  • From the looks of it, the sophomore outing for Paverson Games has the makings of a potential masterpiece. Luthier is a thematic euro definitely on the heavier side of medium weight...and it's GORGEOUS! We've got an early look at the game on the table for you, and more details to come!

      Yeah, it really looks like the publisher/designer is making all the right choices.

    At least one of my friends was apprenticing as a luthier, specializing in guitar repair. So that's how I knew what the title meant. 🎻

    They did great with distilled. I’m super excited for this one!

    Wow! There are many changes from what I got the opportunity to playtest. I am happy to see that the Tetris Grid is gone. It will be over the top if you make high-quality poker chips instead of wooden chips.

      I'm a fan of high-quality poker chips, but there's something thematically fitting about the wooden chips that they currently have.

      @@meeple - Can the wooden chips be made in a way that they can be shuffled and sound great?

    Hope you guys can help us understand how much more heavy this will be compared to Distilled. Also would love to know the dimension for the table needed for all this. It feels overwhelming right now to see all these sections and places to go, I think I see 7+ different decks of cards, too. Would love to hear what you think in your review.

    • @meeple
      @meeple  19 дней назад

      It'll take a pretty sizable table. When we set it up to play, I'll be sure to take some rough measurements. In terms of weight, we would say this is definitely heavier than Distilled, which we found to be very medium weight. This isn't as heavy as something like an Lacerda, but it's somewhere in between most likely.

    This game looks flat out GORGIOUS! Perhaps may even be the game Lacrimosa wished it could have been. The worker placement looks very nifty and innovative, but I have concerns it will make the game too chaotic. My main concern is with the start player determining the order of things (and not so much the hidden value aspect). Granted, traditional worker placement allows for players to visit various areas and THEY pick their order of operations. But I see a lot of opportunities where turns can be severely hampered (even when trying to guess the motives of the 1st player). There was an older Ystari game called "Ys" that had a similar (and super fun) hidden worker placement / bidding element. That was a feature I really enjoyed, while providing neat "meta-gaming" experience I imagine may also be present here.
    It's usually a treat when a game does something completely different. It's a risk I often wish publishers and designers would take more often, yet here I am voicing a concern before even played. I hope I'm wrong, because other than that this looks like a winner IMO. Maybe this is a game that plays better with less player counts?

      I understand what you mean, and we'll have to see. We should have a deeper dive preview up on the channel in the near future, so stay tuned.

      @@meeple That's a very good idea, and 100% needed IMO. Stefan Feld's (absolutely brilliant) Marrakesh is certainly a game that warranted more than one video, and I suspect this game also deserves a deeper dive.

    ha. I love that the score track is, literally a musical score...track, because of course it is.
    Not sure if I like the almost programming-like aspect of having to pick all your actions and then having someone else screw that over by picking the order of those actions, but we'll have to see how it actually plays out.
    I had heard about the baton being in there, and was actually hoping for more of a baton than a piece of cardboard, but it's still kind of a cool addition.

      Fair comment on the baton, but the Vincent Dutrait art baton that this one is--it's pretty sweet!

    Can't wait to see your more in depth review! The core mechanic of bidding placement, along with when/how you resolve was inspired by mainly a combination of Caylus (place first, resolve later), Forbidden Stars (place tokens face down in stack with limited information), and Puerto Rico/San Juan (variable phase order).
