Damnit you tube... this is been in my suggested videos for months now. Suddenly I'm trying to make a damn boat. Seems this dude knows his stuff though. Interesting bordem here
wife: daryl pls come to dinner now, it's been 4 weeks daryl: just a moment honey I need to finish this diaphragm for my putt putt boat so it can beat the titanic and be the fastest ever
I had one as a child, over 70 years ago...it was a "shop bought" one, all tinplate, and used a bit of candle as a heat source... but they work even better with a little spirit burner. I had a lot of fun with it, and they were quite common back in the late 1940s and early 50s. I hadn't seen one in 50 years, and stumbled upon them again on UTube, and tried to describe them to younger folk who seemed to think I was making it all up. Must make one and show them... :-)
Well done! That baby really moves! I’ve got a dozen or so putt putt boats and the Titanic is slowest of them all. My oldest one is 60+ years old and is by far the fastest. My tugs, speed boats and ferry look great and are lots of fun to run.
I know this is an old video, and my knowledge on the subject is close to nonexistent, but do you think more power could be made by engineering the boiler into something like an hourglass shape, adding a separate intake pipe and placing Tesla valves on both the intake and the exhaust to force the liquid to flow through the boiler instead of in and out, thus turning the engine into more of a ramjet than a pulsejet? The boiler shape should be such that it essentially traps a pocket of water in a hot zone, possibly allowing it to superheat instead of just boiling.
Your ideas have some merit however the object is to make a more powerful putt putt engine, not to make a different kind of engine. Any other type of internal or external heat engine could be used with much better results. I encourage you to build your design although if I was going to build a pulse jet I think an internal combustion type would be more productive. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Daryl Foster, thanks for the reply! You're right - it wouldn't be a putt putt engine anymore. For a pure design, different boiler geometries might still be worth pursuing.. As for my idea of continuous water flow, I'll need to start playing with a flow simulator :)
I am looking at building one myself for a school project. What do you recommend for designs or concepts to keep in mind? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
+Liesel Beckett Hi Liesel. The various types require various skills. I suggest you watch my how to videos and see how your skills match up with what is required to do the build. For a very simple little engine build visit the sciencetoymaker site. Good luck.
It vvas a good Idea to use the string fixed to the center "island" to keep them going in a circle . I vvould've tried puting a rudder bent to one side. I'm really eager to try this vv/my nephevv. TY for posting
How does a put-put engine produce thrust? I accept that while it is accelerating water out of the backwards-pointing tubes, the equal and opposite reaction will be forwards, but then the water cools a bit, and new water is sucked into the tubes, so it is moving towards the boiler and towards the bow, and at that time, its equal and opposite reaction is backwards. Why don't they cancel each other?
I even did RUclips vids on that. My last employer said, I got a job if your able to get this trailer running, ended up getting called every time one of his trailers went down in the feild. Like a mcgivereyou know.
I seen a design for a simple heat engine useing cork and a worm with tea candle it stalled too but they had the tubes bent in the same direction in the water Obviously one has to drawl though was thinking what if it intakes at the front then the worm is designed in a coil that raises over the flame the out put at the top
You kept talking about your boat and the speed and this and that but if you had shown us how it worked, the mechanisms, how it's made. That would have gotten you more likes I guess.
It isn't a "How to" video as you can tell by the title. I have more than 30 videos here so you could learn more if you like by watching some of them. If you use search you will find lots of information on how they work both video and text but be warned that most of the explanations have errors. Thanks for watching and commenting.
are you telling me that boat is not even going 2mph? it SEEMS like its really cooking along! very very cool little boat. I have always wanted to make an RC putt putt boat and have always wondered if solar power could be used as the heat source instead of a candle (making it run essentially forever as long as there is enough sunlight) using a Fresnel lens to focus the sunlight.
You are right. It does look faster. In my video at ruclips.net/video/Fc4VoYEMTa4/видео.html you can see what 2.1 MPH looks like at that scale. Solar power can run one of these boats however the problem is that the power output is so small from these engines that the added weight of the power plant made it a very slow boat. Someone did build one that he could ride in but it was hopeless I'm told re power. Give it a try, Maybe you are smarter than him. Thanks for commenting.
I made a solar putt-putt with a Fresnel lens and I just tested it. Not very impressive so far but it works. I can't put the link here but you may find it on my channel.
Does the temperature of the water effect the performance of the put put engine. It would be fascinating to see how much faster it would be if the boat was say in a pool of water at 200°. Would the water flash off faster inside the engine?
you didn't have to remake another video saying "maybe". i believe you. i recently bought my own on ebay for 5.00$ fast or slow there all fascinating. i enjoyed watching your video. id like to see more of your creations.
Hi Daryl. Iv just recently discovered put put boats. I really like your designs for the engines but im really struggling with the soldering. A lot of people use a simple coil engine design. May I ask your opinion on this design? As I have yet to make my solder stick sufficiently this might be the easiest until I get better at it. anyway thanks for the videos and info you are a true craftsman.
Coil engines are good. Just limited as how much power they will make. My" how to" videos might help you and soldering does take a bit of practice. Have fun and thanks for watching and commenting.
Ever considered using hydrofoil tech on one to reduce hull drag and increasing the power to accomplish faster speed while remaining Putt-Putt? I’m new myself and have no clue about it but Hydrofoil tech would reduce hull friction and drag.
I will someday build even faster put put boats when I have a shop to machine stuff in. Higher temps, better heat transfer, more shaved off weight. Maybe one way valves
Regrettably they do not scale up along predictable lines. The power output is very small. I have built engines with 3 times the power but the added weight means they do not go faster. Watch more of my videos and see more.
This might be a very uneducated guess, but at some point the required amount of heat will be far too much for the materials and such and require heavier material so power to weight ratio dies. Or effciency perhaps will be null at that scale.
As always you lead in Put Put design and advocation by a wide margin!! I should think I will never see, a faster Put Put boat , from anyone other than thee!!

I'm making plans for a life-sized pop pop boat either propane or fire fire idk yet still planning but it'd be a small have a nice area for a single bed and I can take it down shallow inlets and what not, plan plan plan that's all I gotta do is plan
Hi Daryl; Just wanting to let you know . I started building my "V'" 80 cylinder pop pop engine to go in my 10 foot aluminum John boat. I am designing it to easily be expanded do 160 cylinders. The 80 cylinder engine will be about 32" long , 32" wide , and a bout 28" high. And should weigh less than 25 pounds.
No idea what a putt putt boat is...but they look cool. How long do they run for? Would be cool to set one up in a kiddie pool and just hangout. If only it could carry a beer. You could have one on it and just reach down and pick it up as it comes by.
You can talk to me right here....or....on the discussion page.....or....on the "About" page you can send a private message. Have you watched all of my videos? Just about all I know is in them.

An interesting challenge to build the fastest putt-putt-boat. There are two ways for speed: Increase the size of the power unit, or increase th efficiency. The keyword for efficiency maybe the Tesla-Valve. It works without any moving part!
I got ideas but it would have to be on a larger scale. Using compressor tanks and propane. For every tube put a propane tank. I’m pretty shure I could build something that would put peoples lives in jeopardy.

I have found the absolute edge of the internet.
Thank you sir.
Yes..... You can stop now.
Daryl probably never imagined people from 2021 would still watch this video and think "Hmm, thats cool"
I want to see someone build a full sized putt-putt boat, big enough to to hold at least one person.
Lets do it 🤣
That would be great

Not necessarily, because the hour glass shape would hinder the flow of gases exiting the pipe ultimately making it slower

Clean your contact surfaces with fine sandpaper or emery cloth. Also, I don't think aluminum will take solder, make sure you are using copper and tin.
How you made your science project
Ever considered using hydrofoil tech on one to reduce hull drag and increasing the power to accomplish faster speed while remaining Putt-Putt? I’m new myself and have no clue about it but Hydrofoil tech would reduce hull friction and drag.
there is likely not enough speed
Can you use a hot coal instead of open flam
wonder if you could utilize a reed valve like a pulse jet.
Holy smokes, Daryl Foster, you sound exactly like Baz Luhrmann, the “Wear Sunscreen” guy!
dude,
You really should have made the fast boat from red & white Budweiser cans. Maybe not as fast as the Budweiser boat, even at scale, lol
would more heat help the engine? and what fuel are you burning to power this?
If only it were so simple. Heat is critical and both too much and too little will stop the engine from running. Methyl alcohol is the fuel.
Its not about speed and power !!itz all about itz puk puk sound , looks and realistic feel
it's about drive, it's about power
How fast does your Putt Putt Boat sink?

Daryl, your putt putt boats are pretty cool. you should build a boat that looks like something out of a Dr. Seuss book

probably 5 feet of piping coiled into a tiny boat. it would be really inefficient though.

Those guys in India really nailed it on the Titanic there. I had to look twice to make sure it wasn't the real thing.
Interesting video. But perhaps next time, you should show the boat close up and explain how one works.
Well done
dude find a way to reshape the hull so less drag is added it really works
You need to come up with something better than that. See this video ruclips.net/video/HimvaG7suQc/видео.html Thanks for the thought and the comment.
Very nice work! i wonder how scalable this is. you will probably get some issues with the heatsource

why can't you harness the pressure to turn a prop on a reduction gear
But then you'd have moving parts and it's no longer a putt putt boat. Also to turn a prop think you'd need a much more complex piston type system.
