Deep on the most vicious trip I had ever been on, psychotic, alone, unheard, unloved, my surroundings disheveled and ornate with glowing piles of rubbish, cigarette butts strewn about, this song comes on. And I rise, rise, rise. To a higher level of consciousness; Suddenly, and with great violence, I am brought to a new land. A land of soaring heights and the empowering vision of sun on my cheek, the cool breeze of wind flowing down my back. I realize now I am flying. I am no longer bound, no longer chained, but untethered, even unconcerned by the violence which has beset all about me. Love is no longer a mystery, but a profound truth which inflates my very being with the vigour of untainted and joyous rapture. I am free. I am triumphant.

One of the most beautiful soul baring guitar solos I’ve ever heard. He was tapping in to the divine when he did this. Not something that’s learned, only something that can come from a place where words mean nothing. RIP Eddie Hazel, thanks for sharing this magical music with us. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

the point of his birth was to gift our planet with this song. He died young because he accomplished his goal and the universe needed his immense energy elsewhere.
Someone compared my Tears of Life intro to this, and I had never known about this song. I'm so glad they compared me to this. I've got a lot of pain and suffering, so I put that in my guitar. I'll never forget this song.
This is probably the greatest guitar solo in the history of guitar solos. Unfortunately most white rock fans (including me, until about ten years ago) are not familiar with this because most rock radio stations never play it.
@@anthonygerace8926 All of the good stuff isn't played on radio. Clevelander here, so I've heard this song a ton, but honestly right now, is the greatest time in funk music history. There is so much good funk around the world now that noone knows about unless you are plugged in and look. Khruangbin, Yin Yin, Altin Gun, tons of great sounds coming from Africa, Texas, Middle east and Japan to name a few.

From the Wikipedia entry about Eddie Hazel: The third album's title song, "Maggot Brain", consists of a ten-minute guitar solo by Hazel. George Clinton reportedly told Hazel during the recording session to imagine he had been told his mother had just died. Music critic Greg Tate described it as Funkadelic's "A Love Supreme" (by John Coltrane). In 2008, Rolling Stone cited this as number 60 on its list of 100 greatest "guitar songs" of all time. Rest in Peace, Power, and Paradise, Eddie Hazel.
Before stepping into the recording booth, George Clinton supposedly gave Hazel the sole prompt to play "like you heard your mother just died". The song was chosen to be played at Eddie Hazel's funeral in 1991 by his mother...
A human talks. Something that makes a human. Bare bones, the human condition, laid down. Its dispassionate acknowledgement. Acceptance. The challenge. The struggle. A desire of transcendence. After that the solo kicks in. Something that a human makes. Emotion in its rawest form, beyond all futile intellect. Man naked, helpless, subdued. Mourning. Freedom. Connection. Beyond. Infinity. Mankind succinctly summarised--no tired gimmicks, no overcomplicated ramblings, no superfluous literary devices. Our eternal return in little over ten minutes. Such time, compared to the span of our human life, is what our whole life is to the history of humanity. A resounding masterpiece.
This is Fantastic ! I Just Heard it for the First Time! And I am 67yrs. Old! It Reaks of Zappa , Hendrix and Iommie ! Why the Hell Didn't they Play this On the Radio Too ! Instead Hotel California !, Freebird!, And Dream On! Every Hour on the Hour!
9-10 minute track length will do that. There's the radio station in Cleveland that's been playing it every Sunday night to end their show for ages. It still doesn't get the recognition it deserves, but we all know how cherished it is by those that find it within their lifetime.
How did I age to 46 without listening to this? I know Funkadelic and some of their music and I knew of this albums existence but only today I suddenly had to play it. WOW!!!

All of our lives are filled with moments like those you shared with someone you loved. We forget sometimes I think that they after all " Moments". A drink with a friend, a walk down a street in the autumn, a kiss.... what ever the moment is... remember that every moment you find yourself in is limited, rare , unique. When we understand that there is a finite number of every event, we begin to understand the importance of every minute , hour, day. Life is not framed by key note events... it is built on our understanding that every moment of your life is special and has a weight to it. Live in every moment .....
God rest his soul, my dad played this as I was growing up. It's been almost 2 years since he passed. I have sooooo many memories of my dad and I in his garage working on people's cars. I miss you dad. Love you, and thank you for introducing me to some of the best music.
its one thing to play fast and technical which separates you from the rest. its another to transfer emotion to the listener while showing technical skills. This is one of the best guitar pieces ever made period. What raw emotion. Thank you Eddie and George.
The story behind the solo would be of interest - I gather he was locked in the studio for a few days & told to play like 'his Mother had died!' or something ..✌️
First time I ever discovered this life changing Master piece was on 3 tabs of acid and I'll never forget how deep this cut me I lost my mother when I was 2 years old to suicide and my father passed away in my arms on thanksgiving day when I was 7 years old of a heart attack that pain is something I'll always carry with me but when I heard maggotbrain I felt peace the first time in all those years of losing them
Drug free mind expansion, enlightenment thru music. Timeless and universal virtuosity. The entire track was recorded in one take. The solo is played in a pentatonic minor scale in the key of E over another guitar track of a simple arpeggio. Hazel's solo was played through a fuzzbox and a wah pedal; some sections of the song utilize a delay effect. This 47 year old recording still gives me eargasms. Recorded in 1970 released in 1971 it's one of the best recordings of the 20th century of any genre:)
The first time I heard this I was tripping on shrooms alone in the woods by my parent’s house. I walked along this stream and as I was peaking the sun was setting and I placed my hands on the surface of the water and just felt everything, the pain of my addictions, the guilt of my past, and the sorrow for what we’ve done to this beautiful world, but at the same time the music was hope, and everything around me was dancing along, I could feel all my worries dissipate and I felt like I could sense energies of people in my past walking along with me, and I knew someday I’d just be an figment in someone else’s memory. When I got back home I cried in the shower for an hour. Such a beautiful song.
That's so beautiful. I had a similar experience. I played this song for my mom the other night and all she said was "guitar solos are a chance to go to the can and check out who's sitting at the bar." I swear I feel like an alien 👽 in my own family. It helps to know yall are out there.
I wish I had quit my job while she was sick so I could spend more time with her. I'd give up every day ahead of me to have just one of those days back.

An instrument is a voice for your soul if you're as talented as Eddie. When he played this, his voice strained, cracked, shrieked and bellowed all the way through. In a note-for-note replay that will never ring true.
This is insane. I had to wait to the end of the song to write out this comment. I am not the kind of person that’s into guitar or soul or anything like that, but this song. It changes my mind. I honestly don’t think there is any language out there that contains the correct word to describe this song or how it makes me feel. It was like I wasn’t really in my room. It was like I left and traveled the galaxy all in ten minutes. I can’t even remember what I was doing during the song or when I decided to sit down and just shut my eyes. I used to get high every day with my old roommate. I am six years sober and going very very strong, but this... this song is so much more than a trip. This song is a journey.
Congratulations that's awesome man! Now you gotta listen to Before the Beginning by John Fruscinate to continue your journey and then throw in the TOOL Lateralus Album for an even further spiritual awakening! 🤘🤘😎 Rock will NEVER die!
It's one of those very rare songs that once you have heard it, you are never the same person again - and the world around you is forever a different place.
My mother played this for me when I was a child. I didn't remember how it sounded, but I remembered how it made me feel. Came back to refresh my ears and soun. Played it for my children.
I can't believe this is my first time hearing this!! It's like I've been living under a rock musically until now and the sun has shined on me for the first time.
A guitar talking like this conveys so much more emotion than words could ever do…a musician’s instrument becomes an extension of his soul pouring down his fingers like water
Reading the comments I believe we all have a singular and common understanding: this song speaks to your soul. Emotionally, spiritually. It's an absolute masterpiece. My absolute favourite.

Lost my Mother yesterday. Much guilt and regret. Things you need to speak to your parents about. Do it now before they pass away. Things from the heart that only a Mother and Child can only appreciate. Nothing is guaranteed in this life. It is a beautiful World that we live in, but full of pain and suffering for most of us. Tell me what to make of this life on this Earth? So much personal pain and suffering on a Beautiful Planet. Are we in Purgatory? Or are we all dammed? I’m drunk and emotional at the moment. God take care of the people we loved and who passed away. I can only ask my Creator!
Thank the mighty algorithms of RUclips or I might have lived without hearing this. This is the most lyrical guitar solo I have ever heard. I am speechless.

@Tony I don't like drugs either, but calling an acid user a "Junkie" is pretty stupid. Most Psychedelics, including mushrooms and acid, are non-addictive and not physically damaging. They're not shooting heroin or frying themselves on coke. Quit being a troglodyte.

When life kicks my ass (and it surely does!), I plug in, crank it up and play this. This is the sound of immense pain and loss. Eddie and his guitar were one. It cries, screams and almost disintegrates in It's howling rage of pain. I surely know that feeling. We all do.

When I close my eyes, I cry. My life plays like a movie. Around minute 5, I play out my addiction issues. The disjoined rhythm eventually lines back up several minutes later, where I feel my recovery play out. I worked hard to stay alive, only to experience this new world. Everyone stay safe out here...

That guitar strictly sounds like the life-and-death struggle every human being must inherently face. Masterpiece that will never get old
The guitarist was on LSD and was told to play like his mother died, and to play as if he was trying to make sense of it all, the pain, sadness and everything that comes with it. Also was recorded in one take! That is a cherry on the cake... this is a true golden tune.
Music minor. U know ur music 🎶
That in its self is a master piece,
Good comment.
It sounded like a very passionate orgasm to me, tbh
You just articulated how this melody sounded to me
One of the most beautiful soul baring guitar solos I’ve ever heard. He was tapping in to the divine when he did this. Not something that’s learned, only something that can come from a place where words mean nothing. RIP Eddie Hazel, thanks for sharing this magical music with us. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Damn... Died at the age of 42, and apparently this song was played at his own funeral. That must've been a magical and emotional moment.

jimi was born in 1942 and Eddie born in 1950 if Hendrix was alive in the time Eddie died he would have been 50 jimi was 27 when he died and Eddie was 27 when he released his solo LP 7 years after Hendrix passed

the point of his birth was to gift our planet with this song. He died young because he accomplished his goal and the universe needed his immense energy elsewhere.

This is probably the greatest guitar solo in the history of guitar solos. Unfortunately most white rock fans (including me, until about ten years ago) are not familiar with this because most rock radio stations never play it.

From the Wikipedia entry about Eddie Hazel:
The third album's title song, "Maggot Brain", consists of a ten-minute guitar solo by Hazel.
60? I've never heard another song that beats it. The only one that even comes close is The Four Horsemen by Aphrodite's Child.

Emotion in its rawest form, beyond all futile intellect.

Drug free mind expansion, enlightenment thru music. Timeless and universal virtuosity. The entire track was recorded in one take. The solo is played in a pentatonic minor scale in the key of E over another guitar track of a simple arpeggio. Such a beautiful song.

awesome to have this song and that memory. sorry for your loss.
My best friend died in August and back in 1971 we said to play this at our funeral. I didn't actually play it at his funeral but played it all day at home in his memory. RIP my brother!
props brother, rip.
So sad😌
🙏
I was so blown away when this came out in 1971.
Nobody was as bad ass as Funkadelic.
Eddie Hazel has been a huge influence on me.
“Play like your mother has died” I knew there was a reason this always make tears fall from my eyes
One of the first tunes I heard upon my return from Vietnam. My roommate, who turned me on to it also served with me from boot camp thru the Nam. The first thing he said was," make sure they play that at my funeral". It brings back extremely powerful memories.
Semper Fi to all served
I 2 first heard this in the corp
When life kicks my ass (and it surely does!), I plug in, crank it up and play this. This is the sound of immense pain and loss. Eddie and his guitar were one. It cries, screams and almost disintegrates in It's howling rage of pain. I surely know that feeling. We all do.
High Zenburgh I PLUG IN PINK FLOYD COMFORTABLY NUMB
You get beat up a lot, don't you.
It's ok. I'm 65 and I still got 2 mint copies. And a Sansui qrx system from Vietnam! Just be happy to hear it. Most don't know. Let's continue to share the journey. This is a soundtrack to life. Peace...
as the story goes, George Clinton asked Eddie to play like he had just been told his mother died...
@@stevendoles6913 I too first heard the analog original and was hooked, but the digital version elicits the same effect. I guess that's part of its virtuosity.
50 years ago today, this masterpiece was released.
RIP Edie Hazel, yet another under-appreciated black guitarist.
Sad, but true!
is he an underappreciated guitarist or an underappreciated BLACK guitarist. If it's the latter I blame the black people who listened to this music when it came out and didn't put their kids onto it.
Matthew McTighe I bet you blame black people for rainy days.
you guys are being stupid. listen, enjoy and shut the (expletive) up
youre right....sorry (no sarcasm)
When I close my eyes, I cry. My life plays like a movie. Around minute 5, I play out my addiction issues. The disjoined rhythm eventually lines back up several minutes later, where I feel my recovery play out. I worked hard to stay alive, only to experience this new world. Everyone stay safe out here...
Man you can't imagine how I feel you. You are not alone friend. We are not the only to ones. Addictions and everything. Dreams my friend haven't changed, like clouds seek a new tomorrow. This hasn't stopped yet. Whenever you are down, take a peek at the sky, seek a cloud - keep forming dreams like this song.
Beautiful of you to express yourself like that. You as well stay safe buddy!
Βασίλης Πολονύφης. I hope you understand how much your reply means to me...
Congratulations on your sobriety I'm proud of you
Well said. And yes, a Taurus does...
There's life before and then after discovering this song.
Caden Lopez I see what you did there
Great Pun 🙌
life is better with it, fo sho
The sound, there's something in this music that tugs. If I did not know better I say my soul, but I don't believe in that sort of thing. But there is something that certainly ,I do not know how to say this in English, but Wow
on god
I just heard this for the first time. I'm 50 damn years old.
I have no idea how it never crossed my path but I sought it out.
This is primal. It goes deep....now I'm just playing it over and over...
It wasn’t your time till now.
Now it’s my time I’m 51! Love this!
I am 65 and never heard this until just now. And I call myself a musician and music lover....sheeeeeeeet.....
There are quite a few different versions of this too.
I'm with you, just about to turn 52 and just now discovering this. Buckethead brought me here. Glad the tune did not pass me by.
This is a masterpiece! Got the album in 1973. Love it! Not too many people know Funkadelic, especially, Maggot Brain. ❤
Most songs are for your ears this one is for the soul
I gave birth listening to this song and I'm a man.
I knew it was possible!
My dad had this on vinyl and I never once heard him listen to it. Hearing this for the first time today I'm completely blown away by the genius of the composition. Simply amazing.
He didn't want you to see him cry.
If it is an original in good condition, it is worth $270...and your father obviously is not too fussed about it.
Whenever I listen to this I think of my grandma. She was like the repeating guitar, no matter how much things changed, all the chaos, the beauty, and the noise of life she remained constant. I can't listen to this song too much cause I just cry. But it's a good song, it's good to listen to, and it's a good cry. I miss you Nona.
Been abused, mistreated and damn near defeated but these brothers have introduced me to a funk I never can shake. Da funk is a blessing don't get it twisted family.
my positive energy goes to all who are reading this from the bottom of the pit. there is no light at the end of the tunnel. You are the light you seek. It comes from within. you are universally loved always 💓
Bless your fucking soul sir🤘✌️🤘
Dude you have no idea how badly I needed to read this. Thank you.
So what to do
I love Stevie Ray, Lead Belly, Robert Johnson and Jimi, but to date I have not heard a better guitar performance than this. Easily one of the top five best pieces of recorded music ever put to tape.
It's the best guitar solo ever recorded. Period.
Long live Eddie Hazel
Phenomenal!!.. You get your many flowers 💐 now 🥰😍
Try Bucketheads Soothsayer or Sail on Soothsayer ! You’ll love it
Bucket head- aunt suzie
I am 73 yrs old and Eddie Hazel and his version of Maggot Brain still give me goose bumps and chills every time I listen to it!!!
