Brilliant video and very clear explanation! This helped a lot! You should be working for Garmin or your channel should be sponsored by them at least. I bought a FR 245 a week ago and I find the whole user experience for the watch very challenging. 😌

@@ChaseTheSummit I agree about staying independent from any companies. But your videos are so good. Maybe Garmin should just copy your style and make their own videos then. 😂
Awesome detailed review. Just for context, in my area in Kolkata, India - it doesn't have a lot of information because of less users (although gmaps is pretty good)
Yeah, for example - if i go choose a direction and ask for a new auto course, it says nothing found. Obviously there are many roads nearby, but very less users - so that probably matters more. But just 15km from here, i can see a few user-made courses available.
Does everything you’ve shared about the Fenix 6 apply to the Tactix Delta? I’m new to the Garmin ecosystem of watches and have noticed that no one really takes about the Delta. Does the Delta fit on your list of watches that handles full navigation? I think it does, but the general lack of mention of the Delta is confusing. Thanks.
Great content 👌 Quick question: if I just need something that will track where I'm running & show it afterwards on a map, will breadcrumb do that.. right now, on my android, I use Google fit, & it shows which roads I ran or biked on during that workout after im done Keep up the great content 👏 👌 👍
I’m definitely keeping my Fenix 6S Sapphire 🤣 I planned to put it on sale after my husband gave me a green FR745 to match his Red One, I love how lightweight 745 is compared to Fenix, I even wear it to sleep. But I will make the most out of my Fenix 6S starting now..🤣 Btw can you make a video how you keep your stats in place while switching between trackers? I found wearing 2 devices alternately make the Body Battery, Stress Level & Avr RHR not aligned.. I would like to know how you think.. Thank you!
Great video :) is there a few good budget watches with full routable maps on the watch itself instead the breadcrumbs one ? I own Amazfit Stratos 2 and im looking for an decent upgrade. Love ur stuff ! Keep it up men 😜
Great video as always! Still can't decide which watch will replace my FR645. For 745 it's price and future updates, for 945 maps and battery and for base F6 it is display and battery. I am a little bit worried about updates for FR945 and F6 as I am expecting new models this year.
Garmin is pretty good about keeping their devices relevant. For instance you can still sync a Garmin 405 to the Connect ecosystem and that watch is 10 years old! If the features of the 945/F6 suit your needs I wouldn't hesitate to purchase. After all, there's always something new around the corner. Tough call!
@@ChaseTheSummit Thx man! I have been using my fenix 3 since my AW5 "dies" after days camping in Utah. I do very much miss not bringing my phone during workouts and the HR stats. But the battery life on Garmin got me so good that I don't want to go back to AW5 even if it's repaired.FR945 definitely meets my need. But i assume once the newer edition comes out there would a price cut on the older versions? just gonna wait a bit longer then!
Hello Summit Chaser I've also enjoyed your comparison of the 745 and 945. I've been using a Suunto Ambit 3P for years but, now that they've gone app only, I want to jump ship. I'm used to breadcrumb mapping. With the watch mounted on a handlebar 'wrist', I use it mainly when cycling. I rarely wear the huge watch on my wrist, and when I do, I know it's there. That's one of the reasons why the smaller 745 is attractive to me. On the Ambit, the trail screen automatically zooms when a turn is coming up. Looking for zoom in the 745 manual, it seems that button presses are necessary for zooming. This would be inconvenient when riding. Do you know if the 745 autozooms before turns?
There's no auto-zoom but you can set your zoom level and it stays that way. Turns are also highlighted with a colored arrow to make them obvious. Hope that helps!
garmin made very good connection to strava. So you can create route on strava, and if it is highlighted, garmin automatically transfer it to courses :)
I'm using trails on my FR935 and it's ok when running. However when biking it's kinda useless in some situations. A specialy when there is some village, few thight turns then go some road. You can easily turn in wrong direction and get your self lost untill you pick smartphone and check maps. Bips are too laggy, sometimes 1-2 sec before turn. It's faaar too late. Garmin should put some work on it. For example, some light grey vector road map (maybe made of some kind of unactive generated route), just around current route so I could look on my watch and just know what turn I should skip, then turn here, there and go.
Hi. Good job, as always. Can you do a tutorial or explanation of PacePro function? And please touch the subject why you can choose whatever target pace you want on a watch but on a phone app or connect Web page you are limited to 8m42s/km min or faster. For longer runs like 100-160km this pace is for elite only
Hello mister. Nice video very informative. Im on the verge of buying a 245 music but maybe its smart to wait for a new release? If so what do you think will be released soon
I don't have any insight into the future 245 release but I wouldn't expect one to be any time soon. Possibly in the Spring? Just a guess, hope that helps!
Thanks for the excellent review on this navigation topic. If you want a watch with map navigation (no breadcrumb) for hiking but you don't need all the activity/sport data, which watch do you recommend?
The only real option is something like a Fenix 6,5plus,5x,etc... Or go with an apple watch and a specialized app for mapping like WorkOutdoors. Hope that helps!
@@ChaseTheSummit I was already afraid of that ;-) I think I prefer the Garmin 945 for its simplicity (slick design) over the Fenix series. Thanks for the recommendation.
Right now no other brand supports full, routable, offline maps... Garmin has that market cornered mainly because of their history with mapping software and navigation devices on boats and cars. The only other alternative would be something like the Apple Watch or a Wear OS device like the Suunto 7. Both offer offline maps (with certain apps) but they don't quite match the functionality of the fenix 6 being able to route on the fly and have a POI database stored on the device itself. Hope that helps!
@@ChaseTheSummit Isn't the 9 a newer version, therefore it should have more options than the 7. I might be wrong, I know almost nothing about Suunto watches.
@@n3ssaya972 The 7 is actually newer and based on Google Wear OS which is a powerful operating system similar to something like an apple watch. The Suunto 9 Baro is a true sportswatch that runs proprietary software. They're very different devices.
Just got my Fenyx 6 because of your videos. Have it paired with the HRMPRO. I’ll be watching your videos for quality tips and tricks! Edit- just tried and a little bit bummed but not surprised- I run on horse trails around the hills/mountains I live around and it can’t create a map. Do you know if running them will teach the data system that these are runnable trails? Thanks!
You can try downloading other base maps from OSM or purchasing higher resolution maps from Garmin. You can also try toggling “map themes” to see if that helps. Unfortunately they don’t have 100% of the worlds trails but it’s pretty darn close. If you know the area you could manually set up courses to explore by creating it in Connect. Hope that helps!
great video! nice to see more in depth details on the navigation feature. Do you use "use map" or "follow course"? For some reason "use map" doesn't work great for me, if I take a slight detour from the initial course the Fenix 6X Pro gets so confused and really struggle to reroute correctly. It ends up calculating and at the end completely change the course I designed... so I use "follow course" but there is no turn by turn notification, just "off course" warning. do you experience this too? I even have the original maps, I initially used 3rd party maps and thought it was the issue.
Great video ! My SUUNTO Spartan Sport WHR battery (which only does breadcrumb navigation) dies after 6h30 and does not always record the elevation (!!). Can't stand it anymore ! I want to buy a watch that can last at least 30hours under GPS use and on which I will be able to input my own route, preferably created on my laptop, much more comfortable. Suunto App can't be used on laptop since they cancelled Movecount (grrr...). I was told that Coros could do the trick but it appears their watches don't have navigation/mapping system like SUUNTO or GARMIN. Which watch would you recommend ? Many thanks !!
Lots of options these days for 30+ hours of battery life. Check out the Forerunner 945, or Coros Apex Pro. The 945 has "real maps" which can be helpful but the Apex Pro has a bit longer battery life. Hope that helps! geni.us/UmMd7
@@ChaseTheSummit Tks a lot for your speed reply. You are a great guy. You reply to everyone and give so many tips. I'm buying the 945 immediately using the link you gave.
Great video! Quick question about waypoints in a previous video you recommended exorting the route so each turn doesn't become a waypoint, is that no longer the case?
Oddly this is still the case. So if you want to have your waypoints be the ones added to the map you still need to Sync over USB. I've actually mentioned this to Garmin and I'm hoping they can resolve it!
What's your thought on current best value for following a trail map now in late 2022? Kind of want full maps, but it adds SO much cost (like $700 vs $200) and the batteries on these things only last a few years. Kind of debating waiting on full maps until batteries improve or cpu performance increases on these.
I always have my phone with me(with offline maps) so I am leaning more to a breadcrumb navigation. All those extras are handy but not necessarily. All that being said im still not sure which one I should buy.
@@ChaseTheSummitThanks for tip! I've decided to pick up a second hand FR245(for just 100euro) and try it out for a while. Once I'm sure what I want I'll go for an upgrade.
I’m partial to Garmin but there are so many good ones out there at this point! Due to the nature of my channel I end up swapping them out regularly but usually end up back on the Fenix 6s. Thanks for watching!
Amazing review! I’ve made my decision based on this video! I’m not sure if I missed it but can you set a distance on the fenix say 10k and it will plan a route for you? Rather then inputing a route? Thanks again :)
Yes you can do this. You just tell it which direction you want to run in, and it will create a course based on your desired distance using "trendline" popularity routing. Hope that helps!
Hello, I really like your videos, it help me a lot to make a choice. May I ask you if it's a yellow quickfit 20mm on you garmin? On the website I only saw it for quickfit 22mm.
What other watches, not necessarily from Garmin, have a similar navigation system like the fenix 6? From Garmin the answer is already on the video, I know..
Unfortunately no one else is doing full offline maps. You can however get breadcrumb navigation in most of the COROS watches and also in Suunto 7/9. While Polar supports some navigation it's not quite on the same level. Hope that helps.
@@ChaseTheSummit you adding Suunto into the mix two I guess? If you are, worth mentioning you can sync new routes/change routes mid-activity using the app, which is nifty.
@@ChaseTheSummit nice, you mentioned the Track Back part for the 745 Vs the 6s Pro giving you a trendline quickest way back and I thought that might be useful to know that Suunto has something like that - so long as you have a phone with & data connection, you can edit the route as you want - so a middle ground solution between the 745 mapping & 6s Pro I guess!
Just got the 6X Sapphire. Love it but the screen seems so dim. I am wondering if that's just the way it is or should I take it back and try again? I have the backlight at 100%.
These types of screens are never going to be super bright like an apple watch. However, some Garmin displays come dimmer with lower contrast than others. It's luck of the draw from the manufacturer. If you're unhappy I would certainly exchange to see if that helps.
@@ChaseTheSummit That helps a lot. Would I be better off getting Gorilla Glass? Is it brighter? Anyhow, thank you! And love your videos. They help a lot. Keep 'em up!
Ty, I didn't know the fenix 6 was so much better. Can it also record a course, like if you're doing a trail race on a looped course, and I want to record the first loop? It can also route in reverse too, I think just like the 745?
Yup, you could save the activity after the first loop and then start a new activity using the last activity as your route. This would result in a split activity that you'd have to merge later. The other option would be to create the loop in Garmin Connect before your activity and have it saved on the watch. Both can route in reverse. Thanks for watching!
Thank you! You are literally the only one who talks about this topic with clear and concise, practical explanation.

Brilliant video and very clear explanation! This helped a lot! You should be working for Garmin or your channel should be sponsored by them at least. I bought a FR 245 a week ago and I find the whole user experience for the watch very challenging. 😌
Thanks! I'm not sure I'd accept a sponsorship from them... People might not trust my opinions if they were paying me! But I suppose everything has a number 😂 For now I'll just keep making them for fun. Appreciate the kind words!
@@ChaseTheSummit I agree about staying independent from any companies. But your videos are so good. Maybe Garmin should just copy your style and make their own videos then. 😂
Awesome detailed review.
Just for context, in my area in Kolkata, India - it doesn't have a lot of information because of less users (although gmaps is pretty good)
Oh interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, for example - if i go choose a direction and ask for a new auto course, it says nothing found. Obviously there are many roads nearby, but very less users - so that probably matters more. But just 15km from here, i can see a few user-made courses available.
Super, never really knew how to set a new course, thnx
Happy to help!
Hi Dave, you definitely have interesting topics lined up 👍🏻
Glad you like them!
Finally someone that could show selec a point in the map and go lol
Does everything you’ve shared about the Fenix 6 apply to the Tactix Delta? I’m new to the Garmin ecosystem of watches and have noticed that no one really takes about the Delta. Does the Delta fit on your list of watches that handles full navigation? I think it does, but the general lack of mention of the Delta is confusing. Thanks.
Yes. The Delta is basically a Fenix 6 with a few added features specific to tactical use.
Great video! Thorough and clear.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great content 👌
Quick question: if I just need something that will track where I'm running & show it afterwards on a map, will breadcrumb do that.. right now, on my android, I use Google fit, & it shows which roads I ran or biked on during that workout after im done
Keep up the great content 👏 👌 👍
very informative, thank you
I’m definitely keeping my Fenix 6S Sapphire 🤣 I planned to put it on sale after my husband gave me a green FR745 to match his Red One, I love how lightweight 745 is compared to Fenix, I even wear it to sleep. But I will make the most out of my Fenix 6S starting now..🤣 Btw can you make a video how you keep your stats in place while switching between trackers? I found wearing 2 devices alternately make the Body Battery, Stress Level & Avr RHR not aligned.. I would like to know how you think.. Thank you!
Physio true up should keep them in sync but sometimes there’s a bit of a delay. Thanks for watching! The Fenix 6 is certainly a bit more capable!
@Vina DS I was going to do the same thing! Now I will definitely keep my 6s Sapphire also.
Awesome vid bud
Thanks!
Awesome video definitely made the decision easier of which watch to get. One question can you load a gpx like of a race to either these watches?
Yup, both can load GPX files. The benefit of the Fenix is that it has an actual map around the course.
Great video :) is there a few good budget watches with full routable maps on the watch itself instead the breadcrumbs one ? I own Amazfit Stratos 2 and im looking for an decent upgrade. Love ur stuff ! Keep it up men 😜
For full mapping on a budget I'd check out the Garmin Forerunner 945, or an older Garmin Fenix like the 5X, or 5 Plus models.
Tough call!
Super helpful, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, finally I understand the difference :)
Glad it helped!
Another great video many thanks
Thanks for watching!
Thx for the video Dave. Last question: Does the breadcrumb navigation on the FR 745 support Turn by Turn navigation?
Yep, but only if you create the course in Garmin Connect. Doesn't work for importated GPX Files.
should I wait for fr955.. it is a silly question but I can’t resist asking
Yes, it's a silly question but occurs often. :) There may be a FR955 or a Fenix 7 but no one knows for sure and when, if at all
I'm guessing may/june for whatever comes after the 945. It's up to you whether or not that's worth waiting for!
@@ao7594 they dont cut it very much as theres a lot of demand
Hello Summit Chaser
I've also enjoyed your comparison of the 745 and 945.
I've been using a Suunto Ambit 3P for years but,
now that they've gone app only, I want to jump ship.
I'm used to breadcrumb mapping. With the watch mounted
on a handlebar 'wrist', I use it mainly when cycling.
I rarely wear the huge watch on my wrist, and when I do,
I know it's there.
@@ChaseTheSummit Thanks, and for replying so quickly. Knowing the facts does help.
Brilliant video. Thank you. I'm using these to decide between the 745 or the 6S. Is the process similar when creating a route on Strava or Komoot?
garmin made very good connection to strava. So you can create route on strava, and if it is highlighted, garmin automatically transfer it to courses :)
Yup, you can actually directly sync Strava courses to Connect with the click of a button now.
If you go fishing around the Internet you can find discount codes for Strava as well so you can get the premium experience for less.
Thanks for sharing. I think the newer models are a bit more responsive but yeah... If you're moving fast I'm sure upcoming turns are hard to see.
this helped a lot, thankyou!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi. Good job, as always. Can you do a tutorial or explanation of PacePro function? And please touch the subject why you can choose whatever target pace you want on a watch but on a phone app or connect Web page you are limited to 8m42s/km min or faster. For longer runs like 100-160km this pace is for elite only
Thanks! I'll add that to the list!
@@ChaseTheSummit THX. Maybe Garmin will listen 😉
Informative video, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video, very informative 👍
Thanks!
Great tutorial as always!
Glad you found it helpful!
Awesome... awesome...vídeo...keep doing...
Thank you!
Thank you for that video! Quick question: Is there such functionality on other popular brands that you have experience with?
Right now no other brand supports full, routable, offline maps... Garmin has that market cornered mainly because of their history with mapping software and navigation devices on boats and cars. The only other alternative would be something like the Apple Watch or a Wear OS device like the Suunto 7. Both offer offline maps (with certain apps) but they don't quite match the functionality of the fenix 6 being able to route on the fly and have a POI database stored on the device itself. Hope that helps!
@@ChaseTheSummit Wait... The Suunto 7 offers maps, but the 9 doesn't?
@@n3ssaya972 correct. The 9 only offers breadcrumb navigation.
@@ChaseTheSummit Sweet! I’ll check out some other apps! Thanks again for the help.
you forgot to show the coordinate display and the various units of coordinates that might be available. Coordinates are paramount to navigation.
I was mainly focusing on how to load a pre-designed course but coordinates are certainly helpful for navigation!
Merci !
👍
awesome video!
Thanks!
Great video Dave, thanks! Can you tell me what OR jacket that is?
The "Vigor" full zip hoodie. I love it!
@@ChaseTheSummit thanks!
great video! nice to see more in depth details on the navigation feature.
I prefer just having the off-course warning myself because I've had similar issues. Thanks for sharing.
@@jeanluno2521 thanks a lot! During this pandemic it seems the most conversation I can get is through comments. I’m happy I can help! Be well!
Another great honest video.........bromance.
😂😂 Thanks for watching!
If you want full maps on a budget check out the older Fenix 6 Pro, or Forerunner 945. They can be found on sale pretty often!
I always have my phone with me(with offline maps) so I am leaning more to a breadcrumb navigation. All those extras are handy but not necessarily. All that being said im still not sure which one I should buy.
I'd avoid the 745 at this point. It's an older device in Garmin's lineup and for the same money the Forerunner 255 or even the 955 have more to offer!
@@ChaseTheSummitThanks for tip! I've decided to pick up a second hand FR245(for just 100euro) and try it out for a while. Once I'm sure what I want I'll go for an upgrade.
Very informative! Thank you! ;)
Glad it was helpful!
спасибо за видео! очень помоголо!
Рад, что это было полезно!
Do you have a favorite at this point? What’s your daily? Looking for an upgrade from my VA 4 and saw a previous video where you preferred the 6s vs 6.
I got it from amazon here: geni.us/LENAxv
What other watches, not necessarily from Garmin, have a similar navigation system like the fenix 6?
From Garmin the answer is already on the video, I know..
Unfortunately no one else is doing full offline maps. You can however get breadcrumb navigation in most of the COROS watches and also in Suunto 7/9. While Polar supports some navigation it's not quite on the same level. Hope that helps.
Great review. I've got a video request. Coros uses breadcrumb navigation. Is there any way of comparing that with the Garmins?
You're predicting the future... coming in the next few days!
@@ChaseTheSummit I knew you'd say that.............spooky :P
@@ChaseTheSummit you adding Suunto into the mix two I guess? If you are, worth mentioning you can sync new routes/change routes mid-activity using the app, which is nifty.
@@MrEmptyone77 It's on the list! Thanks for the tip.
@@ChaseTheSummit Ty, that is perfect! I would have loved this for my first couple of looped ultras.
