@Arjan Aulakh I had the B7 55inch. Looked great to start with but after less than two years terrible burn in plus discoloration on the middle of the screen (which can't be due to any static image) and even a clear Rectangle in the middle that's slightly different tone (I believe LG will fix that particular issue with a firmware upgrade. I did not see this review till today but last week purchased X90J. In this review it may seem the 2 sets seems closely matched but after comparing the tv's myself before my purchase, the Sony X90J has far superior picture quality to all the rest. You say the viewing angle makes the Sammy better as a PC monitor, I do not agree with that, and this is 100% of my use case. I sit right close and better picture quality is a much bigger factor than the viewing angle of VA, for me. In store I just put the same content on both and try and adjust the picture till I'm happy and the X90J was a no brainer for me. Why would I game at 1440p? The RTX 3080 smashes out over 100FPS on this at 4K and its just beautiful thing. Have a great time ya'll with whatever set you choose ! The RTings for each use case is important because people do use these things differently.
Don't care about wide viewing angles. I am always directly in front of the tv...and other guests at my place as well(10 degrees here and there). So for me Sony all the way
Not to mention the viewing angle test they show, the Sony looks fine, the Samsung gets darker and darker the further you get to the side, I don't understand how that's better.
I was in real life comparing exactly these 2 TV's for purchase. I already have a Sony SS which is why I wasn't looking at the X95J. I'm not a gamer, the ManCave is dark & straight on viewing angle. For this reasoning the Sony X90J was perfect for me & Thank You for a very good job of reviewing. I purchased the TV & am expecting delivery within a week.

@@mrbungle589 OK thanks. Yes even I hate IPS panels due to their low contrast. It's not fun to watch. Yes the only benefit they have is better viewing angles.
I feel like Samsung put IPS/ADS panels in the Q line so they would look worse next to the new (and more expensive) miniLED QN models. Upsell strategy. Q80T with conventional FALD scored almost the same as the midtier QN series.
Two high-performance TVs, but having to choose I would not even think about it for a second, in the tv world Sony is number one. My point of view is those who disagree never had a Sony in their life. Again, that's my opinion.
Thanks for the physical visual/comparison. Had a salesman try and get me on the Q80A but after seeing this review and doing my research, I will stick with getting the X90J because of the contrast ratio and my main usage, movies and HDR.

I can't believe the Sony can't offer VRR. But thankfully they check all the other gaming boxes. Overall picture quality will always be the first priority for me.
I chose between Samsung Q8 vs Sony X91j I with the Sony. The blacks are amazing the colors do pop (not as bright tho). But the picture on the Sony looks better. It’s amazing out the box.
This was the dumbest shit I've ever seen.. Their logic is so flawed it made me vomit.. Their "categories" makes no f**king sense when the Base important aspects are ignored.. Am I the only one that saw how bad the contrast was on QN80A and how bad the black uniformity is.. Literally clouding. Why would ANYONE ignore those aspects when for example choosing a PC monitor between them? And go "hurr durr, the Samsung as 5ms faster input lag", which isn't noticeable. They claim better viewing angles. First off More of a SHIT picture doesn't make it better. Second you DO NOT sit closer than 5-6 feet with a TV that big. You will get neck problems and eye issues. So viewing angles head on will not matter. I mean SERIOUSLY did you SEE the black uniformity and local dimming and DSE? Why the HELL would anyone pick that for a PC monitor.. 1440P doesn't matter when games have resolution scaling. You would always keep your PC monitor AT NATIVE resolution or it will be a blurry mess. These guys are clueless. DSE would also be bad on a monitor with a lot of white screens/pages. Low contrast ratio would be worse for legibility of text and overall Picture IQ..
It really isn't - the Samsung can't even do decent blacks which is the starting point of any "professional" reviews. This head to head vastly overplays the Samsung for no apparent reason.

Bought the Samsung last month. The Q70. Worked great, for 13 days. Woke up on day 14 with 6 red dots near the bottom. Coming from those red dots were a vertical white line and and horizontal white line. Thankfully I was within the 15 day return period. Got the Sony instead.
In the UK 🇬🇧, the Samsung Q80A 50” and 85” tv’s still use VA panels. The Samsung 50” Q80A QLED VA panel is rated at 3600, whereas the Sony 50” X90J OLED VA panel is rated at 5600,, almost double the rate of the Samsung. Despite this, the complete lack of VRR within the Sony product (and the common perception that Sony have been basically lying to their customers re: VRR developments), caused me to buy the Samsung product over the Sony here in the UK 🇬🇧. Had I been living in the USA 🇺🇸, because the US rating of the Samsung tv is so poor (1449 against Sony’s 5600), and the Sony product lacks any form of VRR, I would have bought neither and gone for the LG, taking the Bucks 💵 I would have saved to buy a decent Sound Bar.
Still Samsung is the best , look fireworks is laggy in X90J , local dimming is bright because the display system is bright , unlike X90J which is dark always
Seriously this isn't even a competition. The X90J is better in every single aspect. Come on Rtings... Starting to lose faith in you guys. No the QN80A isn't better at anything. Nothing matters if it has THAT shitty contrast ratio and black uniformity. The color volume makes up for the lack of color gamut that you see. But in the end it's not just about static numbers. It's about practical image quality. The X90J is simple way better.
For the purposes of our scale, we consider a .5 difference in score to be significant. When looking at the Mixed Usage score difference of .4 between the two TVs, you're right that the X90J is the better TV overall! If you've got any feedback about our scores or how we weigh certain aspects, please let us know and we will make sure the Test Dev team sees it! :)

@Ronald Trump Yes they are important. Some of the new and expensive Qned from LG with MiniLED might help if they still use IPS panel to make the blacks much better. But IPS panels are not good for contrast which is important. They have wider viewing angles but that can be had on VA panels as well when they do optical layers on them. The X90J should be 1200 for 55".. It's a good TV. It is certainly WAY WAY better than LG Nano. That is a guarantee.
Great Review, I was about to buy the samsung Q80A but I'm definitely leaning towards the sony x90j after seeing this review! P.S. Never listen to a Bestbuy salesman!
Can't justify either of these. Sony has been stringing people along with VRR for over a year now, and Samsung's asinine decision to continue to not support Dolby Vision are both dealbreakers for someone playing on a Series X.
You did a nice job with this review. I just happened to be at the store today making comparisons. My main use would be sports . While I appreciate the wider viewing angle on the Samsung the dirty screen effect concerns me. I watched the Samsung when an NFL game was on. Beautiful picture indeed. I would suspect the dirty screen effect might show up more during a hockey game but there was no sign of it on football. By the same token the Sony also looked very good on the Football game. Seeing these TVs in person is big. I suspect the Sony might have an edge in the reliability department. Too many choices out there lol. Thank you for this review.
How can you determine which panel your TV has? I ordered a Q75Q8BA from CostCo and have read conflicting theories on that naming convention. Some say that the "BA" is the Q80T from 2020 that has been repackaged as a 2021, while others disagree. I'm hoping to get the 2020 model as that has the VA panel but I can't seem to figure out where to look.
Thank you for the great video. Watching this in March 2022 and I want to replace my almost 10 year old LG 47LM615S, I assume that both TVs will be a huge improvement over what I have now. I just wonder how relevant Dolby Vision support really is compared to HDR10 and HDR10+ ... Right now my old, trustworthy LG has none of all those features, it even is edge-lit. For someone with the following use-case, does anyone of you have a suggestion what to choose, maybe even a completely different brand? 30% TV, 40% streaming content (Netflix, Prime), 20% Gaming, 10% Sports. Console right now is Xbox One X, but will be upgraded to Series X this year and sooner or later there will also be a PS5. Not playing competetively, just for fun, maybe coop multiplayer. Never used the game mode on my old LG anyways. Also, what can be said about the support of the software? I tend to keep my TV for a long time and don't want to be forced into buying a set-top box after 3 years just because Tizen or Google TV or whatever system is being dumped by its company. This is somewhat looking into the crystal ball, but how did companies handle this in the past? My old LG is basically just a big screen without any smart functions. I can do everything via the Xbox, but having the apps natively in the TV is nice.
I recently purchased the Q80A and I’m trying to decide where to return it. And exchange it for the QN85A that was sold out when I purchased the Q80A. But has recently come back in stock is it worth going through the trouble? Is there a big difference between these 2 models?
Will you be testing the VA panel versions of the Q80A?. Would really like to see the difference it makes in a direct comparison, especially with the firework twirling video.
We have a Q80A 85" on display at my store and it's VA screen is obviously way better - though poor off axis. Samsungs in built demo us awful for the videophile though - wildly blue shifted and over saturated. Sony's 2021 demo on the x90 is far superior.
@@andreydavydov6417 So? Your clarification doesn’t make any sense, LOL. Not a Sony’s fault if Scamsung decided to equip a 1400$ TV with a crappy IPS panel. @@petrolhead9123 sure when it comes to performance the Ferrari is obviously more powerful but Hyundai is much more reliable, what I'm trying to say is there is always pros and cons with everything. However I do agree with you Sony is much better than Samsung especially for picture quality.
@@petrolhead9123 Q80T was a decent TV. Q80A isn't. Seems like Samsung made a decision to force people to move up to their QN MiniLED series if they want something decent. Agree it's a garbage move, but feel like they're doing it to make the MiniLEDs look clearly better side by side.
It seems the X90J is even better than this year's Sony. I'm getting one, the price is down quite a bit, and it's still the best mid-range TV. I had about an hour crash-course with a TV tech guy, side by side, just turning the TVs on with the white logos on the black background, you can see the very little bleaching on the Sony, in comparison to the Samsung and LG. It was a clear indicator of what was to come. The colors are more true in the Sony, nothing is crushed, you see details on the shadows the other's can't even display. And the cherry on top, the TV tech guy had a pen with several videos, some with the crappiest frame rate and resolution. The Sony processing engine was a sight to behold, none of the other TVs was able to deal with that awfull sample video, it was a video from a moving car filming the sidewalk, the Sony did some witchcraft and suddenly you could see the store's names and the people's faces. It's all about what frames the TV inserts in between the original frames. Testing then side by side was an eye opener, I know which one I'll be taking home.
I just got an X90J for 700 euros. You know it's serious when you go through the menus and see the IMAX settings. This TV is a beast, the contrast and the deep blacks, unmatchable. I recall a review on which the guy stated that he tried his favourite movie on the Sony, and for the first time he saw something that was hidding in the shadows, it wasn't relevant to the movie, but he felt like he was "robbed" of something because he never saw it in the previous viewings. You can see it on this video, can you notice the weeds growing on the left train track, or the railing on that small building on the left? Better details in shadows and deeper blacks, both things are done amazingly because they don't even interfere with one another, it's really good.
People do make tv purchase based on size of tv stands. I'm in that dilemma right now. The reason is if you buy bigger size 📺 than what you had , you don't have to get bigger tv table .
Great job. I love al the detail. I’ve been using your site to look for a newer TV and it’s so detailed. I love that I can trust your rating when making a purchase.
Couple honest criticisms here. With how long 4K TVs have been out, it's time that you have a rating for upscaling. The biggest part of Sony's R&D is upscaling. Watching a 720p sports broadcast looks better on Sony TVs every single time compared to equally priced Samsungs. Also, picking VRR support as important for gaming but not picking Dolby Vision as important for HDR Movies is an unfair handicap on the Sony. Working in the industry, I would say Dolby Vision is just as (if not, more) important for HDR as VRR is for gaming.
@@RTINGSdotcom very nice review, it looks like a slightly tweaked h9g with the included gaming stuff that was missing lol other then that it’s damn near identical
I just purchased the Samsung Q80A 55 inch because of the stand and the longevity of my previous Samsung (11 Years). Couldn’t really give a toss about the other crap they all give a good picture, and measuring picture quality with such precision is in my case pointless - but your review was still interesting.
comparisons between two similar price points does give you a good idea, critiques on the X90J cropped up on "U Tube" spontaneously after I purchased one (without researching it)
SONY has finally stepped up the plate and dominated 2021 towards end of year. LG was crushing with the C1 and G1 series for OLED. However, since both Samsung and Sony have worked together back again to make the chipset and display panel, SONY BRAVIA AJ90 has beaten LG’s C1 and G1 OLED. Panasonic LZ2000 OLED is still king but is only available in Europe and Asia. Very sad.

Can you please share a comparison of Samsung QN90A vs Sony X90J. What's the internal memory. Does QN90A allow installation of new apps from play store?
Good comparison of two compromised TV's. I still believe (and will keep saying so) that you should be offering a more critical opinion of the performance of all the models you review. In short, your too nice! It's clear to me that neither of these models offer enough value for money compared to last years efforts.
What is the best 4K LED TV that has Dolby Vision? Is it upcoming Sony X95J? Money is not the issue, so do not care for the best value, just want the best. OLED is good, I have CX in a bedroom. Now need a LED TV for the living room.
You might as well and get last years Z8H. It’s 8K and it’s close enough in price with the recent price drop to everything Other premium LED set coming out this year.
@@bherbo3943 Does the Z8H have HDMI 2.1 and 4K 120Hz? That is a factor. Granted for just movies it would be fantastic. Also if money is not an issue I would say he should go for the Sony Z9J this year. Yes it's 8K but it will blow anything away.
@@loki76 yeah you’re right the Z9J. If money really isn’t an issue then that’s really the way to go lmao. But yeah the Z8H has HMDI 2.1 but unfortunately only for 1 port. And I’m 99% sure it’s 120hz.
Hi Gabriel! As far as we're aware, only the 85" and 50" variants of the Q80A have a VA panel. We would expect to see better contrast and black uniformity on those variants at the expense of the viewing angles.
Earlier today, and based on my conclusion from the RTINGS, I have received my QN94A Really happy about it. Especially the build quality really stands out from the moment you take it out of the box! And image quality is superb too. I am really happy I went for the Samsung over the Sony (X92J) in the end I just need your opinion once again, this time, regarding proper use My main usage of this TV is to watch UHD content, which I playback from my laptop, and via a high quality HDMI (2.1) cable (Oehlbach Flex Evolution) My question is - should I leave the cable permanently connected to the TV - and just plug it in the laptop, whenever I want to watch content (usually Blu-Ray) I am concerned that taking out / plugging in the cable consistently, could wear out the HDMI port on the TV over time. I have also read on few occasions (for the QN90A model), that some HDMI port went faulty after some time. I don't know if that was due to improper use - or if the QN90A has a defect/weakness on that respect (I presume the HDMI implementation is identical on both QN90A and QN94A variants) Also, when I connect the TV and the laptop via HDMI - is it a good practice to do the physical cable connection whilst both are turned off? Or it doesn't matter? I am worried about static electricity. On my previous TV, sometimes, when connecting the HDMI cable, there was a short 'spike' whilst plugging the cable into the port. I don't know what impact this may have on the longevity of my new TV - I just want to ensure that I don't do anything stupid from my side I am already using an AVR to stabilize the voltage input to the TV and the laptop, but as mentioned above, I m looking for some good practices here, so that I can continue to enjoy this TV for years to come. I could of course use something like the Chromecast Ultra (??), to cast content to the TV, without ever having any physical connection between the two, so in that case all of my concerns would be gone. But I m not sure the quality will be quite the same as with that HDMI cable..
Hey Jason, Based on the information you provided, it seems like the easiest answer is 'whatever's most convenient for you'. If it's easier to leave it plugged into the TV, that's fine. If you prefer to remove it and plug it in when you want to use it, that's also fine. Same goes with plugging in the cables. If you prefer to err on the side of caution and plug it in when both devices are turned off, that's okay, but if not, that's also okay. As for the chromecast, the quality should be pretty much the same. The only thing that could change is if your TV was only able to remove judder from native apps and not external devices (though that isn't the case here).
@@RTINGSdotcom So in other words, from your experience, the HDMI ports are not easily damaged from constant use (taking into assumption that I plug in/out the cables carefully). However, I d prefer to just leave the cable on the TV permanently, and just let the laptop take the abuse by pluging it in/out Also, regarding what's the 'order of power', I think the best is to have both TV and laptop turned on, because that way, the TV recognizes the input source from the moment I plug in the HDMI into the laptop. Before disconnecting the laptop though, I would switch back to another source (e.g. TV), as to not abruptly change it by just removing the cable. I don't know if all these will have a positive impact in the long term, but I m not losing anything by adhering to them As for the Chromecast (Ultra), it says it can do 4K60, which is good enough for me, but it seems that the latest Chromecast with Google TV, doesn't offer the option to 'cast' from a laptop/PC screen - which is precisely what I want (only via tablet/mobile, Android OS). Which kind of makes only the Chromecast Ultra applicable to me. And Chromecast Ultra is getting hard to find now...
So the two best TVs we've tested so far for those uses would the the QN90A (for a brighter room) and the LG C1 (for a dark room). The reason we pick the LG C1 over the Sony A90J is because they perform very similarly, but the C1 supports all HDMI 2.1 features including VRR, which the Sony doesn't.
"we do not think anybody will make a decision based on the size of the stand" you are wrong, I did, I need a TV that fit on my TV unit and the screens with legs on the outer edge would not work. Wall mounting would not work for me due to my living room layout.
Same issue for me. Furthermore I have to rotate the TV on the entertainment center. I'm looking at an aftermarket VESA rotating stand as a fix. Sony "deficiency" in this regard disappears.
was thinking about getting a 85 inch Q80A to replace my 65 Sony 900E because I wanted a larger screen to watch Star Wars type films, since I only watch head on and in a dark room...this video helped me decide not to buy the Samsung and just keep my Sony 900E for now
What is the equivalent model for samsung Q80A on LG ? I want to buy a tv and i almost buy the samsung Q80A but after see this video make me stop and ask if it would be a good buy.
In terms of price and performance, there isn't really a comparable LG TV. LG's OLED TVs are better in comparison but also a bit more expensive. Price wise, the LG NANO90 is probably the closest. Another alternative to consider too is the Sony X90J.
Generally, we suggest the X90J if you're most concerned about overall picture quality. The VA panel on the Sony gives it a much higher contrast ratio, while the IPS-like panel of the Q80A has wider viewing angles at the expense of the contrast.
A few people have found our spider charts a bit confusing, so just to clarify - the scores on the spider charts are for the corresponding usage rating (eg. TV Shows, Movies, etc), not for a specific test.

Samsung should be embarrassed, there are 5 and 6 hundred dollar tvs that have better uniformity and definitely better contrast.
And which TVs are those?

@@mrbungle589 OK thanks. Yes even I hate IPS panels due to their low contrast. It's not fun to watch. Yes the only benefit they have is better viewing angles.
@@lewisevander Viewing angles are one of the few reason LG is winning against Samsung in my country in budget range.
I feel like Samsung put IPS/ADS panels in the Q line so they would look worse next to the new (and more expensive) miniLED QN models. Upsell strategy. Q80T with conventional FALD scored almost the same as the midtier QN series.
Lack of Dolby vision is a huge setback for Samsung imo.
Two high-performance TVs, but having to choose I would not even think about it for a second, in the tv world Sony is number one. My point of view is those who disagree never had a Sony in their life. Again, that's my opinion.

Sony appears superior to the Samsung and a clear choice if you sit in front of your TV. Looking forward to the X95J release.
I chose between Samsung Q8 vs Sony X91j I with the Sony. The blacks are amazing the colors do pop (not as bright tho). But the picture on the Sony looks better. It’s amazing out the box.
This is the Best Side by side comparison 👍
Love my Sony x90j can't wait to get the PS5 the brightness is awesome and sound....

Moving to IPS was a huge mistake for Samsung. I hope this is the only year that they ever sell a non-VA QLED.
@@adriancarter2863 In Europe, all Q80A have a VA panel regardless of size.

Can't justify either of these. Sony has been stringing people along with VRR for over a year now, and Samsung's asinine decision to continue to not support Dolby Vision are both dealbreakers for someone playing on a Series X.

Great review with a structured comparison. Helped me while I'm right in the middle of comparing the models to buy. Appreciate it 👍
You did a nice job with this review.
Damn, Samsung's game mode looks awful.
Samsung TVs loses alot of image quality in gaming mode, to keep the latency down.

@@majupaulthomas Yup.
How do you like it so far?

The new XR processor is AMAZING in the A90j! Plus it will be available in an 83" this year.

Review the 85” vs the QN90A if they both use VA panels the difference should be negligible.
awesome review but why you didnt compare 65'' so we can see performance of both on va panels? would be more accurate.
Hi Gabriel! As far as we're aware, only the 85" and 50" variants of the Q80A have a VA panel. We would expect to see better contrast and black uniformity on those variants at the expense of the viewing angles.
Earlier today, and based on my conclusion from the RTINGS, I have received my QN94A
Really happy about it. Especially the build quality really stands out from the moment you take it out of the box! And image quality is superb too. I am really happy I went for the Samsung over the Sony (X92J) in the end
I just need your opinion once again, this time, regarding proper use
My main usage of this TV is to watch UHD content, which I playback from my laptop, and via a high quality HDMI (2.1) cable (Oehlbach Flex Evolution)
My question is - should I leave the cable permanently connected to the TV - and just plug it in the laptop, whenever I want to watch content (usually Blu-Ray)
I am concerned that taking out / plugging in the cable consistently, could wear out the HDMI port on the TV over time. I have also read on few occasions (for the QN90A model), that some HDMI port went faulty after some time. I don't know if that was due to improper use - or if the QN90A has a defect/weakness on that respect (I presume the HDMI implementation is identical on both QN90A and QN94A variants)
Also, when I connect the TV and the laptop via HDMI - is it a good practice to do the physical cable connection whilst both are turned off? Or it doesn't matter?
I am worried about static electricity. On my previous TV, sometimes, when connecting the HDMI cable, there was a short 'spike' whilst plugging the cable into the port. I don't know what impact this may have on the longevity of my new TV - I just want to ensure that I don't do anything stupid from my side
I am already using an AVR to stabilize the voltage input to the TV and the laptop, but as mentioned above, I m looking for some good practices here, so that I can continue to enjoy this TV for years to come. I could of course use something like the Chromecast Ultra (??), to cast content to the TV, without ever having any physical connection between the two, so in that case all of my concerns would be gone. But I m not sure the quality will be quite the same as with that HDMI cable..
Hey Jason,
Based on the information you provided, it seems like the easiest answer is 'whatever's most convenient for you'.
However, I d prefer to just leave the cable on the TV permanently, and just let the laptop take the abuse by pluging it in/out
Also, regarding what's the 'order of power', I think the best is to have both TV and laptop turned on, because that way, the TV recognizes the input source from the moment I plug in the HDMI into the laptop. Before disconnecting the laptop though, I would switch back to another source (e.g. TV), as to not abruptly change it by just removing the cable. I don't know if all these will have a positive impact in the long term, but I m not losing anything by adhering to them
As for the Chromecast (Ultra), it says it can do 4K60, which is good enough for me, but it seems that the latest Chromecast with Google TV, doesn't offer the option to 'cast' from a laptop/PC screen - which is precisely what I want (only via tablet/mobile, Android OS). Which kind of makes only the Chromecast Ultra applicable to me. And Chromecast Ultra is getting hard to find now...
What’s the best Samsung tv for this year for gaming and movies in dark and light?

Sony "deficiency" in this regard disappears.
was thinking about getting a 85 inch Q80A to replace my 65 Sony 900E because I wanted a larger screen to watch Star Wars type films, since I only watch head on and in a dark room...this video helped me decide not to buy the Samsung and just keep my Sony 900E for now
Buy 75inch x90j
Just bought Q80A. Should I change for X90J?

@@aslan2730 whats better at the x90j? I dont know If x90j or q80a..
Thank u for an excellent comparison .
Whats the best one for watching RUclips content ?
Generally, we suggest the X90J if you're most concerned about overall picture quality. The VA panel on the Sony gives it a much higher contrast ratio, while the IPS-like panel of the Q80A has wider viewing angles at the expense of the contrast.
