I recommend creating copies of the Run activity for specific types of runs, such as parkruns, easy runs, long runs. You can then set unique alerts for each type of run, whether you want auto lap alerts, and which data screens you want (and in what order) for each activity. For an easy run, you may be interested in staying in Zone 2, so set a high HR alert for Z2, set the alert frequency to 1 minute and customize a HR zone data screen. For intervals, you may choose to have no alerts, but may want to prioritize pace, power and HR data in one data screen. If you use headphones, you can have most of this data narrated to you without having to look at your watch all the time.
That's a really clever idea, didn't know you could do that. I have a series of configured screens within the Run activity which I use for different run sessions. Now I can have dedicated activities!
Discard lap!!! Great tip. Find my phone I use all the time. What I also got was to set my trail running shoes as default for trail running, now I call everything just running. Good video, Andy.
I have a Garmin 945. I struggle with often bad or questionable elevation gain data. Occasionally it seem correct for the course often though it’s way off and inconsistent. Ran a flat marathon with a friend last week- 500’ of gain on the course, my 945 showed 3500’. Any ideas?
i track my shoe milage even though my shoes are beyond stuffed at this point - also HRV is awesome having been retrofitted to the fenix 6 in semirecent software updates. it showed a difference a couple days before i got hit w a bad covid case
Great video, thank you!! During my runs I have the feeling that in low GPS-coverge areas Garmin might also take advantage of the accelerometer. Can this be the case or it's just the inaccuracy of the GPS, really? As for extra feature, I love the event-based daily training recommendations, which adapt as per your sleep, stress and recovery.
Thank for video was great. Can I ask, I've chosen a run coach on garmin connect and following his running program. I don't like and want to choose someone else that saw st the beginning when I first setup my 955. I can't seem to find the other coach to load. Must I first cancel or delete the current coach before it allows me to choose someone else? TIA
One I recently found was creating a random course. press on the three dots at bottom right corner (more); press on training and planning then courses. press "create course" - then "running". next screen is Drawing Method - press "automatic" - select your distance and direction, and then press next. It will ask you for your starting position and then it creates a course . Drag up the bottom screen and you can set your pace and/or goal time. Never knew that one existed. There is bound to be more that I didn't know about on the Garmin
I've been running a lot recently but my watch still says I have the pulse of an ox, do you know how I change this to another animal? Asking for my friend Rick, thanks.
Question if you race a previous run on the watch and indicates your 10 seconds behind, is the 10 seconds on the same part of the course, or total distance, hope that makes sense
I'm trying to figure out the gear feature. It would be useful to automatically track shoe use against different types of runs. I have 'base' and 'interval' activities setup on my watch and generally use different shoes for these. When it comes to setting a default for the gear(shoe) I only have the one option on my fenix which is 'running' . So it doesn't appear possible to have it setup to assign different shoes to different activities automatically unless I'm missing something? Thanks.
Agreed. If I follow the watches recommended run of the day and that is a slow run, it complains about my performance even if I feel it's very easy. 🤦♂️
You can totally skew it if you head out fast for the first 10 mins. If you run slow up a hill with a vest on it’s terrible. Maybe not great as training readiness I do think it gives an indication of how efficient you are.
great video, very interesting! May you explain the differences between HIKE an TRAIL RUN modes in Garmin Fenix 3? How does Garmin collect trekking data in both cases
The sadest part about this video, is the feature I didnt know I had I needed the most. "Find My Phone" this is seriously the most important tip I have ever received from the running channel hahaha.
I use HRV as an indication of whether or not I need to start my "try not to get sick" regimen 😅.... can't keep up with it on the daily, but it's super helpful when needful!

For lactate test, I'd say James and Jess What comes to Garmin tricks, you can set for each activity type whether or not it will ask self-evaluation at the end of activity (I guess it is just something that Garmin stores into your history, but doesn't actually use anywhere).

I just started my running journey. I have my trusted basic garmin 255. I’m excited getting fitter weekly and it’s definitely better than staying on my couch. But sometimes garmin is very harsh in its reminders to increase anaerobic/speed interval excercises.
Pace pro brought be successfully through my first HM with negative splits. I found DSWs great because this keeps the training surprising and kinda reminds you to do the hard stuff as well. Training Status is another great feature, just to have visualization of training load, recovery etc.
Got Garmin 55 last week and done 3 x 5k runs and 1 x 10k slow pace runs so far. Going to upgrade the watch when they drop a new generation (apparently next month). Which watch are you using? Im thinking epix 2 pro, 265 or 965.
I'd say yes to lactate threshold - unedited version - I (and many people I know) have tried this several times and it's always failed having been through the whole guidance. Be good to see if we're doing something wrong or different and thats why it's failing.
Always like to see more tips on making sessions easier to follow and tips and tricks to improve that is great. More please. Maybe worth noting that some of the features are only available on newer watches. The apple map pin ism't available on older phones like the Fenix 6X Pro for example (and i assume all phone from that year and older).
A good one I find is when I've planned a route in strava and synced that to my Garmin...I can setup a run and use the planned route on my run and it even prompts me audio on my headphones of say an upcoming turn
I'm a scatterbrain and not much of a runner. So the last Garmin tip about finding your phone is the only one I know and use regularly once I discovered it! I found out about it accidentally though!
Ever tried AutoLap in "Position" mode? Most people probably use the "Distance" mode set to 1 mi or 1 km. Using the "Position" mode counts a new round whenever you pass the starting position. Add a data field for rounds and you will never ever be confused about number of rounds made in the park or stadium. Kind regards and thanks for the video. 😊
I used to have an AW, so I've found quite difficult to pay via my Garmin to start with, but you can actually set up hot key for card payments, so it's easy and fast :)
I think they're sponsored by Garmin. As a Garmin user though I'm definitely looking at switch to Coros for my next watch. I see no benefits from Garmin over Coros and the price of Coros watches is far superior.
@@Enoch-Root, I go the Coros Apex as I started running (2.5 years ago) and switched to Garmin 255 last December. I really loved the Garmin Coach as it brought me to structured running training. Using the watch heart rate sensor when cycling on zwift. You go to watch sensors and you broadcast the heart rate and it will record the heart rate on zwift.
I'd like to know how to set my heart rate zones in the best way possible. There are many options... Based on %HRM %HRR %LTHR ... Also how do I find out my max heart rate.
I came out of covid with a form of exercise induced asthma. And because of meniscus surgery on both knees, I'm only doing no more than three and a half miles now. I do look at my watch a lot because I'm focusing on my heart rate in my pace. If my heart rate is too high and my pace is too low I slow down. So pace and heart rate are two things that I focus on
I used to think Performance Condition ranged from -10 to +10, with me rarely seeing anything outside of +/-5... ...then recently I started a 10k race and saw "+13"!!!! Was such an ego boost!!!! (oh and Definitely Andy and Rick for Lactate testing: Great to see what a high end lactate performer would look like, and Rick's struggles with science basics would make entertaining viewing)
Since I could not afford one of the new Garmin‘s, I use a Fenix 5 in prep for my first HM. I must say this Fenix 5 is giving me some hard time as inconsistency is on a regular base, HR spikes all the time, pace showing odd timing, horrendous. But I am stuck with this for my prep, hope at least to finish my HM regardless😜😜
Add your Dog as Gear in Connect. Also if you want you can creat a unique Dog walking activity and have it automatically add the dog(gear) to that activity. Then you can track your dogs walks etc.
Maybe I'm missing it, but it looks like the Drop Pin and share with Garmin Connect is missing in Android. Not that it matters much, the one or two times I've used this, I just kept my phone in my hand, but having the option would be nice.
I recently upgraded from a 255 to a 955, mainly for the full mapping, which is fantastic. But the 955 has some odd quirks. For example, its default Sleep setup was to go into Battery Saver mode, which turns off the HR monitor. This meant that pretty much all of the watch’s recommendations for recovery, training suggestions, and HRV status were hopelessly inaccurate. Strange!
MMM how do you send that pin from Google maps to connect? If I open Google maps en pin a point. And want to send it. I don't have a option to send it to connect. I have the fr965
@@nycon2k thanks a lot, the back button works for me but the double tap doesn’t for some reason. Either zooms in or moves the cross hairs depending on the mode I have the map screen on. Button it is!
Good video even though there was nothing new for me. To be fair some of the things mentioned took me a month to notice after i got my fenix. I got some things i noticed think some migvt not know. - when turning on the flashlight you can adjust the brightness instantly. -you can adjust short keycommands so if u like to take a screenshot by holding stop and up button. Or turn on touch by pressing start and down both at once. -you can enter emergency contacts so garmin can contact them if something happens to you. -%hrr zones was good to switch to instantly. -you have to manually switch pulse ox measures rather than opt out. -you can have stamina and potential stamina on the watchface when running. -pace pro functionality took a while before i tried it. -sometimes i forget to turn off the activity (if it happens to be discgolf or something other than running) and you can easily crop it afterwards.
Best feature is the hidden workouts available from the pc app you can set up heart rate workouts for various distances running and cycling that are better than the Garmin coach
First tip 00:40 don't work at Garmin Forerunner 945: when I while running accidentally press Laps (lower right button) and, according to your advice, try to remove an extra lap and click on the lower right one - on the screen appears data about my heart rate ..
@@skirtonbear1if I click on the lower left button, the music playback settings appear... 😔perhaps this depends on the settings of the Garmin work screens...

How to do this?
That lap undo tip was so useful.
Pace Pro is an absolute game changer with being able to see how far ahead of your target you are in real time
Not very useful in a race because you CANNOT correct the distance (and there are always small variations), use Peter's Race Pacer instead.

Yes! I would love to see a lactate threshold test!
What a great video. Thank you guys!
Add your Dog as Gear in Connect. Also if you want you can creat a unique Dog walking activity and have it automatically add the dog(gear) to that activity. Then you can track your dogs walks etc.
I would love to see a Garmin lactate threshold test and see how it compares to a lab’s test.
I can't seem to get the eat/drink alerts to work when doing a structured workout. It only works if it's in a regular activity
Maybe I'm missing it, but it looks like the Drop Pin and share with Garmin Connect is missing in Android. Not that it matters much, the one or two times I've used this, I just kept my phone in my hand, but having the option would be nice.
I was thinking the same.
Strange!
Is it possible to use the "share location" on Android Google maps?
How do you add shoes to different running activities. Cause I dont see that option
Yes, I love the garmin videos!
MMM how do you send that pin from Google maps to connect? If I open Google maps en pin a point. And want to send it. I don't have a option to send it to connect. I have the fr965
keep em coming!
Question: on my 965 when I’m scrolling around in the map, how do I return to show my current location quickly?
While in workout you just have to press the back button (lower right button) once or double tap on the touchscreen (if touch is activated). 😉
@@nycon2k thanks a lot, the back button works for me but the double tap doesn’t for some reason. Either zooms in or moves the cross hairs depending on the mode I have the map screen on. Button it is!
the lap button undo. what a life saver of a tip that is.
any tips for over using shin muscle it gets super tight a mile in
undo lap didn't work on fenix 5. is this just a recent feature?
Great tip!
where can i find it exactly?
How about a video on Garmin watches and running foot pods like Stryd
Thought I knew the watch quite well, but the find my phone bit is great
First tip 00:40 don't work at Garmin Forerunner 945: when I while running accidentally press Laps (lower right button) and, according to your advice, try to remove an extra lap and click on the lower right one - on the screen appears data about my heart rate ..
Lower left button-where the undo shows up is also where you press.
@@skirtonbear1if I click on the lower left button, the music playback settings appear... 😔perhaps this depends on the settings of the Garmin work screens...
Yes more please 🎉
I use a lot of these features, be aware some features not available on older models
I knew about the alerts and I’ve tried to get my watch (Venu 3) to alert me every km with my pace but it does it out the watch speaker and not through my earphones 🙃
