some advice from someone who's been through this ....
    1) the insurance company is not your friend
    2) research trades people . We had people from all over the country swoop in to make a quick buck .
    3) people who's houses survived this tragedy need to go over it with a fine tooth comb ,namely attics and roof damage . The embers from the fire that rolled through my town blew over a half a mile . fridges and freezers will most likely need to be tossed
    4) The powers that be will need to consider fire breaks around populated areas .
    5) all this of course is secondary to the loss of life . My thoughts are with you folks in this tragic time ... 🙏🙏🙏

Do not let the state take it over! They will surely f it up. It should be a business improvement district with the private owners agreeing on how to build the next generation of eclectic businesses. Not a homogenous design concocted by bureaucrats. I’ve been going to Maui for nearly four decades. I’ve seen it change over time, but the bones were still there. It will never be the same, but don’t let the state or feds do stupid stuff there.

While it's great that the state is looking to protect and help rebuild Lahaina, it's a bit concerning to hear of plans to take over the land and redevelop the area as it sees fit. It's also concerning that cadaver dogs are going into toxic and hazardous areas without appropriate safety gear for respiration and footwear. They cited glass, nails, and smoldering materials in the rubble. If these areas are dangerous, working dogs must have appropriate protection. I would think that anything less would be inhumane and immoral.

Locals are saying towns next to Lahaina are untouched and they are requesting supplies because the southern road has been blocked off and people are trying to use the north road to get supplies in. Anything north of the interstate in Lahaina is also untouched.......One resident further to the west said her town has many holiday homes in it and are asking families who own the homes if they can rent them out to families who are now displaced........I don't think they are going to worry about rebuilding yet until they locate all the bodies.......89 bodies now......1000 missing although many people might turn up in the next town.

Looking at the Banyan Tree in the sunlight that bright, to me it looks good. Even though the leaves are burnt, but the trunks are okay. Cause Banyans have 4-5 layers of protection, and there’s no oil in it. Like a pine and a maple, they have oil from saps and sugars. That’s when trees are flammable. Also thanks to the 46 limbs supporting it to stand and glad there’s no grass. Otherwise it will lead to the roots and burn. So we still can help it. Just give it 4,000 gallons of water and a little fertilizer. Just not too much fertilizer. Or the tree will burn for real. So let’s go Maui! We have a tree to save. Do it for Lahaina! However, authorities went in and took a video for the residence affected and then met with them individually so they could see whether their homes were still standing or not. It was weeks before they were allowed to go back, but there was also government federal and provincial resources to assist them. They were never allowed to go willy-nilly back to the affected areas until every spot was cleared, which took several weeks. Seems a bit too convenient, since Green has been pushing the WEF agenda with his climate change bs, and the upcoming Hawai'i Digital Government Summit next month. WEF names Maui to be one of their smart cities YEARS ago, also very coincidental that most (maybe all) the celebrities on the Island are WEF goons. I don't know why Kanaka keep turning the other way. Not only is culture and language going to be gone, but look on their website, they want to take away our humanity, it's on their videos and websites, I am tired of being called crazy, it's right there, they talk about it. They want to control reproduction, take away gender, what is it their commercial said?"you'll own nothing and be happy".

I live in the Oakland fire neighborhood and grew up here now fairly old. Things there are progressing at same pace as us. We made memorial tiles and put them on a wall. We and Paradise lost quite a few people and pets too all very sad in addition to the stuff and buildings but stuff and buildings can be replaced. Fema helped with clean up and clearing property insurance companies helped with temporary housing during rebuilding and local business owners gave us a break on replacing furniture. Property owners were allowed to rebuild some with a house that was a copy of the original one person came by with a old photo of my friend's house so she used it for the architect to draw a plan like the original home (of course with up grades ) . One problem we ran into in the area is the sewer line and storm drains were wrecked by the fire heat so they had to be redone even in the areas nearby the fire that didn't burn. All this started within the year . The rebuilding took 2 to3 years. Today new people wouldn't know the fire was there. I think it is best to let the locals and property owners rebuild as it was before because it gives people hope and joy to see life go on and tradition to continue. I don't like the suggestion of building condos or low cost housing there. A memorial plaque and park would be appropriate my family also has connections to Paradise where my grandpa built a cabin (:it burned) and Santa Rosa both places rebuilt homes and businesses as before. .

I also live in Oakland. I well remember how frightened we were when we couldn't find our college age daughter. She was ok, but it was a scary time. Our hearts go out to Lahaina. Not only are there those who lost everything including family members & beloved pets, but the amazing artisans that lost all their pieces in Front St. galleries. I particularly mourn for Sam Ka'ai, who at 85 has just seen his lifetime collection of sculpture including his handmade replicas of tools and war implements from before contact. He use his carvings to educate about Hawaiian history and what made it possible to settle & thrive on these islands.

Any structure needed within the 300 yards, should only be built below the terrain surface. The marina should be placed Inland. The old buildings are gone, now there's an opportunity to recreate the coastline of the city back into the Hawaii paradise it was before humans covered the beach in concrete & asphalt.

The Gov made some important points about the future. Expanding on his ideas: The State could use imminent domain to acquire the entire burned area, paying owners market value,; clear the destruction (contains toxic waste); working with displaced and other people of interest, determine what and how to rebuild (homes, esorts, employee housing, etc) . A large memorial park would not generate enough income. Sell or lease approved development rights to a specified population. As the Gov alluded, if not controlled, wealthy from around the world will buy the land and change this town forever, and not for the better. At 27 April I walked the water front and feel in love with the historic district. This is heart-braking.
