I'm blown away how well they've been able to change so much while still making it feel the same and familiar, like cutting certain sequences but keeping the important bits in what is basically the same setting. so good.
When I saw that girl who was looking at Ellie from afar I remember some dialogue from the second game, it made me all happy and just be like “it’s like what she said.”
Joel to Ellie: "Dream of sheep ranches on the moon." This sentence says so much. Joel already connects Ellie's dreams with his. Next episode Ashley Johnson (Game Ellie) will properly get an appearance in the Ellie Flashback. We probably already met Dina in this episode. Ellie yelled at someone during the meal. I think this is Dina. And if I'm not mistaken, she also sat next to Ellie and Jesse in the cinema.
Joel yelling out, "TOMMY!" gave me chills and then a punch in the nose. I wish they got a longer and warmer reunion. Seeing flashbacks and talk of Sarah is so painful, even now. I was not expecting for Joel to pass the responsibility to Tommy but as I see his eyes well up, I think it may be real. I was screaming at Joel, "NO! DON'T PULL IT OUT!!" I can't imagine what happens next.
I’m so glad they’ve done well enough to get picked up for season 2, they dropped so many things in this episode that will pay off later that would just never would have happened if they only got the one season. They also did an insanely great job once again making the locations look exactly like the game. Kudos to the set designers and the construction teams who built this world. The way Joel or Pedro rather is acting with gripping his heart and the way he reacts, agreed, it reminds me indeed of what it’s like to have a panic attack, I was feeling the tension of one with him, or the start of one in myself when those moments came on. Sheep do indeed do what they’re told, they can recognise their owners voice and will follow… which is why the whole thing about being a follower is what we call a sheep when it comes to people.
Fun fact: the historian building in the background when Ellie says “school of the bighorns" is actually the post secondary institute I got to. A lot of this show actually got shot in the city of Calgary Alberta which is where I live. I actually saw and took a picture of them filming on campus. It was so cool seeing in it this show knowing I go to school there.
80s means trouble. I don't know if you noticed that the song at the end of the episode was a cover of the same 80s song by Depeche Mode that played as the "alarm" at the end of episode 1.
I found it difficult not to talk about certain things, just because I know there are people watching the reactions that haven't played the games! haha there was A LOT! haha
my indigenous heart was so happy to see that old couple in the beginning, they got the vibe so spot on for us LMFAO even the ol "holy" and "howah" just made it so much better
I really love every single actor in this show so far, they kill their roles, but this episode definitely was Pedro Pascal's moment to shine. The man is amazing at what he does.
This show is a master class in how to adapt a story game. All of the changes from the game really serve the story perfectly and make for such an emotional ride. Don’t know if you noticed that the song at the end of the episode was a remade version of the Depeche Mode song from the first episode. An 80s song = Trouble 😬
Love how articulate and in-depth your reactions are, and how appreciative you are of how and why adjustments have been made for this medium! Another great episode, stellar performances and awesome shots - going to be sad when we reach the end of this season!
This is by far Pedro’s best episode and probably my favorite since the pilot. Pedro deserves some recognition for this episode. Also it’s actually Craig mazin’s daughter singing the song at the end of the episode.
I really appreciate you retraining from commenting on what's coming even though you know, all those other nerds are insufferable and their obvious need to let everyone know that they've played the game, and that's just ruining watching reactions for me, but yours are really spoiler free and fun so kudos to you
I really try! I know a lot of people are following along that haven't played either game so I'm trying my best to keep that in mind! It's hard sometimes haha
I think its ironic that Tommy used to swear like a sailor but now he's all goody goody with his new wife he hasn't known that long. Right here with you. As a WV that literally lives on the side of one of the ridges of the Appalachian Mountains, I can appreciate the scenery in the big mountains out west.

I’ve played the game hundreds of times but even knowing the story doesn’t spoil it, the writing & performances are so great it’s like experiencing it for the first time all over again.
He's not really giving her a choice. He already said he was planning on leaving 30 minutes before they got there. It's just like when he says she's not his daughter. It's a lie. His been trying to convince himself that she means nothing to him since he became responsible for her. He has already made up his mind not to leave her. He just can't bring himself to admit it, because him being slow and too old is also a cop out. It's a fear for sure, but not one person can protect someone 24/7 by themselves in that situation. He has to sleep at some point. He also has to rely on Ellie and he hates it. But the beautiful thing about Joel's and Ellie's relationship is we never need that confirmation. It's clear just from watching them that they are a father daughter duo.
I like what they did. Like you said, they've managed to stay respectful to the characters and the important things of the story - while including call backs to the games - yet change some locations and order of events. Even Joel's accident. It makes sense. Even though he's impaled in the game, it always seemed to me he lasted a little too long with such a deadly wound. This just makes more sense for what's coming.
Not having played the game I was WRECKED with nerves this entire episode. The longer it went without any infected the more terrified I became about what the hell kind of emotional damage they were gonna deal me and. well. I was right to be scared.
Found your channel recently because of this show, staying for your HOTD reactions later. I love your reactions to the show. I've never played the game and it's interesting to see someone watch who has. I love your full range of emotional reactions and how much you are enjoying it!
So many people think Joel wasn’t right to tell her she doesn’t know what loss is But compared to him she doesn’t She lost her friend She lost who she barely knew for like a couple of days Joel not only lost his own daughter, but it was his responsibility that happened If you had not left and went to the river alone, they would’ve had the gun If you would’ve acted decisively when they came into contact with the soldier, he might’ve been able to save her That guilt is nowhere near my best friend got killed or someone barely knew
I don’t think Joe believes Marlene can do that for a second He’s trying to make Eli feel better by lying the same way he does later on after he saves her It’s what adults are supposed to do for children
Some people also make the point in the last episode that oh Ellie would be so angry when she finds out the truth, especially that Joel killed Marlene She doesn’t even know Marlene If she knew her, then she would’ve recognized her in the room The only person she’s close to Is Joel She’s showing a great deal of maturity by deciding to go with him as soon as he offers, even after that argument She would never stop talking to him because he lied to her So I do hope they change the second game otherwise season two is going to suck
So far I think this episode would probably be the most annoying to watch with one of us gamers just because of how often we'd be doing the DiCaprio pointing at the screen meme. Love the way they're handling Joel's emotional damage. Others have already said it in the comments but the changes they are making have been pretty solid so far in driving the story forward. Most of what's changed is either game play stuff which probably doesn't translate all too well to television or to areas that weren't really that important in the game and more there to give us a level to play in, as much as I love the dam in the game.
I actually really liked that we actually got to see inside Jackson earlier than we did in the games. We also get some great foreshadowing of what's to come.
Why did joel and ellie go out of the building when they saw the raiders? Because they were worried about the horse? They would have been better off staying in the room.
Thoughts on season 2 and The Last of Us Part II I'm a bit concerned. Those who played *Part 2* know what happens. If you know, you know. I mean, the entire plot of TLoU II revolves around that one thing, so I'm not sure how they'd navigate that - it wouldn't really be an adaptation at that point but a complete revision. And as much as people may not like the decision, it made perfect sense within the context of the story and emphasizes that there are consequences to one's actions (even if we the viewer/player agree, understand, or at least sympathize with those actions). Incidentally, that very idea is a core theme throughout the second game, as the paths that Ellie and Abby decide to go down have disastrous consequences for the both of them and they lose more than they gain. It explores the dangers of the "eye for an eye" mentality and how it just breeds a cycle of violence. There's nothing wrong with disliking the decision itself - I certainly didn't WANT it to happen - but I can appreciate why it happened and understand why it was important to the narrative of the series as a whole.

I'm a capitalist, but even I understand that capitalism wouldn't really work in an apocalypse where most of the human race is dead and you're living in a small commune of survivors.
