- This is the first episode of the new shop project. I'm calling this one "Project Cheapskate" because I hope to put more sweat equity into this than money. We need to first figure out why it won't start and then prep it to be road-worthy, at least in my opinion.

My father has the same car and it shuts off after coming to a stop and only cranks after a while driving and then after 30 minutes It turns back on, his mechanic could never find the problem and a certified bmw repair center is way too expensive should we just sell it?
That’s a tough call to make. These are pricey to fix. Depending on condition and mileage it has to be better to take it to an independent shop to get fixed. Broken BMWs are very tough to sell for much money.
That excitement when you got it running!! Awesome project!
Thanks 👍 It's so fun when things work out... Now I am chasing a new Check Engine light. It's not going as planned. :-(
Noice! BTW -interested to know what’s your favorite solution to wash the underside? Thx
I really like brake clean for the really messy stuff. But that is prohibitively expensive. Typically is use "Oil Eater" degreaser and then in my pressure sprayer just clean water.
@@DrivingForwardBuilds Many thx - expense of brake clean was the reason i asked! i thought you may have been using some mixed solution with the pressure washer pickup nossel! Will be trying out the injector cleaner device! Cheers
@@rulebrakingthe cheapest I’ve found brake clean lately is Walmart. Right around $3 a can. Still a lot though. The injector cleaner works great. I’ve used it a few times now.
Hey so I have the same diesel it’s starts but won’t run I try starting it with starter fluid it runs and then cuts off would that be the fuel pump as well?
With a diesel you have 2 pumps. A lift pump/low pressure and high pressure pump. You’d have to identify which side of the system is low on pressure. Sounds like you’re heading down the path of a fuel issue though.
@@DrivingForwardBuilds can you recommend the replacement pumps for the two diesel pumps? My BMW dealer is quoting $800 each and I like the price of the one you used a lot more
@@Sventastico The diesel is a totally different system. I would check on rockauto or carparts.com to see if you can find a better price.
@@DrivingForwardBuilds looks the same until you realize the other side also has a pump haha
Very cool man
Thanks Dude!
Looks like a fun project to tackle!
It's exciting. Kinda makes me want another broken BMW.....
I’d change the fuel filter. Fuel pump may have died early due to pressure from it being dirty.
So on these cars the filter is incorportated into the fuel sender housing. The pump has a sock on the bottom, then it feeds through an integrated filter element.
@@DrivingForwardBuilds interesting. BMW is now doing what Honda has been doing for a long time. BMW fuel filters do last long though unless owner used bad fuel.
@@string2155 Yeah, it's a bummer they stopped using replaceable filters. I really like the simplicity of the external filter for maintenance.
