Its the best side of the Tetons? Successful Spring Fly Fishing Eastern Idaho

  • Safe and secure from the traffic of the East side, this lesser known slope of the Tetons has quickly become close to my heart. The heavy influence of agriculture keeps the pace rather slow, and all the folks you run into seem to be your friend. This magic corner of the greater Yellowstone ecosystem is no secret to the devoted decibels of trout, in fact, this might be Mecca to most. Mountains meet fields while rivers cut through thriving wildlife corridors. Whispers of bird sized bugs being vacuumed up by flashes of rainbow and brown give more than a few creeks on the West side the moniker of “world famous”. Fishing opportunities during the more favorable summer months can bring a lot of fanfare, but no matter how much clout is attached, Spring in this part of the world has a tendency to be a rather fickle mistress..Flowing water, well fed fish fish, and fluctuating temperatures can flop the fervor of any fly angler looking to part ways with the symptoms of cabin fever.

It's so great watching someone actually hike and travel for fish... instead of just plopping a boat and hitting the best spots.

Moved to this area 4 years ago. Finally able to fish it this year. I love eastern Idaho! Oh and that first fish you caught was a nice brookie not a brown. Just an fyi. Frost Stop is a must have burger on my way home from island park! Perfect way to end a day of fishing. Next time you’re in the area try the Buffalo river. Most beautiful river in Idaho! There may be a few people on it but it’s loaded with fish. Caught my PB 3 weeks ago. A toad of a rainbow at 18 inches and thick. Love the content! Come back soon!

Fishing in my backyard. It can be tough during the stone fly hatch with critters and gored fish but, if your willing to get off the path a bit and good timing, fishing can be magical. Good luck next time.

I didn't enjoy seeing you struggle but it's nice knowing that the struggle is real, even for people that fish very frequently. All of the struggle side of the equation certainly makes successful experiences so very sweet, and that's what I love about fishing I guess LOL!! Love your videos man. I hope you always find the support you need.

I struggle with the Henry's Fork every time I go there. I always catch good fish on the lake, but little fish on the river. Sometimes no fish on the river. Great video, Mike!

We were there this past June 3-7 saw hords of salmon flies but fishing was slow, got in a drift boat for one day in box canyon and went 14 of 15, dragging pmds and rubber legs, at the end of the day we went straight salmon flies on the surface and I got 1, still beautiful country, and I'll be there next June as well

We were there at the same time 🤣. I've been down there a bunch now. June is tough. The salmon fly hatch is kinda overrated. It's hard to time, and even if you do the fish might not cooperate. My brother, cousin, and my buddy all had a rough go in all the same areas generally, as you. Unless you are floating Henry's fork, or know a really good spot, the fish are too pressured. But, I'll tell you a secret. It's ok because very few will do it. You want those fatty 19 to 23 inchers, without crowds? Shots at bigger fish possible, and more likely in my opinion? Winter has it all. My best days are mostly in the winter. I won't even brag but if you can watch the weather and time a trip for Henry's fork area above freezing, it's totally different than the pressure of summer. The hell of it all with our June excursion is just over the divide, the Madison was on fire. I hit it on the way home for two days and caught a bunch of twenty inch rod benders, some in one of the coolest, most unique situations and spots I've ever seen. Maybe you'll find it if you poke around in the area. Keep that rod bent. 🕉️🏔️

@@FLYALLSZN for sure. Hit me up when you're in south west Montana. At the end of March early April I got a spot. One particular day I caught 7 fish in a row that were exactly 19. Many other fat 17 to 23, rainbow and cutbows, and that is the norm. If you wanted to join me to make a video I'd do it. It's roughly two hours outside of Bozeman. Usually get an air BNB and troutbum it for a few days straight. Honestly some of the best fishing days of my life.

Great video and descriptions - I'm curious about what you wade in, it's more close fitting and almost neoprene looking. Are those waders, does it have stockings attached, or are you just kind of wet wading but with underarmor type stuff on for a little warmth? It definitely looks easier to hike in than traditional waders. Thanks
