  • The Korean language has been becoming more and more popular each year. But what do Koreans think about others learning their language, and about those who can speak it? How about people who are learning Korean, but who can’t speak it well? I asked these questions directly to Koreans.
    How have Koreans reacted to you speaking Korean? Let me know in the comments!

    You should do another version of this asking how Koreans feel about Koreans who grew up abroad/Korean Americans who can’t/aren’t good at speaking Korean! As someone who is mixed Korean/Italian and living in Korea but grew up in the US, I get a lot of different reactions to not being able to speak korean.

    • @naritruwireve1381
      @naritruwireve1381 5 лет назад +34

      I kind of wonder that too. I'm Chinese but was never taught taught the language and never had to speak it as I grew up in Canada. Most responses were like "You're Chinese and you don't know Chinese? How do you not know??". I can speak the words my family use often, but because my family speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, _and_ Taishanese interchangeably, I got them all mixed up, so I doubt I'd be able to converse in Chinese without unconsciously switching between them..

    This was so comforting & encouraging! I really appreciated being able to read what they said. I've studied Spanish from Middle School to College & now I've been studying Korean for about 6 weeks. My issue with Spanish was I would be TERRIFIED to speak to native speakers, fearing they'd be annoyed with me or insulted for using their language instead of using English with them. Plus I was also concerned with how bad my Spanish was. But like in this video, I met ladies willing to help me on different encounters & folks who encouraged me!
    So I'm thankful to have seen this video. I don't want to do the same thing with Korean. I'm loving the language.

    I have ADHD and I experience pretty bad Rejection Syndrome Dysphoria so I am terrified of making mistakes in Koream and making a fool of myself to the point where I simply avoid speaking the language.
    I've now been living in Korea for 3 months so now this has become an ACTUAL real problem because I can't bring myself to communicate.

    I have to admit I was very interested in the Asian culture before, even as a little kid, and still am but I never really wanted to delve into Korean or their culture before I got into Kpop and learned what an interesting language it was. I’ve been called a koreaboo before because I became interested in the language through Kpop, but I just ignore them purely because I’m confident and comfortable in my reasons for learning Korean. I think anyone who seriously wants to learn the language/culture and put in that effort, not just using the cringey romanized phrases that a lot of over the top kpop fans use, should be respected in their decision. I'm definitely not very proficient and I get really nervous if I try to speak Korean to anyone. But this weekend my wife and I went to a restaurant in our small town for the first time. As I open the door there's a group of women talking to the owner and I realize they're speaking Korean. I hold the door open for the women as they leave and the man guides my wife and I to our table. He stops and as I pass him I said gamsahamnida. The man got all surprised and said "wait, what?" And I turned around and said it again and introduced myself very quickly. The look on his face was like it was his birthday and I had brought all the presents. He was so excited that I knew some Korean that we talked for a few minutes and he asked me how I had learned. Later as I was paying for our breakfast he introduced me to his wife and she was just as thrilled to learn I was interested in their language as he was.
    It was a very cool experience even though I was so nervous I was shaking the whole time. I said a few things wrong but they didn't seem to care. They said they looked forward to me coming back. After I left I was newly determined to work harder at studying the language.

      Well america’s backstory and position is totally different, and i see where those americans are coming from. As foreigners who visit for tourism then its fine, but if you were to work for and stay long term in the country it only makes sense to at least put effort in learning the language, which to the native people there is a sign of your dedication. Kinda like you come to a country you obey their laws. Learning the language makes communication easier for you anyway, and also why make other people try to understand you when you’re the one coming into the country?

    I think most people have the same thoughts in every country, although you'll always see some idiots making dumb jokes when a foreigner isn't fluent on that language yet.

    So basically the only ones complaining are Koreans living outside of Korea. From what I’ve seen they say it makes them cringe, the hate it, some called it cultural appropriation, etc,... it’s nice to see that the people living there don’t think the same

    • @GoBillyKorean

      That's sad to hear if you've experienced that. I've fortunately never experienced that from Koreans even outside of Korea. They've always been very surprised, amused, or appreciative (or all 3) when I've used Korean at every skill level.

    • @GoldEvil911
      @GoldEvil911 5 лет назад

      Deutsch ist in der gleichen Sprachfamilie als Englisch, aber das ist genau ein Grund warum es schwieriger und komplizierter sein könnte. Also wenn du für fast dein ganzes Leben nur Englisch lernst, denkst du natürlich nur in Englisch. Das ist aber nicht gut, wenn du dein Deutsch benutzen willst, weil die Regeln und Grammatik in vielen Fällen anders sind als Englisch.
      Basically, German and English are in the same family, but that is just as much of a reason why it would be harder to learn in this case because they are fall enough apart to fuck you up when you only grew up knowing one because of the major noticable differences in grammar and vocabulary. Viel Spaß beim Weiterlernen der Sprache! I'm American and have studied the language since 9th grade. I'm in college now, and still plan on learning it throughout.
