  • This 2000 Yamaha Warrior had a starter clutch failure. I had done a lot of work to this Yamaha Warrior YFM350 before I started my youtube channel. As time went by here in the shop this quad started cranking over slower & slower. I knew the starter had been replaced recently. after checking the battery for proper DC voltage only one thing left to check. Yup you guessed it the oneway bearing AKA starter clutch.

    Hi Kyle, thanks for the reply, I have finally got to the bottom of this, I was handed this job to me after it had sat in a warehouse for over a year and I discovered someone had been at it before me, in fact two mechanics had a crack at it. At the time I wrote to you I was waiting for a new starter because I though it was at fault and when I fitted it the starter went the wrong way, so I reversed the polarity of it and same problem so I decided to take the side casing off to check the starter bearing and low and behold bearing had been fitted wrong way so turned it 180. After that I fitted everything back and returned starter to correct polarity and pushed the button and it fired first time. definitely a new one for me but one I will never forget, PS When I said two mechanics where there before me maybe they were not, much appreciate you getting back to me, good luck in the future. Ian.

    Hey Kyle, Just caught your channel today searching for a grizzly 660 2003 model. I'm about to undergo a starter clutch removal and assembly. What I am getting confused on is going into the same side as I had done when I replaced the belt. My service manual doesn't show from the beginning on the outer shell of the engine to let me know. If I would have known it was on the same side I would have replaced it when I had it torn down last month.....grrrrr

      Hey Paul. The starter clutch should be on the same side as you flywheel & stator. I don't believe it's on the same side as your clutch. The rotor should be on the left side of you atv.

    Hi Kyle, subscribed to your channel, great video, I am having much the same problem with a Jianshe 400cc Mountain Lion, very difficult to turn on compression stroke, It has a pull cord and electric starter, when I pull the cord engine goes anti clockwise sitting on the bike, then when I use the starter engine goes clockwise, yes very strange, any help would be appreciated. Thanks Ian from Scotland.

      Hey Ian thanks for checking out my video & the comment. Now that is a strange one. I have never seen an engine do something like that at all. You should take a look at the timing marks on the fly wheel while you are slowly Turing it over. It should have a F mark for firing & a T mark for top dead center. when turning the motor over in the proper direction the f should hit the mark on the engine cases first followed by the timing mark.l not the other way around. Also it's possible the some how polarity of the starter got messed up some how. That's a hard one to diagnose with out it in from of me to see exactly what us going on. Hope this was a little helpful & I hope your flywheel/rotor has both of those marks lol.

      Hey Slick Rick. I actually had another on with the gear already on it but what you can do is put the gear in the freezer over night. The will help it shrink. Then you should be able to put the bearing on with out a lot of force. You can also heat up the bearing before you put it on & it should fall right on.

    I just put a new starter clutch in and when it’s running i hear a clicking every so often, tends to bog the motor out, took it for a ride after repair started making the noise and now it’s having a very hard time turning over even if it does. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

      Hey Austin. I would definitely take is all back apart & make sure that everything is seated all the way. Sounds like something is definitely binding up. You could of got something put in a little off causing this issue. I definitely would not ride it in that type of condition But I would definitely try to turn it over by hand to see if you could feel it what is binding up.

    Hi Kyle. Was wanted to ask a question. I have a kawasaki 360 4x4 seems like it spinning fast not engaging motor. Checked valve they all seem to be good. Last time I rode it . Sound like it had a ticking noise. Any help

    • @limitlesspowersportsservic3394
      @limitlesspowersportsservic3394  Год назад

      Hey Martin. When you say spinning fast are you saying you can hear the starter spinning but the motor is not cranking over? If that is the case then you could have a starter clutch issue. The one-way bearing should only spin in one direction freely but there is always the possibility of a stripped starter gear are other gears. As far as the ticking sound that could be just the valve train making sounds are it could of been a sign that the onway bearing on your starter clutch was going out. Things like that are sometimes hard to diagnose when you don't have a unit in front of you. I hope this was some help for you.

    How did you get the flywheel over the key way can’t get it to pop back in place

    • @limitlesspowersportsservic3394
      @limitlesspowersportsservic3394  Год назад

      Hey Chris. Make sure your woodruff key in all the way set in place. You may have to tap on it a little to make sure it's fully seated in to place. Then line up the cut out for the on the flywheel & it should just slide back into place. unless the keyway is damaged are the woodruff key is damaged. Also as you tighten the bolt down that will fully seat the flywheel. Just don't force anything.

    My warrior 350 will NOT start in the morning after sitting all night , but soon as I get it fired off the first time it’ll start all day long , do you think this is a compression issues or what ? • @limitlesspowersportsservic3394
      @limitlesspowersportsservic3394  2 года назад +1

      Hey WD Exotics. It is possible that it is a low compression issue. When was the last time you did a valve adjustment? A leak down test will tell you if it's valves are rings. also depending on the yr of your warrior. Some have a source coil & a pickup coil. I've had the source coil go bad in the older ones. I could pull it with another quad & start it then it would start all day after the fact. I would just do a major service to it so you cove all the stuff it could be unless it's electrical. Spark plug, air filter, leak down & compression check & valve adjustment ect...

      @@limitlesspowersportsservic3394 I’ve done a valve adjustment twice so far just to make sure I did it right , nothing changed other than the tick it had when I got it . The last couple days I’ve got it to start by shaking it back and forth while hitting the start button . Not quite sure if the carb is flooding due to a float issue or what . Just rebuilt the carb with new seat on the valve so I hope it’s that and not a compression issue . When I do get it started it doesn’t smoke at all and runs fine until full throttle it sputters some and upon stopping it revs up really high , any opinion on what that could be ? It’s an 04 bored to a 366 with fmf platinum 4 exhaust

    • @limitlesspowersportsservic3394
      @limitlesspowersportsservic3394  2 года назад

      Yeah it sounds like you probably have an air leak somewhere if it's reving up when you stop. Also being a big bore kit did you re just the carburetor & adjust the mixture screw? At wide open you quad is running off the main jet. It could be a step are two to small. I would try adjusting you mixture screw maybe start at 2 full turns out from fully seated. when you adjust a mixture screw you will need to adjust your idle screw also. Give that a shot & let me know what happens.

      Hey Billy. So what kind of issues are you having with it exactly? Sometimes the bearing just starts to get flat spots on the ridges & slips are they just spin freely & don't lock to turn the motor over, the can also make a lot of sounds when going bad too. It's a pretty inexpensive part to replace.

    • @limitlesspowersportsservic3394
      @limitlesspowersportsservic3394  2 года назад

      Hey James thanks for checking out the channel. Not exactly sure what you're trying to ask me in your comment. The timing chain has nothing to do with the one-way clutch / starter clutch. The timing chain runs directly off the crankshaft and up to the camshaft sprocket.
      If your timing chain is loose it's a possibility that your timing chain tensioner is starting to fail, or your timing chain has got stretched out. Stretch out timing chain can cause your motor to go slightly out of time. I hope this answered your question? If not leave me another comment and I'll get back to you or you can email me at limitlesspowersports78@gmail.com

      It is a possibility but I would also check to see if you can turn the motor over by hand easily & smoothly to make sure that the top end didn't start to seize up are drop a valve. Check vavle clearances & timing to start off with after you take the spark plug out & try to turn it over by hand. Also check your charging system to make sure it's charging the battery at about 13.5vdc at idle. Weak battery can cause the slow turing over too.

    Will the quad have spark or no spark with a bad starter clutch?

    • @limitlesspowersportsservic3394
      @limitlesspowersportsservic3394  2 года назад

      Well that all depends on if the starter clutch is completely shot and it's not rotating the motor or if it's still catching and slowly turning the motor. It will not have spark if it was completely broken and spinning freely because it's not rotating the rotor to create magnetic charge. Also if it's turning over very very slow sometimes it will not gain enough magnetic current to create enough spark to make it fire off. If you're not getting any spark there are few things you can check you can. Check the primary and secondary windings of your ignition coil.You can check the spark plug cap, you can check the spark plug and you also can check depending on the year your source coil and your pickup coil. lf they are not in spec that could be your issue.
