  • Busy boat ramps are not my scene. Luckily for me, I have one of the best rivers in the west in my backyard. It seems to be hiding in plain sight, especially when the shadow of the Henry's Fork and Snake are so overpowering. The Teton is a massive watershed that has many different looks depending on where you access. Canyons mean tough times getting in and dodging nasty critters all the way down. BUT fortune favors the bold! Especially on a cheeky evening session.

We’ve been in Idaho since mid June. We’re retired and full time in our motor home. We stayed in the Island Park area for two weeks until July 5. I knew about the Teton but only through reports from fishing in the upper valley. Didn’t realize the Teton flowed into a canyon lower down. We’ll be back in Island Park again on the way south in September. I haven’t had much success in Idaho. Fished the Henry’s Fork a few times and only had one day that I caught fish and that was above island Park reservoir. Below it the dam was releasing stained water. The reservoir was full due to earlier heavy rains. Even several miles down to Mesa Falls I didn’t have any luck. Not much success on the Salmon near Stanley, Payette near Lowman, Locsha River around Wilderness Gateway and the St Joe upstream from Avery. Fish are smaller than the browns and rainbows from Colorado last summer. Probably the heat and fishing pressure and my fly fishing abilities.

Oh wow you have been everywhere and back!! All the rivers you listed are pretty pressured if my memory serves me right! If you can hike into spots, I find that the fish are much more friendly

Mike, I live in the Chicago suburbs and love to go to the Driftless area to fly fish for trout. Surfing around RUclips looking for content on Driftless fly fishing, I came upon your channel. I really enjoyed the many videos you made when you lived in Wisconsin and was a bit saddened that you moved from the area. However, I still enjoy watching the videos you are filming in the new locations that you are visiting. I just came back from a 4 day trip to Veroqua area, and watching you and your enthusiasm makes me anxious to get up there again in a few weeks. Tight lines my friend.....

That wire detects rainbows that have been implanted with an electronic locator. When the rainbow passes under it it logs the fish. Idaho is tracking rainbows in that area trying to see if they are detrimental too cutthroat populations. Hopefully I will be fishing that spot in a week or two.

Nice fish, and a nice sized rattler. At least rattlers warn you, and I find them to not be that aggressive; their cottonmouth cousins are a different story - no rattle, and very mean. If they smell fish, they'll try to get in the boat with you.

@@FLYALLSZN Yep...we've got just about every type of poisonous snake here in Louisiana. Where I fly fish in the Smokies, it isn't as bad. There are timber rattlers, but I've never seen one. However, my oldest daughter had a face-to-face encounter with a copperhead while fishing several years ago. She said she just froze; I told her that snake was probably more scared of her than she was of it. BTW - are those Yellowstone cutts?

Had to read this one a few times. Appreciate the sentiment I suppose. Context is everything. Being at the bottom of a canyon and far from immediate medical care makes a snake bite very serious. I don't abide by statistics when I step off the trail because Murphy's Law and Mother Nature have the final say.
