THE NEIGHBORS - Tommy Wiseau's Awful Sitcom | Cynical Reviews

- It's bad. But not funny bad.
In his first creative endeavour since the release of The Room, Tommy Wiseau brought us a sitcom called The Neighbors (2015). Unfortunately, it has none of the unintentional hilarity of the cult classic that made him famous, and is instead a nauseating test of endurance, akin to trying to scrape out one’s eyeballs with a paperclip. Words can hardly encapsulate its awfulness. But I thought I’d try.
Oh Tommy. Tommy. Wherefore art thou are you Tommy?

EDIT: In response to this video being demonitised, I've set up my Patreon page: www.patreon.com/CynicalReviews If you liked the video and want to support my channel, please consider becoming a Patron.
If you're not a fan of Patreon, you can throw me a tip via PayPal: paypal.me/cynicalreviews Over 70 hours of work went into this, so it's annoying when RUclips won't let you make anything for it. I'm setting up a Patreon soon.
First off, a warning: the audio of The Neighbors is all over the place, and is sometimes unbearably loud, but (with two exceptions) I have not adjusted it because I wanted to convey just how bad it really is. My own narration may vary a bit as well - I recorded it over three days before trying to equalise it, so if any of it sounds off, that's why.
Once again, apologies for the long wait, but I hope this video made it worthwhile. The next video I'll put out will be the face reveal, and then while I'm trying to decide what crappy Netflix film to review, I'll get started on ripping apart The Predator.
CORRECTION: I said there were seven episodes of The Neighbors, but this was based on a misreading of the IMDB entry. There are in fact only six. Not that that ultimately makes any difference.
Has it? Cause I’m seeing ads on the video
man so sad, RUclips really is commited to kill it plateform..hope you'll get it sorted out. Great 12 first minutes of video though :)
Sent you a fiver :) sorry it's been a bit overdue, I very very rarely donate money (except for a few choice charities at Christmas) so it's not a habit of mine!
@@GigaChadh976 At the moment it has "limited or no ads", because far fewer advertisers are willing to have their content play on 'demonetised' videos. So even if you do see some ads, overall it does severely impact the potential revenue.
Fuck youtube why do they never realize that people can say bad words and that shit fuck those guys fuck them
I'm convinced Tommy is an Alien sent to earth to study what it means to be human
A real live Invader Zim.
Oh, come on! Even Marvin the Martian is less spacey than this guy! XD
Him and Neil Breen.
He's still here. Must be taking him a while.
Well, The Room: the game confirms that.
You know, I legit think Tommy Wiseau is able fund these movies because he’s secretly the most successful drug kingpin on planet earth and this is all an elaborate persona.
Maybe Tommy is vampire.
Sorry for the 2year late reply, but there is a theory that tommy wiseau is actually DB cooper
You know films are pretty good ways to launder money, after all, coming up with ways to boost the budget are pretty easy.
You joke but I 1000% believe this
This TV show is clearly just money laundering scheme
It furthers the idea that Tommy knows nothing about women or humans in general
Indeed.
Tommy would come off as incredibly sexist if he didn't have ridiculous nativity about him.
In the Disaster Artist book Greg Sestero said that they hired and fired loads of actresses who were going to play Lisa because Tommy was trying to find an impossibly beautiful woman to play the part and none of the women he hired could have lived up to his unrealistic standards. He made fun of Julliette Danielle the actress who eventually played Lisa for having pimples as well.
Are we SURE he is not some shapeshifter preparing an uprising of his species?
@@Xehanort10 he also demanded the women in the auditions make out with him for 10 mins
I hate _The Neighbors_ and I've only seen it in this video.
Don't blame you at all.
@@CynicalReviews Even 10 seconds makes my head hurt. Sorry I have to stop watching this.
This shit looks hilarious!
exactly
@@Anacone qqqqq
Trying to capitalize off of a movie that was unintentional genius in term of entertainment doesn't work. They even tried to do that with giving him a let's play series of Dark Souls.
Exactly.
@@CynicalReviews Which is why Sestero's movie worked. It wasn't trying to be self-aware or intentionally bad, it was simply a story to be told, with Wiseau as an eccentric character...and it sincerely is the best performance both of them ever gave.
Did he finish it?
Goddamn, there was so much cringe here that I literally became self aware of how much my face was contorting at one point... Oof
"not a money bank"
brutal
Really?
Slut shaming is always fun. Especially since he attacked that swiped creator for it. Because being self aware is so not 2021.
The transition scene is pure gold, and it will be in my nightmares forever.
It's fantastic to have you back again CJ!
I could have spent the entire episode ranting about it. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to make this video.
And thanks!
That song will play in my nightmares, on a loop, forever.
Forever.
I laughed for like 15 minutes when I first saw the transition scene. Comedy gold!!!😂😂
I very nearly purchased some Tommy Wiseau underwear a while ago. His website was so piss poor that it made me reconsider, I’m fairly certain the product would have never turned up.
Great to have you back anyway, CJ. Thanks for enduring this shitshow so that we don’t have to :)
Shit show!? This series is a masterpiece
My friend actually ordered a pair of those 😝
"Pizza boy- no, not that one."
My friend ordered and it arrived. With a really poorly written card that said "love is blind".
My boyfriend has Wiseau underwear. (And hey, my name is CJ!)
*various shoe squeaking noises in long dragged out slightly awkward fight*
Impeccable comedy, I am astounded.
To be honest, I can't even tell whether it was meant to be funny or not.
@@CynicalReviews I think you just managed to summarize this entire show in one sentence lmao
It's made for the 2006 - 2009 era when randomly yelling was funny.
Will Ferrell has made a whole career out of that principle
My theory about "The Neighbors", is that it, just like "The Room", takes place in a mental hospital, that is a simulation of a normal building, so that the mental patients can get used to normal life and become productive citizens. To no avail...
that actually sounds interesting
You did this sober? I want to get hammered just watching this! Thanks for putting yourself through this for us. You're a diamond CJ
I still don't know. I regret it immensely.
And thanks!
Never leave us again, puppy man.
I'll try.

My Lord, my eardrums. My poor, poor eardrums. The AUDIO PEAKS, TOMMY. WHY?
Man, I can remember watching The Room for the first time just a little over a year ago at this point. Truly a magical experience but what you said about him trying to recreate that magic is right. It just doesn't work because it's just not real. In particular, I watched one of the Best F(r)iends movies last year and man, it was sad to watch. I didn't even know this was a thing but holy God was it painful to see in just about every single regard. Guess we'll never see Tommy remake that magic but honestly, considering the stories told about him, that might be for the best.
My thoughts exactly. Trying to recreate what made The Room such an unforgettable experience is never going to work.
@@CynicalReviews That's the same with many so-bad-they're-good movies. The only one that is even remotely close is Birdemic 2 IMO, but that's because the original director of both movies is so ignorant to the bad quality of the first movie that it's kind of adorable. While I think Birdemic 2 is more self aware, when you learn about the fact that Birdemic 2 was supposed to be a bit of a documentary of the director's life, it makes the movie a little more endearing. That's just me though.
Fortunately I’m listening on my phone through my Bluetooth-equipped hearing aids. At some point in this chain my ears are protected from extreme volume...
I now understand where Venom's weakness to these types of sounds came from. XD
Wasn't Best F[r]iends written by Greg?
this does just seem like a porno...that never actually starts
You know, that moment where Tommy grabs a girl by the throat asking her: "can I strangle you a bit?"...
his kinky side was showing.😬🥴
The Room: "Follow your dreams! You just need a couple million in the bank from all your shady business practices!"
Tommy is honestly a one-trick pony. A hilarious one-trick pony but the novelty wore off after his self-awareness.
Is he self aware though? It comes off less as knowing he sucks and trying to make things that are intentionally bad and more like a narcissist who thinks everything he makes is good just because it was him who made it.
I don't know about that xeahnort. A lot of his interviews suggest other wise.
The 4th wall breaking suicide talk is honestly a genius way to do something like that, but someone besides Tommy would've handled it much better
You have a point, actually. Also, this would fit in a more serious movie, not in a sitcom, even a good one.
Even when James Franco is playing a bad actor, being a bad actor, he's still a way better actor.
HEY MAN....don't mess with samurai cop 2, that's a classic.
Oh it is. I wouldn't say a bad word about it.
Part 1 is better if that makes sense lol
About time we saw Johnny and Joe Marshall face to face.
We all saw who the real samurai was.
The best kind of bad is Passion Project Bad- when someone makes their dream movie, or a celebrity puts their name to a film they always wanted to do, or a newcomer makes something they think is going to be their magnum opus... and it crashes and burns. The Room is the perfect example of this effect. When you try to make the brown drippy lightening strike twice though...
Tommy is kind of like the inverted Ed Wood. While Wood was blissfully unaware of how bad is movies were- and thus made piles of garbage that are legendary even now- Tommy got told flat out his movie was hilari-bad and he has no talent... so he's trying to make being awful his talent, but can't pull it off.
All that said, thank you for sacrificing your sanity and eardrums for us by watching this shitshow.
According to one of his friends Tommy actually was an talented actor and businessman. You don't build a multi-million Dollar Bank account from being untalented. He had a traumatic brain injury that really messed him up though.
I don't think it messed him up that bad. He might not just have any talent in writing.
Fun fact, that Scene transition "theme" is what you hear all the time in Hell, followed by that scene of Wiseau's naked ass from The Room played on a loop.
YOUR TEARING ME APART LISA

I literally went ot search for your pornhub account after that review. :P

17:28 Clearly Tommy was trying to tap into the forbidden power of Ugandan warriors.
"THIS IS HOW WE DO ACTION IN UGANDA!"
"Everyone in Uganda knows Kung Fu!"
Wait...
He made a Sitcom!?!

That was exactly what I said to myself when I first heard about it.
My reaction to the title was “Tommy has a sitcom?!?!? Why?!?!?!”
Same.

Oh god that sound quality, my ears...
Imagine how I felt.
@@CynicalReviews editing this must have been a nightmare!
It's crazy seeing Tommy on talk shows sounding like his mind is actually present and not somewhere in outer space.
I'm only used to seeing him struggling to string together sentences.
I think the Room was a result of Tommy's madness, money and creative direction, but a lot- a *lot*- of people behind the scenes working hard to *try* to make it the best they can. (judging by the book, that is)
Without that sliver of talent, this is what you get, I think.
Good point
Should we periodically ask you about The Neighbors just to make sure the paint thinner is working?
1:34 “get some friends round”
You need friends for that
Story of my life.
As torturous as this show is, the first clip you showed is genuinely hilarious
The intro?
There was an interview out there with several of the cast members from the show. But has since disappeared. Supposedly he made them sign non disclosure agreements as he didn’t want another book written about him.
I guess anyone who's ever starred in a Wiseau production needed the money that badly. 😂😅
While trying to think of a witty comment, I just can't. I'm just in awe of the existence of this. Is Tommy Wiseau somehow on a higher level of existence than we are?
He just understands life... the same way Neil Breen does.
You gotta admire how Tommy keeps making stuff despite how much people keep criticizing him.
Honestly, even if what he makes doesn't come put very good, I still have more respect for Tommy Wisseau than for people like Uwe Boll or Derek Savage. At least Tommy's not a prick who throws a temper tantrum when people criticize his work.
I think he's a prick
Shades the guy who created Cool Cat throws a tantrum when his work is criticized?
@@Milky_Mercy He went out of his way to take negative reviews of his movie, even though they were Fair Use.

In case any of you wanted to know,
the 4th episode is titled "Black vs. Yellow"
Quality writing. 👌
“Happy 2019 everybody. I hope it’s all uphill from here” Boy, this quote did not age well.
Tommy's take on The Office. What's not to love?!
This feels like someone asked some extraterrestrial beings, who knew nothing about human culture, to make a sitcom...and then threw it in a shredder, and pieced it back as best they could.
Hi Doggy
Glad to have you back you sexy beast! Woof!
Whenever someone dies on the set of the neighbors, their soul is added to the transition scene
The, ,film The Disaster Artist left out one key element of the book: Mark only started in The Room because of financial reasons not friendship. Tommy Wiseau paid Mark an astronomical amount of money to participate in the making & staring of The Roomz
A sitcom made by Tommy Wiseau? What are you doing to us C.J.? What are you doing to yourself?
Seriously though, super glad you're back. And congrats on 100k subs, it'll be a million in no time!
it really just look like a low budget reality show ugh
Thank you for warning us about this
You're welcome.
Now, I know this is strange but watching this review I got a really interesting idea for a sitcom with a twisted twist. It starts of as "normal", in a apartment complex like the one on the movie, with a few bizarre elements made for laught, but somethings start happening that shows the apartments might not be what they seem... And are in fact a hell-like prison that all the characters are stuck in, and the management are the demons taking care of it.
You know what? Forget that, I want Too Many Cookies but as a series.
Please elaborate this is a really interesting idea
Should I say this is the Good Place? I mean, last season is gonna be up soon. Big RIP.
Only got now a notification..thanks youtube still good to have you back my love
Gotta love RUclips.
Cynical Reviews mhmh yes..
That transition scene, man... Holy fuck!!! There's a lot going on there.
The biggest problem with Tommy Wiseau is that he was effortlessly weird when filming "The Room". Then when people wanted him in their movies he started "acting" weird and it no longer worked because he was in on the joke.
It's like Leslie Nielsen. He was brilliant in the early movies like "Airplane" and "The Naked Gun" because he was so deadpan and he admitted he didn't know what made him funny. Then with all the movies that came out afterwards he started "acting" in them and mugging to the camera as if to say, "aren't I so funny?" and it was just lame.
Every scene starts like a bad porn intro 😂😂😂😂

Tommy is a vampire confirmed.
LOL I was just reading about Wisseau on Reddit and someone mentioned this sitcom...and you put up a video about it on the same day...really weird coincidence.
You have to Watch The room
Thanks for the "brace yourself" warning. I wish more video reviews did that between jarring volume changes.
wait you did this sober? damn I pity you it looks horrible. I wouldnt be able to watch it drunk let alone sober
Omg. Whyy???? I lost my mind in the transition with the dinosaur.
Happy 100,000!
ACTUALLY...!!!!!
I lived in an apartment complex where you COULD keep chickens as pets! The rule was “As long as it’s in a cage (coop) you don’t have to pay a pet deposit.” Allegedly, people did keep chickens as pets there at least three times according to my former landlord.
I got high and watched this in one sitting (not recommended). Almost died laughing... The funniest thing to me was trying to understand why and how Tommy did what he did.
Also, don't know if you noticed it, but the view count drops dramatically as the episodes go. First one has above 100k and the last one has like 4k or something :D
‘Tommy Wiseau presents,’ a sure sign of a good product
The transition shot is honestly the best thing about this show.
8:02 --- You must recognize the effort that blonde put in pronouncing "menage a trois".
I'm glad to see someone else talk about this horror.
My one and only criticism of this otherwise wonderful video: It is pronounced WIZZ-OH. His name is a warped version of "Oiseau," the French word for Bird.
Thanks for suffering CJ, so that we don't have to :D great review btw, loved your commentary as always!
You're welcome!
Dude, I am sooooo sorry that you can't press charges for watching that
I'm glad you did this instead of the Room, I enjoy you commentating on stuff that not many people have done already whereas everything about the Room that can be said probably has been.
Always love your videos keep up the good work!
Oh god. I live in LA and remember i went to a Q+A screening of the room. Remember Tommy being extremely drunk (or just his usual self) and they played an episode of the neighbors before the screening. That was one of the most painful things to sit through. After that all ended they started the movie and the movie burned off after the cancer part. 🤣🤣
4:57 HOLY SHIT, THAT’S ALEX HULT! I went to school with that guy!
I've been watching so bad they're good movies since the 80's and witnessed The Room, Birdemic, and others unfold in real time. It's kind of surreal because I'm used to bad movies being older than me. Diary of a middle-aged MiSTie :D
Reno911! is a cop sitcom that is supposed to look low quality and have crazy storylines but Reno911! is produced, acted, and edited very well. It’s a low quality-ish type of show on purpose but it’s soooo much better
The Neighbors is Tommy's way of admitting that he is an alien from the 14th dimension that has gotten stuck here and that this is how he believes that humans act after his years on earth. He is screaming "hi hoomans, I hooman too. Look how hooman I am by watching this show on how hoomans act. Vary aqqrit."
i actually cry-laughed at the end of the room. It was so dumb but Johnny blowing his brains out just made me sad.
That... that wasn't even a shotgun, that was a bloody lever action rifle. My god, he didn't even get the type of gun right!
I know right, that was the most annoying part
These are just great. Glad you're back!
I'm probably going to have tinnitus now tho as I watched this with headphones on...so much yelling!
24:31 sadly, no 😔
12:57 literally looks like a bad game's loading screen wtf lmfao
I for one love loud noises and bad writing.
Hurt me daddy.
This sitcom was covered several years ago by somebody, I forgot who. But somehow that review vanished for some reason.
Is this available on DVD? I'm ready to open my third eye to witness this plane of torment

15:04 “Maybe you want to try that line again?” I laughed 😂😂😂
The pregnant woman is the worst amateur actor out of all the actors on this show. The best actor is probably the chicken.

I saw season 1 of this and oh my goodness, it makes the Room look like Avengers Assemble. It was pretty amazing. That said, when you lament "why am I sober?" I realise I'd already poured myself a glass of wine :P So do watch with care, people.
You're finally back! Really missed your dry, sarcastic, British humor. Keep it up

I'm impressed you sat through this mess
It's a test of endurance, let me tell you.
Well this just made my day 100x better.
Aw thanks!
The thing I hate the most about this series is every time I try to find info on the OTHER sitcom called The Neighbours (which I actually enjoyed), all I get is a bombardment of Wiseau.
Okay I LOL'd at the guy saying "okay you hurt me, please leave." That was genuinely funny.
