Welcome back to Bad D&D Movies, a series in which I take a look at films of questionable quality that made use of the Dungeons & Dragons license. Next up on our list is 2005’s made-for-TV, Dungeons & Dragons 2: Wrath of the Dragon God. This is actually a direct sequel to the 2000 disaster I covered last time, set in the same universe and seeing the return of Bruce Payne as Damodar.
It was made on a much lower budget, and although it’s fair to say that it is superior to its predecessor in many respects, because it takes itself and its story far more seriously, so there’s fewer outright “funny-bad” moments.
There’s some cheese. But it’s more stale this time.
Disclaimer: GameOils is a parody, and not a real product available for purchase. That’s the joke.

The biggest annoyance I had with this movie, is that they bragged about how much they studied the actual source material, and then they had the black dragon breath FIRE. All their bragging went out the window at that glaring over sight. At least if the fire had been photo shopped green, then they would've been paying attention.

Fun thing, in case of Falazure, he is not a black dragon, but a dragon deity who merely takes shape of typically a white, silver or black dragon made out of "undeath and pure shadow" and like the rest of the draconic pantheon that isnt of lesser deity status, he can use any breath weapon among the dragons that can follow him (not that he would as breath weapons other than in tiamats case for obvious reason share cooldown/time between uses, as the natural breath of their avatar is always the strongest).

The Castlevania Netflix series already has a lot of D&D energy, so an animated adaptation of Curse of Strahd shouldn't be too hard to get right, provided it at least had a decent writer.
I reckon an animated series based on Tomb of Annihilation would be a lot of fun, kind of like a more mature Adventure Time. Pendleton Ward, the creator of Adventure Time, actually contributed a lot to Tomb of Annihilation, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch either.

It wolud probably give a bette result indeed. But I think there might be something with licensing that explain why it never happen before. The basic right to DnD isn't that expensive so small studio can make money with a cheap movie that appeal to fanboys. Doing a Curse of Stradh or other modules would probably be way more expensive because they need the rights to DnD AND the rights to the storie they want to adapt, for which they have to pay someone to turn it into a movie script anyway. Why spend that money when you can have your writer do a generic story that would bring about the same amount of money.

I always felt that D&D has 2 aspects to it that you would have to show, in order to catch it's true spirit. The First is obviously the game /adventure itself which is easy to make, but difficult to do well. the second is the players/table, because so much of what makes D&D memorable are the people you share it with. Closest thing Hollywood has managed successfully is "The Princess Bride", and maybe "The Neverending Story" because they both show the reader and the story. Though there is a small group that has done it quite successfully on youtube. "The Gamers: Dorkness Rising" is probably the best thing we will ever get to a D&D movie.

How hard is it to record a few games of D&D that start with all new characters, decide which is most entertaining, convert it into a script, and add some flair? Hell, if you are going cheesy, you could just steal the OutsideXbox adventures, the fact that the players are clueless about how they are supposed to play means the adventure tends to go off the rails in a way that would ensure the film was unpredictable (unless you watch OXbox).

Wait, why'd the Wizard cast Smite? Isn't that a Paladin spell? Also the main point of Melora's arc is that she seeks to combine Arcane and Divine Magic together... but couldn't she just multiclass into Cleric then? I know that's probably not exactly what she'd want but still, it's at least something.

    • @calemr
      @calemr 4 года назад +1

I've played a couple mystic Theurges in my time.
Mixing arcane and divine usually isn't worth it. Too many main stats, and you're still casting 1 spell per turn. You're just being a not as good wizard or not as good cleric each turn.
But it sure is thematic for a cleric of a god of magic.

    • @chrisbaker8533

she doesn't actually cast "smite" she's using a "Ring of the ram", the activation word just happens to be Smite.
As far as the multi-classing, i'd have to double check the 3.0 rules(what this is based on) but that's pretty much what she is at the end.
Depending on how much of a prick the DM wants to be, multi-classing can be a major PIA and potentially an adventure unto itself. Kinda like what she does in the movie.

I think the main downfall of the D&D movies from their inception is that they are based off of the PHB/prewritten adventures rather than any real campaign. The material in those books is supposed to be bare bones so that DMs and players can build onto it. So then if you just take that at face value you’re just gonna get some boring, lifeless, half baked characters in a generic world that has tons of holes that were meant to be filled by a DM but weren’t.

It has a certain level of charm. I like it. Cheese and all
