The Final 1969 Mustang Drive | What I've done to the car this year
Going on one last drive in the 1969 Mustang Mach 1 for the year. I'm going to talk through the mods I've done to the car, how I've enjoyed it, and enjoy it for one more ride around town.
Fall is here in New England and it is time to put the cars away. While we haven't had any measurable snow yet, it is coming and I want to be prepared. Come along for one final drive in the car before I put it away for winter.

    Your Mach 1 looks great. I have a 69 S-Code Mach 1 with 4 speed. I am running a 750 CFM Holley. It's a older Holley that works perfect without choke. But I understand the reason behind the choke in your area. I purchased mine from the original owner who was a female. Mine was originally black jade and will be again after I repaint it in 2025. I have it all restored but the paint. I am running a street or track front coil over suspension and 31 spline limited slip rear differential.

      I love the Street or Track suspension. It’s the best handling Mustang I have owned. The limited slip is a Ford unit with Moser axles. I have done several other changes. I have a SCJ oil cooler set up, sub frame connectors and electric steering conversion. 63000 original miles.

    You should do a leak down test before installing a used engine. It is a lot easier to reseal the crankcase or change a crankshaft seal when the engine is out. You need to clean around the engine better, I saw you other videos. I have an 03 800 Rev and I keep it spotless. The 800 requires a lot of maintenance, isoflex grease should be added every 3k miles or so. It is much cheaper to keep these old machines running then buy new imho.

    • @SmackeysGarage
      @SmackeysGarage День назад

      I definitely should have done that. You are right. If I have to remove the engine again I'll do that. When putting it back in and getting it setup I found a fuel leak. Glad I did clean it (even thought I could do it better). Next summer if it is warm I might pull it again. Wasn't that bad of a project. I'm with you. I like these old machines. The sound, smell, and feeling of them is just awesome. Thanks for watching! I think I have the video where I get it running and back together coming this Saturday.

      @@SmackeysGarage I have 11k miles on mine, I went from 17.5 pilot jets to 20 and added a 20 thou shim under the needles, it was a little too lean in mid range from the factory. Keep an eye on the y pipe, the bolts tend to back out and lean the engine out. I put nord lock washers on the cap-screws. I have the boyesen rage cages, stock boots ripped a few years back. I have a newer ripsaw track and newer ski's changed the starter once and kept up with the wear and tear stuff every year. You can download the race manual from the skidoo website explains a lot. I have a maintenance schedule I stick to and sled has been very reliable. I have the non HO 800 with x package.

      @@SmackeysGarage I could buy 10 of them for the price of a new machine... Maintenance is the key. Replace the parts that are getting bad and you will be fine. New track makes a big difference, I am running a ripsaw, replace bearings on a schedule. I put nord lock washers on y pipe bolts and I run Boyesen rage cages. I added a 20 thou shim under the needles and went from 17.5 pilot jets to 20 because low-mid range was lean from factory. I have 11k miles on mine. Did top end once rebuilt crank. replaced track, ski's once and I replace wear/tear items every year. This is like owning a musclecar, budget for repairs and don't take shortcuts.

    • @davidbrennan5
      @davidbrennan5 День назад

      @@SmackeysGarage If I was in your shoes, I would run the used engine for now. I would bring the old crank to a shop with a large press and get them to remove the starter plate, then send out that crank to be rebuilt, you have a good set of jugs and cases. It would be worth rebuilding that other engine in the off season with new seals pistons etc.. Then you have a spare that you know will be reliable for a long time. 800 engine parts are worth $$$. Change the thermostat every 5 years, they will break apart and take out the engine if you wait too long. I would put money into that machine, it still looks to be in great shape. Mothers back to black will make the plastic and seat look like new, spend some time cleaning everything well with degreaser, then rub the polish in.

    • @SmackeysGarage
      @SmackeysGarage День назад

      @@davidbrennan5 Yea definitely. I like your idea of having the crank rebuilt. I'll take it to the race shop this spring and have them push it apart so I can get it rebuilt. It's definitely worth me having a second engine on hand if needed. Cool to see you have so many miles on yours. I had no idea about the thermostat but will pick one up. My plan is to keep putting money into it. I have two sleds in my trailer, this 2007 Rev and an 01 Rev 800. The other sled is my friends but runs well. I maintain it for him but haven't had any serious issues with that one either. Thanks for all this helpful info. I appreciate it!

    I have a 03 Skidoo legend I just purchased the only way they were riding it was on half choke and fell on its face when you hit the throttle. Got it home took the Mikuni float bowls off and pilot jets cleaned them out got it running without the choke half throttle. At low idle it sounded like it was running on 1 cylinder got it up to 5 or 6 rpm sounded sweet let off the throttle back to clutch side running good and the chain case side is getting to much fuel and flooding out util you hit the high r's changed plugs changed the coil getting sweet spark in both cylinders and still at low idle sounds like its running on 1 cylinder compression test 140 both sides sled sat forever in a garage on the old fuel drained the tank ran 90 octane with seafoam. I need help. Pull the plugs and the chain case side is always wet Thank you KLea

    • @SmackeysGarage
      @SmackeysGarage День назад

      Have you checked the carb boots on it? How about the plugs after running both for a bit at WOT? If it is flooding out at low RPMS i'd be looking at the float valve to see if it is getting stuck and just dumping fuel into the engine at idle.

    Since you had the chair awhile do you regret not getting the quick jack instead of the screw one like you have? Also does your seat spin without the casters moving with your set up. Because I know with the quick jack one the whole chair turns casters and all and not the seat and you lose 4 inches of height. Thank you

    • @SmackeysGarage
      @SmackeysGarage 2 дня назад

      At first I regretted not getting the quick jack. I even debated getting it after. The way my chair is set up I can spin without the casters moving, It does have the clamp but I never lock it into place. I personally wouldn't give up 4 inches of height in my shop. One of my workbenches is low enough that being as low as possible is best for the laptop. The chair is a great chair. One thing I wish it came with was some way to lock one of the wheels.

    I admire your courage and effort, but as is often the case with DIY alignment videos, much is left to chance due to omissions in vehicle preparation and procedures. To start, the slope of the garage floor will affect your camber and caster readings. The vehicle will naturally lean toward the lower end of the slope, shifting its weight and altering the angles. A properly calibrated alignment rack, on the other hand, is leveled to within 1/16th of an inch from corner to corner. Another issue is the lack of compensation for runout in your rolling stock. Hubs, wheels, and tires always have manufacturing tolerances because the machines that produce them are also imperfect. If you haven’t accounted for lateral runout, you can’t be sure whether you’re measuring from a high spot or a low spot. For example, with your 1/8th-inch toe-in, rotating the tires 180 degrees could result in a reading of 0 or even a negative toe. Your Mustang left the factory with up to an inch of end play in the front end, stemming from the wheel bearings, tie rods, ball joints, and other components in the steering system. Combined with the fact that the vehicle’s load is supported by springs, this makes alignment a more complex task than some might think. Essentially, you’re trying to measure a “brick made of Jello,” which can shift in any direction depending on the forces acting on it. Modern, commercial-grade computerized alignment systems are designed to account for all these potential points of error, providing accurate and repeatable readings. These systems allow you to consistently return your vehicle to the specifications established by engineers after thousands of hours of testing. These machines cost tens of thousands of dollars for a reason, and a well-qualified technician would have undergone 24 to 40 hours of training with a certified instructor to master their use. In my honest opinion, the time and money you invested in gear for this DIY approach might have been better spent on a professionally performed alignment. A proper alignment would last you at least five years, especially given the limited driving your classic car is likely to see. Additionally, you would receive a detailed printout of the readings, providing valuable insights into a multitude of alignment-related metrics for every corner of your car and the vehicle as a whole.

    • @SmackeysGarage
      @SmackeysGarage 3 дня назад

      I agree with your detailed feedback, and I agree with pretty much all your points. Technology has come so far, that there are a lot of factors that come into play when doing an alignment, which you called out. No one is going to have a perfectly level garage, and it's hard to account for runout. If I was going to be taking this on long trips, I'd get an alignment done by a professional shop. Thanks for the detailed message and I hope others find it useful. Appreciate the sharing of your expertise!

    Technician and Tuner/Calibrator here. Lots of people are talking about disabling learning. But I’ve discussed this with several master techs and people in the industry and I would not leave the learning disabled. Thank you for sharing this video! As said, there is no long term testing of disabling adaptive learning, but turning it off is likely going to hurt the life of your transmission. The adaptive tables within your tune are designed to accompany changes in the transmission over time due to wear. It has NOTHING to do with “learning how you drive”. This is a myth that I even hear dealer technicians saying. It only learns the parameters and response timers within the transmission. Initial smoothness that people are feeling is because everything has been reset. Not because the learning is harming the transmission. The clunkiness in the transmission is 100 percent related to how Ford has it programmed and has nothing to do with adaptive learning. The 3-5 skip shift in particular is what makes these things feel clunky and crappy. Even Ford figured that out, as all 21 and newer f150 trucks no longer skip from 3-5. Having your truck tuned by a professional tuber/calibrator is the only long term solution to this problem. The first thing I and most other tuners do is disable the 3-5 skip shift and make the torque converter lock up come in around 5th instead of 3. These changes alone make a huge difference. Long story short for people still with me, don’t disable adaptive learning if you want to keep your truck. Just get it tuned instead.

    If you were to force fuel, or a cleaner through the fuel line. Would it hypothetically work as a “test” to see if the needles allow flow to the bottom of the bowl

      Yes. If you could act as the fuel pump and push fuel in, it should fill to the bowl level and stop due to the float.

      Carburetor heat. I've never used them. To prevent icing if needed.

    Interesting but you didn't show how you gained access to the filter.

      On my truck there is nothing below to cover the filter.

    I've always found that the factory fog lights on just about any vehicle are junk. Nice upgrade brother.

    What fog lights are you running on your truck? OEM? Aftermarket?

      I have OEM on my F-150, but I don't drive that much anymore. I will be putting some aftermarket ones on the Bronco at some point.

      Really quiet. You don't hear the motor at all from in the car. You mainly hear when they are either fully extended or fully retracted when they meet the stop. I really like them.

      @ no problem. Trucks are a lot more insulated than the Bronco, so that might be why I’m not hearing anything. If you want me to send you a video or recording dm me on my Instagram

      @SmackeysGarage actually, after trying a few other things, it looks like I was wrong. This method does in fact work. There seems to be 2 methods to do this, which is cool. 3 methods if you count just jumping the wire at the switch.
