Doghouse bass and Bull fiddle are my favourite names for upright bass. When Leo Fender marketed his Precision bass, he asked the people to get out of doghouse and play the Fender bass
It was presented to us in the third grade back in 1959 as the String Bass. I still have a copy of the "Rubank Elementary Method for String Bass." Produced by Sylvan D. Ward circa 1937! Still refer to it today, when it's time to get back to the basic fundamentals of this wonderful instrument.
Here in México usually it's called "Contrabajo", but also "Tololoche" this name always sounded funny to me 😂 Very nice groove you've got there! Thanks for your videos and keep on grooving!
Just a constant grin on my face through the entirety of those three and a half minutes. Especially the "no, I don't wish I played the flute..." Love your content and go Steelers.
I watch these just to learn music history and hear you play your sweet bass grooves - Paul you are still one of my all-time favorite musicians and humans.
As Gypsy musician playing Gypsy Jazz we call this Burgova = Parent of all basses! Thank you for your time and energy for posting this awsome video 😉👍 By the way you are awsome musician!
Thanks, Paul. I just spent a great week playing my bull fiddle in the pit band of a production of Chicago. It was a blast being the low-ender of the whole show. Oh yeah, I’ve also heard the bass referred to as The Tree.
Another great video, and funny! I like the moniker "fender bass" because to me it denotes a "style" of playing it, and same for "upright bass"...as far as what we get called? The Bus Driver is my favorite.
When I didn't have gigs I would sometimes play on my porch in a neighborhood that had a lot of drunk college kids walking through to get to a different bar. Every single night i did that at least one person said nice cello. I gave up correcting them and started replying with "thanks, glad you like it".
Anytime I hear someone refer to my instrument as a "cello", I simply give them a look as if they had just stepped in a huge pile of a well known substance some dog deposited on the lawn, as they eagerly walked into church, totally unaware. Don't have to say a word!
The base line you're playing reminded me a lot of the double-bass line from the Klint song Diamond, from the soundtrack to the movie Snatch. Those first few notes sounded so similar I just had to go listen to Diamond again. I always love it when a bass is so much of a certain songs - that without the bass it just wouldn't work. Had no idea there were so many names for all of these instruments.
What Is the Bass? I finally figured it out! The bass is the beating heart as we walk through our private journey thru the music. That's where we, on the other side of the sound, find our own personal resonance in joy and despair. Thanx for your insight magical musical sensei. #lovethischannel #learnsomemusic #makeasound #makemusic
I tend to switch between double bass and upright bass when referring to these. Also, "low end specialist" and "Lords of the low frequencies" are brilliant titles
Great content as usual, PD keep doing what your doing bro you've definitely enlightend my world and knowledge on the bass more than you ever could imagine just appreciate all that you do for us bassist... by the way Stingis a very awesome bass God, Thunder Thumbs, The Hansolor, James Jamerson, Larry Graham too name a few thanks
Having grown playing upright all the way through grade school. The first 40 seconds of this video was a checklist for me. Doghouse is a new one for me I'll remember that.
Nevermind the name, thank you for using the proper contraction for "you" "are". I see "your" improperly used so much in it's place in RUclips comments, I was beginning to think I was the one who flunked elementary school language. 😕
I will never again forget "lords of the low frequencies", it's awesome. I learned to call it "contrabaixo" (Brazil), and the electric bass, as simply "baixo".
Can you please talk about upright pickups, pre amps, amps etc? Everything to do with playing a large venue and/or a loud band. I am very interested in the Krivo magnetic pickup, assuming the string spacing works for my 1/2 size.
I play in a duo. My bass player (and guitar player on certain songs) IS the essence of our sound. I tell him that all the time. He plays a Fender acoustic through an Acoustic 100 amp. Tone for days. He put a cajon snare device just below the strings so he can emulate snare hits. He's a machine!
My little brother played the stand up bass back in the day. Thankfully my father drove a 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger. The trunk was so big it could hold the bass in it with room to spare.
In spanish, this instrument goes by, at least, three official names: "contrabajo", "bajo" and also "violón" -because of its tuning, in fourths, which is derived from the viola da gamba, as the guitar; "violón" means ‘big viola’. Great video... and great playing! Any of your videos in your channel is a treat. Congrats!
Must say I played a half size bass recently and it sounded good enough or just good . Somewhere in size between a fender precision and three quarter upright . Sounded regular
I remember when I decided to learn bass about... 25 years ago when I was in 6th grade. I wanted to play in the orchestra, but I didn't want to play violin (5th grade I had tried it but I was no good at it) so when I started middle school and joined orchestra, on our first class my teacher (who was a symphony orchestra violinist) asked me what instrument I wanted, and without even knowing what it was, I said bass (after asking what the options were) since I'd never heard of that instrument. I'm 5'7'' as a fully grown adult, so you can imagine I was a short king when I was 11. Next class they gave me my instrument and it was almost twice my size lol, but I loved it and continued to play in orchestras, going all the way to state orchestra before I graduated highschool. Sadly I stopped playing bass after graduating since they are super expensive, but throughout college continued to play music as a guitarist. Recently I got a bass guitar that I fixed and have begun sight reading bass sheet music again. Hope someday I have north of 1k expendable income to get a dub though :( Awesome groove in the background btw!
...and his was referred to as the "Maiden's Head" bass, because of its hand carved female head in place of the traditional scroll. My all time most favorite bassist. May he rest in peace. ✝️
I love the double bass, I play cello, and I honestly kinda wish I played bass, but one day I will learn it. I love the cello just as much if not more, but I sometimes wish I went with it. But cello is so fun
What’s your favourite non-bassy, non-stringed instrument? Mine must be the trumpet or trombone. It fits so well together with bassy jazzy or drumnbassy tunes
You need to listen to Chris Wood and the Wood Brothers playing The Muse it starts with Chris bowing the upright, so damn beautiful. Medski, Martin and Wood, Chris Wood.
Gaby- that would be contrabajo , ( with work),not contrabass mi hermano. In Brasil they often refer to electric bass as contrabaixo, I guess because it covers the same range
Funny that this came up recently when my band was doing the liner notes for our new record. There’s one bluegrass tune on it that I played this beast on. We ended up putting Standup bass on the credits. I wanted Doghouse 😜but it didn’t fly. I wonder if different names are used for different genres?
Man, great tone & feel. True story. I am getting a physical at work. The doc is pulling on my fingers. He sez..."Do you play the guitar or the violin"? I kinda mimic me playing an electric bass & he sez..."So, you play the guitar. I play the violin" (him mimic-ing a guy playing the URB). I have heard the URB called the bass viol. :-0
Here in France we often call double-basses the "Grand Mother". I actually call mine "Mémé", which means "Grand Ma" :)
Called Grandma in Switzerland too
Ah, maybe that explains why the bassist for Barenaked Ladies calls his "Gramma"!
Yupp, the "Oma" (grandma) in Germany, too.
I call mine Talulah....
Doghouse bass and Bull fiddle are my favourite names for upright bass. When Leo Fender marketed his Precision bass, he asked the people to get out of doghouse and play the Fender bass

Thanks for your videos and keep on grooving!
The bass solo "soundtrack" of this video was just as dope as your commentary!
Thank you, brother, may I have another(solo acoustic bass solo)?👍🏽🤗😎
I always like Watt's "thunderbroom". Excellent little change of pace on this one!
In Germany, "Oma" (which means grandmother) is also very common. Often pronounced "Omma" with a very short O then...
Was labersch du, wir sage zu dem Kontrabass
My favorite post of yours so far. Thank you.
Being bass player is like being referee: if people is paying too much attention, you are making too many mistakes! That's a bass player's life! :)
My favorite part of this video is your playing of the vertical bass.
LOL
Just a constant grin on my face through the entirety of those three and a half minutes. Especially the "no, I don't wish I played the flute..."
Love your content and go Steelers.
I hope no Bengals fans come your way
The Upright Bass is my choice and that groove that you are playing is “Funky Funk And Driving “
Solid Paul!!!
It STAAAAAANNNNNKX!!!!😖😖😖😖😖😖😖🤘
Can find no such song
would love to play that groove, I almost have it figured out but would be nice if there's a tab for it
This is so great, Paul!!
I watch these just to learn music history and hear you play your sweet bass grooves - Paul you are still one of my all-time favorite musicians and humans.

The go to channel for bassists that want to know a bit more about bass and cool background infos.
Happy new year and keep the groove.
Double bass and the beast is my favourite because one's classic and the other makes it sound cool
Its about time ya put that well crafted instrument on display for the world to see! If I had one I'd leave it out like an art piece!
You almost got me , the instrument looked suspiciously like a 3/4 sized bass violin , to me , good tone , you sound great !
I’m so glad I started following you! Love the names of the BASS!
And thanks for playing during the video. I’ve heard that lick you were playing. I myself have an electric bass but I haven’t played in years
Damn that groove behind the narration! 🔥
Thanks, Paul. I just spent a great week playing my bull fiddle in the pit band of a production of Chicago. It was a blast being the low-ender of the whole show. Oh yeah, I’ve also heard the bass referred to as The Tree.

Still learning to play an electric, but damn that beauty keeps calling my name......

Having someone say "Nice cello" is basically a rite of passage as an upright player.
The base line you're playing reminded me a lot of the double-bass line from the Klint song Diamond, from the soundtrack to the movie Snatch. Groovy groove. Love it!
Awesome video. I call it a double bass. Thank you for the grooving solo too.
Very very very very good!
Thank you very much!
Another excellent video; love this channel!
In Spanish it is called contrabajo and Mr. Cachao who invented the Mambo one of the best, in Cuba it is widely used in traditional music groups
that groove! 💥
Bajo de arco in the Philippines, I love it's sound, so smooth and full.

Hilarious! So well said - so well played. Thank you, Paul. 𝄢𝄢𝄢𝄢𝄢
Yo what is it that you're playing in the background?? It's great
the glue that holds it all together
Your bass and playing sounds nice!!
I tend to switch between double bass and upright bass when referring to these.

Good to hear you playing! Always good to hear you talk, but for some reason, I have not heard you stretch out in these videos.
uuff, "the wood" sounds damn mighty and cool!
Having grown playing upright all the way through grade school. The first 40 seconds of this video was a checklist for me. Doghouse is a new one for me I'll remember that.
You're awesome! And that Am groove....whew!
Nevermind the name, thank you for using the proper contraction for "you" "are". I see "your" improperly used so much in it's place in RUclips comments, I was beginning to think I was the one who flunked elementary school language. 😕
I need to here more of that funky groove
"go hug a bass player" PREACH! we're the best! (well I'm not, but I digress)
I will never again forget "lords of the low frequencies", it's awesome. I learned to call it "contrabaixo" (Brazil), and the electric bass, as simply "baixo".
Love it!
Bass players always make the song have feeling or pure funk. the is another guy that needs love as well, Mark "Drac" Adams from Slave.
Mark Hicks was Drac and Mark Adams is and will always be THE HANSOLOR
@@HenryMSmith-zq1vu True true... I stand corrected. But, the bass is definitely the heartbeart of the groove.

I used to work with a guy and when he would see my fender he would always say “ so, I see you brought your strap on “. 😃
I LOVE this!! Hug a bass player!!
"Big Bertha" was the nickname given to my bass by my old "gig spouse".... Mike Watt refers to his bass as the "thud stick".
That’s one seriously Phat groove!
😋
My little brother played the stand up bass back in the day. Thankfully my father drove a 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger. The trunk was so big it could hold the bass in it with room to spare.
String bass! The Back Snapper!
I’m not sure why they call it a String Bass, maybe to distinguish it from the Fin and Gills Bass? At least all basses have scales! 😛
In spanish, this instrument goes by, at least, three official names: "contrabajo", "bajo" and also "violón" -because of its tuning, in fourths, which is derived from the viola da gamba, as the guitar; "violón" means ‘big viola’. Violon Means Violin In French
@@thischannelisalreadydead Yes, that's right. French and spanish are different languages -as you certainly know.
Doghouse is a personal fave.
In my part of the world (south-eastern Europe, the Balkan peninsula) it is commonly known as "The Bear" (Mečka)
this guy just addressed every bassists number one problems in a single video. if one more person goes “omg you play the cello?” im going to scream
Must say I played a half size bass recently and it sounded good enough or just good . Somewhere in size between a fender precision and three quarter upright . Sounded regular
A drummer friend likes to call it "The Tree" my mother used to call it the 🐘Elephant
I remember this English RUclips bassist who'd call his subscribers "Fat Stringers", always really liked that one :)
Man.....I loved this video. Lol lol Took everyone to school. Lol

I always called my upright the 'King Daddy of Pain' 🤷🏻♂
Great music lesson! Have a nice day.
Man you were pl-ayin' that Bass in the back ground!
My bass is named Paul Chambers
...and his was referred to as the "Maiden's Head" bass, because of its hand carved female head in place of the traditional scroll. My all time most favorite bassist. May he rest in peace. ✝️
Hello, I just subscribed to your channel. Have you ever heard the name TOLOLOCHE?
The Bass is the name I called this instrument.
My main bass was made in Germany in the mid 1930s. She is Brunhilde or Hilde for short.
Even being masculine noun in Spanish.. La barca (rowboat) ... El abuelo roncador (snoring grandpa).. El perchero.. Hat holder? hanger?
For me the name "Anchor" says it all in that a good bassline holds the whole song together. Is there such a thing as an electric upright bass?
I get asked constantly if I'm carrying a firearm.🙄
Another great video, my man! Thank you.
This is a great channel.
I used to double on flute so, when someone said “I bet you wish you played flute!” I’d say
“I *DO* play flute.”
"Big Lady", as in the reference to playing an upright, "Dancin' with the big lady"
When I was in High School, my music teacher called it an "ARCO BASS".
Arco only refers to style of play. It also shines in pizzicato, as I'm sure you know.
Good bass line!, in Latin America it is only contrabass, that would also mean "with work" haha
Con trabajo, podemos tocar bien el contrabajo
We are tha "WOOFER"movers!!!🎸
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🎶
I love the double bass, I play cello, and I honestly kinda wish I played bass, but one day I will learn it. I love the cello just as much if not more, but I sometimes wish I went with it. But cello is so fun
About the time we had some love.
Lords Of The Low Frequencies. Love that one 😎
I thought that was Stanley Clarke's personal nickname, given to him by the NYC press...
What’s your favourite non-bassy, non-stringed instrument? Mine must be the trumpet or trombone. It fits so well together with bassy jazzy or drumnbassy tunes
And especially hold the door open for the bassist if there are stairs!

Gaby- that would be contrabajo , ( with work),not contrabass mi hermano. In Brasil they often refer to electric bass as contrabaixo, I guess because it covers the same range
Cool, I did not know double referred to how the music for it is written. At least I know the reason for my favorite name for it now.
I was over at a friends house one time and their dad kept referring to the upright as a "pig fiddle."
Double bass! Made me smile. R e s p e c t.
I love it
Funny that this came up recently when my band was doing the liner notes for our new record. There’s one bluegrass tune on it that I played this beast on. We ended up putting Standup bass on the credits. I wanted Doghouse 😜but it didn’t fly. I wonder if different names are used for different genres?
was waiting for The Doghouse 😁
The Thunder Broom
I'm french and here the regular name for it is Contrebasse
In Spanish contrabajo
