  • Hello!
    Today I talk to you about my beloved 2012 BMW X5 (e70) 35d Diesel SUV. This car is amazing and is a real tank. She's a worrier :)
    Like every car, it has strength and weaknesses and this video I try to highlight that as much as I can and what I observed during my ownership of this car.
    Enjoy! :-)

    Until recently i had a e70 4.8i, fully optioned, and it had a fancy adaptive power steering which was hydraulic and electric assist i believe, and on the hwy the steering ratio was slow and heavy, but in t8ght streets or carparks the steering was light and super fast ratio (less than 1 turn to full lock). Made the vehicle feel very light and nimble.
    Also the ZF trans need regular servicing. Had mine se4viced eith new solenoids etc and it was amazing. Very smooth and intuitive in D, but in sport mode it became an animal with lightning fast shifts and very fun to drive.
    I really miss my e70 and want to get back into one again, considering deleted diesel for torque and fuel economy but ideally a 35i for peak power potential and arguably one of BMW's most reliable engines.

      I miss my e70 too… such a handsome car! If you can get a deleted diesel, I would take that over the 35i! That engine is sublime.

    This is a great machine. Once potholed the engine really wakes up and you really get to enjoy the car. Its a shame you did not keep/pothole this one as it was really well kept inside and out which is hard to find for this color combo. Also comfort driver and passenger is somewhat hard to find.
    Only thing with these car that could be a deal breaker is maintenance costs. If you are not mechanically inclined it could get costly.
    I have owned one for 2 years now 140k on it and I enjoy driving it a lot. Turbo whistle turns heads at the boat ramps and it really pulls once deleted.
    I'm sure someone from the Facebook group would gladly let you drive a potholed one. I assume you follow the group if you know the term "pothole".

      @@mr_perez8644 I miss this car a lot. It has a character and it’s different than newer models. I miss the very heavy steering wheel and the mountain of torque! I’m on some groups on Facebook but I’m not sure if there’s a specific one for just pothole!! I hope one day to try a deleted one!

      @@GrindMyGears Most active FB group I follow is the North American BMW diesel owners group. Very active members with a lot of knowledge on these cars. I swapped my steering wheel with an X6M wheel and got the paddle shifters working and it is a game changer for the X5.

      @@mr_perez8644 I am part of that group and love it. So much knowledge indeed!! For sometime I looked into doing the X5M cluster as well as the steering wheel but then I found the cluster won’t really work well with diesel variant but works much better with 35i so I dropped the whole thing. Good job on doing the steering wheel though!! Must be fun using the paddles! I used to use the stick for manual shifting which I rarely had to do. It’s a shame they no longer offer diesel around here.

    Is there a specific reason why you sold it if you liked it soo much ? Was it giving problem !? I heard those x5s gives alot of problem… i have one i want to buy right now 2012 220,000km tuned stage 1

    • @GrindMyGears
      @GrindMyGears  4 месяца назад

      Thanks for reaching out! Couple reasons I sold it! First, I can’t seem to hold onto a car more than 2 years 😅 second, I replaced the thermostat and quickly realized how much of a pain is to work on this car because of the EGR and all emissions related items sitting on and around the engine. If you’re ok with deleting the emissions related stuff then go ahead and buy it!! It’ll be much more reliable, much easier to work on and it’s a blast to drive. I truly loved this car which is unusual for me but I moved for to a 2020 X5 50i and deep down I know the e70 looked better and drove better. The G05 is much more plush (air ride) and the tech is amazing plus bowers and Wilkins audio is incredible. Those are pretty much the highlights of the G05 platform if you get it loaded.

    Of the 3 engines between 2011-2013 I have all 3 options to buy around the same mileage and price. I hear an extended warranty a must for the 50. In your opinion which do you like the best?

    • @GrindMyGears
      @GrindMyGears  5 месяцев назад +1

      I would stay away from the 50i produced in those years. I would get the inline 6 gasoline engine. Why? It’s easier to maintain in the stock form and performance is better overall. The diesel is fun to have but maintenance in stock form is pricy and it’s a bit slow. It has a character that’s for sure though.
