Another unique and great vid. Love it. Simple yet, you're right, actually very effective given how those doors work. My lock on my patio doors finally broke (am replacing with oak doors so not bothered replacing) and I fitted a surface mounted lock with bolts all the way through. Smooth head of bolt on the outside and two nylon nuts on inside 👍 More vids please!!
Quick, simple and very effective. I also stick some lever style locks above and below the doors, these doors are easy targets. Hopefully seeing that big red deterrent would be enough. Thanks for sharing.
LoL, the kids and girlfriend leave stuff like that all over the place. I didn't know what it was called and had to Google "Bilibo" LOL Thanks for the comment
Great video. And yes as people keep saying you can break the glass, but this is just a added piece of security. I'm going make one. Make harder for people to break in. Also when u go out it's a visual aid so u can see if your doors are locked or not. 10 out of 10
This video might be useful to a few people, I was full of a cold when I made this so I spent ages cutting out all of the coughing and spluttering. I hope everyone has a great Sunday, please like, share and comment ;-) Of course when the girlfriend saw this her response was “what a f*cking eyesore”- I guess you can’t teach people common sense ;-) Don’t forget that I always recommend having a fully working burglar alarm, regardless of how good the locks are on your property.
Ultimate Handyman so she doesn't like your 'uni-strut', then? Is your girlfriend the girl that walked up the stairs in the squeaky stairs video, by any chance?!
No, she didn't like it when I used a piece to secure the summer house door either. I'd rather put up with her not being happy than someone breaking into the house or one of the outbuildings ;-)
Thanks, it's something that I thought about a few weeks back when I was doing the video about a broken key in a Euro cylinder, then someone asked me a few days back which is best changing the Euro cylinder or buying a pat lock, then I discovered that these types of locks are already commercially available. Thanks for the comment ;-)
You are welcome. Perhaps you could make something that fixes to the wall, near where the handle is positioned. Even something like a chain and solid fixing point would prevent the door from being opened easily!
Top video mate might give this one a go.on the subject of patio doors is there anything available that will lock patio door to the wall once opened .My kids are forever swinging them into the wall
I have an internal door with a similar problem, I fixed it by attaching a magnet to the door and a magnet to the wall, so that the magnet holds it in the open position. Thanks for the comment
Yes, I used super glue. If you get magnets that are too strong they can cause problems such as grabbing the door or breaking the bond between the magnet and door. It might be best to use a magnet and a steel plate- like the ones you get on cupboards.
Brilliant idea! Have you thought about selling these on somewhere like eBay? I would definitely have a couple off you. What are your thoughts on laminating the glass too?
You can buy them already on ebay- fave.co/2qwbPSM not sure about laminating the glass, if they are dead intent on getting in they will one way or another. We can just make it as difficult as possible for them. Thanks for the comment
Ultimate Handyman lay down a big stick between the side of the sliding door and a wall, other door. i did it for a long time and there is no way getting in from the outside unless you throw a brick through the window 😁
I don't think so, as they will normally only sell it in full lengths. Normally I buy it from a ironmongers in the next town, they sell 3 metre lengths for about £16 (if I remember rightly) Thanks for the comment
You can get it cheap on ebay sometimes, there was one guy selling it cut to length but the postage was expensive. This seller is selling 3 meters for £15.15 delivered fave.co/2haSmS0
nice idea but they could just unscrew the outside door handles and then push the spindles through causing the inside handles, spindles and the extra lock to fall to the ground and then break in just the same
John Hughes they both dont anchor to the ground because the t-astrigal which is on the inactive door is what anchors the door in the top and bottom and is only installed on the one side which ends up concealed when both of the doors are closed so there wouldnt be a way to anchor botj of the doors because both would have to be closed unless they cut a strip on the face of the door and put in flush bolts that way but it would be extremely tacky, make the active door less secure, and i think it would be less convenient because if you are constantly in and out of the door you wouldnt want the flush bolt giving out and constantly locking the door on you
Austin Anderson thats not entirely true most modern French doors will have shoot bolts on both the slave and master door leaf but become irrelevant if the cylinder is comprised. The attempt at a patlock in this video would not put off any experienced theif as most who are going to snap a cylinder will rip off at least half of the handle to get to it so it's not much more work to remove the whole thing.
My, what polite, fussy burglars you chaps must have in the UK! Here in the US, that glass door would last about twenty seconds. Your neighbors have better things to do than to stand by an open window, listening for your breaking glass.
A gun is useless if there is no one home to make use of it. While acknowledging your considerable fabrication skills, that bare glass affords no peace of mind. Better to install a full security door BEFORE your valuables walk off. i.pinimg.com/originals/a3/cc/70/a3cc70a3ba4508c20ec48d01c15a0c55.jpg
Pointless really just get a pair of mole grips on your outside handles and rip them off and watch it fall to the ground that will also give you more room to bypass your anti snap point :)
99% of the time they always smash the window so there is no deterrent Replace the toughened glass with !!! laminated glass !!! And then fit the patio door lock
I first thought about this when I made this video, as I needed to secure a door with the cylinder removed- ruclips.net/video/4mNzjkhqYk0/видео.html But then it turned out that there are already a couple of products commercially available. Thanks for the comment ;-)
Ahhh, that's to bad mate.... but try to improve this with new techniques or so and then patent it! That's how folks are doing it are around the world!! Good luck anyways and thanks for the upload.
any fully glazed door, e.g. patio door or french door or even bi-fold doors, should have , in my opinion, laminated glass. Toughened glass is for safety purposes only and serves no purpose to security. How many cars have you seen broken into through door glass? Same glass as average house door glass.....
These types of lock are not as secure as people think, the Euro cylinder can be easily snapped on some models- ruclips.net/video/2lzX5sSTbig/видео.html Burglars will always try to get in via the lock as it is the quietest way, by adding one of these locks to the inside it makes it much more difficult for the burglar, so they will probably try another property.
Quality. U should be nominated for some sort of award
As long as it's not the Darwin award ;-)

that is a fantastic peace off kit loved the video and have a lovely holiday.
Thanks ;-)

I'm thinking of some floor/ceiling locks as well.
Thanks for the comment
Great video I'm a locksmith this could come in well handy. Will be making a couple this weekend 👍

Loving the red bilibo hibernating in the garden :)

Thanks for
Sharing. That’s really useful. Any suggestions for patio doors with a single handle
You are welcome.
Perhaps you could make something that fixes to the wall, near where the handle is positioned. Even something like a chain and solid fixing point would prevent the door from being opened easily!
Looks nice and professional..!
Thanks ;-)
Fantastically useful, off to the garage to make one.
Thanks Tony ;-)

Great job ! Have a good holiday.👍
Thanks, I will do ;-)
Good job mate ! .
Thanks for the comment
Excellent video! Thanks.
You are welcome
Thanks for the comment
Great idea and video. I have just made one for myself 👍🏼
Thanks for the comment
Damn it....got the slotted unistrut delivered. Guess it will do the same job but not look as good as yours!
Slotted unistrut is useful for some applications. I'm sure it will still look fine ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Great idea, enjoy your holiday.
Barry (West Kirby, Wirral)
Thanks Barry ;-)
Easy and quiet to smash the safety glass on these doors - not sure a burglar would bother with the lock
Yes, but that makes a lot of noise. It is common for burglars to snap the lock.
Thanks for the comment
Brilliant, I made one from wood before I went on holiday but nor as nice as yours.
Thanks for the comment ;-)

Right that's a good idea how did you fix to the door super glue ?
And what strength magnets

Good idea and it's another visible deterrent that will likely make a burglar look elsewhere.
Absolutely.
Thanks for the comment
Where can you buy unistrut from? Thanks.
You can get it at most electrical wholesalers, some steel stock holders or ebay-
This seller is selling 3 meters for £15.15 delivered fave.co/2haSmS0
Thanks for making the video, I will be making this.
You are welcome
Thanks for the comment

nice, any ideas for a single sliding door version?
If the handle is close to the wall when the door is closed perhaps you could make something that fixes to the wall?
What about an upvc locking dash jammer?
Ultimate Handyman lay down a big stick between the side of the sliding door and a wall, other door. i did it for a long time and there is no way getting in from the outside unless you throw a brick through the window 😁

yes the stick would work, and also a chain or cable attached to wall around handle, thanks for the ideas guys
i like it.
Thanks for the comment
Being a DiYer could I walk into a electrical wholesalers , and buy unistrut (off cuts ).
How much should I except to pay £
I don't think so, as they will normally only sell it in full lengths.
Normally I buy it from a ironmongers in the next town, they sell 3 metre lengths for about £16 (if I remember rightly)

@@ultimatehandyman thanks Chaz. 👏👍 Always look forward to yr vids .
Ive got the same doors as you...i might have a stab at making this if i can get hold of some unistrut.
You can get it cheap on ebay sometimes, there was one guy selling it cut to length but the postage was expensive.
This seller is selling 3 meters for £15.15 delivered fave.co/2haSmS0
Thanks...another little project for me to do.
nice idea but they could just unscrew the outside door handles and then push the spindles through causing the inside handles, spindles and the extra lock to fall to the ground and then break in just the same
If you can unscrew the door handles from outside the handles have been installed the wrong way around!
Thanks for the comment
very good video
Thanks for the comment ;-)
most welcome
A very good item to deter burglars
Thanks for the comment ;-)
This seems to be a weakness of double doors. Why can't they both just anchor into the ground?
I don't think they realised how insecure Euro cylinder locks until recently.
Modern doors might be more secure- I don't know for certain.

Making extra security for doors good....... Telling everyone on RUclips your going away on holiday bad idea.
I've not said when I am going ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Ultimate Handyman 👍
Out of interest what paint and primer did you use?
I used Zinsser B.I.N (should really use Zinsser 123 but didn't have any), I then used Rusoleum painters touch.
Thanks for the comment
My, what polite, fussy burglars you chaps must have in the UK! Here in the US, that glass door would last about twenty seconds. Your neighbors have better things to do than to stand by an open window, listening for your breaking glass.
Unfortunately we are not allowed guns in the UK.
Only the military, police and criminals have them.

Thanks for the comment
I wonder if I could make one out of wood somehow
You probably could.
Do you sell these?
No, but there are lots commercially available- fave.co/34IfSxd

Laminated glass and patlock £50 amazon.
Pointless really just get a pair of mole grips on your outside handles and rip them off and watch it fall to the ground that will also give you more room to bypass your anti snap point :)

Replace the toughened glass with !!! laminated glass !!!
And then fit the patio door lock
Thanks for the comment 👍
why not just get Patio bolt locks..less work and cheaper
It's hardly going to be cheaper, than using an off-cut.
Thanks for the comment 👍
*breaks glass*
Makes lots of noise 😄
This is great but if someone wanted in they can just break the glass
Thant is correct, which is why I said that in the video, but breaking glass=noise!
Thanks for the comment
If this is your idea then you should patent your work. Otherwise someone else is going to do that and make money out of it!

unless they break the glass it self :)
I thought I mentioned that in the video ;-)
