Quick tip if you angle grind any of the gutters...wash down ALL your windows and cills immediately after. The metal filings from the grinder rust quickly and if left will spoil your nice slider windows.
Good on you for addressing the issues surrounding the use of drones. I look forward to seeing this project, especially as it sounds like you are going to do a proper job of it. It is something I could never tackle myself as I have no head for heights :)
It’s not always glamorous doing things properly I guess, it is a little annoying when you see other channels just flying drones around in every video without the correct procedures or permissions. But that said, it’s not taken likely by CAA and got to think of risk to our business and livelihood. 👍
There are several companies in the United States that make trough flashing for slate roofs it may be worth a visit to their web pages to look at the product and get ideas on how you could do it yourself. With your skills I am 100% confident that this is going to turn out fantastic just like everything else you've done to your home. Best of wishes and good luck.
i wasn't looking at the screen when you said the word "ruthless", so i went back to see if you made another annotation (clearly i enjoyed the eye patch more than i should have).
Have you thought about solar PV? A nice in-roof system. Look at Viridian solar or Solfit. Saves you on the cost of slates for a large area and you can produce your own energy.
Very interesting and so glad you pointed out the legality of using your drone in a built up area. It was well worth mentioning that you have your PfCO certification. Question, your sash windows look refurbished, did you do this yourself or get someone to do it for you?
SUPER cool just came in my recommended to see super cool wife and I do same thing you have a new couple to join you all in your home renovation that is so cool too have tile roofing we have shingles here after work today will be checking out the others projects you have done
It looks like a 10-15K job on the roof etc. Hope you manage to save the cash that trades would charge, but it is a big old roof and its also very high up so of you're doing to yourself please do take extra precautions. I get dizzy at anything over 15 ft so it is the one job I cannot do in my house.
I didn't see the complete video nor did read all comments. But for your wall with the old plant and roots inside the wall, algae, etc. you should find someone who can dry ice your wall. With these deep cold temperatures it is easy possible to remove said plants and stuff without damaging the old wall like high pressure water cleaning would do.
If a reclamation yard can see enough potential in the slates to re-sell them, why aren't you refurbing and re-fitting?. Seems a better plan, conservation-wise.
It was the original plan. However we are only expecting 20-30% that can be saved, possibly less and their remaining life will be far less than new. Plus we would be unlikely to be able to tie in ‘new’ salvaged slates to match for a consistent looking roof. The important part is that we won’t be just skipping the lot and I’m sure I’ll be stashing away a few for future projects of my own.
Not sure why we would to be honest, it’s only on one small section of the roof and serves no purpose. I’m sure it could be repurposed somewhere though.
Crazy to even think about re slating that roof imo . I dont think it's possible to replace like for like with the quality of slate that's up there already ...new barge boards ,soffit, gutters flashings etc and ridge tiles rebedding ofcourse. But the slate looks 90% intact at least ... good luck to u guys hope all goes well.
Possibly salvage some of these for the new workshop. If funds had allowed we might have done the garage all with a pitched slate roof to match the house but it’s another 100m2 and at the time the flat roof was a sensible solution.
Great video. Currently having the roof on my house re-slated. It's in N Wales and Penrhyn Quarry is just down the road, but have gone with Spanish slate due to cost (Spanish on the back, reclaimed Welsh on the front - the good slates that were taken off the roof). I totally agree with the barge boards - just waiting for the roofer to finish, so I put up some decent, nicely shaped boards. Like you, I've got an issue with board length - my max run is ~6m. I'll give cedar a look - had been thinking of iroko or accoya. My cast iron gutters have long since gone - considering galvanised steel to replace the tatty plastic that is currently up there.
I had hoped to use accoya however it would mean a joint somewhere, which could be done on the purlin end but still a risk. There is a good chance that our roof came from that quarry or somewhere else nearby I guess. It is a shame that there is such a premium for UK slate but the Spanish seems to be the next best thing.
@@TheRestorationCouple Out of interest, what size are you barge boards? The boards I'll be replacing come in a couple of widths; they are ~195mm and ~260mm wide (lengths of 3.5m (195mm wide), 3.8m and 6m (both 260mm wide)). I've struggled to find single pieces wider than 220mm (most top out around 200mm). I've found some PAR iroko at 260mm wide. I'll be jointing the long boards on a purlin end - the original boards were jointed there too. Just wondering if I've missed a sitter?
Lovely carving at 7.45, you have kept that well hidden all these years! Also some serious leadwork on that bay at the back. What is actually wrong with the slates, is it delamination??? I thought these slates are good for 200 years plus and it is the nails that go around this time. Not saying you are wrong but just asking. The beard looks good!
I bought some spanish slates, your size, back in June. TP did them for £1.14 inc vat each... I was only doing a 18sq.Metre porch, so you could get a better deal for 100sq Metres easily :)
I’m looking at skylights at the moment for my extension, what’s the reason for 1 velux and 1 keylite? I m considering keylite for ease of installation amongst other things.
Graham, hope this helps your choice.....I have all keylite x 8 on my roof. Way cheaper than Velux at the time, never given us an issue other than one of the built in blinds(between the glass) got stuck. Keylite came out and replaced the entire unit. Windows in 5 years now and apart from that wee blimp all good. Would recommend for sure, velux are way over priced for what they are..... just my opinion 👍
I have just done mine - 1x sunlux in the bathroom. Much cheaper and obviously not as nice, but fine... and top hung escape which I wanted. Keylite for the big one. Easily the best to fit and clearest instructions- aside for the different pamphlets not blending well so put some on to them take off wasting 20 minutes. Final one fakro - was a blend between the two. Way better than sunlux, way less clear than keylite. But the preselect option is pretty cool. Velux was way too costly to be an option. The keylite was a Black Friday buy and fakro was clearance. If you have the money, go keylite. If you go something else, don’t forget to buy the thermal collar too, not just the under felt. (Tip - the velux bdx ones fit the fakro and sunlux) All were pvc/coated btw
Have you investigated D/2 Biological cleaner for your stonework? I can attest that it really works, without any damage to stones & headstones. It keeps working and the stones get progressively cleaner over time. It would be Worth a trial anyway.
For non commercial use (in the UK), you can get the CAA drone licence by doing a simple multiple choice test, and paying a small fee. You're not allowed to fly over houses, unless it's your own. No need for insurance or other things. You should definitely read all the relevant regulations, and learn to fly away from people/buildings. Source: I have the non-comercial drone licence (technically Flyer ID and Operator ID). You can find all the relevant info on the CAA web site register-drones.caa.co.uk/individual
Not sure that is what you would call a license as it is a legal requirement now for anyone flying a drone of this size, it is just a quick check test and register for ID number. It wouldn’t allow you to fly over your own house unless you were away from a built up area and people, and not at a roof level. Even if we were in the middle of nowhere, using any footage in our videos would result in need for PfCO anyway. Insurance good practice even if just recreational, not expensive and pay as you go apps are a good option. 👍
@@TheRestorationCouple Yeah, it's not actually called licence (my bad). Anyway, the important part is here register-drones.caa.co.uk/drone-code/where-you-can-fly under "Buildings, structures, vehicles, trains, boats and other types of transport" it clearly says "Does not apply to those you own or where the owner has given you permission to fly closer." So if you have a drone, and the proper Operator ID/Flyer ID from the CAA, you can fly it within your property boundaries (or someone else's property if the owner gives you permission).
@@boatsuk Correct, however that would only apply if you had no neighbours and/or you were 150m away from any residential or built up area. i.e you could be directly above your house but likely to be within proximity of others. In addition, unless you are not in a built up area you would be unable to fly anyway as 150m would be too high even if directly above your house. I did read that at the time the ID register came out and thought it was confusing.
No, just in need of a calibration I think. Spotted that too, it was pretty gusty at eaves height which didn’t help plus I did have to slow down and freeze frame a bit to fit the voiceover over! 🙄
Hi Tim, Jo, girls, hope you are all well. This may just be a suggestion too far for you, but have you considered Tapco synthetic slates? I've seen a couple of jobs recently using this option, and they've been used stateside for a number of years. Recycled material and they look like the real deal. Must be a demo video on youtube somewhere. Like the drone stuff, great idea for scanning your roof job. Thanks for sharing. STay safe and keep up the good work. 👍🖖😎🚙🐶🦴🐔📷🌈

Had that last week on a site where someone assumed it was someone scoping out the local gardens to then realise it was a legitimate site survey. 🙄
The Restoration Couple ok, I thought it was older, my error. I used to live in a rubble stone cottage in Timsbury, the original stacks were local dressed stone. But the weather was not kind and various owners had rebuilt in brick.

Certainly not boring. Necessary. 👍🏻👍🏻 You’re the King of DIY; however, wont it be a bit dangerous climbing on/around the roof?

Steve Wigham sounds like a click bait title!

Mainly commercial photography, (products and construction.) not all drone work but do more and more property shoots with it now.
