canada's immigration system is generally merit-based, but that doesn't apply the same way to refugees. for refugees it's a matter of legitimacy/safety. you can have both approaches so it's not just rich or educated that can come in.

I think Bill is just trying to lend screen time to other candidates who have new, viable ideas and solutions to contribute. There is only so much one can squeeze in 50 minutes per week.
Also, I hope we can take the time to think critically and not automatically polarize ourselves over politics. The less of this "Us VS Them" mentality, the better for everyone.

Long ago, American government allowed frontiersmen to put up fences anywhere in the wilderness and just claim that land as theirs--because there was too much empty land, and not enough people to populate it and build towns. But once the wild west was more or less populated, the government stopped this program, for obvious reasons.
Same thing goes for immigration. Once, the U.S. desperately needed immigrants, so it accepted anybody that walked in through Ellis Island. Today the need for immigrants is considerably less. Therefore it is sensible to be more picky about accepting immigrants. That's the concept of merit-based immigration.
Why do Democrats refuse to see this obvious truth? "America accepted immigrants without qualifications before, so it should keep doing that"--well, that's like saying America should keep giving out free land even though the frontier was closed a long time ago.

It was a very bad day for the cause of protecting America’s wilderness and resources some years back when the Sierra Club secretly took $100 MILLION in tainted donations from Wall Street investor David Gelbaum. The enormous contribution came with STRINGS ATTACHED, namely the stipulation that America’s flagship green organization would not mention EXCESSIVE IMMIGRATION as harmful to the environment generally and resource preservation in particular. As a result, the Club management rejected its own previous environmentally proper immigration policy of population stabilization with no explanation. The real cause was a closely guarded secret for years!!

He worked shit jobs in fast food restaurants until he could buy a franchise of one. After he sold that he made his own restaurant. With that restaurant he put his daughter through med school and his son through college (now works as a producer at a local news station) and bought them both houses. He didn't have a day off for 18 years. He was at his restaurant everyday working. He was an unskilled laborer that didn't speak English that, in 1 generation, had a successful small business, raised 2 highly productive members of society, not to mention his wife is a teacher. she came over too. I don't think I need to say more about her. she's a fucking teacher. I learnt so much from her, she is so good at explaining why our economy has gone wrong or how to better it. She and Michel Lewis are the two who taught me nearly all I know on economy, at least the economy of the last forty years. She taught me about the, boom bang economy of before the 28 crash as well as more recent bits of economy. You should listen to her. You would get lots of ideas from her.
I like Bermie Sanders a lot, I also like Elizabeth Warren a lot and I am a person who usually finds candidates to elections pretty uninteresting. I love the show, and Tulsi Gabbard or Bust in 2020... Bill Maher will you consider doing a show that includes what is actually happening on our southern border... From May 27, through June 2, 2019, Just this week here in El Paso over 6000 thousand undocumented immigrants entered the USA through my city El Paso. As of the end of the 5th month, May 2019, 116,000 plus thousand undocumented immigrants have entered the USA through El Paso. On just one day May 12, 2019, in groups of 250, 195, 218 and 302, according to a news release from the Border Patrol. By the end of the day May 12, 2019, there were more than 1,700 migrants who illegally crossed into the country through El Paso. At the Kelly memorial food pantry where I volunteer 8 weeks ago we ran out of money to buy meat, every week now we run out of fresh veggies because we are being overwhelmed...Hell not even the fake Mexican beto o'jerk has done a damn thing for his home town..WTH democrat's... We have been over run, WTH is the GOVERNMENT WAITING FOR, For gods sake they are coming out of the actual sewers, and street crime like car jacking s are increasing all over the city...The sum total from 2017 through 2018 of undocumented immigrants who entered the USA was a TOTAL of 30,000 thousand...WTH!!! Do not take my word for it, come see for yourself.

This response is for Mr. Wilkerson. He said he didn’t know what the military thought about Trump right now. I am a 25 year retired vet who is now a DOD contractor at a large base, so I know firsthand what military members think of their President. They are overwhelmingly in favor of Trump and hope he gets re-elected. There are definitely some that don’t like him, mostly young troops, but when I speak with most of them they don’t have a grasp of the issues, and aren’t interested in voting anyway. There are also the outliers, a Berkeley grad who comes to mind who is a Democrat, a few African Americans and Hispanics who dislike him as well. But even if you don’t believe me, you can make a determination for yourself. Do a search on which states provide the most military members and also look at the composition of the military by race and gender. It’s very clear. Lastly, Mr. Wilkerson stated that the military didn’t like Hillary because she is a warmonger. That had very little to do with it. They disliked Hillary because she mishandled classified material and got away with it. Most military members know someone who mishandled classified and ended up with their careers destroyed. It is just so unfair. Another big reason Hillary was so disliked by the military was her handling and reaction of Benghazi. She wasn’t 100% at fault, but she definitely wasn’t innocent of the whole thing like she wanted everyone to believe. But the final reason many people in the military disliked her is because she is just a horrible person. The military is a small community and some of us do interact with politicians and then we go back and talk to the masses back at home station or our next duty station. Hillary treated some military people like they were servant trash and those interaction were shared by the stories they told. Trump’s interactions with the troops are completely different. He takes the time to recognize and appreciate the military. He was at the AFA and shook hands with 1,000 graduates. There are many, many other stories of how Trump has allowed the military to feel appreciated. How did the military feel about others? President Obama was very popular with the troops, he came across as genuine when speaking and interacting with us. I also heard stories of how Al Gore treated military members with contempt.

Proper They understand he is far from perfect, but they also understand that there are nuances to those mistakes. The Vietnam War, sure, he could’ve hidden out in the National Guard like a bunch of other rich people did. But he has stated many times, he would’ve lived his life different if he knew back then he was going to run for President. As far as the attacks on different people, we all see that as just punching back when he’s been attacked publicly. It’s not an attack on the military, it’s a political attack. He sometimes shoots from the hip without thinking. People like his authenticity, but the dark side to that is sometimes saying the wrong thing. It is what it is. Look, we don’t know who his Democratic opponent is going to be, so it’s still too early to say whether his popularity amongst the military will last up to the election of 2020. Im just giving my opinion of what it is today, and that is a favorable opinion by most.

@john smith Well, if we ignore the long shot variable for a moment, Bill Weld and Andrew Yang are by far the candidates with the best ideas. (The rest are mostly clowns in my opinion).
Secondly, every time a candidate from the same party has successfully challenged (not defeated, but challenged) the incumbent at a primary, the incumbent went on to lose the general election. So if history can teach us anything, is that ALL Democrats (and patriots) should be helping Weld.

I wish more people would realize that merit-based whatever is meaningless in a society where all policies are essentially decided by those with the all the capital, namely big corps and banks with only profit, self-preservation, and self-interest in mind.
