Great video Andy & Sarah! I always assumed boiling water was for hygiene - the ancients, who were so skilled in ancient medicine, certainly would have discovered that boiling water before drinking it was a healthy thing to do considering the conditions of those times.
Thanks for breaking the sentences down and for including the sentence structure. Very helpful. I recommend your lessons to everyone learning Mandarin! 😊

This is an interesting topic Andy and to be honest I was surprised when I was visiting China for the first time and the waiter brought a jug of boiling water to me! The Greek mothers in the contrary with the Chinese mothers used to saying: don't drink hot water because you will throw up :D To be honest even though in Greece where the temperatures at summer are reaching 35+ C we are drinking ice cold water in the Arabian countries they are always drinking hot tea and they must have reasons for that I suppose. But about China I have a different opinion which could be supplementary to your opinion. First of all in Greece we have traditional medicin for thousands of years like you and even though we have not traditional doctors any more we use many medicinal plants everyday at home. So when we are sick our mothers are offering to us instead of hot water, hot drinks like your tea which we call teas in general. In Greece we have "greek mountain tea", sage, thyme, rosmary and some other plants that belongs to the same family (Labiatae) and have a unique characteristic. They have antibiotic properties and this is scientifically proven as I know as an agronomist. Similar characteristics has the chamomilla which we also drink as tea. We consume a lot of chinese tea too which has the positive characteristics of the hot water and helps hydration, important when we have fever. The chinese tea has not antibiotic properties but it has antioxidants which prolong life as we know. But why the Chinese have the habit of drinking hot water? I think that there is a reason for that comming from ancient times. The biggest problem of our ancestor was not only to have drinking water in their cities and towns but also to have safe to drink water. And here are the different solutions that the Europeans and the Chinese had found. In China they used the simple solution of boiling the drinking water and killing this way microbes and other micro organisms that were dangerous for their health. By boiling tea leaves they were making hot water more tasty and better for health. In the contrary, in Europe, the people found another solution. They were adding small quantities of alcohol! It is well known that in the ancient Greek symposiums (=drinking together) they we consuming big quantities of wine without to became drunk. The reason is that the wine was diluted in water. The alcohol is toxic for the liver, but after so many centuries of consuption the European liver involved to tolarate it. In the contrary, according to studies, 50% of Chinese people have alcohol intolerance! Thank you very much for the informations that gave to us about the Chinese culture. If you like I can send you Greek mountain tea to taste it. It is very aromatic and has nice taste.
