- I'm going to be install new headlight bulbs in my 2018 F150. I've decided to upgrade my stock headlight bulbs from the original bulbs to Sylvania Silverstar Bulbs. These are my favorite option for stock replacement. I'm going to watch through installing these headlight bulbs in my 2018 F150. This is the quickest way to replace a headlight bulb.
This process is the same for trucks from 2015 all the way to 2020.
At the end of the video, I cover tips and tricks from the process. Make sure you watch all the way to the end!

Your high beam (9005)is the bottom light, your low beam is the top light(H11)
Confirmed. The high beams are on the bottom. Low beams on top
@@guitarislife0182
Low has a black painted cap.
I know this for the future as I was a dumbass and put my 9005 where the lows are supposed to be
Theyre physically different sizes. You literally cant fuck it up.
Video was great. In no time at all you taught me I need to take my truck and have someone else do it.
Haha. That’s funny. Sometimes it is easier to have someone else do it.
Honestly I replaced both bulbs about 1-1/2 years ago with a brighter bulb at the quick lane auto which is Fords oil change place and it was a couple hundred bucks for the bulbs and labor. Obviously they’re much higher than probably any other shop in town but at the time I just needed to get it done but now I just had 1 of the bulbs go out. Not worth it to me to take it back so I’m going to try this myself. I just have no idea what bulbs the put it but I think it was just the next step up from the standard halogen.
Yea it isn't worth the money for some of the higher end bulbs. When you look at their lifespan, they typically say 90 hours... which isn't a lot of time when you figure your truck probably has DRL.
@@SmackeysGarage well let’s not mention the fact they’re halogen lights to begin with.
Omg that’s my thought too😂🤣
This is my first Ford Truck. What a giant pain in the butt just to change a lightbulb. Leave it to ford to make a simple fix require three plus different tools and the removal of body parts. My Toyota Tundra, zero tools and about 15 seconds to replace. Thank you for the very well made tutorial.
You are welcome and Yea I agree. Hardest head light bulb I’ve ever had to change.
GMs are like that too. Toyota doesn't play that game.
Ford as usual made a simple job harder because of the fenderwell cover
On the positive side, up here in the north east those fender well covers keep all the salt out of our engine bays. There could be a better design though I agree. A two piece cover would be great!
@@SmackeysGarage I added rears which work great , headlight bulbs should be able to access from the top, just my two cents
Not ideal but I’ve definitely seen worse. A Chevy Malibu requires the bumper to be removed.
I hate euro cars now but I owned one and it had a little part of the fender liner that popped out so you could access the headlights. Those Germans thought of everything
Much easier with a leveled truck too. Thanks for the video. Wanted to install LED bulbs but didn’t want to take apart the entire front end to do it
You're welcome Allen! Glad you were able to do it without taking everything apart.
How did everything work out with the LED bulbs and where did you buy it from? Did you need to add anything to make the LED bulbs work without blowing a fuse?
That was exceptional. If the pay wasn't so shitty, I'd recommend you get into teaching. Thanks for taking the time. Such a thorough explanation and demonstration. A+
Ha, thanks Freedom Enthusiast. I appreciate the kind words.
Thank you kind Sir your video was extremely helpful. I knocked it out in just under an hour, would have been sooner if I had that 7/32. Great detailed instructions from start to finish, I've been riding with one headlight for about three months dreading replacing the bulb. Thanks again for the fastest solution.
Glad it helped you Leslie! An hour isn’t bad especially if you don’t have that 7/32 size.
If you pop the hood and use a 10mm socket to take the headlights themselves out it’s faster😂 like less than a 15 minute job. And you’re not going to get scratched up from that liner
@@connerboitz3506 will try that
Good video. worked and was able to get the lights changed out pretty quick.
Glad to hear! Thanks for the feedback!
Great video with clear instructions. It may seem like it is a long process since you have to remove the fenderwell cover but it's only five screws on each side.
Thanks for the feedback! You are right that as soon as you know what you’re doing and have the right angles to get the screws it isn’t bad.
Thank you Sir! Had to replace the bulb on my son's truck and your instructions worked perfectly. However, I did need to remove that top pin in order to get enough clearance to reach the top bulb but it wasn't that big of a deal.
Glad the video helped! Doing it with that top pin out does make the room much better to get to it.
Thank you! You’re doing Gods work I was going crazy trying to figure it out!
No problem! Thanks for the feedback. Definitely not straight forward unless you know what you are looking for.
You the man, bro. Thanks for the upload. Just got it done in under an hour. 🙌🏻👍🏼🎉
Glad I could help!
No problem installing these bulbs on having watched your superb video. Ford did a nice job allowing access and changing out these bulbs as well. Thanks Dave from Ontario
Thanks Dave! Glad the video was helpful! It’s definitely easier to do after you’ve seen someone go through the process.
Considering you have to go through the wheel well, or take apart the whole front end per Ford, I wouldn't give any credit to Ford on this one.
Thanks for the video. Wasn't too bad just awkward. I did break the clip off one of low beam connectors. I hope it doesn't vibrate out.
You can get the clips cheaply online or through a Ford dealer. If you ever stop by I'd ask for one.
Thank you! did them both in bout 30 min 🙏🏾
Awesome! Glad to hear.
huh?!?! I spend an hour trying to twist that lower bulb out of the socket and just couldn't get my wrist in there and apply enough torque to unlock it no matter how I tried. Maybe my six decade old wrist. It's not easy! Didn't even try the upper bulb. Just gave up to try on a warmer day.
So much easier then taking the grill off. Thank god I found this video
Glad I could help Matt. I couldn't imagine having to take off the grill to replace the light bulb.
I was just about to remove the grill
@MegaLockedown I just did that for another project and it is a much bigger job going that way.
@SmackeysGarage wow..I will definitely do it this way going forward. I was just saying like the other person, my Silverado was a lil tight but I could reach in and get to it without much fuss. Ford is immature
This is the most helpful video for replacing these light bulbs. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful. You are welcome!
Helpful video, just a couple of additional hints. The connections on each of the low and high bulbs are different. High beam has plastic connectors on the plastic surround (below the silicone weather seal). The low beam bulb has metal connectors inside the weather seal. I found the low beam (especially the passenger side) harder to put in and turn into position. Working left handed was more difficult. Also, wire length seems to vary by truck. My low beam wires were very short, so short I couldn’t pull it out to see the bulbs I was removing/connecting. Look where the bulb plastic lock is on the new bulb and feel for it when removing old and connecting new. Hopefully you have more wire. Thanks for the video, saved time and money!
It seems like I did have a little more wire than you but it was still a struggle. Thanks for providing these extra hints. I'm sure they will be useful to others!
Same..ugh
Honestly, with the amount of info on the internet to reference. Everything is so easy to fix
Thank you so much I was ready to pull the grill off lol 😂
Glad you didn’t have to do that!!!
Nice simple video. You earned a new subscriber
Thanks! Welcome!
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Very helpful. I’m not big on changing things from stock, but the low beams on my ‘19 are awful.
Have a great day.
No problem! Same here with most parts. OEM quality is typically the best.
This was an excellent video! Very informative… just finished installing Sealight LEDs for high, low, and fog. I referenced your video and increased my confidence. Thanks!
You are welcome! I appreciate the feedback.
@@bigt0076 I just put sea lights in, they are awesome!!
we got ours changed today thanks to your video
Glad it helped!
Definitely gonna try this method after installing new headlights and leds that I not aligned correctly so i won’t remove the whole front grille lol
Hope it goes well for you! I try to avoid removing the grille any chance I get lol
Thanks very much!! Excellent video!!
You're welcome Antonio! Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks
Very helpful tips and tricks
Glad you found it helpful!
25 years of fixing things and plenty of frustration involved, at 1:40ish is when i decided F Nope! I'll let somebody else do it. thanks for the video anyway.
Ha. There isn’t anything wrong with having someone else do it for you.
@@SmackeysGarage not at all. in fact these days i agree more than ever
Nice mustang!
Thank you!
Good video. Thanks for sharing.
Very helpful, thank you!
You are welcome!
Thanks for showing us the right way. Everybody else takes the grill apart for what? lol I had no problem installing leds just make sure you do the High, Low & Fogs.
Glad I could help. Taking the grill apart is so much of a larger job.
@@SmackeysGarage yea it is not a challenge I was willing to accept. I didn’t know that you needed to replace the high and lows. The H11 are sweet and very bright. I had enough room to tuck the ballast inside the light unit it was so smooth and great. Ford didn’t want to touch it due to the leds not “being ford” when they only offer the entire headlight assembly just to get a led bulb kinda crazy but again thank you for sharing this video it solved all my problems, obstacles as well as brought me enjoyment being so easy.
Man and people say Minis are a pain in the but to work on. At least they put access holes in the wheel fender. You just twist and turn and your at the back of the bulb. In the winter my fenders are caked in snow and ice from the roads...It's a royal pain to change these bulbs on my truck....
I wouldn't want to change these out in winter on the side of the road. My fenders are the same here in the North East with snow and ice everywhere. I'd have to wait until they thaw, which could be weeks.
Dude!! I want one of those shirts that you are wearing!! Very Cool!
Thanks! It was a gift to me. You don’t see many Mach 1 shirts so I was excited to get it!
Wow this is so helpful thank you so much
You are welcome!
Not sure if my 2012 is different, but I didn’t need to mess with the wheel well at all, just followed the book. One push pin and 3 bolts under the hood.
Yea it’s definitely different. My 2011 was so much easier
Way easier than the first video I watched. Had to remove a crap load of screws and some trim
Glad to hear! That’s what I was going for. It’s a lot of work for a headlight bulb
Thank you i did it my self thanks to you
Glad the video helped Sergio!
Great vid bud, thanks

2 screws with my vice grips. 15 minutes to finish. Ty
This is the most helpful/best quality video I've seen for changing these. Not a great design on the truck for this, so great video. Thank you!
You are welcome Frederic! I appreciate the feedback on it.
Thank you for the video. It was easy to follow, good content.
You are welcome!
For the driver’s side, just pull the air intake. Two clips and a screw.
Perdon por escribir en español… pero muy buena información… hoy le puse los focos LED a mi Ford F150 2015 y me sirvio de mucho este video… muchas gracias y adelante con el buen trabajo
Cut a U shape in fender liner to access them in future not hard to find out how to get it to close or seal it to prevent water coming in
Thank you
Glad I could help!
My high beam isn't out but I'm replacing hi/lo both sides anyway rather than having to all this again. There has to be a special place in hell for automotive engineers.
I did the same thing. Better off replacing them all together and suffer once!
“You don’t even have to open the hood… “ 😂
Crazy right.
Thank you.
You are welcome

5.5 mm socket
Hi mate do you know how to coding LED headbulb fault with forscan
I did it for the rear tail lights here. I'm assuming the front is nearby. ruclips.net/video/ez2IS0LaAmA/видео.html
Those factory halogens are pretty bad. I upgraded to Morimoto Hybrids shortly after getting my F-150 and it was WELL worth the $. Huge huge difference and they look way better too!
That's good to hear. I've been debating doing the same. Where did you buy yours from?
@@SmackeysGarage 4x4TruckLEDs but don’t necessarily recommend..had some issues.
Thanks for the tip. I’ll try somewhere else
I just installed the hybrids on my 2019 XLT. Definitely worth the money. Those halogens are terrible.
@@simion33 I'm thinking about those too. I guess I'm hoping they go on sale or something like they did last year.
The top light is the low beam. I have a 2017 F150 and the low beam has always been too dim. It stinks - going to replace with better bulbs, hopefully!
I hear you. The lighting isn’t my favorite thing about this truck
Recorded horizontally:)
Ha. I'm taking it there are many recordings vertically recorded? It's not easy to record in that tight space.
Thank you. This was the easiest way and saved me $105.
You're welcome Sean. Glad I could save you some money!
Need some info on the mustang in the back
I need to do a video covering the specs on my cars. The green car (black jade) is a 1969 Mustang Mach 1 with a 390 and a four speed.
If you notice he doesn’t show removing the bulb from the connector. Needs two hands
Good video. Already purchased the bulbs….now just gotta heal up from my latest back surgery and I’ll put them in. Thanks.
( I have a 69 Indian Fire Mach 1….yours looks good!)
Thanks Dave! Hope everything heals up well! You'll need to be fully healed to contort to get the bulbs... Also cool to hear you have a 69 Mach 1! They are great cars and the most enjoyable to cruise around in!
You can put the
List of the tools needed? Plzzz
Really easy?? Riiight! All you have to do…. Famous words.
Is that a green 1969 428 CJ Mach1 4spd car in the background. Nice! (even if it's a 351W still nice)
It is a 390 Mach 1 in the background. Nice eye!
I'd say this was about a 4/10 degree of difficulty. Thank you.
Incredible for a headlight isn't it!
Much easier to remove the air filter box on the drivers side.
Drivers side is also accessible through the fender?
Yes
Do you have to replace both top and bottom bulbs? Are there separate bulbs for high and low beams?
Yes. There are low beam and high beam bulbs. They are separate.
@@SmackeysGarage Thanks, I bought only two bulbs. I'll need two more. The same bulb for high and low beams?
They are not. I have the bulb types listed in the description.
@@SmackeysGarage Thanks for your timely response. Have a good evening.
You’re welcome! You have a good evening as well!
Sir I have several college degrees but I’m about to pay some shade tree mechanic to do this. Let’s leave the mechanic work to the mechanics 😫
Lol
Good video. For ,sure not easy to get to. I got the low beam to turn and come out. The high beam would not turn.
Ah that’s tough. Might have to take the entire headlight out if it isn’t spinning and you don’t want to damage anything.
so do i need two 9005 and two H11 if im putting led’s
Each side takes one of each bulb. So yes if you are replacing both sides.
@@SmackeysGarage alright thanks
Where is the DRL bulb? Or it just low beams/high beams?
I am trying to buy some led bulbs for my low high and fog lights. Ao curious if i need DRL bulbs separately or they are just low/highbeams?
DRL is the low-beam.
@@SmackeysGaragethanx a lot buddy, appreciate ur quick response time.
@@leoladani6421 no problem!
Is that a Mach 1? Looks nice
Yes it is. Thanks!
@@SmackeysGarage actually came here also to see how to change the headlight bulbs, but got one done already so thanks for the video
So 9005 lower bulb/ low beam and H11 for upper/hi beam?
H11 low beam, 9005 high beam. I believe the low beam is the top bulb. The bulbs I used are linked in the video description.
You got it backwards bro
Imagine needing to remove the fenders to replace headlight bulbs 😂
Yea… lol
Great video thanks but what a pain in the ass just for a light bulb. I love F150’s, I now have my 4th but have never had this much challenge for a bulb. Some comments here were happy to do the job in an hour. Bulb change should only take minutes. I first saw this video and thought, no way, it’s got to be easier than this. Then watched another video and the guy was taking half his grill apart. This video looked better but poor design on Ford for bulb changing if you ask me.
I am in agreement with you. It’s way too complicated for a truck. When I take the truck on longer trips if the bulb goes out I want to replace it with no tools. It could be a lot less complicated than this.
Definitely more than you'd expect for just a bulb replacement but not as difficult to reach the top light as it looks. 2019 stx 2.7
Thanks for the video!
You are welcome!
Thats a good looking truck!
Thanks!
The engineer who thought 2 bulbs was a good idea needs a proper beating. I just spent a small fortune to have this procedure done by a mechanic. I'm buying the right sized socket for the next time
If you don't mind me asking, what was the cost by a mechanic?
Never mentioned there where the retaining ring that had screws no room to get a screw drive in there. You need to open the hood.
Which ring are you talking about?
@@SmackeysGarage @3:15 There seems to be a retaining ring around the socket for the lower bulb with three screws holding it tight. It's nearly impossible to get at those screws to loosen them without removing the headlight assembly out the front. Perhaps you're not supposed to need to loosen those screws (mine are T10 btw). But I also couldn't twist my wrist into there and get any serious torque on the bulb to unlock it either. Not sure what's up.
I think I missed the part where it was supposed to be easy 😂
You haven't seen the hard way lol
If I am going to all that work I would have installed LED’s
Yea that’s probably a better option if you were thinking of changing to them
Thank you for this video, it definitely helped. I now want sell my truck I'm so mad at Ford. Genius engineers took a 3 minute job and turned it into 30. Also now you're going to get petty dirty. #fordsuxks
Glad I could help! Yea it is a much longer job then it could be...
Good video, however, there are not 7/32 bolts in American cars, it is a 5.5 mm. I'm tired to buy sets of tools with standard and metrics and through away half of them every time.
Thanks for pointing that out!
So what if I just want a brighter headlight, which bulb is it? without replacing both. Damn ford has to make everything difficult I never seen worse illumination then these factory lights
Replace the upper bulb (Low Beam H11). I've been a fan of the Silverstar's linked in my description BUT they do not last as long as the stock bulbs.
The only way I've heard to get much better lighting is to replace the entire assembly with an upgraded LED one, but those are expensive. I did end up getting a good gain with the Silverstars.

This is reason 137 on why I'm never buying another Ford
What's reason #1?
Best method is to jack up the F-150 and place safety stands under it, and then remove the wheel. Now, while you have complete access to the wheelwell, pull those same mounting screws as well as the one up top of the wheelwell arch that holds the remaining screw. Once I pulled back the wheelwell lining (which is a bear!), I installed a clip on the metal tab so I could simply reattach the lining from the OUTSIDE of that tab, making it a whole lot easier the next time to change a bulb without having to fight that darned liner!
Great tips. Thanks for sharing!
Just to replace the bulb 😅
It’s not that bad lol
Special tool to change a headlight?
That pin couldn't have been designed better?
Edit...
Just did the driver's side. I used a flat wrench to push the pin down about halfway down. You can get at it from under the air filter. Then I had enough underneath to grab with pliers.
That job took far too long for a freakin headlight.
That’s a good tip. Yea it did take forever for a bulb…
So ford managed to complicate bulb replacement! No surprise ford, lol
Definitely was surprising to me!
I got short arms 💀
Why do engineers have to make everything so difficult
As an engineer. My only thought is they reused a design and made it work.
Excellent video. Ford "Engineers" must be a bunch of crackheads to make it that ridiculous of a procedure to change a headlight bulb. It should be a 5 minute job from the top period without any tools .Imagine it's wintertime -30 and you don't have a garage plastic will probably just snap in the cold when you try to pry it.
Yea it is crazy. I couldn’t imagine changing a headlight bulb on this truck in winter.
I have owned nothing but fords since 1990…. This will be my last one. This is obscene. My old Rangers had no tools required and 2 mins tops to replace any bulb.
This sucked way more than I thought it would. I REALLY hope I didn't get any grease or residue on the bulb in all my blind fumbling up behind the bezel 🤞🙄
Yea it is crazy complex to replace the bulb. Luckily you shouldn’t have to do it often.
Geez what a nightmare. Worst part of owning an f150.
Yea, it isn't convenient as some of my other vehicles, but luckily I haven't had to change them out often.
Ford has a piss poor design for this. This should be much simpler and require only opening the hood.
I was really surprised you couldn't do it from the engine compartment. It is definitely a lot more work for someone to change a bulb with this design.
This is too much. I am going to have to pay my brother to do it. This is something that they (Ford) should have kept simple.
I do agree. It should be simpler...
It's a 6 min video, it should take 6 mins to change - me.
Good luck! 😂
All this to change a fucking light bulb
Ford made so stupid you have to go through all of that to change in one lightbulb
It's definitely not great if you need to do it while away from home.
Shame car companies build cars so cheap and stupid. I would have NOT bought mine had I took time to look at it closer.
