Overall upgrade from my Ibanez I was using before. I’m super happy with it & I love to see it in action.
That’s awesome congratulations! And absolutely! The quality of Warwick’s is incredible. Very unique and simple!
What model Ibanez did you have?
@@t.j.meechan682 I still have it and it’s an SR506
@@Halfpastseven nice! I've got the SR875. I love it. I've been considering dropping in the Darkglass tone capsule to see what thats all about.
@@t.j.meechan682 That’s awesome man! Ibanez makes great stuff! So does Darkglass, they have a lot of great gear.
It's a very good comparison clip. keep doing it 🥰
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Flipping killer tone man! Thanks for the comparison!!! Those slap licks are tasty!!!
Thanks man! I was gonna get a Spector but then I was like man, I know Warwick’s in and out better than Spectors so I went with the NT lol.
@@Halfpastseven It's all good man! Go with what you know! I'd still love to pickup a Thumb bass 5 someday. I'm always torn because I know Spector and I could easily throw down on a Euro 5 and be happy with the tone. That being said in a mix my NS2...I just can't find anything that beats it! It cuts and sounds so aggressive and is always heard in a mix.
I always enjoy your vids man! Keep up the killer chops!!!
@@D20band I hear ya! That’s how I felt plus I want the same sound but another bass for a different tuning. I can’t keep adjusting the truss rod and action everytime I try to play a new tuning lol. Gonna have one set in standard and one in Drop C. And that’s awesome I’ve always wanted a Spector it’s hard to find them and play them. I wish GC would carry them, you can only get lucky if a used one pops up. But they sound and look awesome! & thanks man! Thanks for watching!
@@Halfpastseven It definitely helps to have a couple of bass that you can have in different tunings. Man...I'm still debating on selling my Dingwall NG2...It sounds really close to a Thumb bass. I almost want to keep it and maybe try to trade it for a 5 string. I have a 4 string now. Geez, I just need to win the lottery so I can get all the bass tones I after LOL! I suppose I need to start playing it before that will ever be a possiblity haha!
@@D20band They do sound close! And they are a more modern bass! But I hear ya having that 5th string is nice it’s weird without it for me.
The best test i ever seen, very good. I own a nt since 1990 and still have a timid approach, it s not fo beginners anyway
Thank you! & thanks for watching! The NT is an amazing piece of wood that creates some of the best tones. Love it.
Man great video! I could (and do) watch bass comparisons all day!
Neck through for me here, I personally prefer neck through for aesthetics as well 👍
Thanks!! And me too I agree NT is the winner here.
Actually talking to Warwick (Nashville) now to decide between the two (fretless 5 in my case.) I had 4 string Thumb fretless many years ago and stupidly sold it in the early 2000s. Thanks for the very helpful vid!
I made the same mistake of selling haha! Glad I have them now. And anytime! Good luck on your new bass!
Both of them are fantastic and you are really something.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Awesome playing. Love them both..🤘
Thank you 🙏🏻 & me too! 👍🏻👍🏻
I think we can all agree, bolt on or NT, that growl is LEGENDARY! ❤
Such a unique tone! Warwick!
@@HalfpastsevenIt’s funny. I’ve played and owned every bass under the sun for close to 30 years, but my heart always comes back to Warwick. It was my first bass love affair, and I can’t seem to shake it. ❤
@@samuelviden7412 It is a great instrument! Especially the Thumb!
I don't know how this channel is so severely lacking in viewership, but sick video. As always. Tone is nutty and playing is grooving.
Thanks Mark G! 🤷🏼♂️ We are grateful for all our views and supporters! All social media platforms have made it harder and harder for the organic reach so channels are forced to pay money for exposure. The game is different now than it used to be a few years ago. Also the algorithms are constantly changing and getting worse and worse for everyone accross the board so people will end up paying for the exposure they used to get.
@@Halfpastseven I hear you man. Wishing you guys all the best!
@@markg.4952 Thanks man! We really appreciate your support and kind words! 🙏🏻
Absolutely awesome skills 🤘
Thanks so much!!
They both sound awesome, and I have both BO and NT Warwicks thumb basses as well. I also have two katanas. Great basses!😉👍
That’s an awesome collection you got! Working on building mine up too haha! I want a Streamer next 😎
@@Halfpastseven Streamers are awesome!
@@toddstropicals They are! Definitely on my wish list 🎅🏻
Amazing bass...great tone..
Solid player too...
Thanks.
Thank you!
Wow! So Nasty! Thank you so much! Perfection!💖💖💖💖💖
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you ❤️
They both sound great but the bolt-on one sounds brighter and snappier.
Thanks for watching!
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you too!
Both do sound really good, to my ears neck-thru has fuller bass & resonance, and bolt-on more midrange/treble attack... very nice playing btw 👍
Glad you liked it! And it is very close either one sounds great!
Nothing compares to the Thumb bass. NT is a tone beast. So much growl 🐅
It’s so unique! Love it! Thanks for watching!
Neck-thru seemed much brighter and open, but man this playing and tone, so nice dayum, 1 minute 24 of dancing on my chair !
Thanks man glad you dug it!
Got to play one at guitar center yesterday, it was a custom shop German made thumb 5 bolt on, its was $4,500 used, most amazing sounding and playing bass I have ever laid hands on, it was a dream come true, it was the musical equivalent of test driving a Lamborghini
Very boutique! It is like a Lambo there’s nothing like it out there
@@Halfpastseven agreed, the one I played even moreso than say... a German Pro Series, both are amazing but nothing beats that custom shop, it was used but in absolutely amazing condition, albeit a little oxidation on the frets, whoever owned it took very good care of it
Absolutely wholesome.
Thank you! Glad you dug it!
Pretty nice Warwick 😉
Both sounds great 😉
😊😊
Thank you 🙏🏻 Glad you dig them both 😁
Very nice comparison Video!!
I prefer BO sound. because tough sound & deep groove little more then NT.
Anyway both sound are nice good excellent blahblah....:)
Thanks for watching! Glad you like the BO it’s a great choice which is why I have both. I have them in different tunings now so I have a drop C bass and an E standard bass for different sounds and fingering. I wanted a similar sound so I got the NT. I love both.
Great Playing. I prefer the sound of the Bolt on.
Thanks Matthew! Glad you dig the bolt on, it’s a great choice!
Best RUclips sound of Warwick Thumb NT
Thank you 🙏🏻 glad you like it!
great great sound of mix in common! neck through is champion forever! hundred times repeat)
Great choice !
I own a 2013 Thumb BO5. It has Buninga body, wenge neck and fretboard. The same model Andy Irvine reviews on Warwick channel on RUclips. It has a totally different tone from this BO you played. I wonder if the woods play a major role in the tone compared to the construction (BO vs NT).
I think the woods effect the tone for sure. I had a 2012 Thumb 5 NT and it sounded different than the NT model in this video which is a 1999 model. The 99 model has Wenge neck and fingerboard, the 2012 model had Ovangkol neck and ebony fingerboard. I prefer the 99 model.
Mine's a 2016 GPS, ovangkol body and neck, wenge fingerboard but it's my first Warwick.
What grabbed me was how punchy the upper mids are, almost like a vintage Fender. I think body wood plays a big part for sure.
The NT sounded a bit more trebly that I would end up attenuating to make it sound closer to the BO. Apart from that, the tonal character in the fundamental and mid-range content sounds virtually identical.
They are very close and I noticed the same. Could be cause the action was slightly lower.
I’d say the biggest difference would be in more-so in the preamp itself vs the bass. The NT 8khz treble has more bite than the 2.5khz the BO has.
Yeah honestly if it’s on active mode that’s the biggest difference. You can cut and boost those same frequencies without an on board preamp and get the same effect. For this video I kept them in passive mode and used the same eq curve to make it fair.
@@Halfpastseven yup, so sustain would be the only defining factor after that. But either way I love this video and the groove is amazing! Thank you for sharing. Take care, brother!
Upper mid is more "nasal" on the bolt-on and the deeper bass seems more "floppy". The neck-through seems more balanced. both bass are awsome!
Thanks for watching!
Thank
You
So
Much
You are so welcome!
@@Halfpastseven i really wanted to hear a comparison like this. Thanks for this
And most of all, those licks are groovy as @&€!!!
@@rancidraldur4342 Thanks!! Glad you dug the licks! I always was curious of these two models compared and there were no videos so I figured I’d showcase them for you all!
Where do you ‚lend‘ your lines from. I‘m stoked everytime.
I get inspired by other people, or accidentally come on to something by just going for it then working on it from there
It’s got that signature Ryan Martinie / Mudvayne sound
The Thumb bass is that tone for sure!
I love your videos and your tone! I own 2 Thumb Nt5’s and they are just amazing. If you dont mind my asking, what strings are you using and what amp?
Thanks Joe! That’s awesome man! They are sweet Basses! I am using Daddario Pro Steels and I’m not using any amp just plugged straight into an interface where I use Logic 🤘🏻
@@Halfpastseven That sounds crazy good just plugging straight in! Thanks for the info, keep on jammin I enjoy the content!
@@Joe-zk2sw Thanks so much!
@@Joe-zk2sw hey just curious why do you have 2?
Thumb neck thru wins for me dawg
Thanks for watching! Glad you dig the NT! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
That is an amazing riff there! Is it a particular track or just free riffing?
Thank you! This is not a track but a riff made for demoing these two basses.
Too bad😅 got a mad earworm from it
Nice groove!!
Stock pups and preamps?
Thanks! And yup all stock!
Cool comparison! Both are great basses! I did similar comparisons too - mine are both made with ovangkol necks, what neck woods are in your Thumbs? The NT sits better in my mixes for the covers I make, it's more organic & rich sounding especially in the mids, while the BO is more "in your face" punchy. Great playing by the way;] Cheers!
Thanks man! I saw! You did a great job demonstrating the two! & My NT is Wenge Fingerboard and Wenge neck with Bubinga stripes. My Neck-Thru is a, 1999 model and my Bolt-on is a 2003. The Bolt-on is Ovangkol with a Wenge fingerboard.
@@Halfpastseven Thanx! It's nice to know wood specs of your Thumbs;] I'd like a wenge-neck NT one day, and one with ebony fingerboard as well!
@@SaimoN_bass Absolutely! I had a 2012 a couple years ago but sold it and regretted it very badly lol now I have two thumbs 😎
@@Halfpastseven Thumbs up! ;]
@@SaimoN_bass 👍🏻👍🏻
Unfortunately I try to purchase warwick this model bass and no any dealer present in my area
You might have to buy used. I did with mine. Try Reverb or Ebay
Hello, what year of manufacture are the two basses respectively? Thanks, good music!
The NT is 1999 and the Bolt on is a 2003
Thanks! 😊
i love thumbs, but, for some reason, i didnt hear the signature growl that to me makes them stand out...i compare that tone to a slightly dirty Ken Smith growl, few basses ive found can get that thickmbut focused low mid rumble without sounding flabby
The Thumb Basses really are something special.
I listened several times. My preference goes towards the Neck-thru sound I guess, but the bass-player could play a toy and the sound would be great 😉💫
Thanks so much for the kind words! The NT has the slight edge for me as well. They are very close though!
Any recent ig post and good job!
There will be tomorrow stay tuned! Thank you 🙏🏻
Tone Heaven!!! What strings do you like to use on Thumb basses?
Thanks! I use Daddario Pro Steels!

My favorite bass on the planet, no imitators out there....
💯
Bubinga and Wenge both?
Bubinga body and Wenge Neck and fingerboard for the NT. Ovangkol body and Ovangkol neck with Wenge fingerboard for the BO.
Man those things just GROWL... my word
They sure do! Nothing like a thumb bass!
@@Halfpastseven I'm hopefully snagging one soon
@@sonofliberty92 That’s awesome. You won’t regret it.
@@Halfpastseven just got a 2002 neck through from ebay. I'm stoked
Thumb-Thru wins!
I have a thumb thru 4 :)
Thanks for watching and commenting! Love the thru 😍 and that’s awesome! I never got to play a 4 I’d like to someday!
I done soiled myself, god i love a NT WARWICK THUMB!
Me too! Such a cool bass
Bubinga NT all day.....its just soooo damn heavy!
Yes! 🙌🏻 It’s amazing! It is heavy on the neck too but it sounds so good!
They sound very very close. The NT is more scooped but that's splitting hair. I'll take whichever one that has less neck dive. lol
Yeah I agree, the sound is so close and you can adjust the minor differences with a little eq. The main differences are the cosmetics, neck profile, 2 extra frets, and different active eqs pots.
I own both and to be 💯 honest... they sound almost identical. The bolt on might have more of that growl mids if anything
I’d have to agree! I noticed the bolt on has more mids as well.
Slight edge to the Neck-Thru 😁
😎😎😎
I'm not sure about sound difference. So much is made of tone, sustain, etc. Both of these basses in a studio recording may be the same or very close. However, less discussed are feel and playability. I can say I have played one Warwick NT in my life and the feel was incomparable. I wonder if someone could address the haptic experience.
The NT is more comfortable to play, has a less chunky feel to it in the neck and body.
Uff NT es el mejor por mucho
Is it just me, or does it sound like the higher notes have way less sustain on the NT, and the lower notes have way less growl and definition on the BO?
It just feels like the hammer-on/pull-off wobbles he's doing just die on the NT, but the NT has way more of that bottom end grrrrowl to them....
I personally think they both sustain about the same. The NT has a slightly less mid range sound to it compared to the BO. The highs are crisper on the NT. And The Low B on the BO is punchier. Thanks for your input!
@@Halfpastseven Hmmm, I'm seeing that now a bit more than when I last watched. The BO definitely has a lot more midrange, almost too much. Though, that can be tuned with the pickup and amp settings... But the definition on those B and E slaps are just so crunchy on the BO! It's almost a bit hollow on the NT, without the mid range definition, etc...
Idk, the NT seems to have a more natural, woody tone, while the BO seems to have a bit more of a steely sound cutting through... Is that really the effect a few screws have!? :O
Neck-thru sounds pretty damn good, but i would choose bolt-on
Sweet! It is a great bass! & cheaper!
I can't not hear mudvayne when I hear a thumb
That is what makes Mudvayne sound so unique that bass lol
No major difference between either, sonically. I'm listening through room corrected monitors with stereo sub-woofers, so I think I'm getting all the frequencies. When I listened back without watching, I thought I could hear a slight mid bump here and there, but when I checked to see what bass it was, it was either the neck-through, or the bolt-on. I thought the bolt-on was slightly more mid-focussed, but it's not necessarily the case. I expect the main difference would be in the feel of the strings when playing, but even so... The real difference is probably just the price. :)
Your observation is pretty much mine as well. The electronics are the main difference besides the construction. I bypassed the electronics though to give just the construction a fair shot and just ran the pickups. There is a slight zing and less mid range on the NT. The Low B for some reason on the Bolt-On is more punchy but, wasn’t demonstrated on this demo. The main difference.. on the NT, Higher wood quality, Neckthrough construction, better electronics, and price. They sound 99% the same and you could adjust the eq to make up the difference.
@@Halfpastseven Yep, you'd definitely spend the extra on the material, build and electronics. Unless you're just after that sound, of course. :)
@@mrpositronia I agree if you are looking for the Thumb sound The Bolt On is the thumb sound and so is the NT. The NT is the same sound just slightly higher quality on the woods and construction.
The neck through wind hands down playbility. But warwick does not produce anymore because they are expensive
Glad you dug the NT! It’s a great choice!
The neck-thru is a bit brighter and seems to be more responsive/sensible
I got the same effect. Thanks for your insight
Was this just clean di, no eq?
Both in passive but both had the exact same eq and compression settings
@@Halfpastseven if its not a hassle, do you know roughly what that was?
I actually like the bolt on more
It is a great choice and cheaper!
Bolt on for the win!

They both sound great. The BO has better attack with slap n pop. The NT sounds a little better in all other areas so... who cares? 😆
Haha yeah it doesn’t really matter in the end. All about the playing anyways maybe this video will help someone from spending an extra 2k for the neckthrough though
Thumb neck-thru for ever
It’s an amazing instrument!
This cat could make any bass sound great

Remarkable the difference of sustain! The NT is by far longer and clearer!
Glad you dig the NT it’s a beast!
Neckthru is fuckin amazing

BO more punch. Like it. My choice .
Nice choice!!
Neck through sounds fuller.
Love the NT
Thumb BO is warmer than NT.
Thanks for watching and your input!
Neck through won imo.
Thanks for watching and great choice!
People saying they hear different sustain are hilarious.
Honestly if you closed your eyes you would t be able to tell a big difference. It’s very subtle in the tone but not so much on sustain.
It is me or the BO has not or just a lot less the growl that I associate with Warwick thumb ? The TN has a lot more that growl no ?
I think they sound very close to me. If it was a blindfold I wouldn’t be able to tell. The differences are minor mainly cosmetic
@@Halfpastseven Oh yeah at this point :O I though the difference was bigger. The BO has an ovangkol neck or wenge too ? Don't know if that make more a tone or playability/ confort difference
@@Halfpastseven I get a lot less growl with mine BO haha, maybe it is due to wenge (ovangkol on mine), and also pickup because I have a 4 with neck pickup closer to the neck :/
The only problem with this video is that you only made my GAS for Warwick worse.
Hahah sorry!!
