So true. And notice that he plucks down near the end of the fingerboard. The closer to the bridge the less "round" is the attack. Notice that Jaco plays almost over the bridge pickup which makes the notes "pop" in a staccato manner. I've seen so many video's of electric bass players demoing upright basses, or even fretless basses, playing in the middle of the fretboard. The notes all blend into each other...
Haha! Don't worry mate, It will take you ALL those years again to master it. It's not an electric. It's a different instrument all together, and the another life to master the bow! But GO FOR IT regardless. It's way more satisfying than an electric. yes, I am a double bass player. This is good stuff.
The Double bass is honestly great, I’ve only played for around 5 years and I haven’t tried much jazz or funk but so far even classical is just absolutely amazing. It’s a really great instrument that can be used in so many types of bands and groups. The sound is beautiful, pizz and bowed are different but equally great for their own purposes.
This was FAB. Tnx! Only seeing this now in 2021 because of interest in a EUB. Chris seems to be a very fine teacher who is very knowledgeable and pleasant to listen to. This Yamaha sounds incredible btw...
This is amazing. I was just trying to figure out a Bernie Edwards line the other day and how he articulated. It's about the attack!! Answered my question.
The bass he's using is the Yamaha slb300 pro. I just recently got the slb300sk which is the baseline model and it's fantastic. You can even play orchestral stuff with a bow on it
This might be the extra push to get me wanting to sign-up for the course!! Love this, and I've been looking for something like this for a while now. Thanks for the share!
i thoroughly enjoyed. thanks . I Play bass but i dont slap. i try to create more of an upright sound when possible.. i do like to swing and groove. i unfortunately don't play often w drummer. but i'm ok with it. I consider myself a functional bass player. i'm a singer...oh yea cant wait to listen to Ray Brown.. thanks for the tip!
Strange...I was just listening to Miles Mosley (with Kamasi Washington Band ) playing upright today and thinking how does he get that thing to cut through the mix...here's the answer.
I had the chance to meet and open up for Miles Mosely's band over a year ago. I got to play through his amp and he showed me his pedal board. That guy truly puts a different feel on the upright
Wide, edge, cuts, round, anchor, vibe, funky, lay down in the crease, heavy, daddy’s home… we are in desperate need of words when we try to describe music. (Same can be said for taste and flavors in cooking)
So simple, it's profound. I've been a huge fan of Ryuichi Sakamoto's since discovering YMO recently, Chris' collaborating with Sakamoto is another great reason for checking him out Also, will this 3rd degree indirect mention of YMO ever get Scott to talk about the master of the low end that is Haruomi Hosono?
lyrasimo Mate my double bass will sustain for days! Get some Schertler Full Compass 180's or Spiro Solo's and you'll be muting everything. I think you may have been around orchestral strings - designed for bow. Or players who want a thud thud thud.
Great playing... I just felt he attacks the strings just too much... A bit more than needed IMHO... thus the low end got killed a bit, I guess... But truly impeccable approach and attitude. His note accuracy really felt like "big daddy's home"
How you attack the note makes a huge difference in feel, absolutely. This guy is clearly a master of tone and groove.

thanks elon
😂😂😂
Oof
Omg that was on point! Lmao!
so this must be Mars Groove!
"You have no doubt, daddy's home when he puts down the down beat."
Bruh, that quote....I've been searching for that quote my whole bass career.
It's the only one you need, my friend
Downbeat Dad
This is how I talk to my fiance
Daddy's right in that crease.
I love the way stand up sounds in a funk setting. Such a killer tone.
Damn, I could watch / listen to this guy play all day.
In love with the upright bass... 😍 N obviously he got the groove.... 👌🕺
It's always to hear a solid foundation bass style that know when and when NOT to step out of the box.
Great lesson! Very useful tips. More Upright Bass lessons!
Funky Elon Musk
Funky Musk........Hey, that would be a good meme for someone to do....
I was thinking the same at the beginning of the video 😁
But the bass of Elon would surely have been electric 🤔
That sounds like a 70's-era after shave.
@@mr.stingray8709 it is, actually. Electric Upright.
Great, now I need to buy an upright bass. My wife is gonna kill me, thanks, Scott.

@@willb3698 I play bass guitar now, but I used to play violin. I wonder if some of the knowledge carries over but I honestly doubt it
@@pongugy9828 I used to play the cello, thought the stretch was tough when I first learn... tried the DB, it's 10x the stretch! 😵💫

Scott thanks for turning me on to Chris.......................His approach is so up lifting!!!!!
What a bass master and one hell of a funky boi 10/10 that solo slapped hard as well amazing stuff i need an upright now 🔥
This is probably the best SBL video I’ve seen. Wonderful stuff. 👍👍👍
This is amazing. I was just trying to figure out a Bernie Edwards line the other day and how he articulated. It's about the attack!! Answered my question.
I just recently got an electric upright bass SO LOVE THIS !!!!!!!!!!!
Who the hell clicked 'Unlike" ???? Killer video Scott! Thanks
Jealous people who can't even hold down a single note bass riff in the key of E.... On the E string.
Maybe, it was someone who read all the dumb comments about what the guy looked like. Personally, I think he looks like Keanu Reeves
I've met Chris a couple of times through work, funky to see him here!
Thanks a lot for your lesson! I appreciated so much your tips, I love the upright bass and also the funk. This is a lovely sound. Outstanding.
Super valuable lesson; the message is in the envelope. Thanks Scott and Chris - much appreciated :D

🔥🔥🔥
I was thinking of buying an upright yesterday and voila Scott's Bass Lessons has a video on it in my RUclips feed!
"Lucky enough to fly Chris over here......to Leeds" hahaha. You're Brave, Scott.
I have the same Yamaha silent bass so this was cool to watch
that really help Thanks Elon! nice video, its a must watch. really good stuff. triple thumbs up
CMD is just funky awesome!
This might be the extra push to get me wanting to sign-up for the course!! Love this, and I've been looking for something like this for a while now. Thanks for the share!
I’m really feeling this guy
Hot Damn, Holy Smokes 👌❤👍Great vid!!!
Thank you Scott and Chris! Great Video!
Great funky groove on an upright. 👍😁
Wow, amazing stuff, and I love how he snuck up a quote from "Summertime" in there! Nice catch Scott, I'll probably have to check this lesson out.
Great stuff, Chris! Looking forward to seeing you next week! :)
Oh man, that was incredible.
Why do I watch these videos? They make me realize how much more I need to practice.
THAT SOLO THOUGH!!
11:52 summertime theme in the solo part 👏🏼
Great video. Up close like that is...oh, man. Or...oh, minh!
Inspiring stuff. Superb.
Damn... amazing playing!
Chris Minh Doky (because his name isn't in the title or description)
wow this guy is incredible
Please have a double bass series.
Just fantastic!!!!
Everyone is comparing him to Elon Musk, but I'm seeing Adam Neeley in like 15 years. So, I think we've discovered that Adam Neeley looks like Elon
Adam Neeley? Yes, I really admire his musical knowledge - but I don't see what you say. Too cold.
lmao
Lol I play kontrabass but I want to start learning bass guitar, I'm SO hyped C:
Should be a pretty easy transition since all your notes are laid out for you
The interesting thing is Oscar Peterson was one of Billy Joel's idols. I'm going to try this. Thank you for the great lesson!!!
Thanks Elon, very cool!

If you like funky upright then listen to Sabrosa by The Beastie Boy’s. Yauch played a mean upright.
Can you do a vid just talking your story and how you came to be a session musician and what that journey was like?
Excellent 👍

Контрабас супер !
been eyeing blady bass at local pawn, vs strapping elec onto stand🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
So to wrap this up... funk, edge, anchor, space, daddy.
As a bass player, I learned a lot from your videos, thanks Charles..ehh I meant Scott.
What an upright beast
Awesome stuff!
Super dope!
Would like to see this guy live. Maybe a double header with Doug Johns.
This is the essence of bass...
It was an eye-opener, Scott? You mean ear-opener, surely?!
love the sound but i hate the no sustain on upright basses

My upright will out-sustain any bass guitar ... with my bow!
The first thought - "OMG, Elon Musk's good at contrabass"
It's a common bass face, you might check Adam neely. lol
Thank you!
Thanks for tuning in!
Amazing
>> farout !! thx !
I’m assuming that’s not just midi on the organ because it sounded really organic, so anyone know who that was a recording of?
Finally !
@4:54 sounds like Remco 👍
what is a crease? what is an edge? what is the width of the music?
3:12
me
Lmao
Oh hell yea!
This cat is damn good
Huge vid.
What's the brand of EUB is he playing?
It seems it's a Yamaha Silent Bass SLB300 (Chris Minh Doki is endorsed by Yamaha, as far as I know)
Thanks!
@@jeanclaudebossonney7520 It's actually a Yamaha SLB200LTD. You can tell because of the dark cherry finish.
Just. Wow.
Whats the different between Yamaha Silent 200 vs the new 300 upright bass?
Indeed funky
Sometimes I stand my acoustic bass upright and jam...
Front feel. Funky!
What EUB is he playing please?
This is what funk used to sound like before we had Bass Guitars.
Funk didn't exist without bass guitars lol
Cool
That EUB sounds great! What is it?
It's a Yamaha SLB 200
Somebody knows the name of the soundtrack at the end of the video???
4:30 hmmmm
Sounds familiar
Tooooo familiar
What brand/model of bass is this???
amazing bass player! But why his name is not the headline of this video? who is it? that should the the main point I think, sorry Scott ;)
btw it is Chris Minh Doky
Just like Bootsie said!
