I recommend creating copies of the Run activity for specific types of runs, such as parkruns, easy runs, long runs. You can then set unique alerts for each type of run, whether you want auto lap alerts, and which data screens you want (and in what order) for each activity. For an easy run, you may be interested in staying in Zone 2, so set a high HR alert for Z2, set the alert frequency to 1 minute and customize a HR zone data screen. For intervals, you may choose to have no alerts, but may want to prioritize pace, power and HR data in one data screen. If you use headphones, you can have most of this data narrated to you without having to look at your watch all the time.
That's a really clever idea, didn't know you could do that. I have a series of configured screens within the Run activity which I use for different run sessions. Now I can have dedicated activities!
Discard lap!!! Great tip. Find my phone I use all the time. What I also got was to set my trail running shoes as default for trail running, now I call everything just running. Good video, Andy.
I think it’s a useless and unreliable function. I started a warm up and it showed a -4 condition. I then restarted to an interval session and miraculously I had improved to a +3 condition.
One I recently found was creating a random course. press on the three dots at bottom right corner (more); press on training and planning then courses. press "create course" - then "running". next screen is Drawing Method - press "automatic" - select your distance and direction, and then press next. It will ask you for your starting position and then it creates a course . Drag up the bottom screen and you can set your pace and/or goal time. Never knew that one existed. There is bound to be more that I didn't know about on the Garmin
I'm a scatterbrain and not much of a runner. So the last Garmin tip about finding your phone is the only one I know and use regularly once I discovered it! I found out about it accidentally though!
The sadest part about this video, is the feature I didnt know I had I needed the most. "Find My Phone" this is seriously the most important tip I have ever received from the running channel hahaha.
i track my shoe milage even though my shoes are beyond stuffed at this point - also HRV is awesome having been retrofitted to the fenix 6 in semirecent software updates. it showed a difference a couple days before i got hit w a bad covid case
I use HRV as an indication of whether or not I need to start my "try not to get sick" regimen 😅.... can't keep up with it on the daily, but it's super helpful when needful!
Agreed. If I follow the watches recommended run of the day and that is a slow run, it complains about my performance even if I feel it's very easy. 🤦♂️
You can totally skew it if you head out fast for the first 10 mins. If you run slow up a hill with a vest on it’s terrible. Maybe not great as training readiness I do think it gives an indication of how efficient you are.
I just started my running journey. I have my trusted basic garmin 255. I’m excited getting fitter weekly and it’s definitely better than staying on my couch. But sometimes garmin is very harsh in its reminders to increase anaerobic/speed interval excercises.
great video, very interesting! May you explain the differences between HIKE an TRAIL RUN modes in Garmin Fenix 3? How does Garmin collect trekking data in both cases
Pace pro brought be successfully through my first HM with negative splits. I found DSWs great because this keeps the training surprising and kinda reminds you to do the hard stuff as well. Training Status is another great feature, just to have visualization of training load, recovery etc.
Thank for video was great. Can I ask, I've chosen a run coach on garmin connect and following his running program. I don't like and want to choose someone else that saw st the beginning when I first setup my 955. I can't seem to find the other coach to load. Must I first cancel or delete the current coach before it allows me to choose someone else? TIA
Great video, thank you!! During my runs I have the feeling that in low GPS-coverge areas Garmin might also take advantage of the accelerometer. Can this be the case or it's just the inaccuracy of the GPS, really? As for extra feature, I love the event-based daily training recommendations, which adapt as per your sleep, stress and recovery.
I have a Garmin 945. I struggle with often bad or questionable elevation gain data. Occasionally it seem correct for the course often though it’s way off and inconsistent. Ran a flat marathon with a friend last week- 500’ of gain on the course, my 945 showed 3500’. Any ideas?
For lactate test, I'd say James and Jess What comes to Garmin tricks, you can set for each activity type whether or not it will ask self-evaluation at the end of activity (I guess it is just something that Garmin stores into your history, but doesn't actually use anywhere).
Question if you race a previous run on the watch and indicates your 10 seconds behind, is the 10 seconds on the same part of the course, or total distance, hope that makes sense
This video was super helpful! I wish they would add a double tap confirmation for saving an activity. Stop > Save > Bro! Are you Sure? I think you have another 1k to go. > Saved
Another battery saver for long runs when navigating is the track orientation - the default is to always track up (so that the heading big always points in the direction of travel, but this causes the screen to redraw a lot more often). Change it to "track north", which means that 12 o'clock on your watch is always North. Takes a bit of getting used to when running in a southerly direction but it saves some battery life 😉😎
@@AckerQ. I thought someone had done but a quick search seems to mostly throw up anecdotal evidence, so I may give it a try at some point as I am genuinely intrigued. I'd love to know how much battery I'm saving 🤔😊

@@Enoch-Root, I go the Coros Apex as I started running (2.5 years ago) and switched to Garmin 255 last December. I really loved the Garmin Coach as it brought me to structured running training. I am currently subscribed to one of the coaches there directly, so I don’t use their feature directly. I guess it depends on what we want from our watches, but I am happy I’ve switched to Garmin when I did. Sometimes is hard to know which features are personally useful until you try them. I really PacePro as well, although I used it only twice as a pacer.
@@Enoch-Root that's fair, but also let's put it this way. Although, lets be real, I trust them with my training so I do trust their opinions very much already. 💃🏼
I came out of covid with a form of exercise induced asthma. And because of meniscus surgery on both knees, I'm only doing no more than three and a half miles now. I do look at my watch a lot because I'm focusing on my heart rate in my pace. If my heart rate is too high and my pace is too low I slow down. So pace and heart rate are two things that I focus on
I used to have an AW, so I've found quite difficult to pay via my Garmin to start with, but you can actually set up hot key for card payments, so it's easy and fast :)
Please do the lactate threshold test video, but do it in the lab too, and compare the results. I would be really interested in how much can the watch estimate be taken seriously.
I used to think Performance Condition ranged from -10 to +10, with me rarely seeing anything outside of +/-5... ...then recently I started a 10k race and saw "+13"!!!! Was such an ego boost!!!! Maybe worth noting that some of the features are only available on newer watches. The apple map pin ism't available on older phones like the Fenix 6X Pro for example (and i assume all phone from that year and older).
I recently upgraded from a 255 to a 955, mainly for the full mapping, which is fantastic. But the 955 has some odd quirks. For example, its default Sleep setup was to go into Battery Saver mode, which turns off the HR monitor. This meant that pretty much all of the watch’s recommendations for recovery, training suggestions, and HRV status were hopelessly inaccurate. Strange!
I've been running a lot recently but my watch still says I have the pulse of an ox, do you know how I change this to another animal? Asking for my friend Rick, thanks.
I'm trying to figure out the gear feature. It would be useful to automatically track shoe use against different types of runs. I have 'base' and 'interval' activities setup on my watch and generally use different shoes for these. When it comes to setting a default for the gear(shoe) I only have the one option on my fenix which is 'running' . So it doesn't appear possible to have it setup to assign different shoes to different activities automatically unless I'm missing something? Thanks.
Since I could not afford one of the new Garmin‘s, I use a Fenix 5 in prep for my first HM. I must say this Fenix 5 is giving me some hard time as inconsistency is on a regular base, HR spikes all the time, pace showing odd timing, horrendous. But I am stuck with this for my prep, hope at least to finish my HM regardless😜😜
Best feature is the hidden workouts available from the pc app you can set up heart rate workouts for various distances running and cycling that are better than the Garmin coach
I'd like to know how to set my heart rate zones in the best way possible. There are many options... Based on %HRM %HRR %LTHR ... Also how do I find out my max heart rate.

Got Garmin 55 last week and done 3 x 5k runs and 1 x 10k slow pace runs so far. Going to upgrade the watch when they drop a new generation (apparently next month). Which watch are you using? Im thinking epix 2 pro, 265 or 965.
I really wish that Garmin would add "time only" on the training target. Sometimes I don't want to do a set distance in a time, but just to run for 60 or 90 minutes, It would be great to have this on the screen as a countdown so that you can turn round on an out and back, as well as see how many kms you're covering.

Hi! Very good video! I loved it! How can I do to calibrate my watch when runnin on a treadmill? When I first used my Garmin Forerunner 965 my cadence was a lot lower than now. So , my Garmin is sooo wrong , because it uses the accelerometer to estimate pace, distance , etc. Thanks
Activity: Treadmill Upon stopping activity, keep scrolling down and you should eventually see Calibrate. I have a 965 and at first I just saved the activity; easy to miss the Calibrate option way down the list of options.
I'd say yes to lactate threshold - unedited version - I (and many people I know) have tried this several times and it's always failed having been through the whole guidance. Be good to see if we're doing something wrong or different and thats why it's failing.
Yes to a threshold test. However, I’d have to say Andy and Sarah, not only to compare with the lab, but also how accurate it is for a fit young woman and an elite runner
Yes, more Garmin tips and yes to lactate threshold. I’d say Sarah and Mo.
Deal!
And Tom, for humour
Don't forget Rick, for complementary skincare tips.

How to do this?
Pace Pro is an absolute game changer with being able to see how far ahead of your target you are in real time
"undo lap" is what I have been searching for for weeks 😆 hopefully this is on the 55 model
Discard lap!!! Great tip. Find my phone I use all the time. What I also got was to set my trail running shoes as default for trail running, now I call everything just running. Good video, Andy.
I learned about the undo lap button in a recent podcast, I think. Really useful lol I'm always hitting the lap button by accident
Do I need to activate it? I do not have this undo arrow and can not undo it (Garmin 945 XT).
This is quite a new feature still, IIRC it was only added about a month ago.
Wonderful… just got my Foreunner 965. Keep the videos coming.
Yes, more Garmin tips please. And my vote for the lactate threshold test is Andy and Sarah
I had to disable “Performance Condition” - Nothing worse than seeing -6 as you start a race!
how on 6x pro? ;)
I think it’s a useless and unreliable function. I started a warm up and it showed a -4 condition. I then restarted to an interval session and miraculously I had improved to a +3 condition.
Depending on which route I go, I either get a plus (slight downhill) or minus (uphill). I have disabled it as well.
I like it!
It shows +1 to +5 always! 🙂 😎
@neilporter6908 if anything I think that's proof you should warm up before you start a session/run or a race 😅
I use "Find my phone" constantly 😅 I'm always forgetting where i put it down at home 😅

That and the flashlight on the Fenix 7 😂
Me too, but on my Apple Watch, it’s way louder and you can press and hold to get a flashing light as well.

How can I do to calibrate my watch when runnin on a treadmill?
When I first used my Garmin Forerunner 965 my cadence was a lot lower than now. So , my Garmin is sooo wrong , because it uses the accelerometer to estimate pace, distance , etc.
Thanks
Activity: Treadmill
Upon stopping activity, keep scrolling down and you should eventually see Calibrate. I have a 965 and at first I just saved the activity; easy to miss the Calibrate option way down the list of options.
@@GripEngineering thank you so much!!
I'd say yes to lactate threshold - unedited version - I (and many people I know) have tried this several times and it's always failed having been through the whole guidance. Be good to see if we're doing something wrong or different and thats why it's failing.
I wanna learn if the forerunner 965 livetracking has the ability to track your mates?
Yes to a threshold test. However, I’d have to say Andy and Sarah, not only to compare with the lab, but also how accurate it is for a fit young woman and an elite runner
I like to know Garmin Connect better. It is so limited for serious analyzing or I cant find settings I like to know ?
There's a timer which you can access through the "light" menu and I use it all the time for brewing tea, boiling eggs etc
How about a video on Garmin watches and running foot pods like Stryd
